I hope everyone had a fabulous time ringin’ in the new decade – I personally brought my grandma-ness to a whole new level, but more on that in a bit…

Yesterday, I slept until ALMOST TEN IN THE MORNING!  Ummm…last time I did that I am pretty sure I was hungover from my 21st…or was it 22nd birthday?  Maybe it was after the post-college graduation drinkfest celebration? Whenever it was, it was clearly a LONG time ago.

Since I had a lunch date with my friend Amy at 11:30am, I just had a small bowl of Kashi Honey Sunshine (a.k.a. healthified Cap’n Crunch) with organic skim milk before I headed off to the perfect place to ring eat in 2010…WHOLE FOODS!

Best. Hot. Bar. I. Have. Ever. Had.

That would be more than one pound of…

  • cinnamon-roasted butternut squash
  • carrot-potato veggie latke
  • blue cheese + walnuts + green bean salad
  • Thai noodles + grilled teriyaki tofu
  • butternut squash spaetzle

And the best part? No grossness or feeling nauseaus after.  Just pure, delicious food :).

Ran some errands…cleaned the flat…put together a box of Goodwill Donations…and did my snacky thang, which was about 1/2 – 3/4 cup Chobani Nonfat Greek yog + crumbled Clif Z-Bar in S’mores (yes, it only took me about three months to find the dang flavor).

After some more organizing, I got a jump start on my 2010 goals!

Yep, for the New Year, I kicked things off by whipping up a brand new recipe from the cookbook CLEAN FOOD, which I received as a birthday present.  Nutritious eats + seasonal recipes = a winner in my book (if I had a book…).

This recipe was clearly calling my name…

Toasted cashews, red curry, tempeh, roasted red pepper… twas’ delicious! Especially since it was served over cinnamon-cumin brown rice with cilantro (inspired by another recipe from the book).

While at Whole Foods earlier, I picked up some Coconut Bliss in Mint Galactica and a Double Chocolate Chip cookie, which naturally needed to be turned into one kick arse NYE dessert.

P.S. Head on over to Katie’s blog to win some free Coconut Bliss…just don’t too many of you go and enter.  Because I would really like to win that one.

After dinner, I cleaned up the kitch and headed off to a double feature at the movie theater solo – Nine + The Blind Side.

Let me preface this by saying, I HATE NEW YEAR’S.  It’s usually either drama-filled, drunken-filled or worse – both.  Also, this past year has been a lot about me.  I’ve kind of needed to be selfish in order to grow, deal with some issues, focus on improving myself and just take the time I need to do what is best for me.  In a lot of ways, ending the new year solo was extremely appropriate (and may I say…totally enjoyable!).

Yes, I had multiple offers to hang out with friends, and I totally felt bad turning them down.  However, it felt nice to just sit back, reflect, find some peace and enjoy a double feature while doing so. After some thought, I think I am going to add another thing to my list of 2010 goalswork on opening myself up to people and giving to others more.

Consider it added. Tangent over.

Thank you to the fabulous Russkie Sarah, who sent me the sweetest birthday gift which contained perhaps one of the best cards I’ve ever received, raspberry M&Ms, hazelnut M&Ms (a.k.a. Nutella M&Ms!!!) and an awesome babushka magnet.  Thank you my dearest!

This morning, I awoke to the new year with FABOOSH brekkie…

toasted jalapeno cheddar focaccia
two organic, free-range eggs
1 pepperjack cheese stick
two clementines
3 cups of coffee (w/ organic skim milk)

The jalapeno cheddar focaccia is beyond words. I never used to love the spicy…I guess I have this girl to thank for helping change my tastebuds :).

Alright my kiddos, that’s probably enough from your neighborhood everythingtarian for the day.  I want to hear about your new year…how did you ring in 2010?

Love, happiness + peace to you all!

Evan Thomas January 1, 2010 at 10:28 am

You said goodby to 2009 with some of the best eats ever. That tempeh dish has me drooling.
Nutella M&M’s? Holy Hannah those sound good
My 2010 was run in pretty simply. guests left at 10pm and I was fine with that

Danielle (Coffee Run) January 1, 2010 at 10:32 am

My New Years wasn’t any more exciting: Me + parents. Not to sound too cynical, but I think New Years celebrations a little over-rated ;)
The Thai tempeh dish looks SO good. Happy New Years!

Nicole January 1, 2010 at 10:43 am

Mmmm! Buffet looks wonderful!

We had champagne, watched the ball drop, and played Yahtzee with friends. And I made lots of appetizers! yum!

Happy New Year!

Andrea@WellnessNotes January 1, 2010 at 10:44 am

We had a really relaxing evening, which I loved. And yes, I slept well before midnight. But that was totally okay with me…

Oh, and I wanted to tell you that I bought the first Coconut Bliss the other day, and I couldn’t believe how good it is. I think I’m addicted, and I blame you for you it! ;) Honestly, it’s the only food item in the house I’m protective of. Yes, I have asked people to please not touch it! ;)

Happy 2010! Have a fabulous year!

