a brand new week

in grocery shop,seriousness,workouts

It seems to me that if you want something NOT to happen, all you have to do is create a blog and write about it.

Chicago 1/2 Marathon? Yep, that never happened.

Not eat out for an entire month? Ha. Seriously. Did I say that?

Pay off my credit card? That DID happen. Then I swiftly undid it by going to Target, shopping at Anthropologie and flying to Washington D.C. for an epic weekend with Madeline. Oops.

Most recently, remember that Monkey Bar 30-Day Challenge? All I can say is #fail.

And it makes me mad.

I don’t like failing. At all. In fact, failing (or losing or not winning or being bad at something) ranks right up there with olives, rude people, whoever is dating Jake Gyllenhaal, migraines and E.T. the movie, which to this day, still gives me horrendous alien nightmares.

Lately, I’ve felt as though I am failing in just about every sphere of my life. You name it, I probably suck at it right now. And to be quite frank, it’s been getting me down. That’s why I knew it would be good for my Everythingtarian soul to take a thinking hiatus. After nearly a week of very minimal technology time, my problems may not be solved, but I’ve successfully caught up on both The Office + Modern Family, cleaned my apartment, finished a freelance project, visited family + friends in MN and saw Death Cab for Cutie in concert (top 5 concert ever, no lie).

I’m looking at this week as a new beginning and working on putting myself first again.

It’s a time to start anew.

A time to recommit to healthy eating + regular {endorphin-boosting} workouts.

A time to dream about the when, where and how Jake and I will finally meet + fall in love.

Most importantly, a time to splurge at the grocery store.

For a grand {whopping} total of $98.20, I got…

  • Low-fat Fig Newmans {SO good!}
  • 1 bunch asparagus
  • Hodgson Mill whole grain brown flaxseeds
  • cucumber
  • 9-grain bread
  • blackberries, blueberries + strawberries
  • bananas
  • Life cereal
  • 2 Luna bars {White Chocolate Macadamia Nut + Chocolate Peppermint Stick}
  • 2 Clif bars {Maple Nut + PB Pretzel Mojo}
  • cherry tomatoes
  • 1 lb. organic baby spinach
  • carrot sticks
  • red + green bell pepper
  • 2 apples
  • red onion
  • 1 lemon + 1 lime
  • avocado
  • 2 pears
  • 3 GT kombuchas
  • 1/2 gallon organic skim milk
  • Newman’s Light Honey Mustard dressing
  • pepperjack cheese sticks
  • tomato paste
  • 1 can black beans
  • mediterranean herb seasoning

Oh, and let’s not forget about these grocery cart additions…

Did I mention it’s time for a brand new do as well?

If you read Natural Light Auburn on the box, you would be correct.

I am now officially a redhead.

A time for a fun change.

Sometimes you gotta spice things up to keep it interesting, and I never thought I would say this after resisting dyeing my hair red for so long, but I actually like it.

It’s also a time for trying a completely new-to-me exercise: barre3.

Ballet barre + pilates + yoga = I can already hear my hamstrings screaming to me in pain.

So yes, a brand new week it is.

The best part? Brand new weeks will happen whether I write about them or not.

Not gonna lie, kind of in love with your blog. So happen to have found it!

My weekly list was eerily similar to yours. Sub Sam Worthington for Jake. Mmm hmmm.

my little celebration May 24, 2011 at 10:12 pm

Your new red do is gaw-geous.
Your grocery loot is perfection.
Your cheek bones are amazing.
I’m convinced barre3 is going to turn you into a curly haired ballerina.
I’m glad you’re back from your hiatus because dang, I missed you.

cheers!

Jessica May 24, 2011 at 10:20 pm

If you are eating Fig Newmans, you are winning at life my friend. Loving the red hair too!

Jessica May 24, 2011 at 10:21 pm

I love it! Come back to DC!!!

Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) May 24, 2011 at 10:43 pm

I’ve heard the Barre workout..rocks! Can’t wait to hear your review.

I know you’re trying to save money, not eat out, all that jazz..which is great…me too! So let me help you…you can save even more by making your own komboucha. It’s so easy, I can mail you a scoby and you will be making it for 1 cent per serving, not 2.99 or 3.99 per serving. Seriously! :)

Your new hair? LOVE IT!!

