A Lil’ Thing Called Balance

7:35am: Wake up an hour later than expected due to the fact that after completing a 60-minute Yoga to the People podcast late last night, I fell asleep in savasana and woke up on my yoga mat 6 1/2 hours later.

7:38am: Shower, brush out the million tangles in my hair, skip the make-up and devour a classic bowl of oatmeal

1/3 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup water + 1/3 cup organic skim milk
pinch of salt
1 mashed banana
cinnamon
drizzle of agave syrup
almond buttah

CIMG6277

8:13am: Lick the bowl clean while blog reading about my fave Iowan’s trip to my hometown.

8:35am: Stop for the requisite morning coffee with skim milk and pray I don’t see the creeper who has proceeded to air kiss me several times on my 1-mile walk to work in the morning. Mission completed.

8:47am: Climb the two flights of stairs up to the office and wonder for the millionth time how one can run a marathon, yet still get uber-winded going up steps.

11:45am: Office lunch outing for Chris’s birthday!  We went to the uber-swanky Capitol Chophouse where I obviously got nervous about being on my best behavior a.k.a. knowing proper dining etiquette.  I did NOT grow up in a fancy house people. Things like knowing which fork to use make me nervous.

12:07pm: Throw whatever ounce of class I had left in the garbage by devouring a mixed greens salad, Grilled Mahi Mahi Tacos with Avocado-Cilantro Sauce and some of the chocolate lava cake birthday dessert.

Slide112:13pm: The waiter brings over warm chocolate chip cookies.  Apparently, EVERYONE gets one of these post-meal.  Ummm…why haven’t I been here before?

12:17pm: My boss offers me some of her French fries + 1/2 her cookie.  To solidify my job security (and for this reason only), I happily agree.  Then I follow up lunch with an apple…how I was still hungry, I do not know.

4:03pm: Hear all about Adam Lambert’s scandalous performance at the AMA awards last night from my co-worker and Mama Pea and must watch the video.  Call me corrupt; call me a tart; but other than some inappropriate pelvic thrusting, I didn’t find it all that scandalous.

5:30pm: Skedaddle my buns to the gym for an awesome 50-minute elliptical session with my new Women’s Health magazine and a side of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the television.  I love that man.

6:45pm: Return home and eat some dindin…British pub style!

CIMG6284

CIMG6288

7:00pm: Guzzle the rest of my Great Lakes Christmas Ale while I wait for these to roast…

CIMG6290

7:20pm: Down about 2 cups of roasted brussel sprouts while blog reading. Perfection.

7:28pm: Remember Katharina’s sweet package of treats she sent me before realizing I ate them all last night.  Crap.

CIMG6273

8:13pm: Start writing this blog post, and as much as I want something sweet, remember that I ate 1 1/2 chocolate chip cookies + 1/4 chocolate lava cake with lunch.  Balance Holly…balance.

8:21pm: Projected time I will hit publish on this post, then proceed to…

  • take a bath (my fave!)
  • read more blogs
  • do the dishes
  • call my bestie Ashley
  • clean my bedroom
  • watch last week’s “The Office”
  • organize my finances
  • respond to reader e-mails

11:00pm: E.B.T. (estimated bedtime)…who wants to take a bet on how many of the above tasks actually get completed? I am going to guess 4/8.  Hitting .500 would win me a MLB batting title, right?

Ohh my gosh – laughed out loud for approx 2 minutes at your yoga pose induced snooze!!! Seriously…ohhh, you’re great. ;)

  6. katherine Says:

I’ve never understand that – how a marathoner can get winded by going up steps. What is UP with that?!?!

  7. April Says:

I can do the stairmaster for a long period of time but when I walk up the stairs at school.. ouch!!

i missed adam lamberts performance and all the videos have been deleted online! or at least the ones I’ve tried to look at have. Grr I want to see what everyones talking about!

8:47am: Climb the two flights of stairs up to the office and wonder for the millionth time how one can run a marathon, yet still get uber-winded going up steps.

i had this same thought today. i was walking up 2 flights of stairs in the library and i reached the top and was winded. how we run half marathons and marthons is beyond me!

    love you chica!!!!!!!

