Distractions
10 Ways to Distract Yourself From Thinking Too Much About an Impending Marathon
(1) Don’t allow yourself enough time to get ready in the morning.
That way, between running 3 miles, showering, attempting to fix your bird’s nest hair, straining to put on eyeliner, stretching, making a lunch, packing that very same lunch and eating breakfast on the fly, you won’t have time to think about how many hours it’s going to take you to run 26.2 miles.

(2) Experiment by creating a new, delicious yog mess.
FYI: Holly’s my name and yog messes are my game.
3/4 cup Stonyfield Nonfat French Vanilla yog
1/4 cup pumpkin
craploads of cinnamon
1 tsp. PB
1 crumbed Pumpkin Molasses Cookie

(3) Facebook, GChat, People, reading blogs, MSN Astrology, Texts From Last Night…you know the drill.
(4) Use a old, busted microwave to heat your lunch.
Instead of taking marathon off your brain for only 1 to 2 minutes, you can increase that by more like 7 to 8 minutes.

(5) Dance obnoxiously in the middle of your office to Miley’s Cyrus’ “Party in the USA.”
(6) Polish off the last Pumpkin Molasses Cookie.
Shout out to Heather – one of my new, fave bloggies – who made these cookies…only better! She rolled them in CINNAMON SUCANAT. Yeah, she don’t mess around.

(7) Start thinking about what to concoct for dinner out of the scant leftovers in your apartment.
Zucchini with almonds, raspberry preserves & chia granola stir fry? Balsamic, celery, banana, raisin and peanut butter salad? Pepperjack cheese melted over dark chocolate chips and Cream of Wheat?
(8) Cook an actual, real dinner.

1/2 zucchini, crumbled Breakfast Sunshine Patty + 2 eggs scrambled in 1/2 tbsp. EVOO + garlic,
then topped with pepperjack cheese + black bean salsa
(9) Blog. Obviously.
(10) Grab a beer Carbo-load with friends.
Not only are you doing something vital for marathon training but chatting with friends should help take your mind off of any angst you might feel as you take your first step over the starting line and realize you have 26.2 miles ahead of you.
Happy distracting!

Carbo load with friends sounds perfect.
I also dig the pumpkin yogurt; you should try getting your hands on some peanut flour to add in. It really ups the flavor and makes it thick like molasses(which I know you’re also fond of)
September 30th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
Ha! I can’t help but dance when I hear that song!
Carbo loading with your friends sounds like a perfect distraction!

I’m loving that sandwich…although sadly, cinn raisin pb is not allowed in my house anymore. I went thru *two* jars in a week and a half!!
The yogurt mess is fab also, nothing wrong with using a few cookies every now and then in your meals.
September 30th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
i love it
Happy Distracting!
I love the dinner idea of “pepperjack cheese over dark chocolate chips and cream of wheat”
September 30th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
You are going to rock the marathon! One of my best friends is running a marathon this weekend too. Y’all give me inspiration to think about one myself
September 30th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
At first I thought the bananas in your sandwiches were marshmallows! They look like pillars
Ohhh my gosh I would love to try one of the pumpkin molasses cookies. It sounds awesome crumbled on your yog mess. I also thought all those things you listed… were all combined into one CRAZY dinner. I was going to ask – how’d it taste? lol then I saw you whipped up something else.
Facebook is SUCH a distraction, and blogging definitely is too lol.

These are excellent tips. Especially numbers 1, 3 and 4 which I excelled at today…
I also ate curry tonight which makes us twinnies. Score.
It’s gonna be awesome! Can’t wait to carbo load and hit up the expo with you on sat. Rock on.

before i know it, i’ve wasted hours of my life.
yog messes are your game, you make ‘em look goooood girl.
September 30th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
You are going to ROCK that marathon! Let it be known that there is not one celebrity I hate more than Miley Cyrus, but goodness that song is super catchy and may be on an iTunes playlist (or three). Your cookies are SO GOOD! I just turned them into Pumpkin Molasses SNICKERDOODLES! Because those are my second favorite cookie.
September 30th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
I’m thinking that I’m going to train for a marathon just so I can eat the pre-race deliciousness you post every day. Or, I could not train for a marathon and still try to recreate the deliciousness you post every day.
Decisions, decisions…

September 30th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
I do love me some Miley Cyrus, and no I’m not 17. Just feel like it sometimes.
Girl, I cannot imagine if I were in your shoes (which I will be in a few months, but lets not think about that). You are going to do AWESOME in your marathon. JUST AWESOME!
I have faith in you, if not myself.
September 30th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Was today not the perfect fall day? Don’t be too nervous about your race…I think you’ll do great! You’ve been training so hard and with the motivation of everyone else it will be much easier than your long runs by yourself
September 30th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
That bread looks amazing! I gotta see if I can find some ezekiel bread around here…
And you truly are the master of the yog mess

September 30th, 2009 at 11:47 pm
I don’t even like Miley Cyrus and even I dance to that song!
Haha, you seem to have found some lovely distractions.

You evil, evil woman. I had no previous clue as to what Texts from Last Night was until now. And now I can’t stop reading them!
On the other hand, I have to thank you. Your earlier post this week about how much you love fall is the one thing I credit for making me fall in love with it, too! I’ve been such a happy camper because I think of you, walking to work in your tights and boots with coffee in hand, and how you were smiling from ear to ear, and how can I NOT be in the same spirit. Is it creepy I remember all that? It’s just LOVE.
October 1st, 2009 at 6:32 am
Great fall eats, lady! I can only imagine the nervous excitement you’re going through. You’re going to do awesome! I can’t wait for the marathon recap.

I’m going to be MIA when you do your marathon – so GOOD LUCK lady!!! Can’t wait to come home and read all about it!! xo
October 1st, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Love your distractions (and I share quite a few)! And I also love your yog mess today!
October 1st, 2009 at 12:32 pm
OMG I do that all the time – never leave myself enough time in the morning to get ready. It’s totally takes your mind off everything when you are rushing around like a mad woman trying to squeeze in a run, breakfast, a shower, getting kids ready, blogging, photographing meals, coming up with corny jokes to be used later – before you know it’s time to go and you’ve totally forgotten all about anything that was on your mind. Marathon? What marathon?
October 1st, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Haha I especially like #1!
October 1st, 2009 at 3:40 pm
That Miley song gets in your head and NEVER LEAVES! So I’ve decided to share it with people in my office- it makes the pain a bit more bearable
Seeing grown men nodding their head like ‘yeah’ is straight up comedy
Those pumpkin molasses cookies are seriously the business and are floating in my head as much as the Party in the USA. There’s only one way to change that- make and EAT!
Your yogmess makes me miss my yogurt days…looks goooood
October 1st, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Distraction is an awesome tool. I use it a lot. Also a huge fan of blatant denial
If it helps, I’ve been thinking about your marathon a lot so leave any worry to me. I even told my dad about you and he told me why it is 26.2 miles I never knew! You’ll be AWESOME!
October 1st, 2009 at 6:05 pm
You are hilarious. Good strategies, too – and for the record, I think those cookies are really going to help you to rock the socks off that race! If they don’t…well, you can just send the leftovers to me.
October 1st, 2009 at 7:14 pm