Morgan @ Life After Bagels January 1, 2010 at 10:51 am

That looks like the best 24 hours of food in the world! Happy New Year :)

Lizzy January 1, 2010 at 10:52 am

Happy New Year my dear!!!! :) hugs and loads of kisses! xoxo

Jenny January 1, 2010 at 10:56 am

Happy happy new year! I like your style for sure.

And I can say that I took “grandma-ishness” literally to a new level…i rung in 2010 at a knitting+wine party! Yes, I learned how to knit :)

Anywho, I think your solo new year’s was totally deserved and the fact that you were able to make the choice to do what YOU wanted says that you are on track for a great start to 2010!

K January 1, 2010 at 10:57 am

Hazelnut M&Ms?!?!? What?! I need some of those in my life! I also need some of that foccacia! Welcome to the spicy side of life :)

katie January 1, 2010 at 11:12 am

GREAT goals girl!!
that hot food bar meal seriously looks freaking aweeesome!

ellie January 1, 2010 at 11:24 am

Happy new year to yoooooooooooooou, Holly! :D I spent the evening flying solo too and wouldn’t have had it any other way. Time to reflect and plan.

Love that you said “arse” and cleanining your “flat”. Clear sign to me that you are a Brit deep-down… :D

Jess January 1, 2010 at 11:28 am

Awesome eats to bring in the new year, girl! I totally understand spending NYE alone. I did nothing special! Just hung with the fam!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is January 1, 2010 at 11:33 am

I have never really liked New Years either – I usually end up staying in! Happy New Year Holly!! :)

Madeline @ GreensAndJeans January 1, 2010 at 11:35 am

Even though my boyfriend and I went “out” last night for a bit, we were still back home by 10pm and took a power nap on the couch before waking up to quick kiss at midnight and then fall back asleep. True party animals. Happy New Year lady!

Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete January 1, 2010 at 11:43 am

Hey girl! I’m glad that you got some time to yourself!

We just ended up staying home. My friends party was canceled. It ended up being fine. Steve was out by 10:30, and I woke him up at midnight with a smooch! That was it!

Jenna January 1, 2010 at 11:56 am

Glad you had a nice relaxful NYE just the way you wanted!
That hot bar looks soo devine!
I have never heard of those m&ms before! Sound tasty!!

crunchy granola gal January 1, 2010 at 12:01 pm

holly, i totally hear you on the selfish bit. i definitely struggle to find a way to be selfish enough to take care of myself without sacrificing others. it’s tough! but in the end, YOU come first — i firmly believe that. rock on and happy new year chica!

Gina January 1, 2010 at 12:14 pm

That breakfast looks absolutely delicious! Your new year’s sounds perfect and appropriate – good for you for taking care of yourself, a perfect way to ring in 2010! Girl, your college drinkfest sounds all too much like my night last night, my new year’s was glam rock themed and cuh-rayzee haha

Maya January 1, 2010 at 12:18 pm

I agree with you, for me this year was very self reflective and in a way, selfish. I had to learn to take care of myself yet be generous and giving to others. I wanted to celebrate quietly and by myself, but I was invited to a friend’s house who I don’t see that often. I ended up leaving fairly early, after midnight, and had a good night’s sleep.

I loved your addition to your 2010 goals and am working on that, as well.

Jessica January 1, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Holly Holly Holly!! I just texted you–holla!!!!!!

Um, so I have so much to say about this post!
1. you’re a rock stahh for doing what YOU wanted on NYE and seeing a double feature! i know your amigas probably missed you, but there are sooooooo many more fun nights/nye celebrations/etc to be had, so i’m sure you will totally make up for any lost time :)
2. I don’t think i’ve ever seen such a delicious-looking Whole Food’s hot bar salad! The noodles. That tofu!
3. LOVE THAT BREAKFAST! Need to re-create it as soon as possible!!
4. And that recipe sounds delish!! Come cook for me?? K thanks :)

Oh and thanks for the shout out, by the way :) Glad the spicy senses are a-kickin’ !! XOXO

Haleigh January 1, 2010 at 12:21 pm

The focaccia sounds beyond amazing! Happy 2010!

Katie January 1, 2010 at 12:27 pm

Ugh, I should have taken a cue from my healthy everythingtarian. I WISH so badly I would have stayed home last night – but the husband wanted to go out, so I grumpliy drove drunk people around Denver. Bleh. Oh well, marriage is a compromise, right?

Glad you got to take in the new year on a calmer note, have a fantastic day! xoxo

Lauren January 1, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I slept in this morning too! Only my sleeping in only lasted until 8am! I know, but trust me, when you get up at 4am everyday, 8am is like waking up at noon. ;)

I think your approach to New Years Eve is just perfect. Yah, the though of going out and partying all night does not sound appealing one bit anymore. Really, the only thing I wanted to do was order sushi, drink wine and be in my Pj’s- so that is exactly what I did! What a way to ring in the New Year. ;)

Happy New Years my dear friend. May this year be unbelievable for you! :)

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) January 1, 2010 at 1:00 pm

The hotbar looks amazing! As does the dessert. And the “raspberry M&Ms, hazelnut M&Ms (a.k.a. Nutella M&Ms!!!)”–i had no idea they make “flavors”. Clearly I have been living under a rock! LOL
And your email, going to reply, but thank you!!!!!!!!