  10. Evan Thomas Says:

I thought the adam lambert thing was scandalous but then again I find everything scandalous.
I picked up that amy’s meal over the weekend and have high hopes for it. Here’s hoping it won’t let me down!

  11. Jess Says:

Holly, you make me smile :)

Love that you fell asleep in savasana! That’s awesome. That’s called relaxation at its finest.

  12. Kailey (SnackFace) Says:

OMG I think it was universal let’s-sleep-through-our-alarms day!!! I did it too!!!! And I never do that!

So, this post is perfect. I think 1+1/2 cookies and a bit of lava cake is the perfect balance for your walk to and fro work and 50 mins on the elliptical. Really, I think it is!

I’m gonna go ahead and say you’ll do half those things. And that’s BOSSY.

    LOVE YOU!!!

  13. Katharina Says:

If you’re ever in New York you should go to a Yoga to the People studio – it’s amazing. I had one of my favorite yoga classes EVER there. There’s so much energy from everyone and I remember it was rainy, hot, and muggy the day I went and we were in a tight spice with brick walls and hardwood floors and the windows were open because there was no A/C. It definitely smelled like BO but that was quickly forgotten. People just let go and were so into it.

That place sounds awesome! A free warm chocolate chip cookie?? Yum :D Was the Shepherd’s Pie good? I usually like Amy’s stuff but once I had this Indian wrap thing that I didn’t really care for.

Girrrl you are like me with those cookies lol. Every night I have been having a plate of cookies with pumpkin spice soymilk before bed.

  14. Mama Pea Says:

You must have seen the edited W. Coast feed, or else I’m really old and just not cool with simulated oral sex. I don’t care if you are a guy or a girl or a goat. Not cool. :)

  15. Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) Says:

Oh balance. How I miss it. My mother used almost an entire stick of butter in tonight’s dinner. Haha, but it was delicious. And then I ate homemade pumpkin ice cream. Totally counts as a vegetable, right?

  16. Anne K. Says:

That lunch looks fab, and I love roasted brussies! And that is crazy you fell asleep for so long on that yoga mat! Haha, you rock, Holly!

  17. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) Says:

“Down about 2 cups of roasted brussel sprouts while blog reading. Perfection.”
That would be perfection for me too. Random question and you can jjust totally ignore this…but. When I eat too many B.S. I can literally smell the toxins coming off about 2 hrs later. Use your imagination, kinda like asparagus does. Sorry. I will stop now :)

  18. Angharad (Eating for England) Says:

I think I hindered you getting some of your to-do list done by gabbing in your ear…sorry.
I still can’t believe you fell asleep on your yoga mat. You are special.
How about a real pub dinner in England? Yes? Shall we book? Le SIGH.
    DO YOUR EFFING DISHES! NOW!
Love you, excited for your return to the mini apple – it’s more fun when you’re here in the flesh.
    Hearts x

  19. sophia Says:

I lub you Holly! You just never fail to put a smile on my face!

Haha, I also like how almost everything you put up there is kind of food-related.

  20. katie Says:

hahah love this post!!! why do ur oats always look so good?! they look so creamy and WONDERFUL.

how was the shepards pie? hilarious bout the yoga mat!!

  21. Katie Says:

OMGosh I just DIED laughing for an hour when I read that you fell asleep and STAYED asleep on your yoga mat all night. That’s a sign that YOU need a vacation, girl!

  22. Katie Says:

Where would I be without your pop culture alerts? I swear I used to know about these things as they were happening, but now I kind of live under a rock.

  23. Tay Says:

haha I can’t believe you fell asleep on your yoga mat and woke up 6 1/2 hours later? You must’ve been one tired lady!!

  24. BroccoliHut Says:

LOL I am the same way–I think about how much I run, but I still get totally exhausted hauling my laundry up and down the stairs.
What did you think of that Shepherd’s Pie? I had it a while back when I first went veg and recall LOVING it.

