TV (take nine!)

I know I don’t need to apologize but here I go anyways. Because I am the product of my genial, play-nice Midwestern upbringing after all, and it’s what we do.

Life is crazy good right now.

I’m doing my freelance writing thang. And making good progress!

I am also loving the whole graphic design thang too. Lately, I’ve designed Katie’s header and coded Brooke’s new blog and am working with various other bloggers on stuff in the works. It all feeds this deep, visceral need of mine to create and find beauty in the world. I’m still such a beginner (read: I need not be so hard on myself) but SO excited to see where things go.

Plus, I’m reading graphic design blogs like whoa! My favorites are here, here and here.

I’m doing a bunch of travel in the next couple months too. Travel is perhaps my ultimate love, so when I get to indulge my unending curiosity of the world, the very deepest part of me is satisfied. Minnesota, Door County, Boston, New York City and hopefully, Argentina.

Ooh and TV! My network friends in Madison and Milwaukee keep inviting me to hang out, and I love it. Just yesterday, Rob Starbuck and I talked all-natural, refreshing summer drinks.

Click here if you cannot see the above video.

And this upcoming Monday morning, I’m making new TV friends in Minneapolis! If you’re in the Twin Cities area, tune into KARE11’s midday show at 11:30am for some no-bake recipes.

All this means I’ve been needing to rediscover balance in my life.

Ya know, that thing that people always talk about but seriously, who ever actually finds balance? It’s like the cream that will supposedly get rid of the bags under my eyes. People tell me to try this and try that…and yet the bags remain. Meanwhile, I’m eating bagels + cream cheese for breakfast and throwing back New Glarus brews and skipping workouts, which no doubt contributes to the bags situation. So yeah, some balance would be nice. For my sanity and my eyes.

I am also working on The Healthy Everythingtarian 2.0. New look, new vision, same obsessions with Jake Gyllenhaal, Anthropologie + sparkling water.

So bear with me and drink a bubbly herbal spritzer (vodka, optional).

Let’s cheers to finding an undereye cream that actually works!

Lemon Basil Spritzers
Prep time: 5 minutes

5 to 6 basil leaves, torn or sliced into small pieces
1/4 to 1/2 t stevia OR 1 T regular or cane sugar
juice of 1 lemon
8 ounces regular or lemon sparkling water
4 to 5 frozen strawberries or fruit of your choice
optional: 1 (1.5-oz) shot of vodka or tequila, if desired

In a mason jar or cup, mix basil leaves, sweetener and lemon juice. Add sparkling water and alcohol, if desired. Stir. Add frozen strawberries, and enjoy!

Makes 1 mocktail

Homemade Iced Mint Green Tea

8 packets of green tea OR 8 T of loose-leaf green tea
8 cups of water
10 to 12 fresh mint leaves

In a pitcher, let teabags, water and mint leaves steep overnight in the refrigerator. In the morning, remove the teabags (or strain, if using loose-leaf tea).

Makes 8 cups of iced tea

Strawberry Nectarine Milkshake
Prep time: 5 minutes

1 nectarine, pitted
1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
1 cup milk of your choice*
1/2 cup ice cream*

*I used almond milk and Coconut Bliss Vanilla ice cream

In a blender, blend all ingredients together. For a thinner shake, add more milk. For a thicker shake, use less milk.

Makes 1 milkshake

I saw Rob Starbuck’s face on channel 3 after he tried your lemonade basil spritzer and KNEW I had to have one! I could tell he loved it! I have all of the ingredients and can’t wait to try it!

I am so glad thing s are rocking so hard for you!!! You are an amazing designer – I still smile every time I need my lovely banner. :) Which reminds me, I was going to send you a “thank you” package long ago and failed. I need you address so I can rectify my fail.

P.S. I just got a sample of a new eye cream, as I’m nearly 30 and terribly old. Will keep you posted.

You are so awesome! Re Jake, have you tried tweeting him several times every day until he answers? Yeah, I can’t possibly think of something you have not already. When does the new look debut?

Hi Holly,
I’m glad your hard work is paying off for you! I just took a peek at Katie’s blog – the header looks great. :-)

Yay, yay, yay! I love everything about this post and your life right now :) so happy things are going well! I don’t doubt that out of all the reasons to need more balance, everything simultaneously working out in your favor and keeping you busy and fulfilled to the max is probably the best. Can’t wait to see you (with or without bags)! xo

Door County (Wisconsin, I am assuming?) is fantastic!!! Make sure you check out the town of Fish Creek, the restaurant Wild Tomato there is really, really good for casual, entirely homemade and largely natural dishes (and several that employ local ingredients, such as the cherries Door County is renowned for!) It is super close to Peninsula State Park. Also, the open-air farmers markets with all the cherries are fun, and there is a great little pie shop that is run in this older woman’s own home, called Sweetie Pie’s. She is a grandmother and runs the shop herself. I know we all can’t indulge in dessert every single day, but YOU HAVE TO TRY her pies, and bring some home for family and friends! They are THAT good! Have fun!

I feel crazy good after reading this post …gah, your life and your energy for all this just makes me so happy. Also, Brookes blog looks AMAZING and that header is type perfection. You’re not making beginner design mistakes at all, so, to the rest of us you look a lot less like a beginner than you might imagine! Sending lots of love North to you everyday! Emily

For whatever reason, I love your sentence “Travel is perhaps my ultimate love, so when I get to indulge my unending curiosity of the world, the very deepest part of me is satisfied.” Minnesota, Door Country, New York–three of my fave places! Have fun, lady.

Charlotte July 16, 2012 at 10:47 am

Those drinks look delicious! You know I love my sparkling water too so I am very excited to try that lemon basil spritzer. Woot woot!

P.S. Nice nail polish. Trying to not bite them? ;-)

Megan (Braise the Roof) July 16, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Wow, sounds like you have some awesome trips coming up! I haven’t been to Door County in such a long time. :) I hear you on the balance thing. I find myself lamenting that there aren’t enough hours in the day WAY too often, but I guess it’s bound to happen when I insist on doing ALL THE FUN, right? Nothing to complain about. I’m glad your freelancing/graphic design stuff is coming along, good for you!

Lauren T July 16, 2012 at 1:29 pm

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again-I love you on TV! Such a great voice and personality. I also love these drinks! They’re so easy and refreshing! Your life sounds pretty great right now, congrats :)

Mmmm yummy sounding drinks! I’m a fan of mojitos, so I feel like I’d like that mint green tea, too. My mom, on the other hand, has this perspective about drinks like that: “There should not be leaves floating in my drink”. Pshhh…the leaves make it taste better! Haha.
