cleaning up and cleaning out.

Every few months it seems, I am in need of a cleanout.

First, my pantry. If TLC decided to do a TV spin-off called “Food Hoarders,” I think I’d qualify for the show. The things I found while cleaning out my cupboards this weekend include, but are not limited to: a mini pair of scissors, two Christmas tins, six types of tea, a 1-lb. bag of nutritional yeast, six jars of nut butter, eight baggies of unlabeled spices (I think I figured out what each of them is), four products I have yet to review on the blog and sticky pools of agave nectar.

Mind you, the picture above is post-cleanout.

And second, my body.

Let’s be clear, I’ve been taking these past two weeks of funemployment very seriously. Lunch dates with friends? Check! Attending all happy hour celebrations I am invited to? Check! A birthday party boating on the lake? Check! A nachos competition between the manfriend and I? Check! If you can’t read between those alcohol-laden lines, then let me tell you that it means I’ve been exercising minimally and imbibing beer (and nachos) to the extreme.

And so the time has come…

Hello Project Cleanout, goodbye fun chub!

It all starts with buckwheat groats, dried berries, lemon and hemp seeds!

Unfortunately, we’re not talking that kind of hemp, but we are talking about hulled hemp seeds, an Omega-3 and -6 rich seed that is not to be overlooked. While some complain the flavor can be a bit gritty, I’ve found when paired with the right ingredients, it’s delightfully creamy and nutty. Plus, it’s a complete protein – containing all nine essential amino acids – and provides a protein boost.

So let’s make this recipe do double duty for us, mmmkay?

This buckwheat granola will rid us of those pesky bulk items hibernating in our cupboards and (hopefully) slim our waists at the same time. Tomorrow morning, I plan on eating it a bowl of it topped with strawberries and a hefty dose of almond milk, although if you subbed the almond milk for Greek yogurt, I wouldn’t judge you for that. It’d be goooood.

Tomorrow, I am also going to be back at you again with another Project Cleanout recipe.

I may even shoot for a posting a recipe or concoction every day this week!

Do you think you can handle a blog post a day from me this week? More importantly, do you think I handle a blog post a day from me this week? Now that happy hours are off the table for awhile, I think the answer is yes.

My week just cleared up significantly.

Berry Cardamom Buckwheat Granola
adapted from Apple Mango Coconut Buckwheat Granola
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 45 to 50 minutes

2 cups raw buckwheat groats
1 cup dried mixed berries
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup hulled hemp seeds
1 t vanilla extract
1/2 t ground cardamom
1/2 t salt
zest of 1 lemon
1/2 cup brown rice syrup, agave nectar or honey

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.

In a large mixing bowl, toss groats, berries, oats, hemp seeds, extract and spices. Add brown rice syrup, and stir ensuring mixture is well-coated. Pour onto a greased baking sheet and press into an even layer. Bake for 45-50 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes until granola is light golden brown.

Store in an airtight container or immediately devour the entire batch…it’s your call.

Makes 4 cups

So brave showing the inner most workings of a food blogger…the pantry. :)

I agree, you’re a brave girl! My nut butter collection is shameful… so many jars… tsk, tsk. Good for you on cleaning up… we could all learn a thing or two from you. ;) The granola looks fantastic too, but sadly, I cannot be trusted around such things. ;)

Good for you, I so need to clean out my pantry!

Every time I see buckwheat granola I always think how delicious it looks! The texture kills me. I don’t think I’ve ever even bought this grain though. I need to though just to make this granola. Love!

I love a good clean-out and I love a good granola. I wish my pantry looked like yours, but sadly, it’s just filled with cracker crumbs and a few dwindling jars or raisins, almonds, and corn meal. Can you please make something with those ingredients? Cracker crumbs included?

Hmmm, might I assume that by looking at your cupboard that you will be going to the Healthy Living Summit?? Because I would love to meet you! :-)

Oh my that looks delicious! I’m going to have to try that one out!

I REALLY need to do something similar. I have so.many.dang.grains in my cupboard!

I’m the same way–I periodically clean out my ridiculously stuffed pantry, and discover things I had completely forgotten about. Who knew a single girl like me could have four different kinds of rice in her cabinet?!
This granola looks fab–I don’t eat hemp seeds often enough, so definitely bookmarking this one!

Ok, I got really confused/excited when I saw those flashing symbols around the hemp seeds in that picture up there (please tell me it’s supposed to be like that & not my computer bugging out, haha). Check you out, adding some animation to the photos — blogger pioneering! In other news, that granola looks amazing. That’s all :)

I’ve never thought of making buckwheat granola but that looks amazing!!! I’ve been thinking about making granola lately and promise I will be adapting this recipe :) Thanks lady!! I am in need of a fun chub food cleanse too… what is it about our man friends that make us loose ourselves in nacho eating contests and entirely too much foodie fun? Just kidding… it doesn’t take much for me to give into those :)

I did a ‘cleaning party’ in my pantry just a couple days ago. It is amazing how much stuff can a single girl have! It seems that I am living with a whole (imaginery) family or at least shop having this thought in mind. Thanks for a recipe, I was thinking about trying buckwheat granola :)

I love the expression “fun chub”. I take my fun time seriously and spare no margarita or burrito! This granola looks super fabulous, just like the lady who made it (who for the record- I have never seen with any chub whatsoever).

So healthy! Looks good! I’m glad you’ve been out there living your life- it’s just as important as cutting back every once and a while. :)

Joelle (on a pink typewriter) June 26, 2012 at 7:33 pm

Gaaaah, I need this too! Break-ups apparently equal brownies, booz, and fro-yo to me, and my body would probably appreciate if I sit out the new 50 happy hours. ;)

“can you handle a blog post a day…”
my dear, do you even have to ask? with delicious recipes and lovely ramblings, the answer is yes. always yes.

Diana @ frontyardfoodie June 27, 2012 at 8:54 am

I think I need a bigger spice cabinet…..I have cleaned out every nook and cranny in my house (pregnancy nesting can do that to you) but no matter how I consolidate and redefine essentials, I still have an overflowing spice cabinet!