  25. Gina Says:

Oh my gosh, I feel you on the falling asleep! Tonight I fell asleep during, “Food, Inc.” before going out to another movie – I know you share a love for Michael Pollan, so you know how hard it would be to fall asleep!

Any restaurant that gives everyone a cookie gets 5 stars from me. :-)

  26. Maya Says:

I have definitely fallen asleep during savasana in class before. Mmmm such a glorious sleep. I probably wouldn’t wake up were it not for the bell that my instructor rings. I’ll have to try a yoga for the people podcast!

  27. Erica Says:

hahahah love that you feel asleep in savasana! That is awesome. Great day but so busy! How good do those roasted brussels look? Drooool

  28. Alison Says:

6:04AM Realize it’s been 3 days since I’ve been here and I’m feeling way behind on the life of Holly! Why is it so comforting to know I’m not the only one that struggles with balance and trying to find time for it all?

6:05AM thinking a job where eating a cookie to ensure job security sounds sort of appealing.

6:06AM Feeling a little more caught up. Shew.

  29. insideiamdancing Says:

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Your posts always make me so ridiculously happy :D I get scared in fancy restaurants too- maybe that’s why they give cookies. Like when you go to the dentist when you are little and get stickers for being brave.

Hope your evening was productive- I got season 1 of The Office at the weekend so can watch now! Yay!

  30. Kendra Says:

your getting better at knowing your sports! thata girl! now you can keep up with the family! hahah…

  31. Lauren Says:

Well if you accomplished just a few of these things, I’d say it was a pretty successful day. :)

OMG I haven’t heard about the AMA thing yet? Now I am dying to see what happened.

Hope you are having a great week Holly! :)

  32. Abby (Nibble, Nourish, Run) Says:

Haha I LOVE your comment about the stairs…makes no sense!

  33. Emily (The Experimentarian) Says:

That kabocha from Sunday looks amazing! Love the timeline :) Hope you got everything done…or at least 4/8 superstar! xoxo

  34. Madeline @ GreensAndJeans Says:

Mass quantities of brussels are definitely the perfect way to end the day. I also agree with you about Adam Lambert’s performance. Maybe I have a high tolerance for pelvic thrusts?

  35. Susan Says:

Oooh, thanks for sharing that Yoga to the People link! I’m still struggling to find online videos that I enjoy. Oddly, Yoga X has been my favourite video thus far and I don’t own it anymore!

And you can’t say no to free warm cookies. It’s a law of nature.

  36. Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) Says:

Isn’t it funny how stairs always get a person winded? I just don’t understand it.

Looks like a fun dinner out! Free dessert is always a good thing. :D

  37. Courtney F Says:

That is hilarious about snoozing while in savasanaYou are one exhausted woman or extremely relaxed!
    That chocolate cake looks amazing!
How creepy about the guy trying to give you air kisses! RUN!!!!

  38. Kathleen Says:

Frreee cookies? That restaurant sounds BALLER! Sounds like your Monday was tiring though, so hopefully the rest of your week goes well. YAY FOR TURKEY DAY SOOON!!!!

  39. naomi(onefitfoodie) Says:

hahaah I laughed when you said you tried to avoid the ‘air kisser’ :)

i totally agree with you on the stair thing…I can run 10 miles, but after going 2 flights of stairs I need to take a breather!

    youa re too much ;)

  40. Katie Says:

You can’t say no to fries and cookies. I know it’s a law punishable by jailtime!

Fell asleep doing yoga? YOU ROCK! LOL My mind races during savasana. I’m 2 or 3 weeks behind on the office eek.

I didn’t like Adam sucking the face off that other guy, but that’s just me. It was a little remiscent of Madonna and Britney but more face sucking. I wouldn’t care if he had just kissed the dude, but to suck his face off…Yeeea not such a good thing for kiddos to see.

  41. Katie Says:

    I ADORE brussel sprouts, yummyy!

    http://katiechangesforkatie.blogspot.com/

  42. Chelsea @ (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) Says:

Oh, this post makes me adore you more than I already do, you lil’ tart.

