Catching A Break

Today was a picture perfect Friday.

How do I love Fridays like thee! Well, let me count the ways…

(1) Phenom oats.

1/3 cup oats
2/3 cup gingerbread chai tea
1/3 cup canned butternut squash
1 tsp. maple syrup + 1 tsp. coconut oil
cinnamon, allspice + nutmeg
2 tbsp. unsweetened shredded coconut
1 scoop DCD PB

(2) Learning how exactly how health insurance works as related to federal healthcare reform while eating raw almonds (dork, I know).

(3) Leaving work early and taking a 1/2 day…holllllaaaa!

(4) Speaking of holla, exchanging texts with your mom (who left for vacay in Florida today) that go like this:

Mama Everythingtarian: “I made it.  75 and sunny”
Me: “Bitch”
Mama Everythingtarian: “holla”

(5) Loading up on veggies with a ginormous junk salad containing all the following:

  • spinach
  • tomatoes
  • carrots
  • cucumbers
  • beets
  • raisins
  • broccoli salad
  • chickpeas
  • hard-boiled eggs
  • banana peppers
  • sunflower seeds
  • artichokes
  • cucumber yogurt dressing
  • Diet Coke

(6) Following up lunch with a kid-friendly snack (ignore my nail biting).

(7) Going grocery shopping and finally bringing ALMOND BUTTER back in my life!!!  I don’t even want to think of how long it’s been.

(8) Cleaning my apartment, cuddling in bed while reading a book, leisurely reading blogs in bed…

(9) Working it out with a 3/4 mile run to the gym, 60-minute yoga class with creeper teacher and a 3/4 mile run home.  It was my first workout in 4 days.  Twas’ glorious.

(10) Finding out the aforementioned^^^ yoga creeper teacher ^^^ is also an ordained monk.

(11) Coming home to a meal that was ready in 5 minutes flat – Black Bean and Sweet Potato Stuffed Acorn Squash!

(12) Taking a bath while reading a book.  Oh, the simple pleasures in life.

(13) Having the rest of the night to eat a mini yog mess for dessert, catch up on Glee, The Office and whatever else I want because I don’t have to work or do a dayum thang tonight!

That would be 13 good things on Friday the 13th…who says today can’t be lucky?

Have a great weekend, Holly!

Morgan @ Life After Bagels November 13, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Whoa Holly, your day sounds AMAZING, honestly I am jealous lady!

Madeline @ GreensAndJeans November 13, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Any day that ends with Glee and includes your mom saying “holla” has to be a great day.

Katie November 13, 2009 at 10:32 pm

ooo “junk salad” – I like that term. I’m stealing it. :-)

Also, I have been laying in be for almost an hour reading blogs and it’s glorious. Nothing like the anticipation of a weekend to ease your mind. Happy Friday!

(Oh, and thanks for the acorn squash tutorial – I loved seeing your step-by-step)

Your mom rules!

I think you got your fruit/veggie recommended servings covered for the week with your junk salad. Fantastic.

I agree, today was a groovy day. Sorry, Jason Voorhees, but you don’t dictate the mood of “Friday the 13th.”

Lynn @ The Actors Diet November 13, 2009 at 11:18 pm

bath and books = bliss. glad you had a nice day

Danica November 13, 2009 at 11:23 pm

So I’ve been looking for a good recipe to incorporate squash into oats – this looks awesome. I need to try it.

Fantastic Friday the 13th for sure :)

Jess November 13, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Wow, if I had your day, I’d want the 13th to be every day!! Sounds like you had a fab friday!
<3 jess

Maya November 13, 2009 at 11:43 pm

God I wish my mom texted. She is not technologically savvy. At least she knows how to use a computer well!
Plus even if we texted, my mom isn’t the kind of lady who’d like to be called bitch in jest. Mama Everythingtarian sounds bitchin’

sophia November 13, 2009 at 11:46 pm

gingerbread chai tea with butternut squash oats? Ooh lala!!!

Hmm. Today is Friday the 13th. No wonder. I’ve had horrible news today.

Mama Pea November 13, 2009 at 11:55 pm

You make me wish that someday my girls will text “bitch” to me. Now that is love.

Jenn November 14, 2009 at 12:00 am

LOVE this week’s episode of The Office. “Catch ya on the flippity flip! Baaaaaahh.”

Jenna November 14, 2009 at 1:08 am

that seems like a pretty great friday the 13th to me!

Tay November 14, 2009 at 2:14 am

OMG your mom is awesome. Simple as that.

Gab* November 14, 2009 at 6:23 am

I love reading about government policy as well!! I think this healthcare reform is really exciting for you guys!!

It was 95F here today at the beach but it was surprisingly nice. I think it was about 103F in the city though, not so nice!

Katie November 14, 2009 at 6:24 am

Looks like to me! My yoga class was crazy hard way over my head!

Um yea I’d say the same thing if it was my mom, but I doubt I’d get that response ;)

Taylor@Joy of Food November 14, 2009 at 6:39 am

I loved this post and yes Friday 13th doesn’t have to be unlucky. I think half the bad things that happen on this day is because people are tense and scared so accidents happen.

Emily (The Experimentarian) November 14, 2009 at 6:58 am

Yay for gingerbread chai in your oats!! Whoo hoo :) I am emailing you. xoxo

Justine November 14, 2009 at 7:38 am

What a great way to spend Fri. the 13th! Sounds so relaxing and fun. Sorta like my day :). O, I see the orange Zevia! Did you like it? I love all things orange flavored :)

Hope you’re having a good saturday!!! :D

clay November 14, 2009 at 12:14 pm

Dude, you are so right to be jealous of mama everythingtarian… South Florida is so nice right now i think i may break into song.

I AM ALL ABOUT THE GLEE! Have you seen the CD they just came out with? I dont even have a job and i had to spend the money. Also, i feel the need to thank you again. I think i have stumbled upone the best diet for me… the ‘everythingtarian’! Food issues be damned… if i can’t have pancakes then i dont see it happening for the long term

Alison November 14, 2009 at 2:07 pm

Sissy #1 November 14, 2009 at 4:51 pm

OMG! The text convo you had with mom was the EXACT one I had…I’m talkin word for word. haha I like how our first response to our mother’s safety was “bitch”

Sarah (Finding My Balance) November 14, 2009 at 4:53 pm

Michal November 15, 2009 at 7:37 am

Aw this post was cute! Your junk salad looks good too, thats usually how mine end up coming out. I just toss everything in a huge bowl and chow down.

Biz November 15, 2009 at 10:53 am

Love the texting between your Mom! :D

And I love Glee! The last episode was awesome!

Low November 15, 2009 at 11:12 am

jessica November 15, 2009 at 5:46 pm

Hols, I miss you ladyy!! Can we do a gchat/email sesh soon?! Holla at yo’ girllll!!

Mama everythingtarian is adorb. I lose it when my mom says slang words like “holla”, but I adore the fact that your mom uses it! But no worries, I just like giving Jeany a hard time….

And yessss ma’am! Almond butter is back in action! Nothing goes better with carob chips than the aforementioned JEM… Hahaha! Do it!

Remind me to make tea-infused oats over thanksgiving break! LOVE YOUUUUU!

April November 15, 2009 at 7:34 pm

I’ve only tried artichokes once at a restaurant and it kind of grossed me out!! I’m not sure why though.. something about the texture maybe? Were the ones in your salad raw?
