Deprived

That’s what my body’s been from fruits + vegetables.  Dee-pry-vd.

I’ve spent practically all my non-food blogging days consuming mass quantities of carbs in the form of cookies, honey wheat twist pretzels, candy, cinnamon sugar almonds, buttered popcorn and other carbadelicious things I can’t even remember.  Quite frankly, it is most likely the cause of my fatigue, general sense of ‘offness’ and tiredness.  When I lack on the fruit + vegetables, my body does NOT like me.

Don’t get me wrong…I am all about livin’ it up Ja Rule-style during the holidays. However, as the title of my blog suggests, be an Everythingtarian, not a Carbatarian (as tempting as that is).

So this morning, I had a talkin’ to myself and laid down the healthy living law, starting with Pumpkin Coconut Oatmeal.

1/3 cup oats
1/3 cup water + 1/3 cup organic skim milk
pinch salt
1/3 cup canned pumpkin
drizzle of Xagave
cinnamon, nutmeg + ginger
Bekah’s Coconut Chia granola
small sprinkle coconut
almond butter

Perfection. And instead of eating my routine morning snack, I let my stomach tell me when it wanted to eat.  Novel idea, right? Letting your stomach actually growl once in awhile is pure crazy :) .

The growling commenced around 11:45am (about 4 hours after breakfast), and I decided it was time to bring in the big guns: a ginormous salad bar from my fave lil’ cafe

CIMG6527

That would be…

  • spinach
  • beets
  • green pepper
  • cucumber
  • carrots
  • broccoli salad
  • banana peppers
  • tomatoes
  • raisins
  • 1 hardboiled egg
  • 2 tbsp. cottage cheese
  • 1/4 cup garbanzos
  • cucumber yogurt dressing

With a Diet Coke and some honey wheat twist pretzels, let’s just say my stomach was very happy.  And by happy, I mean fiber-filled.  And by fiber-filled, I mean gassy.  And by gassy…well, you get the picture.

As an Everythingtarian, there is still ALWAYS room for treats.  Especially when they are at an office Christmas party with your co-workers and boss…and spiked hot chocolate enters the picture (again).

CIMG6530

One spiked hot chocolate (with Peppermint Schnapps), three delish cookies, a candy cane and a present exchange later, good times were had.  Maybe it was the Schnapps, maybe it was the spirit of the season or maybe it was the grand exchange of gifts…all I know is that when you can find a boss that supports drinking dee Schnapps at work, you keep her around as long as you can.

After work, I took a cue from this girl who got it from that girl who borrowed it from this girl and busted out an awesome 25-minute treadmill workout.

Gah…why have I skipped two weeks of workouts? I know I feel so much better when I just do it! After running, I went to a 75-minute Power Flow Yoga class, which was gl-gl-gl-gl-horious!

I ate a banana walking home from the gym, then devoured a yummy breakfast burrito when I actually arrived home…

sprouted grain tortilla
2 eggs
1 grated carrot
1 Sunshine Breakfast patty
salt + pepper

Yesterday, I also arrived home to a very special surprise.

I have to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to the incredible thoughtful, sweet and kind Janetha. Without me knowing anything, she completely surprised me by sending me a COFFEEMAKER!

CIMG6525

The thing is – it’s not even about the coffeemaker – it’s about the fact that she took the time to think of me and out of the generosity of her tiny soul (she’s 5’1′…for the record :) ), knew this was something I wanted.  I am so incredibly lucky to count Miss Janetha B. as a friend, as well as the rest of you in the blogosphere.

You are probably wondering when I am going to stop rambling.

Yeah, not quite yet.  First…

Alright…I think I am done.  This is what happens when you don’t get the chance to regularly blog – the rambling, bad jokes and giveaway reminders all come at once.  Which reminds me, I haven’t done a This and That post in awhile…

If you could be a singular food-tarian for a day (without any side effects), what would it be? For example, I would definitely be an icecreamatarian!

What’s the last random act of kindness someone did for you? Look above :) .