After guffawing about the savasana wake-up call, I marveled at that delicious looking lunch you had! Love tacos. Also, I COMPLETELY understand how awkward and nervous fancy places make you feel. I did not grow up in a fancy house, either. We basically ate meat loaf every night and watched “Jeopardy,” while doing so.” I’ll take NOT A FANCY HOUSE for $200, please!”

  43. Therese Says:

Oh man I am lusting after those Mahi tacos. They look absolutely delish!

Umm stairs are brutal! In college I used to run the stadium at UF…they called them Gator Mountains. Killer! Now I am tired if I go up 2 flights…

Girl I am in bed by 9 pm every night. I guess I am a 90 year old woman but I would be useless if I didn’t.

  44. brandi Says:

I love that you fell asleep on your mat – I’ve done that before, but never slept through the night :)

  45. Bethany Says:

Haha, I love that you fell asleep for the night on your mat.

  46. Erin Says:

SOOO easy to fall asleep during savasana! Been there, done that. I didn’t wake up 6+ hours later, but…

I don’t do much TV, so I missed the AMA’s and now everyone is talking about this supposedly scandalous Adam Lambert performance…I have no clue what’s going on! He’s creative, articulate, passionate, and not afraid to push the envelope. In my opinion, whatever he does artistically is his prerogative!

  47. Low Says:

Free cookies? Yes please! And yes, you did have to eat those fries or you surely would have been fired! It’s all part of that climb up the corporate ladder ;)

I didn’t think Adam Lambert’s performance was scandalous either. I thought it was unnecessary and that he tried way to hard. He has a unique voice, which is why I liked him on Idol, but you couldn’t even hear it with the frantic “let’s see how shocking I can be” antics he was putting on.

I love your balanced day! I kind of hope you just took a long bath and vegged out while watching the Office. You can do all that other stuff some other time :)

  48. emily (a nutritionist eats) Says:

I can’t believe you fell asleep on the yoga mat!!! You must have needed some rest! Hmm, I could really go for an Amy’s Shepard pie now too….
    xoxo!

  49. Tiffany S. Says:

I LOVE savasana! So funny that you fell asleep (but so glad in was in your own home!).

Hope you at least got to watch last week’s The Office. It was extra-cringey!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  50. Jenna Says:

Hahaha, this post cracked me up!! You are in need of a vacation my dear :)

  51. Bekah Says:

hahahaha I literally LOL about your waking up in savasana. hilarious. I kinda wish that would happen to me one day- I never actually do the savasana, when I’m doing a podcast. I know, silly.

    Love the restaurant eats!

  52. Julie @savvyeats Says:

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I do live in Madison, so if you ever want to meet up, let me know!

  53. Cindy Says:

oh nice day…who cares how many you get/got done…I’m still drooling over your “brussels”

so making those for supper tonight while NOT jogging but chasing JJ.

    MMMMMMMMMMM

  54. janetha Says:

“Grilled Mahi Mahi Tacos with Avocado-Cilantro Sauce”

    i die.

and now i want some almond butter…

and i wonder how much of your list was accomplished.. i am betting on 5/8 because i like to give you the benefit of the doubt :)

    xoxo

  55. Andrea@WellnessNotes Says:

A warm chocolate chip cookie sounds so nice… I could bake some right now, or I could finish grading essays…

I bet you accomplished at least 6/8! Am I right?!!!??? Regardless, I hope you enjoyed the rest of your evening… :)

  56. Gena Says:

Exquisit sprouts! They’re one of my “heat to eat” veggies :-)

  57. Faith Says:

I am loving your brussels sprouts! For some reason, they just set off a sprouts craving! :)

  58. Jenny Says:

as long as you knock watching “the office” off the least you’ve pretty much got all the priorities out of the way ;)

p.s. if your boss every needs to hire anyone to finish his (or her? not sure) chocolate chip cookies and french fries tell him (or her) I would be more than happy to oblige.

lots and lots of loveyyyy! xo