And congrats on being c.c. debt free. Or almost…I blogged about that for myself about 2-3 mos ago. AFter never having it, then having a ton, and now not having it again….so freeing. CONGRATS holly and you will get it widdled back down in no time :)

Shannon May 24, 2011 at 10:57 pm

Love the hair color! I am a dark auburn myself. Gotta love being a red head!!! :)
Glad to see you back! I totally know what you’re talking about not following through with what you plan on and it’s embarrassing when you say you’re going to do something on your blog and you don’t end up doing it! But we’re all human!
As far as your grand total for your groceries, I’ve totally done that before and it makes me cringe every time! Things add up especially when you’re trying to eat healthy!!!

Adam Deane May 24, 2011 at 11:06 pm

Dear Holly, You could pull off blue hair… I hope your week is refreshing, new, and all you would like it to be :)

One Healthy Apple May 24, 2011 at 11:54 pm

Hope you have a brand new week with a great start. New hair always makes me feel better too!

Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table May 24, 2011 at 11:55 pm

I LOVE your red hair. LOVE.

Good for you re-centering. I did the same thing tonight at Whole Paycheck… and spent a bit too much… but I bought myself flowers since no one else is doing that. ;)

Allison @ Allison's Delicious Life May 25, 2011 at 12:28 am

I love looking at the new week as a fresh start! I love getting new hair; it seems to make everything better!

Brenna [fabuleuxdestin] May 25, 2011 at 3:38 am

Your hair looks so cute! I love Fig Newtons! I’m assuming they’re the same ??

Erica May 25, 2011 at 3:42 am

Katie May 25, 2011 at 5:39 am

New hair style always makes me feel good! LOVE the color! U look fab!

U are fab, do not forget that, ok?!
love ya!

Lauren May 25, 2011 at 5:54 am

Okay, first….there is NO way you are failing at every aspect of your life. Just look at how happy you are! And how could you be failing with a fully equipped kitchen?? With all of that great grocery loot, you’re definitely WINNING! :)

Sometimes we all need to unplug and really disconnect in order to reconnect with ourselves. I need to do that more often actually. :)

PS- your hair looks HOT!

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey May 25, 2011 at 6:08 am

The wonderful thing about life is you can start fresh whenever you want. Sometimes it’s hard to get out of a funk, especially if you feel lik eyou’ve been having a hard time succeeding. I’m glad you’re telling your bad mood to suck it and moving on! :) You’re fantastic – and I, of course, love the new ‘do!

sofia May 25, 2011 at 6:15 am

girl, you set the bar superrrr high. not eat out for a month? are you nuts? and half marathons ain’t no joke when you’re working and being awesome full-time. cut yourself some slack! glad you are back-ish in blog land. you were missed!

Kat May 25, 2011 at 6:43 am

Thank you for writing this post! I feel the exact same way about my life right now, really puts things in perspective. We’re all struggling and it’s o.k. to admit it! xoxoxo

Sarah@The Flying ONION May 25, 2011 at 6:45 am

You look FABulous in red! I love it. :D

And yay for brand new weeks and entirely new workouts and shopping trips that leave you with all kinds of fresh goodies. :D

Madeline @ Greens and Jeans May 25, 2011 at 6:57 am

Here is a fun fact for you, when next week is a brand new week it will be June, and when it is June it means I am only one month away from seeing you!!!

Susan May 25, 2011 at 7:08 am

LOVE you as a red head. I always knew you were a spicy mama, and now everyone can see it!

I’m glad you took your hiatus because although I’ve missed your face, it sounds like it was healthy for you.

This is random, but I have a music rec for you because I feel like we have some similar tastes. Theo & Mirah. Rubies & Rocks. You’re welcome ; )

Kaleigh May 25, 2011 at 7:23 am

Sometimes you just have to take a break and go grocery shopping! I hope you get your groove back, because you really are quite groovy :) And p.s., be kind to yourself! I bet there were a million things that you DID accomplish while you were not accomplishing those other things!

