Delicious Discipline

Buenas noches mis amigos bellos!

That would be, “Good evening my beautiful friends!” en espanol. And no, I am not trying to suck up to you all because of my increasing absenteeism in blogland.  There’s no need to apologize for that, because the truth is: life gets busy.

And for the next couple weeks, I have a feeling it is only going to get busier.

Why you ask?

  1. Half-marathon training (this girl is DETERMINED to make it under 1:50!)
  2. Nicer weather (whenever it’s nice outside, Mama Everythingtarian’s voice haunts me saying, “It’s too nice to be inside!” which she said to us all the time growing up)

That last one may seem odd, but here’s the scoop:

I am not disciplined.

Yes, I maintain a job, working out, a blog, mundane life things, family and friendship.  I know that.  But per this post, I know that if I want to pursue my goals and get what I deserve, I need to work for it.  So, I am going to be devoting more time to cultivating a freelance writing career (holler if you know of anyone who wants a really cool food/health/travel/spiritual/ramble about anything writer!), among other projects. That means more article writing and a little less blog writing.  I’ve been feeling a little uninspired blog-wise lately, so I think a little break will also help me recharge the batteries.

Anyways, back to the food.  Because I ate food today.  And it was good.

Starting out with Classic Banana Oats

1/2 cup oats
1 cup water
1 egg (whisked in)
1 sliced naner
vanilla stevia drops
drizzle of maple syrup
NUTTZO (!!!)

This mixed nut butter = love. It’s sweet and yet, has no sugar.  I can’t figure it out.  And that’s okay.  I will just eat it instead.  I’m already down 1/4 of the jar.

For the past couple weeks, I have been enjoying this morning cocktail…

If I do get sick (which is rarely), it tends to happen when the seasons change (i.e. now).  Since it has gone from about 15 degrees to 50 in a matter of weeks, I am just covering my bases to prevent anything from dragging me down. A lil’ Emergen-C and tea never hurt nobody.

More vitamin C.

I could have made a joke about the artist formerly known as Vitamin C, but that would have been lame. Trust me, I was tempted.

Lunch was inspired by my favorite broccoli lover and her divine recipe for Peanut Sesame Hummus!  I merely added some carrots + roasted kabocha squash to round out this snacky meal.

Snackage came in the form of plain yogurt + Kashi Toasted Berry Crumble + 1 tbsp. carob chips.  Has anyone else tried this new Kashi flavor?  It is really good.  In fact, I had 3 bowls of it for dinner last night.

After work, I grabbed a couple handfuls of popcorn + two mini Reese’s eggs and met up with my fellow Madison bloggie Kristie for a good 5-mile run.  Our tempo run went (roughly) a lil’ something like this…

  • Mile 1: 10:19
  • Mile 2: 9:35
  • Mile 3: 9:38
  • Mile 4: 9:47
  • Mile 5: 10:00

Kristie’s Garmin was clearly more accurate, but I forgot to write down the numbers :).

When I got home, I obvs wanted something fast and good.  TWSS. Sorry for that – it’s been too long.  In about 10 minutes, I sauteed two small zucchini in coconut oil, toasted some Ezekiel bread and spread on cilantro pesto + cheese and cooked some crab cake bites. Delicious.

By the way, I used my Mrs. Dash “Fiesta Lime” spice I was sent in January on the zucchini – it was delicious!  Citrus with a kick!

Now, I am munching on a VeggieGirl blondie with a smidge of Nuttzo for dessert.  Ummm…how is it 8:25pm already, and where has my night gone?  I’m off to shower, do some dishes, crawl in bed, do some writing and catch up on last night’s LOST. Only NINE episodes left.  Sad.

Are you the type of person who always gets sick or never gets sick? I’ve never thrown up, gotten strep throat or an ear infection.  My body is like Tony Stark’s – iron.  Watch me get sick tomorrow though just for saying this.

What is the most exciting thing to happen to you recently? I LOVE hearing happy, positive things!

Mara @ What's For Dinner? March 10, 2010 at 8:45 pm

Nutzzo? VeggieGIrl blondie? TOGETHER?! Color me jealous…

Lisa March 10, 2010 at 8:45 pm

Cilantro pesto sounds so good. Right up my alley!

