Counting Suge Monster

Hey friends! Thanks for watching the randomness that is my latest VLOG!

Two things:

  • Some of you mentioned I called it a “vee-log” instead of a “vlog” (rhymes with blog).  Yeah, that’s how I roll.
  • I need more VLOG ideas! What do you want to see more of?  Less of?  Leave me a comment, and let me know!

Anyways…this morning started with a delectable, filling brekkie.  I sauteed a huge handful of spinach in a smidge of EVOO + garlic, then added two eggs and a thawed Sunshine breakfast patty.  With two pieces of sprouted Ezekiel bread with a smidge of buttah, this was the perfect way to start the day…

Total: 28 grams of protein, 24 grams of healthy fat and roughly 600 calories.  Love it.

Unfortunately, lunch ended up being about 5 hours later, which left me ravenous waiting for my Chipotle bowl of love.  Sooo…I started lunch off with five of these.  Yes, five Valentine heart York Peppermint Patties.  No shame.

I had packed a lunch, but when my coworkers said they were making a Chipotle run, I couldn’t say no.  It just wouldn’t be right, even if it was my 2nd Chipotle bowl of the week.  I got my usual veggie burrito bol, which contains:

cilantro rice
black beans
fajita veggies
mild salsa (aka tomatoes)
lettuce
extra, extra guac

That’s 300 calories of chocolate + 600 calories of Chipotle right thurre.

You know me, usually I don’t count calories. But, for some reason, I am doing it on this post.  Just go with it.

Call me Suge Knight, because I downed the suge (ahem, candy) today. I LOVE candy. I do.  It stretches all the way back to being a kid, where I would attempt to give up candy for Lent every year.  I don’t think I ever made it.  After lunch, I had six of these Dove caramel chocolates…

That’s another two-hundo in kcals.

Even though I usually don’t count calories, I do think once in awhile it isn’t a bad thing.  It is a great way to check-in and make sure your serving sizes are correct, you’re eating the right amount and keeping everything balanced. Clearly, today was obvs not the best day to count for me (hello chocolate!), but whatevs.

After work, I headed off to a stretch-tastic 75-minute Power Yoga class.  I needed it so badly, and I am so glad I went. When I arrived home, I ate dinner (which was originally supposed to be my lunch)…

Veggie Spaghetti (400 kcals)

And my new fave Choco Apple Berry Snack (200 calories)…

1 cup applesauce
1/2 cup frozen strawbs
1 tbsp. carob chips
1 tbsp. shredded coconut

Seriously.  Try this now.  It’s delicious.

Total = 2100 calories

Exercise = – 200 calories

Net = 1900 calories

Not too shabby, considering all the sugar I ate today.

Alrighty kiddos, it’s Friday night, and I am laying in bed watching the Olympic opening ceremonies.  Usually, this part doesn’t excite me.  However, it’s been a long week, my bed is ridiculously comfortable and Nelly Furtado is performing.

Mama + Daddy Everythingtarian are also coming to visit tomorrow!  Woowoo!

What would YOU like to see in my next VLOG? Share.

How do you feel about counting calories? I couldn’t do it everyday because I would go insane, but every once in awhile, I like to check in by counting them up!

I find myself counting on days when I think “woh that must have been a lot” or “I really didn’t do too well fueling today” and no matter what it usually works out to the right amount which makes me feel good

Fashion show! WIth 80s music!

Random? Maybe… but you kind of remind me of Carrie and it just fits :)

Oh, and haven’t you heard… chocolate cals don’t count!!

Leah Zeringue February 12, 2010 at 8:30 pm

I love all of your vee-logs…no matter if they are actually about anything haha, you are just hilarious….and i love that you eat real food, in real portions…its so refreshing to see!

Katharina February 12, 2010 at 8:34 pm

I don’t count my calories but sometimes I do think in terms of servings just to make sure I am getting enough. I do it to make sure I’m getting enough because I tend to lose weight quickly and that is something I really don’t want. I have had lots of chocolate today as well.. everyday lol. I feel like my skin is suffering because of it :\ that’s the only downside. I could use some yoga right now–I feel so tense! Or maybe I just need a hot guy to massage my neck and back lol. I hope your weekend is awesome!!!

AND for your next Vlog I think you should film the process of making a yog-mess lol.