I’ve been ALL about the carbs lately – mostly because it’s all we have in the house. Bad news bears…but tasty. :-)

    1. I would be a cookietarian…no doubts. Cookies for all meals!
    2. I had a mom in my class come and clean my classroom for me today – it was so unexpectedly nice, it was THE last thing I wanted to do before I left for break, and I was practically bowing down at her feet.

    xoxo

oh, and I want your salad realllllllly badly right now.

  7. Julie @savvyeats Says:

I have just decided I am having some spiked hot chocolate after my final tomorrow. But with Bailey’s, because that’s what we have in the house.

Have you been to Bluephies on Monroe Street? I’m giving away their cookbook this week!

  8. Maya Says:

I hear ya on some of the carb loving–it didn’t affect me too bad during marathon training, but post marathon training I’m trying to watch it a little!
Plus I love hugh jass salads and fruit so really it’s not deprivation at all.

  9. Mama Pea Says:

Holy score on the coffee machine! And here I thought I was a good friend for sending you pirated cds. Uh, I mean pirate keys…to drive their boats with…

  10. Jamie Says:

definitely an icecreamtarian as well!! I can eat abnormally large amounts of ice cream without ever feeling full/sick/anything else that stops other people from eating so much ice cream :)

  11. BroccoliHut Says:

  19. Susan Says:

    Wow awesome workout girlie!
And I feel ya about the carbs. It seems this time of year all I want is hot carbs + nutbutter. Luckily I also have been craving hot sweetpotatos + nutbutter, but I think it might be turning me orange!

  20. Whitney @ Lettuce Love Says:

I would love to be an avocadoitarian! Mmmmm

  21. Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats Says:

    I would for sure be a cinnamontoastcrunchatarian for a day. Or a coolranchdoritoatarian…or an australianlicoriceatarian…or a thinmintatarian…this is fun!!!

  22. Morgan Says:

wineatarian. is that bad? I think it says a whole lot about me :)
I have 2 giveaways going on right now too!

  23. April Says:

I think our stomachs are feeling the same pain :D

I’d be a peanutbuttetarian for sure!!

  24. Jordan Says:

Tis the season for neglecting our fruit and veggie friends! The treats are just.so.good.
I’d be a hummusatarian, or a tahinitarian but the former means beans, and beans = gassy, and gassy = you know the rest ;)

  25. Abby (Nibble, Nourish, Run) Says:

    Mmm bread-and-cheese-tarian? Pizzatarian?? Yes please!

  26. Diana @ frontyardfoodie Says:

That salad looks incredible. I really really need one of those today.

  27. Whit Says:

This post totally helped motivate me to get my a$$ moving. ASAP. I feel like such a lazy bum of late, and I hate it. 25 min interval workout? I may steal it.

    YAY for coffeemakers!! And Janetha!

  28. Angharad Says:

    Pizzaandicecream-atarian. Yes, I am five.
Love you girl. I am so excited to run and hit up yoga tonight! Finally! Your mondo salad looks baller.

  29. Jenny Says:

Spiked hot chocolate at work sounds amazing, as does your office partayy! :)

That’s amazing of janetha, I love you both!

I would definitely DEFINITELY be a peanut butteritarian!!

  30. Andrea@WellnessNotes Says:

Cheesetarian! Definitely cheesetarian! :) But I really need to eat more fruits & veggies. In fact, that’s my goal today! :)

Oh, you so needed a coffeemaker. Janetha is the best!!!

  31. brandi Says:

i’m pretty sure that big salad balances out those festive treats – and I need a job where you work so I can join in on the spiked hot chocolate ;)

How sweet! Janetha is awesome – I’m so glad i got to meet her at Foodbuzz.

Hmm…I would have to have 2 things for a day: chocolatetarian for sweet and burger +onion ringtarian for savory…just so I won’t get sick of one thing :)

Last act of kindness done for me? Blondie mix and awesome recipe cards from Miss VeggieGirl herself.

    Happy happy Friday Holly!!!

  32. Rebecca Says:

    I want that huge salad!!!