To answer your question, the boyfriend finally found a job! Best thing thats been happening for me!

Showty March 10, 2010 at 8:47 pm

mmmmm…your food looks good! I get sick everytime the seasons change! Grrr…

Best thing to happen to me recently was that I beat my formerly best 5k time (26:52) on Saturday and logged 25:21! That was also good enough to nab second place in my age group! (it was a small race, but there were 15 in my group!)

Heather March 10, 2010 at 8:54 pm

Good luck with the half marathon training AND finding a freelance writing gig! You’re awesome, so I have faith that you will conquer both.

I don’t get sick often; I used to get bronchitis once a year when I was eating dairy, but since I cut that out, never! I do get a bad cold once a year or so, but I think it’s usually my body’s way of telling me to SLOW THINGS DOWN. I thought I was sick yesterday but today I think it’s just allergies screwing with me.

Best thing to happen to me recently: I got an A on a paper I worked super hard on.

Katharina March 10, 2010 at 9:01 pm

Ooo that Nutzo looks sooo good! And the peanut sesame hummus–I’m going to have to mark that recipe down!!!

1. I don’t usually get sick, and I’ve been starting my days with Emergen-C as well :D

2. I was in a fashion show this past weekend!!! IT WAS AMAZING!! The venue was PACKED, and there were no seats so everyone was crowded up to the stage like a concert. I felt like I was walking out into a sea of peoplee!!

Love you girl XOXO

Evan Thomas March 10, 2010 at 9:02 pm

I’m a little sick 24/7. But in that regard, I never get more sick, so it’s good.
My dad took me out to dinner! That brightened my day :-)
Isn’t nuttzo nutz to have no added sugar?
And you’ll rock the half!

Matt March 10, 2010 at 9:04 pm

NUTTZO IS GOOD! I am rationingmy jar because I am too cheap to buy more!

Jess March 10, 2010 at 9:04 pm

Life is SO busy! You are totally going to get a sub 1:50 half marathon!
<3 jess

Danielle March 10, 2010 at 9:06 pm

And here she is! Yay, so happy for you for pursuing your dreams. That’s amazing, you’re amazing, and I see (yes, you heard that right) many amazing things in your future :) No answers to the preguntas tonight but thats because I had a rather mediocre week. Keep eatin’ yum and stayin’ healthy!

katie March 10, 2010 at 9:09 pm

i MUST try that PB!! oh my goshhhhh! nuttzo looks sooo good!!!
GREAT job w. the run girl!
love yo dinner!

ellen eats beets March 10, 2010 at 9:17 pm

I tend not to get sick, but I am always sooooo scared I’m going to when people around me are sick. It’s weird, whatever I’m used to it. Just like you, I pump up with Vitamin C and tea! I neeeeed to make those blondies you posted, they looked to die for!

Kristie March 10, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Hehe. So those official stats: 10:18, 9:36, 9:41, 9:36, 9:40 (although that last mile is a guess due to the unplanned stop incident). I ended up giving in to quick eats too… Edo Japanese Restaurant, I love thee :)

Andrea@WellnessNotes March 10, 2010 at 10:02 pm

Okay, if you want to hear happy, positive things, you shouldn’t have asked question #1… J/k, sort of! We had to take the toddler to the doctor this afternoon because after being sick for almost a week and having a fever ever day, we noticed that he was bleeding out of his ear. This morning, sick myself and sleep-deprived from being up with him most of the night, I thought he had simply scratched himself. But no, he was actually bleeding out of his ear… Yup. Feel like a pretty bad mommy right now. No, this story is not uplifting. Sorry. And yes, since having kids, 18 years now, I have been sick a lot… Maybe I should get more serious about the Vitamin C…

But I can’t end this comment all negative. So here is something positive: I made some really good broccoli cheese soup for dinner! :) And I had a bit too much wine with dinner…. ;)

I’m sending you really good vibes for the freelance writing jobs! And the travel show that I know is out there… Just remember that I’ve always believed in you when you are rich and famous!!! :)

Katie March 10, 2010 at 10:04 pm

I never get sick, either. I’ve never had the flu…and people always think that’s weird. I think being around snot nosed kids all the time boosts my immune system.

