Cool Booty Curry

You guys are cool.

Like, way cool.

I mean, just go and read all the comments from my last post. I promise if you do, you’ll realize the only thing that defines who you are is YOU – not your relationship status, age, job, how much money you have or any of those trivial, unimportant details. That’s cool, if you ask me. Because let’s be real – single or not – we all need that reminder sometimes.

For all your lovely comment, I’d like to share me treasure with ya…

The lovely people over at Pirate Brands offered to send me free samples of this crunchy, puffed snack to review for the blog and accomplished their mission with style and panache.

Seriously, how cute is this?

Anyways, I love a good snack just as much as the next gal. So, when I opened my treasure chest of foodie love to find these six unique flavors, needless to say aye knew I’d be hooked.

  • Sour Cream & Onion
  • Aged White Cheddar
  • New York Pizza
  • Veggie
  • Barbeque
  • Sea Salt & Vinegar

These bootylicious bags (all-natural, gluten-free and NO trans fats) are a great grab + go snack option or yummy addition to a good ol’ brown bag lunch. At roughly 130 calories, they aren’t going to fill your belly up but sure make for some fun eating.

After spending my week taste testing the waters, I can officially reveal to you my Pirate’s Booty flavor ranking, starting with my #1 favorite…

My name is Holly; I live in Wisconsin; and I love cheese.

The aged cheddar flavor, which actually uses real Wisconsin cheese, was hands down my fave. It had the perfect hint of cheesiness to go with the light crunch of this puffed rice snack.

Here’s how the rest of ’em stacked up…

  1. Aged White Cheddar
  2. Barbeque
  3. Sour Cream & Onion
  4. New York Pizza
  5. Veggie
  6. Sea Salt & Vinegar

Sadly, my least favorite was the flavor I made Brett taste test with me for the blog…

The smile was pre-taste, FYI.

For some reason, the Sea Salt & Vinegar lacked a lot of flavor. The salt wasn’t strong enough and neither was the vinegar. In Brett’s words, “It kinda tastes like cardboard.”

I agreed.

I am making it up to him by cooking Caramelized Onion & Heirloom Tomato Flatbread on Monday. I think that should take care of any lingering residual cardboard flavor.

Tonight, I finally whipped up something I’ve been meaning to make all week: Red Curry in a Hurry.

So easy, you’ll scoff at the fact I’m even touting this as a recipe.

  • 1 T canola oil
  • 1 T minced garlic
  • 1 medium zucchini, sliced
  • 1 medium yellow zucchini, sliced
  • 1 (8-oz.) package tempeh, crumbled
  • 1 (14-oz.) can coconut milk
  • 2 T red curry paste
  • 1 small packet NuNaturals Stevia
  • soy sauce
  • ground ginger
  • salt + pepper, to taste

Saute the zucchini in canola oil + garlic over medium heat. Add the tempeh, coconut milk, red curry paste, stevia, a couple shakes of soy sauce + ground ginger and salt + pepper, to taste. Mix well.

Go to Target and buy this awesome rice packet from Archer Farms

Heat it in the microwave for a minute.

Pile rice high in a bowl, add your red curry mix, make a POM + sparkling water mocktail and devour…

When your finished, you should probably eat two of Madeline’s cookies.

You know, to settle your stomach.

Then, you should probably do your 4-day old dishes, clean your apartment, pack a suitcase, write a recommendation letter and squeeze in a workout before you pick up and leave for the weekend.

Where to, you ask?

I’ll give you three clues: Gandhi Mahal, Haute Dish & the home of Wire-Haired Griffons.

You’re cool…you figure it out.

Mmmm…I used to have a mom in my class last year that brought me Pirates Booty on the regular. The caramel kind was my fave – I could never stop once the bag was open. I miss it.

Also, Mr. Brett looks good – has he lost weight?!

rebecca lustig August 26, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Erica August 26, 2010 at 7:26 pm

I TOTALLY thought the sea salt and vinegar was going to be our favorite and we were disappointed ! The cheddar is the best. I really liked the pizza too :) And I already bought a big bag of the cheddar. Beautiful din din…I’ve never made curry. Have fun on your trip!

Lauren August 26, 2010 at 7:39 pm

Hmmm, note to self, don’t buy the sea salt and vinegar. GOod thing you told me because that would have been my first choice. I’m interested to see what you think of the others now.

