A Concert and A Square

Every Wednesday during the month of July, a touch of class graces the downtown Capitol square in the form of something us Madisonians refer to as Concerts on the Square.

The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra plays. People lay down blankets. They bring out their best 1980s lawn chairs. Wine bottles are uncorked. Food, in the form of everything from hearty bacon-wrapped weenies to sophisticated baguettes with fresh bruschetta topping, is consumed. Gorgeous classical music calms the crowd. Porta potties line the streets. And laughter is heard.

Lots of laughter.

Did I mention this all starts at about 3pm?

Wisconsin isn’t the #1 drinking state for no reason.

Yesterday was no different.

In fact, it was even better.

Any night that ends with me trying to drop peanut M&Ms into my mouth and a friend on hand willing to help me catch that moment on camera is a perfect summer night in my book.

Plus, I made two new healthy living friends who love sweet potato fries, tofu dip, Daiya cheese and wine as much as I do. Even better, I was able to tell them all about the wonderful world of kombucha and banana soft serve they have yet to explore.

A successful night, if I do say so myself.

Friends, food, wine, music and sun.

Really, besides Jake Gyllenhaal by my side, what more could I need?

I’m shocked that Wisconsin beat out Pittsburgh with all the pyscho Steeler fan drunks we have ’round these parts!

Hmmm, it’s not the number 1 drinking state that attracts me. It’s the cheeeeeese. I need to get me into wisconsin, through smuggling or something. Did you know I’ve never been more West than Alabama? o_0

Naomi(www.onefitfoodie.com) July 1, 2010 at 8:36 pm

Ilana July 1, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Mel July 1, 2010 at 9:13 pm

Haha, as if you needed proof about us being the drunkest state! ;) That sounds like so much fun, I may have to make the boy come out there with me one Wednesday.

Madeline - Greens and Jeans July 1, 2010 at 9:34 pm

Just further proof why I need to come live in your front room!

Diana @ frontyardfoodie July 1, 2010 at 9:40 pm

Love the trusty Conquista Malbec – it’s a gem isn’t it?! Well, concerts on the square sound just lovely. I’ll take one of those please. Followed by a side of how is it not Friday yet?

Lucky you having that happen “at work”. Love it.

Lauren July 2, 2010 at 5:57 am

Such a wonderful evening! That picture of you just seems to sum it all up! Relaxing music, great food, good wine and tons of fun! :)

Glad you had a great time. Happy Friday girl!

Jenna July 2, 2010 at 6:24 am

Looks like funnnn!

Heather (Perspective Is Everything) July 2, 2010 at 6:26 am

Ah-i need to make it 25 miles west to see the Concerts on the Square soon!
and yes, Wisco is a hardcore drinking state………our family from Seattle flew in and went to a couple Brewer games with us last weekend.
They were utterly shocked at the mass amounts of tailgaiters, bean bag toss games, and open-intoxicants being carried into Miller Stadium.
In Seattle, they’d be arrested for trying that.
“Welcome to Wisconsin!”

Sami July 2, 2010 at 9:22 am

absolutely wonderful. glad you’re enjoying all that summer has to offer! you’re right, it doesn’t get much better than that!

The Fit Collegiate July 2, 2010 at 9:22 am

I love concert on the square!!!! When my sister lived there a few summers, we’d go with a plate of cheese and crackers, play cards, then walk over to The Blue Marlin for dinner. You’re making me nostalgic over here…

Megan @ The Oatmeal Diaries July 2, 2010 at 9:53 am

Is Wisconsin really the #1 drinking state?! Very impressive! That looks like so much fun, and I agree there is nothing better than bonding over banana soft serve and tofu!! Oh, and peanut m&ms of course.

Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) July 2, 2010 at 9:55 am

That is the perfect day! It’s basically the eiptome of summer. Love it! :D

samantha July 2, 2010 at 10:10 am

in DC there is jazz in the sculpture garden every friday, which i STILL haven’t made it to because i’m a weenie. outdoor FREE concerts are the best. as are picnics. glorious!

Lindsey @ Foodie on the Rocks July 2, 2010 at 10:15 am

hahaha, i thought wisconsin was known for cheese?? the drinking thing is just the icing on the cake. are they taking applications?

Kacy July 2, 2010 at 10:27 am

Drinking outside and outdoor, live music are two of my fave things ever. Combine them, and I’ve died and gone to heaven. Add food, and I really might die.

Katie July 2, 2010 at 10:57 am

haha “don’t pour alcohol on the grass” – what a good rule. Sound like a blast Holly Girl! Also – kombucha was recalled in Colorado – it’s nowhere to be found!! I’m so sad…do you still have access to it there? I’m hoping it will make a reappearance soon.

Emily July 2, 2010 at 3:24 pm

that sounds like a pretty perfect night. lately I’m obsessed with milkshakes; that’s the one thing I can imagine that might possibly improve on your evening :)

Rosey Rebecca July 2, 2010 at 4:09 pm

That looks like so much fun! Drinking wine and laying on a blanket sound like glorious activities to me.

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) July 3, 2010 at 1:54 am

kombucha, banana softserve = staples round here!

this reminds me of SO MANY outdoor quaint, funky, artsy outdoor concerts and art fairs and good old fashioned summertime stuff that i did in MN and Chicago.

So glad you had fun, Holly! Thanks for stopping by today too..loved hearing from you :)

Holy crap on a stick, Jake Gyllenhaal would be the TOP ARM CANDY OF MY LIFE! Hands down. Well actually, hands not down ’cause if he was by my side I’m sure they would be going through his luscious locks.

Man, I’ve been dreaming of a moment like that for TOO LONG! :)

But I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to find your blog! I like yo’ style. And sense of humor, it’s pretty similar to mine :) AND MY DREAM IS ALSO TO BE ON SNL!!! It’s gonna happen. I can feel it. ;) But I can’t wait to read more, and I also read that Lady Gaga quote you posted up a while ago and repeat it to myself quite a bit. Love love love it!

Claire July 4, 2010 at 6:05 am

Looks like a lot of fun :-) Really relaxing……

Kristin (Salty Tooth) July 4, 2010 at 8:53 am

Aww, day drinking in parks, one of the the main reasons I love and live in Wisconsin!

Little Bookworm July 4, 2010 at 11:18 am

The concert sounds fun. Hope you have a great evening!

Erica D July 4, 2010 at 4:08 pm

My mom used to direct a summer music series featuring classical orchestras when I was very little, so I have fantastic memories of all you just described – the food, the wine, the blankets, the summer bliss – off in some part of Connecticut woods that I have long forgotten the location of. It looks great on the Square!

thisgirlgetsit July 5, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Wow, this looks like sooo much fun! Any activity with the beautious outdoors, great music, and great food has got me sold! Glad you had such a good time :-)

Susan July 9, 2010 at 3:18 pm