April January 1, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Happy New Years!!

Is Clean Food the same as Clean Eating? Either way your food looks fabulous!

And jalapeno cheddar sounds just wonderful! I could live off of spicy foods!

Sarah (Finding My Balance) January 1, 2010 at 2:22 pm

yay! i’m so glad your m&m’s got there safe and sound. (i just saw peanut butter m&m’s the other day… perhaps mixing those with raspberry would yield pb+j m&m’s??? experimentation could be in my future :) )

a low key new year’s sounds good to me! i spent the night playing bananagrams and rock band with my cousins and grandma. yeah: rock band with my grandma….

Tina January 1, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Lovin’ the babushka magnet!

You know, actually, I spent the New Year’s celebrations on my own too :P

The irony is that this year, my parents had actually given me permission to go out and party till dawn, but I chose to stay at home.

I don’t mind either, I didn’t really feel the need to get drunk and do things I’d regret :P

Happy New year!!!

Shelley January 1, 2010 at 4:46 pm

all of your eats look great- the latke at whole foods sounds really good & so does all the squash!~ i love the way you spent your new years- was nine good?? i want to see it!

happy new year

Lynn @ The Actors Diet January 1, 2010 at 5:12 pm

happy happy new year!

Anne January 1, 2010 at 5:19 pm

Love the hot bar and dessert! I had a pretty chill NYE with the fam, but it was nice. Happy New Year, Holly!

Panclayke January 1, 2010 at 5:51 pm

I rang in the new year with a couple close friends in Austin TX, where i went to college. It was low key, love-filled and there was one of the best donuts i have ever had… also the biggest, check out what i just wrote about it.

I abhor the drunkified new years. its like people think they are going to be straght-edged in the new year so they work to get all the debotchery out in one night… not always the case. Happy New Year My Dear!

Kate January 1, 2010 at 8:32 pm

the thai tempeh sounds delish!

i am totally impressed that you went to a movie by yourself. i have always wanted to do that but wussy out in the parking lot. i am challenging myself to do that in 2010!

daintyvegan January 1, 2010 at 9:04 pm

Sometimes (possibly a lot of the time) being selfish is a must. Besides, I would’ve had a blast hanging out and doing my own thing on New Years. That’s not what I did – went to a party and actually had a fantastic time – but I was seriously tempted to.

PS. I slept in until 10 today too! Argh.. haven’t done that in forever but I felt better when I realized that I was still the first one up.

BroccoliHut January 2, 2010 at 12:30 am

Whoa, I think my heart just skipped a beat when I saw that hot bar concoction. AMAZING.
Happy New Year to you, and I hope to get to know you even better in 2010!

Cindy January 2, 2010 at 12:35 am

Happy New year
we made a nice veg pasta dinner and I blogged, boys played xbox and we had a glass of wine. A treat around these parts.

very quiet night!

Susan January 2, 2010 at 6:51 am

Sleeping in to almost 10am sounds glorious!! The last time I did that was definitely after some 21-year-old university party or something. This year I went to a party with Chris’ friends. Since he doesn’t read my comments here I’ll tell you I only went so he could have a chance to hang out with friends he never sees. Next year I definitely want to do something more low key :) Happy New Year Holly, love ya!!

The Fit Collegiate January 2, 2010 at 8:33 am

I love when I surprise myself by sleeping in…I’m the world’s oldest soul. My biological clock wakes me up at 8:00 am on the weekends!

All of your food looks drool-worthy. Raspberry M&M’s? HAZELNUT M&M’s? Where have I been??!

Emily (The Experimentarian) January 2, 2010 at 8:35 am

Hellloooooooo Holly! Dang, why am I such a bad blog reader lately? Miss you and your sweet face, too :) Yep, me and D played Blokus and went to bed at 11:00. I figure, why wait up? The new year will be there when I wake up in the morning! lol. xoxo

Rebecca January 2, 2010 at 9:45 am

Happy New Year!! I think I need to go to Whole Foods right now. I also need to find hazelnut m&ms!

Susan January 2, 2010 at 11:09 am

Yowza, those are some fab eatz sista!
I’m ‘specially feeling New Years Day breakfast – foccacia? fried eggs? yes please!

Kailey January 2, 2010 at 2:16 pm

HAPPY 2010 :)

Bekah January 2, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Paah I WISH I was alone on new years! Don’t get me wrong.. I’m no hermit, but I do love my alone time. And I would have been totally fine with my laptop, good book and a pot of coffee.

:) Glad you had a nice evening to yourself dearest Holly and I wish you the best in 2010. So glad you’re a bloggie friend!

janetha January 3, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Katie January 5, 2010 at 6:23 am

I greeted 2010 playing… Deer Hunter!

Low January 6, 2010 at 9:08 am

Um, can you cook that for me when I come visit you in cheeseland? Thank you.

I need to work on opening up more this year also. I have built up such a wall over the years. I wish you much luck!

And staying in on New Year’s sounds amazing. I hate waking up hung over on the first day of the year (which happened this year, not going to lie). And I want to see Nine soooo bad!!!