HOLY cow that dinner looks awesome! I think I have every ingredient for this too (minus the rice). Looks like a trip to Target is needed!

Madeline - Greens and Jeans August 26, 2010 at 11:19 pm

Curry + cookies = perfection. Also, is Brett wearing a pink shirt with a green tie? If yes, please high five him for me.

sophia August 27, 2010 at 1:07 am

I love Pirates Booty. I always stole a huge handful at the Whole Foods sample corner. I’ve only gotten to try the Aged cheddar cheese though.

Kacy August 27, 2010 at 7:23 am

MMm, I heart Pirate’s Boot. The aged ched flave reminds me of my beloved puffed cheetohs. Sad to hear about the S&V flavor nothing being great – I have a profound love for all things vinegar.

Have a good weekend doll!

Garet August 27, 2010 at 8:27 am

I. am. trying. that curry this weekend. It looks amazing.

Also, doesn’t Brett look adorable in his little pink shirt?

Angharad August 27, 2010 at 8:58 am

Mr Brett is looking trim and dapper! Say hello from me please :)

Umm I KNOW! I KNOW! I KNOW! But it would be wrong for me to give it away right? Right. Ok. Fine.

Ok, that is totally a recipe to me. And it looks awesome! :)

Lindsey @ Foodie on the Rocks August 27, 2010 at 9:28 am

Dang, just caught up on your last post and I loved it! I am/was totally in the same spot (JUST met someone, pretty swizeet), but 2 weeks ago, I was single, 26, and my little brother just got married. Talk about a sob fest! NOT!! People didn’t ge the fact that I revel in my independence, love every moment of my life and my ability to travel and experience things with wild abandon that only a single 26 year old can do! Amen Holly!!

Cassie August 27, 2010 at 10:02 am

Bahaha! That has got to be THE BEST packaging I’ve ever seen!

Brett August 27, 2010 at 10:19 am

Thanks for all of the nice comments everyone! Garet, the shirt was peach. However, I do have a pink one that I might just have to bust out next week!

Kailey (SnackFace) August 27, 2010 at 10:31 am

Megan (Braise the Roof) August 27, 2010 at 11:09 am

But how was the pizza flavor, I ask you?? I was so excited to see it on your post yesterday- the suspense is killing me! That was an awesome blogger review product- I’m very jealous. PS, (shameless self-promotion here, beware) I’m having a product review and giveaway over on my blog early next week- definitely stop by! :)

Have fun on your getaway!

Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) August 27, 2010 at 12:03 pm

I love your recipes, they’re always so accessible and simple with a strong focus on whole, real, fresh ingredients. Where does one find curry paste? Do I just need to squint a bit harder when scanning the spice aisle at the grocery store?

Also, regarding your weekend plans…Minneapolis?

Eden August 27, 2010 at 2:44 pm

I really think I was an Indian in my past life. I love all curries! I find using cumin and turmeric really help enhance curries (in case someone can’t find curry paste, I know even as a chef its not easy to find). I always like to finish my curries of with a little hint of lime juice. Sounds weird but it really brightens it up.

Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) August 27, 2010 at 4:32 pm

I’ve been told that the cheddar flavored pirate’s booty is incredibly addicting. I think I’ll need to test that theory out sometime. :D

I love your attitude, by the way. And thanks for the reminder that the only things that truly define us is not found in money, jobs or even being single or not. Keep up the awesome attitude, Holly! :D

Joshua Meyers August 27, 2010 at 8:28 pm

I really want that pirate chest. Brett, tells me that you’re going to make us your flat bread pizza, I can’t wait! Luv you!

Mimi (Damn the Freshman 15) August 28, 2010 at 1:49 am

My dad and stepmom are addicted to Pirate’s Booty. It’s kind of hilarious. They get the dog to do tricks for it. My curry in a hurry always involves a curry sauce from Thai Kitchen. I love their stuff!

Erika August 29, 2010 at 11:05 am

I’m giving you a fair warning about that Pizza flavor right now… your hand will be hitting the bottom of the bag faster than you can get out an “Ayyyyye Matey!”

amanda August 29, 2010 at 2:12 pm

i am OBSESSED with the treasure chest filled with pirate booty. it doesn’t get much better than package like that.

Diana @ frontyardfoodie August 29, 2010 at 5:54 pm

Funny you don’t like sea salt/vinegar flavor because that is my all time favorite of any chip!
