If you put protein powder in anything, it automatically makes it healthy, right?
Please say yes! Because the only reason I added protein powder in this recipe was that I could rationalize drinking both servings (that’s two) after a tough 60-minute bootcamp class today.
Because truth be told, I’m not a huge fan of protein powder or working out during the summer.
But I am one for rationalizing.
So let’s go with it! Ice cream, chocolate soy milk and protein powder make for the perfect post-workout fuel. You’ve got protein…and protein…and more protein! And isn’t protein necessary for building muscle and making one get totally ripped? I really, really hope so because I’m feeling a bit “soft” lately. Think the Pillsbury dough boy with an afro and cute kelly green ballet flats.
Luckily, moving apartments this past week gave me some calf and arm toning but let me be honest with you, this Everythingtarian needs a lot more help than carting cardboard boxes can provide. So, I’m hitting the gym and doing some stair workouts and opening up my hips real wide at yoga and drinking more protein shakes in MY NEW ROOMMATE”S VITAMIX.
Yes she has a Vitamix blender, and yes it is just as amazing as you think.
Banana Nutella Protein Malts are the perfect beverage for us (ahem, me) trying to get back into the swing of things. And you can thank Daddy Everythingtarian for the recipe inspiration!
You see growing up, everyone in my family had a very distinct Dairy Queen order.
Mama E was all about the Krunch Cone. I loved Buster Bars and Peanut Butter Cup Blizzards. My three sisters rotated between chocolate dipped cones, Nerds Blizzards and cherry slushies. And as for Daddy E…there is nothing that man loves more in the world than a Chocolate Banana Malt.
Daddio, these Banana Nutella Protein Malts are just as good as the real thing.
They’re like dessert, but one you can totally rationalize serving at summer BBQs or kid parties or just to your friend who you conned into working out with you because you knew you never make it to the gym solo. Thanks Stephanie. You can also just drink it for fun, because well…life is short.
Or so I rationalize.
Banana Nutella Protein Malt
adapted from Silk’s Nutty Chocolate Kiss
Prep time: 5 minutes
1 cup Silk chocolate soy or almond milk
1 banana
2 heaping T chocolate hazelnut spread
1 scoop protein powder*
2 T malt powder
1/2 cup vanilla ice cream**
4 to 5 ice cubes
*The only protein powder I use is Tera’s Whey, locally made here in the Madison area
**I used Stonyfield Farms’ Oikos Vanilla Greek Frozen Yogurt
In a blender or food processor, blend all ingredients until smooth.
Makes two servings

Fabulous photos lady and this smoothie looks absolutely perrrfect!
Clearly, the protein powder’s healthiness cancels out the ice cream. :-) Sounds so good, especially after a sweaty workout!
Malt powder! That’s a great idea to change up the flavor of protein shakes!
All I see here is Nutella, so automatically I love this.
My blender broke last week and I want to CRY looking at this recipe. I may even have to go buy a new one…just for you (or your recipe). How’s that for rationalizing?
Everything looks prettier when it’s served in a mason jar :) BTW, I just bought some nutella yesterday and there is some chocolate silk in my fridge. It’s fate!
Oh man. Stop it right now. Nutella in liquid form? I’m not generally a shake person, but this could convert me.
omg. you made out like a BANDIT with scoring a roommate with a vitamix! SCHWING!
I’ve never thought to put Nutella in a smoothie (which, now that I think about it, is a bit sad), but that’s genius. Genius! I usually save Nutella for eating by the spoonful (or fingerful), so maybe I should give this a shot haha.
well this looks delicious!! I’m celiac, so malt is out of the question. I would definitely sub in maca powder for the malt-like flavor and for a huge boost in energy! you could definitely make this vegan too with coconut milk ice cream… mmmm… I really wish I wasn’t at work right now!
I’m not a material girl, but BOY what I wouldn’t give to own a Vitamix! ;)
I haven’t been to Dairy Queen in years, but my favorite ice cream was, and always will be, Peanut Buster Parfaits. I could totally go for one right now actually…
Mmmm this sounds goood.. I haven’t been to Dairy Queen in AGES. My family used to go all the time for a cone.
