A Coffee Shop Saturday Morning

Based on the picture above, you, my dear reader, could be thinking several things…

“What a lovely Saturday morning spent at the coffee shop reading blogs, People.com + catching up on the latest breaking news and just enjoying the laziness of the weekend!”

– or –

“Oooohhh, look at her go! All motivated to do work on a Saturday morning with a yummy breakfast sandwich, yogurt parfait and jumbo coffee in tow. You go girl!”

– or –

“Clearly, Holly was too lazy to make her own breakfast this morning so she went to the coffee shop and rationalized if she could get work done, somehow that $8.75 spent on breakfast would be worth it.”

In reality, my Everythingtarian brain was actually thinking…

“Holly, you drove four hours to Minnesota, overslept, missed a 10-mile race you were thinking about running with your brother-in-law this morning, left the house to visit your grandpa, walked to your car to discover you locked the car keys in your sister’s house, tried to break in the house, realized that wasn’t possible, called a cab to drive you 1.2 miles to the local Caribou Coffee and now have to sit here and make yourself productive (and reread all the sweet comments on my last post) until your sister + brother-in-law pick you up.”

I really wish I was making this stuff up.

But alas, that is why I am having a coffee shop Saturday morning.

What is your ideal Saturday morning? I enjoy sleeping in, lazily eating breakfast + drinking coffee, putzing around my apartment and dancing in my PJs to the Glee soundtrack.

Usually on the weekends I make a nummy breakfast, drink some coffee and check out facebook, twitter, etsy, blogs, and the teachsoap forum while my hubby plays video games. We usually don’t motivate until noon… :) love it!

Chris April 9, 2011 at 11:02 am

Oh come on. From the photos you are enjoying a great breakfast. Take it in stride, for tomorrow is another day. I’m usually at work on Saturday mornings, however I devote Sunday to coffee and some type of baked good.

Take Care!

Boo….lamesauce. Sorry about the unfortunate events. But hey, this seeming Fail –> Win, because of the delicious treat breakfast and quality time with yourself, right? ….Right?

My favorite Saturdays are similar — slow breakfast, slow coffee sippin’, putzing, generally being awesome. The usual.

Seriously, sorry about the race :/ At least you have a good bra on right now though, right? ….Right?

A long run always sets the tone for my weekend ;)

Mama Pea April 9, 2011 at 11:10 am

Still looks pretty damn good to me…

Laura April 9, 2011 at 11:10 am

What city in MN are you in?! I live in MN too

Susan April 9, 2011 at 11:15 am

I can’t wait for lazy Saturday mornings again! Once the semester ends – no more work or tiptoeing around the strange dudes on my couch haha. My dream is a multi-course breakfast of fruit, bread/oatmeal, and eggs, plus trashy television, a crossword puzzle, and whole pot of coffee just for me!

I’m actually at a coffee shop now too. I think it’s easier to be productive. Of course I am reading your blog…but that’s productive for my mental health right? Right.

T April 9, 2011 at 11:24 am

That sandwich looks good.:)

Sana April 9, 2011 at 11:28 am

I adore you, I would have picked you up instead of a cab and we would have gotten lost a millions times, but we would be eating pancakes. Or cupcakes.

Maryea {Happy Healthy Mama} April 9, 2011 at 11:32 am

Sleeping in on Saturday mornings seems like a distant dream to me. Ahhhh life before kids. :-)

Lindsey @Textbooks and Cookbooks April 9, 2011 at 11:34 am

That’s crazy! Hopefully that awesome looking breakfast can semi-make up for that!

I love lazy Saturday morning…like today. Woke up around 9…drank coffee/ate breakfast slowly as I caught up on blogs..in my pjs :)

your auntie April 9, 2011 at 11:56 am

just read you lament to bumps, he LHAO…harrylarious-hope to still see you. OBTW, he said typical holly.

That is quite the morning! Was the sandwich at least worth it? On days that I don’t work, I would love to say that a nice long run or training session always happens on Sat morning to start the weekend off, but what usually ends up happening is that I wake up a little later, contemplate making the world’s best pancakes with fresh maple syrup but settle for a breakfast taco with the leftovers from the week thrown in… Then I also contemplate having the world’s best workout (which sometimes happens) but usually end up finding an excuse to go to the grocery store and spend 1/2 the $$ I have made during the week. I come home, feel bad about the money I have spent, see if I can pick up an extra shift on the weekend, procrastinate readings until Sunday night, check Expedia.com for the ULTIMATE deal on a plane ticket to Austria (which I am convinced will happen one day), add hundreds of dollars worth of books I would like to read to my Amazon cart, watch them sit there for the next few weeks, screen calls from my friends who are most likely drunk and needing a ride home from a bar (in which case I always end up going to pick them up anyway), and the best part of my Saturday: READ YOUR BLOG :) And truthfully, sometimes that is the best part of my day! On days that I don’t work at all I usually try to spend all day outside, which is also awesome!

