Do something everyday that…

by Holly on May 19, 2010

in breakfast,dinner,happiness,lunch

…scares you.

Perhaps a 6-mile run at 6:30am? Even though I slept a solid 9 hours (after falling asleep at 8pm in my work clothes and proceeding to wake up at 5am looking like a hot mess of a hungover college girl who had just woken up in some random guy’s bed), it still took every ounce of energy I had to run.  That and a slice of PB+J toast with black coffee.

…comforts you.

Yes, more PB+J+B toast and black coffee. No shame.

…gives you a sense of accomplishment.

For me, that was working diligently all morning and getting thisfrickinclose to finishing a few projects at work while sipping on a TJ’s Raspberry Lime sparkling water + POM juice mocktail.

…makes no logical sense whatsoever.

Like purchasing an overpriced KIND bar when you’re trying to stick to a budget and brought your lunch to work. Then, if at all possible, devour it in 0.02 seconds and never actually take the time to taste it.

…is completely new to you.

You all know I love my yog messes. That’s just plain fact. However, I think the apple mess is totally the new yog mess. Mark my words Zac Posen. Just take 1.5 cups of unsweetened, natural applesauce and add 1/2 cup of strawberries + 1 crumbled Dark Chocolate Muffin. Mess and eat.

…that involves the word ‘balls.’

If for no other reason than it’s good for an immature chuckle. And let’s be real, we need more immature chuckles in our lives. Whether it’s Caitlin’s Flax-Encrusted Sweet Potato Balls (below) or one of Averie’s Famous Raw Ball recipes, just say balls. It will immediately make you smile. Balls. I dare you. Balls.

…includes peanut butter + chocolate.

For obvious reasons.

…makes you feel like you are back in 6th grade.

Like ROLLERBLADING! I went rollerblading with my friend Steph after work for an hour. Did I almost biff it multiple times? Of course. But when you get sunny, 80 degree weather in Wisconsin, you soak up every last droplet of warmth and forget about falling face first in the grass.  Then you come home and while dinner is cooking, devour some of Gena’s delicious Banana Soft Serve

2 small frozen bananas
lots of cinnamon
1/2 T peanut butter

…is just plain good for your body.

Today, that meant veggies…LOTS of veggies! I took 3 heads of kale, and with the help of coconut oil, salt, garlic salt, crushed red pepper + a 400 degree oven, turned them into a mean batch of Kale Chips. Then I nuked a sweet ‘tater in the microwave for 6 minutes (poke holes in it first) and topped it with a bit o’ real buttah. And yes, I ate the skin. Mama Everythingtarian says that’s where all the fiber is.

…requires no thought at all.

Watch Glee, LOST (requires some thought) and Pray the Devil Back to Hell in bed with the same clothes you went rollerblading in, do some dishes while listening to Pandora, take a warm bath and go to bed without overthinking a single minute of your day. If you figure out how to do that last one, please let me know.

Fill in the blank. Do something everyday that ________, and give me an example from your day!

runnerforever May 19, 2010 at 11:04 pm

Do something every day that makes you smile, like playing with your cat :-)
Oh, and your food looks delish as always! In case you ate it too fast to remember, that Kind bar is amazing.

Jessica Lee May 19, 2010 at 11:09 pm

6 miles at 6am? Power to you girl!

Definitely no shame in having pbj toast multiple times. It’s DIVINE!!

I nuke my sp in the microwave too. Sometimes (wayyy more often than not) I just dont have the patience to bake it!

Madeline - Greens and Jeans May 19, 2010 at 11:10 pm

We ate almost the same thing for dinner. Creepy. Or awesome? We need to chat because I’m going to be in your neck of the woods tomorrow!

maria @ Chasing the Now May 19, 2010 at 11:33 pm

I say do something everyday that makes you smile INSIDE. :)

(I eat the skin on my potatoes, too. The husband claims this is disgusting. I disagree.)