Happy thing…I got free coffee for the 5th day in a row and it made me beam! :-)

Ashley March 10, 2010 at 10:15 pm

That’s so rockin you’re training for a half marathon! Maybe one day I’LL get the discipline to do that! Yea I have been making it a point to stay outdoors as much as humanly possible in this amazing sunny weather! Sunshine just puts everyone in a better mood. That new Kashi cereal is off tha chain! I’ve been putting it on yogurt and cottage cheese ever since I bought it. YUM! Wow – you have never thrown up?! That’s insane! You are a lucky girl! I have never had a sore throat or ear infection either. I very rarely get sick, but about once a year (just like you said – when the seasons change) I’m worthless for about a week with flu. Ooooh the most exciting thing coming up for me is heading to Atlanta to see Spring Awakening with my girl…should be a great time!

Katie @ Health for the Whole Self March 10, 2010 at 10:18 pm

I often get a “little sick” but not “full-blown sick,” if that makes any sense.

The most exciting thing that happened to me recently is I ran my personal distance record – 6.8 miles!!! I’m training for a 10-mile race, and running farther than I’ve ever gone before makes me feel so strong and motivated! :)

Lo March 10, 2010 at 10:28 pm

I tend to get a cold and or, run down if I work to much and don’t rest…but I havent had the flu in years or strep even…however this year I lost my voice twice. HMMMM. And exciting? If moving next Monday is exciting then YES and mama nut is helping me :) BIG SMILE!!! oh and I get to see DJ tomorrow…thats just exciting in a lame way :)

i love u and I WANT NUTTZO ahora mi amiga bonita!

Eliza March 10, 2010 at 10:36 pm

those oats look so delicious!! Yum that nutzo nut butter, gah i must get that!!

Madeline - Greens and Jeans March 10, 2010 at 10:58 pm

I used to ALWAYS get sick. I was that kid in the dorms who picked up whatever everyone else had, but recently I have been on a “sick free roll” (I am knocking on wood like craaaaazy). Sometimes breaks need to happen. Although, know that I will MISSSS YOU and you better keep our play date in May penciled in!

Sarah @ THE FOODIE DIARIES March 10, 2010 at 11:16 pm

amen, hermana, for getting tu vida and yo writing on. i’m in the same boat, but this you know. something you dont know? te quiero muchisimooooo. fine, maybe you know that.

Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete March 10, 2010 at 11:37 pm

I get sick sometimes, but it used to be more often when I lived at home. I think it was the stress! I just got caught up on your posts, and I have to tell you that I LOVE SMART COACH! I have been using it for over a year, and there is just no comparison to how personalized it is! I’m glad you are on board! Good luck with your training!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is March 11, 2010 at 5:31 am

I usually only get sick maybe once a year, and it’s just some sort of cold. I never throw up ever either – I’m scared of it.

Erica March 11, 2010 at 5:53 am

Hey girlie! We all need a good break from blogging every now and again- I totally feel for ya. I’m totally making some more broccoli hut hummus tonight after seeing yours- she is a genius! Yum Yum. Knock on wood I never get sick any more. I had my tonsils (finally) removed a few years ago and it has made a WORLD of difference. Growing up, I used to get strep and ear infections on a monthly basis. Jamaica was pretty exciting- I also finally got my body pump evaluation and I passed- hoooray!

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) March 11, 2010 at 5:56 am

Sometimes you just can’t beat a big ol’ bowl of standard banana oats. YUM!

I’m the type that never gets sick…but when I *do* get sick, I’m such a baby about it and it usually lasts forever. Go figure…haha. :D

Happy Thursday! :D

Jenna March 11, 2010 at 7:09 am

nuttzo looks fab! so jealous ;)

Susan March 11, 2010 at 7:27 am

Three cheers for pursuing your goals! It makes me smile to know you’re going full steam ahead (not that you were any type of slacker before though).