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) May 25, 2011 at 7:37 am

Aw girl, I feel like a failure sometimes too (which is crazyyyyy because I know that we are both awesome, successful ladies). I think it’s the curse of the Type-A personality. What usually makes me feel better is making a list of all that I’ve got goin’ on – full time job, strong family and friendships, no criminal record (hehe), mean baking skillz, etc.

And even when I get in these funks, you’re right – it’s necessary to remind myself that each day and each week is a brand new start. So today is going to be a winning day. I’m calling it.

brandi May 25, 2011 at 8:41 am

love LOVE the red :) I was red a long time ago – so fun!

Andrea@WellnessNotes May 25, 2011 at 8:57 am

LOVE the new hair! And I love how “new hair” makes you feel… :)

Sounds like the technology break was good for you! Have a great new week! :)

Lindsey @Textbooks and Cookbooks May 25, 2011 at 9:11 am

Pepper jack string cheese?? How did I not know this existed? I can’t wait to try some :)

Elizabeth@The Sweet Life May 25, 2011 at 9:17 am

Aww..I know how you feel. It’s so hard. I find that making a list and proceeding with purpose really helps–as does cutting yourself some slack!

Adey May 25, 2011 at 11:42 am

Just want to say that your blog rocks! I totally understand how you feel…Sometimes all we need is a fresh start! :)

Carbzilla May 25, 2011 at 11:49 am

Welcome to the red side!!!
I think this is a weird time of year for a lot of folks. We went from rainy to allergy. I’ve been thinking about taking a break but then I would lose my 5 loyal readers. What to do, what to do?
I just keep trying to change things up until ANYTHING gets better. This week I think that string cheese just might be the cure. Big hugs!

Lauren http://theclimbingchef.blogspot.com/ May 25, 2011 at 12:16 pm

Welcome back :) I love the new hair color… nothing like a change to make your week start off great! Those groceries look delicious (especially the newtons) and your new workout kind of scares me :)

Hope you have a fabulous week!!

lo May 25, 2011 at 12:29 pm

i see none of those as failures…i think u do great no matter what. i sometimes think when we say we are going to do something grand and huge in our life, a huge pressure is put on us. I am no longer being vegan, but rather a vegan/vegetarian/who will eat whatever she wants when she craves whatever she wants. During this challenge, with work and school i had no time to cook or grocery shop, so i was eating bread for every meal and spending too much $ at vegan restaurants….I felt like a failure if i quit, but honestly at this time in my life, i don’t want to be a vegan. I know its prob healthier to eat plant based, but it really wasn’t for me because i wasn’t eating veggies, fruits, etc, since i had no time to prepare them. After a long phone call with momo, she said “u dont fail if u stop doing something, u merely are changing your mind.” She is great. As are you. I really hope we can have fun this summer, eat a burger and drink a margarita.

sorry for this crazy long a$$ comment :)

lolo

Frances May 25, 2011 at 1:41 pm

I’ve been in a down-slump for a bit, too. It helps to take some time for yourself and regroup. REgardless of what you think, you’re not failing- not accomplishing one thing or another is just the way life goes sometimes. Make new goals! It does hurt to feel under-accomplished, but know, just for future reference, that no one (at least none of your readers) thinks you’re falling short.

also, if you ever come to cleveland, let’s go for a run.

emily (a nutritionist eats) May 25, 2011 at 1:56 pm

It makes me sad that you feel like you are failing at aspects of your life. I didn’t even TRY to do any of those things…I think you should consider it “re-evaluating things” :)

Emily May 25, 2011 at 2:42 pm

Re: Failing at stuff…meh…you are winning at being you. xoxo

Megan (Braise the Roof) May 25, 2011 at 2:44 pm

All right, first of all, these are the reasons that you do NOT fail:

1. You are an excellent tour guide and photo-op’er.
2. Your futon is super comfy. Especially for blogger spooning.
3. You appreciate the fine things in life such as fried cheese curds and beers.

Also, I love the hair color!

Also also, Balls 4 Life.

Michelle @ A Voracious Appetite May 25, 2011 at 3:41 pm

LOVE the red hair! I’m quite partial to red heads myself :-) I also love that Mousse. I’m using it now to combat the lovely humidity that’s taken NYC prisoner. I’ll be wearing a mousse helmet all summer. Gotta beat the frizz somehow!