Erica April 9, 2011 at 12:34 pm

whoops ;). At least the parfait looks delicious? Ideal Saturday morning means teaching a class, doing a little cleaning around the house and then having the whole afternoon to be lazy.

Mimi (Gingersnaps) April 9, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Holly, I love you. That story is epic.

Poor sweetie — I hope you got some work/blog reading done.

I actually hate sleeping in in general. It makes me feel lazy. So my ideal weekend is getting up mid-morning and getting in a workout (before my motivation fizzles) having a nice post-workout smoothie/shake, and mapping out my dad. Throw in some blog reading too, of course.

Crystal April 9, 2011 at 2:19 pm

I’m just happy to know that I’m not the only person that these type of things happen to!

Katie April 9, 2011 at 2:21 pm

Haha, I’ve had mornings like that. But, I have to say – it looks pleasant – regardless of how you ended up there. My perfect Saturday morning usually involves some exercise (this morning was a walk), some baking, and hopefully getting some things knocked off of my to-do list. Usually cleaning. I don’t enjoy cleaning, but I really enjoy things BEING clean.

sarah (sarah learns) April 9, 2011 at 2:57 pm

i deal saturday? sleep in, snuggle time in bed, hot oats + coffee, farmers market!

Lauren http://theclimbingchef.blogspot.com/ April 9, 2011 at 2:58 pm

Luckily, I spend every Saturday in the best fashion. With my mom, sister, coffee, yard sales, thrift storing, farmers market…. Well, I’m just about to write my blog about is so…. READ ME, and you will know :)

I hope you at least got some good coffee while you waited!

Lauren April 9, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Awww, you poor thing!! At least breakfast looks yummy. :)

denise April 9, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Lazy breakfasts happen! I happen to work at a Caribou in DC, so I may be biased with your choice…

Love your blog…and your humor!

You never fail to make me laugh hysterically. That sounds like my kind of mess up for sure. The husband is always bailing me out on things.

After touring my NY visitor around Spain for a week my Saturday morning reeeelaxxxing! Breakfast, coffee, couch. Oh yeah… and can’t forget Dawson’s creek!

Meister @ The Nervous Cook April 9, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Oh dear, I hope your Sunday morning makes up for today’s comedy of errors!

Saturday mornings are my favorite of the week — sometimes I’m so excited about Saturday morning I have a hard time falling asleep on Friday night! There’s a 6:30am walk with my pup; prepping bread dough to bake, which goes into the oven once I come back from my last 7-mile run of the week; a fresh press pot of coffee and muesli with fruit while reading the New York Times; and another walk with the pup to the farmers market for apples, mushrooms, and my very favorite cookie in the whole world.

Sigh… just writing all that out makes me wish I could relive it again already. Oh well — there’s always next week!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) April 9, 2011 at 9:12 pm

Oh Holly. I am soooo sorry. holy moly you had a day. The oversleeping/race, key lockout, etc…oh hugs honey!

You more than deserved your time at Caribou and related 8.75!!

Question…do you blog from WP’s platform or do use Ecto and run Parallels or VMWare on your Mac? I need to blog faster, dont want to run those software prog’s b/c they bog down my machine and Ecto and I are glitch-prone. Noticing you have a Mac and I know you’re hella busy, what’s your blogging preferred platform? I just blog old school directly from WP and it’s…slow!

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) April 10, 2011 at 6:39 am

You’ve convinced me to go out for breakfast next weekend. This looks fabulous. And if breakfasts had personality, which I believe they do, yours would be screaming “cozy.” Despite the locked car keys. Which, by the way, I have the horrible habit of doing. Except I tend to lock them in my car while the car is still running. Yes. Fun times.

Have a happy Sunday, Holly! :D

Anna April 10, 2011 at 8:56 am

I love a Saturday when I can sleep in as long as I would like, eat a decadent and leisurely breakfast, sip on coffee while I catch up on blogs, and only do things that make me very happy. Chores and homework are for Sunday.

Just discovered your blog – it’s so lovely!

Ashley @ 365 things April 10, 2011 at 9:29 am

As long as I have a little coffee, I’m open for anything on a Saturday morning! Well that and at least a *lil* food! haha

Stacy April 10, 2011 at 9:47 am

But, on the bright side you had your computer and wallet :) So you’re not just sitting outside waiting for them to let you in the house.

Teri [a foodie stays fit] April 10, 2011 at 6:51 pm

haha! Oh so funny. I love that you got stuck there so that we could chat!! LOVED it!

My perfect Saturday looks a lot like today: sleep in a bit, have a leisurely breakfast and read a bit, then go for a long run followed with an iced coffee and sit on the deck in the sunshine. Now it’s time for dinner and some wine!

Jessica @ Healthy Dairyland April 11, 2011 at 2:28 pm

I too went to Caribou this weekend and I thought of you when I tried to order their new coconut macadamia mocha. They were all out of the coconut syrup. :( I always think you when I consume coconutty foods since you no longer like it. Don’t worry. I’m eating your ration of coconut.