Katharina February 12, 2010 at 8:35 pm

p.s. I’m with the lovely lady on the fashion show idea!!!

katie February 12, 2010 at 8:49 pm

i agree-its fun to count every once in a while! i have to be careful not to OBSESS!! LOVE your protein packed breakfast!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is February 12, 2010 at 8:51 pm

I bought some applesauce tonight so I can try that amazing treat. I’m against counting calories, but I have done it for shows. I think if it can be done without obsession, it’s fine.

Molly February 12, 2010 at 8:57 pm

I never really count calories, but sometimes I do to make sure I get enough. I aim for 3500 a day, and sometimes when I find myself falling short, my runs start to suck!

April February 12, 2010 at 9:15 pm

Ooo I’m kind of glad you counted calories today.. I like to see how much other people eat! 1900 net is not shabby at all, not shabby at all!!

I’ve started up again to make sure I eat enough. I think as long as counting doesn’t make you restrictive then it’s fine!

Madeline - Greens and Jeans February 12, 2010 at 9:34 pm

Have fun with you padres (or, the pods as I call mine)! I have to agree with the fashion show idea… Maybe we can have a vlog walk off?

mamma everythingtarian February 12, 2010 at 9:49 pm

would love to see the interaction between you and your witty mama :)

Tiffany February 12, 2010 at 10:53 pm

I track what I eat six days a wk and the other day I just dont care. I don’t go buckwild or anything but need a break from tracking every single item. Personally for me, that and blogging about my meals keeps myself accountable. On a normal day it is 1900-2000 cals.

Have fun with the parentals!

vera February 13, 2010 at 12:03 am

I used to count my calories, but now I kinda approximate, just to make sure i’m not going too crazy ahah! Although i still overindulge all.the.time.

I fully support calorie counting, either on an occasional basis or more seriously if someone needs to lose weight. Obviously nothing in extreme is good, but just “checking in” the way you did today is awesome. Knowledge is power, at least that’s how I see it.
And I love, love all of your eats today. Really. I love how they are healthy, yet somewhat indulgent, and just TASTY looking :)

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) February 13, 2010 at 1:18 am

five Valentine heart York Peppermint Patties= awesome! i didnt know they made those!
seriously girl, i love candy and choc too. and i eat it. and i also eat tons of brock and raw veggies. it all works out. :)

happy vday honey!

Michal February 13, 2010 at 7:54 am

Yay for double chipotle loving :) I dont count calories often, but i will once in a while to make sure im on track. I do keep a food journal where I write down a loose list of what im eating.

Uncle Tommie Timbertoes February 13, 2010 at 7:58 am

Why don’t you vlog us around all your favorite spots in Madtown.

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) February 13, 2010 at 8:00 am

Ahh, I LOVE candy. And cookies. I ate 1/2 sleeve of thin mints yesterday in preparation for my evening run :-)

Maya February 13, 2010 at 8:14 am

Every once in a while I count calories just to give myself a ballpark figure. I think it’s hard to ever know exactly how many you eat unless you measure every single food down to the ounce and that would be a whole hot mess of craziness. But it’s good to make sure everything is in check once in a while. Mmmm I am craving burrito bowl now, maybe I’ll make mky own mock version for dinner!

Jordan February 13, 2010 at 8:15 am

For the past four months or so I’ve been counting calories obsessively. It’s a problem of mine and it really causes me to restrict and freak out if I go over a certain “limit” I’ve set for myself [usually around 1200 calories…yeah, not great.] So very recently I’ve just stopped. I need to gain a little weight and counting calories only encourages my restrictive nature, so I’m just trying not to count right now..do the whole intuitive eating thing. Though yesterday, out of curiosity, I totaled up my calories for the day and realized that I’m not eating much more than I was before. :\ Time to step it up, I guess!

Gina February 13, 2010 at 8:20 am

OK, I’m pretty sure that I am the last person alive on the planet that has never been to a Chipotle. When I lived in Brooklyn Heights, my roommate went there pretty much daily (she was from Texas) and it was literally right down the street from us. Clearly, an epic fail on my part. :-P
I agree with you, as long as it doesn’t become obsessive or damaging, I think calorie counting is a great way to check in to how you’re fueling yourself, and also can be a useful tool in weight loss.

Kristie February 13, 2010 at 9:15 am

So, in my head I have always thought it was vee-log so I’m glad you included the “rhymes with blog” tip for those of us who are… slower ;) Really the only times I count calories are on long run days, or if I have a couple days in a row where I eat and eat and never seem to feel full. 3 big meals a day are the way to go for me – snacky days never leave me feeling satisfied!

