Be kind, please remind.

in breakfast,dinner,lunch,seriousness

Once in awhile, we all need reminders.

Sometimes that reminder comes from your well-meaning mother telling you not to forget to start your day with a hearty breakfast. Luckily, Mama Everythingtarian knows this isn’t a problem with me.

She got off easy on that one, because “Remember to eat breakfast sweetheart!” is probably the only reminder I DON’T need in life. “Remember to put on underwear after showering!” however – now that is a completely different story.

Because, let’s be real, how could I forget to enjoy drippy, runny and oozy crunchy peanut butter on toasted Ezekiel bread with mashed naner and a delicate sprinkle of Apple Pie Spice…

Most of the reminders I do in fact need are ones that can only come from others. Sometimes, it takes the kind words of a friend to realize that I do have talents worth using, utilizing and making good use of. Fear for some is a powerful motivator; for me, it’s a powerful hindrance.

And I need to let it go.

Mama Everythingtarian is good with putting up with my rampant craziness and reminding me that everything is going to be okay. That saint of a woman must rise with fear every morning wondering what randomness I will call her about that day.

Friend issues?

Food recommendations?

Work woes?

Crazy travel ideas?

Complaints about life in general?

Luckily, I give her REALLY GOOD food recommendations, so I like to think that all of her lovely reminders are paid back with delicious recipes, tasty cooking and fun ideas from yours truly.

I mean, I did introduce her to sweet potato fries.

That in itself is worth its weight in parental advice.

A personal reminder to myself? Remember to take pictures of the insides of food.

People need a closer look. I mean, I had no idea what a Larabar looked like until I saw some blogger take a picture of it outside its packaging. So, you may not know what a Falafel Sunshine Burger looks like unless I give you that same chance to see this vegan burger unwrapped + out of the box.

Let me remind you that eating ice cream (slash banana soft serve) for dinner is completely acceptable. I mean, as long as you add peanut butter (protein + healthy fat), cinnamon (antioxidants) and chocolate (carbs?) to your frozen banana concoction, it makes for a well-rounded meal…

Maybe most of all, I need a reminder to trust myself.

Novel concept, right?

Because if I put my complete faith in the multitude of talents, skills and gifts given uniquely to me, then I wouldn’t complain, procrastinate, fear or doubt what I can do. Instead, I would possess the self-confidence in myself to know that – no matter what anyone says, thinks or believes – I am enough.

In a couple days or one week, when I forget all the words of wisdom I’ve written in this post, would you be so kind as to please remind?

Oh MY GAAAWD!!!!! Go read my post. Are we the same person? Just wondering.

Why is it that we can’t just BE BOSSAY and fully believe in everything we have. We have so many gifts and talents. I vow that we start celebrating and sharing them and flaunting them every day. It’s the only way we’re going to get what we want. I swear!

Because I feel that we both need this:

ah, to trust oneself is quite a challenge. for most of my early academic career my teachers told me that I don’t trust myself as a writer, or all-around student for that matter. with trust comes success (or, more likely comes success), and it is with a new sense of confidence and trust in my abilities that i’ve been able to DO more. totally vital to achieving yo’ dreams ‘n’ stuff. yep.

i like this post. you should write a self-help/ memoir-y kind of book. i don’t buy those often, but i’d buy yours.

love to you, lady!

It’s so easy to forget to trust ourselves, isn’t it? Love this post, Holly.

And I’m loving your breakfast. I think I’ll be having the same tomorrow morning. :D

why is it though when a mom reminds her children of whats best we are…nagging,,,,bitching….intruding etc. hehehehe

Kacy July 22, 2010 at 9:09 am

I never need to be reminded to eat, period. But those other things, yeah I could use a reminder. Sucks how we let fear get in the way sometimes. Happens to me all the time. But YOU are awesome and can do anything you set your mind to. I know this.

Why are our mom’s so good at life? The world may never know.

Mama Pea July 22, 2010 at 12:49 pm

So happy to chat, my friend. I’ll remind you ANY TIME.

Brilliant mantra! It’s a shame that clever little be kind and please rewind can’t be used on movie rentals anymore.

Megan @ The Oatmeal Diaries July 22, 2010 at 2:32 pm

I always lovelovelove your posts. I have trouble trusting myself too and need reminders constantly… I like to post things around my room reminding me how amazing I am (that sounds suuuuper conceited and I realize that haha) and it always makes me a smile. P.S. I’m trying the mashed naner thing NOW :)

Laura July 22, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Eating is definitely NOT the number one thing my mum needs to remind me to do!!!! I LOVE your (justified) dinner idea;) xx

BroccoliHut July 22, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Ice cream for dinner? Yes, please.

sophia July 22, 2010 at 6:50 pm

Yes, I’ll definitely be pleased to assure you what a gorgeous, wonderful and talented being you are, Holly. :)

My mom nags at me to eat breakfast, and to eat less at night. I always disobey her. :(

jeri July 22, 2010 at 7:41 pm

man I love me some sweet potato fries. YAY so excited I won!!! :)

Rachael July 22, 2010 at 8:34 pm

I greatly enjoy your sense of humor and perspective, and methinks that anyone who can wordsmith, productively self-analyze, have fun in life and enjoy the bonds of their family ought to trust themselves. Completely.
My grandmother’s favorite thing to say to me translates to this: everything means something. Simple, grounding, and true. Those words find their way into my head whenever anxiety hits or I feel like I’m being stupid, unproductive, wasteful…tends to at least get me thinking in a different direction.

Diana @ frontyardfoodie July 22, 2010 at 9:53 pm

I eat banana soft serve for dinner a lot these days. I can’t seem to find an argument against it to be quite honest.

oh, and besides talents you’re super sexy so work it girl! Now you probably think I’m a creeper.

Maura July 23, 2010 at 8:30 am