And I must say, seeing that dollop of nut butter on your oats is music to my….eyes?….taste buds?….eh whatever!

Best thing that’s happened to me recently? I was asked to join PsiChi (a psychology fraternity) because of my good grades : )

Have a good Thursday love!

Ally (Sweet & Savory) March 11, 2010 at 7:28 am

You’ve never thrown up….ever? Wow. That is impressive. I don’t get sick often, but if I do it’s usually just a mild cold. Knock on wood.

brandi March 11, 2010 at 7:51 am

you can do it, girly :) Go after what you want! We’ll be here reading regardless ;)

Most exciting thing lately? About to start an awesome part time job that I’m REALLY excited about.

Dorothy March 11, 2010 at 8:23 am

Good for you for working towards what you want instead of just sitting back and watching life pass you by! I already miss reading your posts as often, but I’d rather read about you being super-motivated and happy!!!

Most exciting thing for me: My mom has finally given me the parental green-light to marry my boyfriend!! That made my day!

Therese March 11, 2010 at 8:59 am

Ugh I feel like blogland sucks me in like a vortex sometimes and a lot around me suffers. I don’t blame you for wanting to scale it back a bit.

I love Mrs. Dash on everything! I don’t even miss the salt!

Susan March 11, 2010 at 9:29 am

Yay for doing more freelance writing!! It will SO be worth the extra work, plus it’s doing something you love!

The only time I ever get sick is after a few days with little sleep. Lack of sleep does a number on my immune system, and it’s why I’m so rigid about my sleep schedule. Otherwise, it doesn’t happen much!

Hmm, I’m showing my apartment tonight! Hopefully I can find a subletter so I don’t have to pay off the rest of my lease after I move :\

Hope you’re feeling 100% again today Holly!!! xoxo

Morgan March 11, 2010 at 9:53 am

Yay for you pursuing your goals! I’m excited for you!
I don’t get sick a lot, but when I do it’s the full blown, knock you off your feet, make you whine like a baby sick.
I think I am leaving middle of nowhere PA and moving back to Boston. I think that’s excellent news!

Kacy March 11, 2010 at 10:01 am

You’ve never thrown up?! EVER?! Wow. I stand in awe.

I get sick often, blah.

I got a part time job at a running store! Very exciting para mi.

Loving that pesto bread.

samantha March 11, 2010 at 10:02 am

i love that little snacky plate! and that dinner looks bomb – i always have a hard time creating a good meal when i get home late from el gimnasio.

as for the exciting news, i’m getting new running shoes and a new ipod this week! yes.

Maya March 11, 2010 at 10:29 am

Man I wish we could do some half mary training together!

And you’ve never thrown up? For serious!? You’re immunity system is solid. I’ll miss your posts, but definitely blog whenever you feel like it!

sissy #1 March 11, 2010 at 10:35 am

Faboulous Iron Man comment. I LOL’d. Can’t wait for the sequel.

April March 11, 2010 at 10:43 am

I want some of that nut butter! My favorite nut butter is Sunland’s Mixed Nut Butter.. I have a feeling it’s like that one!

Lauren @ Eater not a runner March 11, 2010 at 10:56 am

I have the worst immune system ever. it sucks.

I do LOVE nuttzo though! Amazing :-)

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) March 11, 2010 at 11:27 am

I rarely get colds, flus, or stomach bugs – I’m more likely to get random ailments. i.e. when I was studying abroad, I contracted mono AND a ruptured ear drum while on a remote Greek island. That was fun, hah.

Exciting thing that’s happened to me lately? COOKIES from Momofuku milk bar in NYC. Seriously, they were food-gasmic :-) Also, I had a good 5K race last weekend. Wahoo!

Have a great Thursday lady!

Chelsea @ (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) March 11, 2010 at 11:52 am

Most exciting thing to happen to me lately would have to be seeing David Duchovny and Tea Leoni do a couple’s workout at the gym. Good to know they’re on the mend!

I get sick pretty regularly due to working with petri dishes (kids), but I have a feeling that’ll change once I retire from childcare a bit thanks to staying active and eating right.