Chelsea @ (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) February 13, 2010 at 9:35 am

I’m with you on counting calories. I can’t do it everyday because it’s mentally all-consuming and frustrating. However, as you said, once in a while it’s not bad to check in and see what you’re averaging. It’s also worth remember that each day is different, some days you consume more…some days less. As long as I fit in between 1800-2000, I don’t freak out.

LOVE the spinach scramble!

Have fun with the folks this weekend! Love you, lady!

Jenn February 13, 2010 at 9:59 am

I’m not huge on the Olympics, but it was cool seeing all our homegrown talent up there!

Furtado went to highschool with me, and in September I went to Steve Nash’s convocation (honourary PhD) at my university. Small world!

Jenny February 13, 2010 at 10:26 am

dood – totes do a cooking tutorial, Rachel Ray style (‘cept you’ll be much more tolerable to watch). Who knows, maybe it’ll be your claim to fame!

samantha February 13, 2010 at 11:37 am

i like counting calories but find it laborious to keep up with it all the time… but sometimes i do it to make sure i’m eating enough/not too much.

also i did NOT like nelly’s dress during the olympics! and howww did she walk in those heels?!

Traci February 13, 2010 at 11:40 am

Yay for Power Yoga! Sound like you had a great class. Like we always say…It’s never a bad idea to show up for yoga :).

Counting Calories: Nope. don’t do it. I did years ago, and I think when someone is trying to loose weight it’s ok. But I say just eat healthy, real food, add it some treats (love love love my ice cream), move your body and all will be good. :)

The Brunette February 13, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Personally, countin calories leave me out of touch with hunger cues. I just do not get as full from 200 calories of bagel as I do from 200 calories of veggie omelet, you know? That said, doing it once in a while out of curiosity I probably a great idea.

Also, I am uncontrolable around candy. And I don’t just do the fancy, dark chocolate stuff that so many bloggers love. It’s great, don’t get me wrong (uh, it’s CHOCOLATE), but I’ll take a piece (or 4) of dove or a Milky Way over the expensive stuff probably 80 percent of the time. Love that you’re repping the non-fancy stuff on your blog!

Lauren February 13, 2010 at 4:35 pm

I just had the same chipotle bowl of love. It was mindnumbing!

I only count calories on the days when I know I ate 100% perfect, which happens probably once every 5 years. Haha, it’s just too much work. Why would I want to add another task in my life that would only make me feel bad? I say, unless you are really really trying to loose some weight, calorie counting will only make you miserable. We are way too hard on ourselves already, so adding one more form of measurement will only make you crazy.

I think it’s good to know a general number to aim for everyday, but the details aren’t important, so long as you get in all of the important stuff! :)

KathyR February 13, 2010 at 5:20 pm

Could you hold that chocolate mint patty a little closer to the screen? Closer. Clloosser.

Darn. Guess I have to get my own.

And I have counted calories in the past, but I am not doing it now. Like you & others said, it’s too crazy-making for me.

Jessica February 13, 2010 at 5:57 pm

First of all, thanks for the shout out in the last post!! That thang looked bombbb!!! Second of all, i WILL be watching the vlog (i pronounce in vee-log too!!!!) asap, but can’t now since i have to start working on this project in like, two mins once my econ friendzzz get here!
Thirdly, that choco berry snack looks SOOO amaze! like, i need it in my life right noww. And that pasta dish too! Tomatoes + chickpeas are always a divine pair!!

OKAY, LOVE YOU!!
Hope you have a fab sat night in store! i’ll be drankin’ and dancin’ ;)

Katie February 13, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I’ve only been to Chipotle once! Sad but true. And what is Valentine’s day(week/month) for if not chocolate? I wholly support your consumption.

I used to try plugging my calories into one of those food calculators when I was in, like, high school (BLAGH) but now I just try to roll with how I’m feeling. I don’t know if I’d want to know what my morning oatmeal tallies up to!

Hope you’re having a fabulous weekend, H!

Lynn @ The Actors Diet February 13, 2010 at 8:26 pm

peppermint patties remind me of the olympics – they used to have commercials when i was a kid, saying “you get a silver!” and now that the olympics are on, and you posted about them, I REALLY WANT ONE!!!

Susan February 15, 2010 at 6:48 pm

I count calories on and off. Usually for 2-3 days at a time, then I forget about it for a week. I like checking in too. I find I snack less when I count calories because I’m just like “UGH, I do not want to measure out this handful of cereal then log .183 of a serving later.” Oddly, it works!