Erica May 20, 2010 at 1:28 am

Great job on the AM run! I haven’t been rollerblading in ages- how fun! How good was lost? I am super excited (yet a little sad) for the finale this Sunday! An Applesauce mess sounds tasty- maybe I will have to give one a go tomorrow! My fill in the blank is Something that makes you feel alive- for me today that was running over one of the bridges in Charleston :)

claire May 20, 2010 at 1:37 am

Do something everyday that makes you laugh. Today I definitely tripped up the stairs, left my sunroof open during rain, and ate the sticker on my apple. Although these may be quite ridiculous and sometimes even just plain stupid, being clumsy usually makes me laugh, and definitely others!

The choc muffins…jealous!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is May 20, 2010 at 5:42 am

6 miles that early is amazing!

Matt May 20, 2010 at 5:45 am

Do something everyday that CHALLENGES you.

Lauren May 20, 2010 at 5:59 am

OMG I use to love to rollerblade but its been probably 10 years!!! I would definitely make a fool of myself now.

Love applesauce messes but I don’t think I’ve tried the strawberry combo. Now I will have to give it a try! ;)

Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) May 20, 2010 at 6:33 am

“makes you slow down and smell the roses.” To me, that means waking up an extra 15 minutes earlier this morning to sip on coffee and journal.

Your sweet potato looks divine. Your 6 mile run was divine too. Great job on an awesome run! :D

mammaeverythingtarian May 20, 2010 at 8:31 am

if you accomplished going to bed without over thinking a single minute in your day then you haver turned a corner:) and to keep your “positive” juices flowing i think you should down load the book” The Little Engine That Could” on your iphone and use it as your mantra. HOLLA

Danielle (Coffee Run) May 20, 2010 at 8:42 am

Do something everyday that makes you laugh :D

Today’s example: watching Knocked Up <– never gets old

Your soft serve looks like pizza dough! I still need to try it

Evan Thomas May 20, 2010 at 9:16 am

breaks the rules, like eating fudge out of the pan with a spoon :-)

Ana May 20, 2010 at 9:22 am

first…your mama everythingtarian is so cool for using the word HOLLA…and using it appropriately. my mama hasn’t gotten the proper usage thing down just yet. you are mad cool mamaE.

second…Do something everyday that makes you feel pampered…my poor runners feet/toes are just so calloused and sad, so last night i put some coconut oil on them and some fluffy socks while i was doing things around the house.

today they seem a little prettier than i know they actually are.

samantha May 20, 2010 at 9:22 am

that grosses you out…. like having a kickass 2 hour workout, not showering, and getting into bed. mmm.

ellie May 20, 2010 at 9:45 am

“requires no thought at all” <- yes, yes and YES. Muchos needed for sanity. I am intrigued by applesauce mess…mmmm…

Do one thing everyday that makes you laugh. I am currently watching Youtubes of Tim Minchin and it's working a charm…also dancing around my sitting room with my iPod on. Thankfully, I live alone.

Angharad May 20, 2010 at 9:49 am

…that keeps you sane.

Be it speaking to a friend, running, doing yoga, cooking, watching crazy-funny tv shows. Gotta stay sane!
P.S. You are a rock star. I cannot run in the morning. I hate it. I had to run 8 miles in the 80F heat last night instead. Sigh…

Jenna May 20, 2010 at 10:04 am

Hmmm apple messes sound tastyyy!

Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete May 20, 2010 at 10:26 am

…that you normally wouldn’t do like run in the rain. I usually don’t like running in the rain, but I made myself get out there today, and I laughed the entire 5 miles. It was refreshing!

Sami May 20, 2010 at 11:21 am

makes you appreciate what you have.

like buy a homeless man some fast food, only wishing you could’ve cooked him a nice homemade meal.

Liz May 20, 2010 at 11:21 am

Hey Holly! I love your blog but don’t normally comment. However, I had to tell you that I tried overnight oats this morning for breakfast! I see that you eat them quite often, so I used your normal recipe and decided to try them. Sooooooo good! They were fluffy and custardy and amazing. Thanks for sharing such a yummy, healthy breakfast!

Kristin (Salty Tooth) May 20, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Do something everyday that inspires you!

Dawn (HealthySDLiving) May 20, 2010 at 12:41 pm

HAHA TOTALLY used the word Balls last night! :) Made some PB Balls and of course…had a little laugh!