Your lime infused zucchini looks tremendous!

janetha March 11, 2010 at 12:10 pm

i hear you on the busy-ness. i am kinda glad you havent been able to blog because i havent been able to keep up! but i did find a spot in my day to holly-fy my life. looks like you have been eating well and i like the prevention cocktail. i used to get sick with a sinus infection/bronchitis about 7 times a winter. no lie. but since i got my tonsils out in may.. i havent gotten sick all winter this time around! stoked! most exciting thing.. um.. well, it is a top secret. i will let you know when i can :) love you!

Michelle March 11, 2010 at 12:25 pm

Holly, i’m so with you on everything in this post! Sometimes, a break is THE BEST thing to do when life gets retardedly hectic. Oh great, that’s not even a word. oh well. You are doing some preeettty awesome things in your life, training for the 1/2 marathon included, so I would say you deserve to cut yourself some slack!

I totally got the flu this last weekend although BEFORE i got it, I had your exact mentality! I’m iron women. *sigh* looks like that’s not quite true. BOO it sucks to be sick!

And the uplifting thing must be…I got into dental school and i’m going to move to Boston in like…4 months!! WAHOOO!!!!

Lynn @ The Actors Diet March 11, 2010 at 12:57 pm

i used to always get sick as a kid, but now i rarely do. that doesn’t mean i don’t have medical problems though!!!

Graze With Me March 11, 2010 at 12:57 pm

Wait, what?

You’ve never thrown up? Like EVER? How in god’s name have you managed that!? I mean, don’t all babies throw up like 5x a day? I’ve been sick so many times growing up that my parents had a “Jessie’s puke bucket” just for me. I get carsick too so that doesn’t help… I probably throw up at least once a year now – depending on how many weddings I attend. Weddings = drunkenness for me!

Sarah (Finding My Balance) March 11, 2010 at 2:36 pm

YOU’VE NEVER THROWN UP??? define “never!”
i am the sickly type. right now, i am going on 10 days of a super nasty cold. i haven’t had the full power of my voice for over a week. it makes life tough when you’re a teacher…

exciting, happy thoughts… uhm, er, uhhh, it’s been a really stressful week. i’ll get back to you on that :(

i looooove the looks of that pesto-toasto! good idear! and i like the fiesta lime spice, too. it adds a nice zing, eh?

amanda March 11, 2010 at 5:50 pm

tazo tea rocks! no joke.

i used to {and maybe still do} love vitamin c’s friend’s forever song.
seriously, what’s not to loveeee?

i think being disciplined is hard! and sort of not fun. ughhh.

Gabriela (froyolover) March 11, 2010 at 6:27 pm

Amazing bowl of oats!
I´ve always wanted to try Nuttzo. I´m sure it´s the best nut butter out there ;)
About your blog-decision: I think you´re so right. Sometimes, we need to focus on the things we really want, so we can reach our goals. Whatever it takes, right? (Almost.. Haha)
Have a great night, girl!

elise March 12, 2010 at 12:11 pm

it’s too nice to be inside!! haha, i lived that this past weekend. seriously, once the weather gets gorgy again i want to abandon blog land and camp out under the sun and stars all night. ok, maybe thats a little too homeless for me, but you know what i mean (i like being outside).
need to try nuttzo. now.

since moving to nyc, i ALWAYS seem to be sick and its always on my days off. grrrrrrrrrr. soooo unfair. i was one of those never get sick types before – so im blaming it on the east coast. ha. clearly im heading towards bitter-ville, population 1, so im going to get out of your comments section now.

Emily (The Experimentarian) March 13, 2010 at 8:43 am

2) I am SO jealous of that Nutzo but butter. I need to google that shiz and figure out if I can get it here
3) HOw was the coconut oil on that zuchinni? I bought some the other day and I haven’t tried it yet. I am scared.
4) I NEVER throw up either. My body just refuses to do it. Which kind of sucks sometimes when nausea strikes and I know I would feel better if I’d just barf.
5) Miss you tons. I already said that. Once again for good measure. Good luck with the blogging, writing and balance. Love you friend!