Lucky you to get such a thoughtful gift!!

  33. Katharina Says:

Oh my gosh, girl! I know exactly how you feel. Those couple of weeks where I couldn’t get groceries I was living off cookies, bread, and all that stuff lol. It was yummy but I could feel my energy levels were down. I just felt sluggish and my skin totally broke out. It’s amazing to see how food can affect our bodies in little ways. It makes me wonder how much more energetic people would be if they ate more fruits and veggies. Anyway, your eats sound amazing. Pumpkin + coconut = yummmm. AND that hot cocoa is calling my name. Seriously.. ;)

I would be a fruitarian lol. I know those exist but it’s not exactly healthy hahaha. But if there were no side-effects I would eat fruits ALL day. I think this may be because I’m in Florida and everything just tastes fresher and when it’s cold and juicy and ohh soo good. Ok I’ll stop now.

My mom trimmed my hair for me the other day! And on top of that she massaged my head. Ahh I’m so glad that there are mothers in this world to spoil their children :D

  34. Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) Says:

great post, Holly! And I was Just going to blog about this today that although I love love love my chocolate and sweet treats, I crave veggies and if I dont get them, I feel all out of balance, out of whack, and pretty much horrible! This time of year though we are so prone to the cookie nibbles at parties syndrome :) it’s only natural to be a little low on the greenery. But I do crave it! Anyway I would be a chocolate or coffee-atarian for a day if I Could. ha!

  35. Kailey (SnackFace) Says:

Oooh honey, I would be a margaritarian. Actually, tortilla-chip-tarian! Or pita-chip-tarian. I LOVE CHIPS. Hahaha

I just received a card from my boss with the sweetest note ever. It completely made me “awwww.” Love her.

I felt this way last week! About not getting enough fruit+veg at all and prioritizing snackie food. That’s ma thang, but still! Then again, I haven’t even had ONE homemade holiday cookie, candy or anything. How sad is that?

Anyway, I love you and missed you yesterday. :) ))

  36. Evan Thomas Says:

    chocolatetarian for sure.
Yesterday I was all about the carbs! I think studying does that to me.
I love that you guys have spiked drinks at work, haha

  37. K Says:

Adult hot chocolate is zeeee best! That was my Christmas drink of choice last year! So fun!!

Aw – Janetha is the sweetest thing ever!! Hope you enjoy your coffee maker!

I’d be a mushroomatarian! The trail mix I received in the mail was one of the nicest things someone has done for me :)

  38. Low Says:

I want that salad more than life itself right now. It looks so amazingly delicious!

Love the schnapps at work sitch. Major envy ova here.

Yay for Janetha B being the sweetest damn girl around!

I think I’d have to be a Cheesetarian for a day, and if there weren’t any side effects a Fried Cheesetarian fo sho!

  39. Erin Says:

    I would be a Thaifoodtarian!

Janetha is the bestest! What a sweetie pie.

LOVE that brek wrapadoo thing. Yumz.

  40. Erica Says:

I would def be an oatarian! I could eat oatmeal for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day and never get sick of it :)

  41. katie Says:

girl-your blogs is one of my fav blogs to read!! :)
your eats are wonderful-we are twins bc i SO had some honey braided pretzel twists and a diet coke a few weeks ago and my tummy was goin to TOWN!

  42. Michelle Says:

Your salad looks GREAT. I’ve been eating like crap lately too and i’ve been FEELING like crap. :( Carbs ALL the way. I totally need to give myself a good kick in the butt so i can get back on this healthier eating track!! grrr

  43. emily (a nutritionist eats) Says:

I enjoyed reading about your carbs while I ate mine: dulce de leche cake, better than sex cake and pumpkin cheesecake. Yes – all on the same plate. It is a good day :)

  44. Jenna Says:

congrats on the coffeemaker from your girl janeetha!

  45. Jenny Says:

ah if only peanut butter and oats counted as veggies. Ah well, it looks like you certainly met your veggie quota with that salad. Num!