Kailey (SnackFace) May 20, 2010 at 1:03 pm

For some reason, when you told me you were going rollerblading, I thought you were going to a roller rink. No idea why! It was awesome imagery.

I need soft serve. Real, though.

I say, do something everyday that makes you laugh. For me, that means surrounding myself with my besties, creating a drinking game for Mad Men (not a good idea…well…it was good in a bad way) and watching ridiculous YouTube videos.

LOVE YOU! xoxoxoxo

Emily (A Nutritionist Eats) May 20, 2010 at 2:52 pm

That is thoughtful.

Rachael May 20, 2010 at 6:41 pm

Balls. The word never gets old, or unfunny. Apparently, I laugh too much when they are mentioned in any context ,food or otherwise. An old roommate decided I needed a pair of my own (the non-edible kind) and constructed a strap-on contraption made of burlap and filled with grits. Awesome. I did just write that. Wow. Standards, girl.
Kale chips with peanut butter sauce instead of cheesy nooch is what I’m all about right now.

Lauren (Health on the Run) May 20, 2010 at 7:21 pm

Haha I loved reading this! And all the comments about other things you should do everyday. I definitely agree with those who said “smile” or “laugh” — got that covered now, thanks to you Miss Everythingtarian.

I agreed with all of these, ESPECIALLY having pb and chocolate everyday (at least once)!

rachael May 20, 2010 at 9:35 pm

do something everyday that scares you is one of my absolutely favorite motos (:
your breakfast looks delicious, and your running is quite impressive!
i say, do something everyday that involves oats,
i couldnt live without!

Ilana May 20, 2010 at 11:23 pm

Do something every day that makes your heart sing! Aka – eat chocolate!

Can you believe Lost ends SUNDAY? I’m already crying and in pre-mourning.

Katherine May 21, 2010 at 4:32 am

I hate when I fall asleep early without changing clothes- you’re not the only one guilty of it!

Do something every day for someone else.
I try to send at least one meaningful text/email or make a meaningful phone call each day to someone just to tell them I’m thinking of them

Kacy May 21, 2010 at 7:21 am

… that makes you look like an idiot. It’s an hourly occurence for me. I own it.

Balls! Big flax balls! Instant happiness right thur.

I heart you. Way to kick ass on that run, try new, delicious snacks and bask in your general awesomeness :)

Diana @ frontyardfoodie May 21, 2010 at 8:13 am

You’re so freaking hardcore sister! Way to work it.

Katie May 21, 2010 at 9:43 am

Do something everyday that makes you PROUD. In my Vinyasa yoga class last night, I was proud of myself for trying a hand stand. Didn’t do it properly, but I got further in my attempt than I would have otherwise. I’m proud of myself for at least trying. :)

janetha May 21, 2010 at 11:26 am

this post is awesome. ‘specially the balls part. you make me smile. on the regular. do something everyday that involves thinking about holly w. DONE.

Katie May 21, 2010 at 12:57 pm

…that makes you laugh your head off. Today I participated in a “scooter race” with my kiddos and fell flat on my butt. I couldn’t stop laughing and I loved it.

Jess May 21, 2010 at 3:17 pm

…Makes you smile. Like hugging your best friend, or reading a good book!
<3 jess

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) May 21, 2010 at 4:49 pm

I love that I am known for balls. God, if I have accomplished nothing else in this life, mark me down for a pair of balls and ball jokes :) Love it Holly!

Ok I am so jealz that YOU are now meeting up w/ my homegirl. I hope the two of you have a faboosh time and I told her to give you a hug from my and that both of you should have far too much wine, in my honor of course :)

One day we can all meet up…I never say never :)

Jenny May 21, 2010 at 5:36 pm

baby do you have any idea what a dang inspiration you are?! I swear, I secretly save your posts on my google reader for when I have time to really sit down and appreciate every thing you say. You just always warm my soul! LOVE YOU HOLLY!

Lynn @ The Actors Diet May 21, 2010 at 9:01 pm

i love this post! all wonderful advice, especially the “balls” one – weirdly, i can think of instances every day this week that i have….don’t ask….