Danielle May 25, 2011 at 4:29 pm

My word, you are the most BEAUTIFUL REDHEAD I have ever seen.

Failure? What’s that? You win, win, win, girlie girl. All day, every day. Especially with the new ‘do. :)

Katie May 25, 2011 at 6:19 pm

LOVE your hair! A lovely, summery change. And you totally own it.

I really want to try barre workouts, but um- and this is a really really silly question- do you NEED a bar? Because I definitely don’t have one of those installed in my bedroom and the closest thing to that is probably the railing on the staircase at the high school a few blocks away, and I’m pretty sure I’d get arrested if I went in there. ANYWAY.

Mackenzie @ Whatever, Gatsby May 25, 2011 at 8:58 pm

I LOVE LOVE BARRE! so hard! for now i just subsist off of free work outs i finagle via the internet. oh, sisterfriend. amen to announcing goals over the blogosphere. i am the queen of silly goal making. but what’s life without silly goals?

AND HOLLA FOR BEING A FELLOW PSEUDO GINGER! it’s much more fun to be on the red-side.

Maren May 25, 2011 at 9:37 pm

I love the fresh outlook on life Holly :) Always look to you for inspiration! And you probably made all of your readers feel better for admitting to be human ;) I would love to meet you sometime. Is that weird? You just seem like someone that I would relate to in so many ways. Oh, and I love the new hair!! It’s totally subtle, but it’s so appropriate for summer!…even though it doesn’t feel the least bit like summer.

Lauren @ WWoB May 26, 2011 at 12:17 am

I have never commented before but I absolutely had to when I realized we were somehow separated at birth… I, too, despise olives, rude people, Jake Gyllenhaal significant others, migraines and E.T.
You are not a failure – dont be silly. You are a fabulous writer, hilarious, and a wonderful person. Atleast, that is my impression from following your blog for a couple months. :)

Marika May 26, 2011 at 5:20 am

I saw Death Cab in concert about 5 years ago and it was also one of my top concerts ever. I think it was the only concert I ever cried during.

Good luck with spicing things up! You are totally not failing at everything, but I certainly understand that feeling. I get it sometimes too.

Kate @ NaturaStride May 26, 2011 at 9:29 am

Great post – sometimes life just gets in the way. But even though you haven’t necessarily completed the specific goals you set – it sounds like you’ve been keeping yourself busy with other fabulous things! You also have a good, positive outlook for future goals – good for you! Looking forward to hearing how the barre3 goes!

Tori (Fresh Fruition) May 26, 2011 at 10:18 am

The hair looks great! I’ve been a redhead quite a few times. I used to dye my hair every month but I stopped since it was frying my locks! My hair’s really fragile.

Jess May 26, 2011 at 2:56 pm

LOVE the red hair, girl!!

I love the new outlook–a brand new week. You can do it :D

Mari @ itsgoodno.blogspot.com May 26, 2011 at 3:10 pm

I am so glad I found your blog because I can relate so well. The past 6 months have been really tough for me and I keep getting bogged down with the same exact thought “I am failing at everything”. Something I am working on though is not measuring my self worth by the number in my bank account and the number on the scale.

and…Learning that its your accomplishments that define you, not your failures, can be difficult…but once you do, life is good!

Susan May 27, 2011 at 5:05 pm

Bahaha, I have committed to sooooo many things and then flaked out on them. I’ve stopped blogging about goals because I feel like in writing them down for the world to see I somehow freak out and talk myself out of doing them in fear of something. I don’t know what.

Also, I LOVE Death Cab For Cutie!!! Sososoo cool. They were one of the first bands I listened to when I made the transition from punk rocker to indie rocker. Plus, Ben’s voice just soothes my soul.

I’m happy to see you took a bit of a well-deserved break. I took one a few weeks ago and it was just what I needed. Taking a step back allowed me to see what kind of role I really want my blog to play in my life. There was a time I wanted to be a full-time blogger and dedicated SO much time to it. Nowadays, it’s 30 min TOPS a day. Just a small, fun excuse to do some recreational writing, photography, and communicate with the people out in internetland :)