If I could, I would eat PB all day every day. No lie. It’s crack.

yayyyyy coffee! enjoy, girl. May I recommend adding some vanilla almond milk? It’s magic.

    lovie lovie lovie you!

  46. Graze With Me Says:

  47. Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) Says:

I would be a almondbutter-on-darkchocolatetarian. It makes my mouth happy. :D

Love the sound of your breakfast wrap. I never think to add carrots to the mix, but it’s such an easy way to “sneak” in some veggies.

And YAY for good bosses! :D

  48. Cindy Says:

    I would be a Kale-atarian…but only if it had NOOCH on it…so maybe I am a Nooch-atarian.

    who knows…but I seriously can’t get enough

    xo

  49. Chelsea @ (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) Says:

I loved this post! My body is similar in that it demands fresh fruits and veggies. I tend to go crazy on the carb train, which naturally derails my body’s sense of balance and well-being. Oh, railroad puns.

Your junk salad looks gorgeous. Looks like you got back on track in style!

Since I watch kids, drinking at work is generally not encouraged. However, in your case…the spiked hot chocolate is genius! Your boss seems tops.

  50. Bekah Says:

Ooo I love your bloggette trail with the workouts. He he. Also, yayyy for the granola on the oats! Looks rockin.

Lately I’ve been waking up hungry and letting my stomach growl in b/t meals, and I eat pretty frequently too, so those signs tell me I’m doing something right! Having a “too full” stomach has got to be one of my pet peeves. Don’t worry Holly, you’ll bounce back in no time.

Anddd, if I could eat anything? OMG. Tortillas. Ice cream. Cake. French toast. Granola w/ whole milk (big big bowls of it.) Reaally really good pizza. Yeah. That’s just right now too.

Aw that Janetha. She’s so sweet and nice, its not even funny.

  51. Lynn @ The Actors Diet Says:

aw that’s incredibly sweet of janetha!!!

  52. Emily (The Experimentarian) Says:

Awww! Yay for coffeemakers and Janetha! That salad makes me crave one–and it’s only 6:00 in the morning! We’ll see if that desire sticks around for lunch! xoxo

  53. Faith Says:

That lunchtime salad looks mighty good! Aww, how sweet of Janetha!

  54. Traci Says:

Spiked Hot Chocolate? Yum! Looks like my run will have to be the treadmill tomorrow too. We have a forecast here in Boston calling for 12-18 inches of the white stuff. UGH! Happy Weekend!

  55. Susan Says:

Ohmygosh, seeing that gift from Janetha makes me want to cry all over again!!!!!!! That is SO sweet of her and so deserving for you. Both of you are two ladies I lovelovelove. Okay. Sapfest over.

I eat on a pretty regimented schedule too. It’s so funny when I actually skip a snack to let my tummy growl. And soooo much more satisfying when I fill it back up again.

Did you WALK at 4.5 mph?? I have weirdo gazelle legs and I can’t even do that!

  56. Liz Says:

It looks like you have undeprived your body with that awesome salad. I really want to try some of that cucumber yogurt dressing. Sounds amazing!

  57. Gina Says:

Oooh my goodness, I’ve been deprived of some veggies too! That spiked cocoa is calling my name! :-P

  58. Katie Says:

I feel you on the carb loving… up until dinner tonight, everything I’ve even over the past few days have been of the beige and/or doughy variety. My tum is NOT pleased.

So kind of Janetha. I love the blogworld :-)

  59. devan Says:

i’d be a pumpkinatarian!! or appleatarian. or PBatarian. or all of the above combined-atarian!

your pumpkin oats look great.. i think i shall make that in the morning!

  60. Melissa Says:

I’b be a bellpepperatarian or a sushi-atarian… love my peppers and love my veggie rolls even more! : )

Love the blog! You’re too cute!

  61. Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) Says:

I would definitely be a peanut butter-tarian. Oh goodness, that would be wonderful!

Love your Friday eats (esp. the salad!) and awesome job on the treadmill workout! Inclines and speed changes work the body good :-)

Hope your weekend was a great one!
