7.18.11: breakfast

in breakfast,recipes

I like oatmeal just as much as the next person.

Banana Custard Oats?

Pumpkin Gingerbread Oats?

{vegan} Ice Cream Oatmeal?

I’ll happily eat them all for breakfast…just not today.

You see, Wisconsin has decided to shun it’s tundra-like reputation and take a turn for the tropical. It’s only day two of the humidity-filled heat wave, and already, I can’t think of anything worse than a Monday morning breakfast of hot oatmeal, hot coffee + a sweltering 95 degree apartment. I mean, do I really want to wake up in a pile of sweat, take a cold shower, start profusely sweating again, bike to work sporting serious pit stains, profusely sweat some more and spend the first 15 minutes of my work day fanning myself down?

I think not.

Instead, I’ll take a massive bowl of Overnight Oats, a venti iced coffee from Starbucks + a to-go stick of deodorant, thankyouverymuch.

Because Overnight Oats are cold, creamy and utterly perfect for the intolerable summer heat.

My favorite basic recipe goes a lil’ something like this…

1/2 cup oats +
1 (6 oz.) container vanilla Greek yogurt +
1/2 cup milk +
1 T chia seeds (or flaxseeds)

…mix + soak overnight then in the morning, top with…

lots of cinnamon
1/2 cup strawberries, bananas or fruit of choice
1 T drizzly peanut butter

Makes one Everythingtarian-sized bowl

Iced coffee + deodorant not included.

What is YOUR favorite hot weather breakfast? Sharing is caring!

smoothays :D.

As soon as I wake up: Stuff my face with watermelon (just finished it today too…*sniff*)

Roughly 1-2 hours later (after I’ve hopefully beasted a Dave Farmar podcast): my paltry attempt at an egg omelette (2-3 eggs w/ mozzarella cheese) doused in salsa.

Or a bagel. Bagels are good.

But I agree, regular oatmeal is way too heavy for summer!

Also, uh, I’ve kind of just embraced the sweatiness and then heading to work today I realized forgot to put any deodorant on—oops!

Mmmm! I’m going to have to try your recipe. That sounds awesome! Thank you!

I usually have toast or fruit and yogurt. I still have hot coffee though. I just wait until I get into my nicely air conditioned office before I drink it though. :)

It’s very hot and humid here. Loving that summer is here, but wish it wasn’t so humid.

Ellen @ Cinnamonalicious July 19, 2011 at 2:11 am

Mmmm I LOVE overnight oats! :)
My favourite hot weather breakfast is that, fruit & yogurt or a smoothie…now I just need some hot weather!

Kristen - Anywhere There's An Airport July 19, 2011 at 2:13 am

I’ve been eating the same massive bowl of grapefruit, pear and kiwi since I hopped the pond to Spain. (Don’t forget to add vanilla protein powder and half a jar of cinnamon!) Maybe it’s a comfort thing – but I can’t imagine changing it anytime soon. :) Especially with the summer heat, there is nothing more refreshing in the A.M.

Smoothies + cereal… because putting together the overnight oats the night before is too much work in this heat! Seriously, I don’t know how I am going to handle tomorrow’s promise of 97 degrees.

Lauren July 19, 2011 at 5:56 am

I haven’t made hot oats all summer. Lately I’ve been so into fruit and yogurt bowls with raw oats. Basically the same thing just doesn’t sit overnight. I’m more a fan of hearty texture.

Love Love Love you!!!

What is YOUR favorite hot weather breakfast? = iced coffee for sure :)

Karlee July 19, 2011 at 6:02 am

cold cereal always does it for me

Madeline - Greens and Jeans July 19, 2011 at 6:08 am

All smoothies all the time. If I were you, I’d be setting up a cot in your office and sleeping there.

i’m mucho spoiled and have ac…because i’m a big baby and hate being hot. so i’ve been having hot oats every morning despite the heat!

Marci July 19, 2011 at 8:37 am

Down in Houston, I know what you’re feeling! Hot oats went out the door many months ago, and I love overnight oats. Best part is I make it the night before in tupperware and it’s ready to go in the a.m. for work. I also like yogurt or hard boiled eggs for summer to-go breakfasts.

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) July 19, 2011 at 9:02 am

my ideal summer breakfast includes lots of iced coffee with a generous splash of whole milk, fresh fruit (berries or cherries or peaches), and pb&j! although i wouldn’t say no to that bowl of overnight oats ;)

Best hot weather breakfast? Container of honey or vanilla greek yogurt, 2 tablespoons of almond butter, a few raisins, and half a chopped up banana. Mix and mush, and you have perfection.

Cait @ Cait hates Cake July 19, 2011 at 9:29 am

I’ve been having parfaits lately w/ fresh, summer fruit.

Katie July 19, 2011 at 10:49 am

I want to die when I think about a hot bowl of oats in the summer. Blech. My favorite hot day breakfast is a smoothie. Ahhhh.

Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table July 19, 2011 at 11:14 am

I think the chocolate pudding I ate this morning are movin’ on up on list, but I am a AM smoothie whore. Spinach first thing + protein powder + fruit + fun toppings. The toppings are the best part of any breakfast/dessert/snack. :)

Cait's Plate July 19, 2011 at 12:50 pm

I want that breakfast!! Yogurt and fruit are my go-tos on hot days. I’ve only done overnight oats once, I think I need to try it again. I had a little trouble with the texture of it…maybe I just need to add more things next time :)

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather July 19, 2011 at 1:42 pm

I have been all about overnight oats lately too! Mainly because then I don’t have to make food in the morning and I can sleep more :)

Megan (Braise the Roof) July 19, 2011 at 1:56 pm

I’m with you, I don’t know how anyone would eat hot oatmeal in the heat. I always start craving Greek yogurt and fruit for breakfast when it gets hot out. But then I remember that I eat peanut butter on Ezekial toast 99% of all my mornings and get over myself while I drag my sweaty self to the toaster. :)

Hillary July 19, 2011 at 2:27 pm

I feel the same way. The only things I can stomach for breakfast in the summer are smoothies, or bowls of yogurt or cottage cheese loaded with berries. The thought of hot oats (or eggs, or anything else for that matter) when it’s over a hundred degrees makes me nauseous!

Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin July 19, 2011 at 2:38 pm

the to-go stick of deodorant is definitely my favorite part of your breakfast! hahaah.

Parita @ myinnershakti July 19, 2011 at 3:53 pm

My FAV hot weather breakfast would def. have to be smoothies. My favorite is the good old frozen banana + PB + cocoa + protein powder + spinach…so satisfying!

BroccoliHut July 19, 2011 at 8:46 pm

LOVE this! These days I’ve been digging smoothies made with coconut water and frozen berries.

Courtney July 20, 2011 at 10:34 am

Just made your overnight oats with berries I picked! yum-e! Thankss you!

Kaitlin With Honey July 26, 2011 at 6:05 pm
