Friends and the City

Happy weekend my lovelies!

After a busy, whirlwind weekend, I have returned to the homeland.  That being Wisconsin, of course. I don’t even know where to start with this post because the last three days were jam-packed full of times with good friends (with a family member thrown in for good measure).

Early Friday morning, I made a quick stop at the co-op for some breakfast + driving snacks for my journey to Minnesota.  Little did I know, my co-op has a ridonkulously awesome A.M. oatmeal bar…

1 cup steel cut oats
2 tbsp. coconut milk
dark brown sugar
1/4 cup raisins
raw pepitas (pumpkin seeds)

Oh. My. Oatmeal. Coconut milk makes for the creamiest, most delicious add-in ever.  Along with a jumbo coffee (because caffeine is desperately needed when one is driving four hours) and snackage…

The oatmeal filled me up quite beautifully, so I actually ended up eating these as snacks throughout the weekend.  Not like you care.  But ya know…just sayin’.

When I arrived in the Land of 10,000 Lakes (although, apparently Wisconsin TECHNICALLY has more), I met up with a bunch of ladies I used to work with for lunch.  I got the Portabella Melt (with pepperjack and guacamole, nuff’ said) with a side of cottage cheese

It was so good to catch up with Kelly, Laurie and Lori (who also happen to read the blog – HELLO LADIES!). Then, at 2pm, I had a very important date.

Nope, not with Mr. Lawyer (unfortunately), but with a much more important man in my life – MY GRANDPA! We chatted for a couple hours and caught up on life.  He is 85 years old, stubborn and thinks he is always right.  In other words, we are very much alike, minus the whole 85-year-old thang.

I had my next date…with my college bestie Jamie!

It was Ms. Jamie’s birthday on Thursday, and so naturally we celebrated by doing three things:

  1. Shopping
  2. Eating
  3. Taking a lemon drop shot

It’s tradition.

While shopping at the mall, guess who was asked to be on the news?

Look familiar? Ah yes, there was apparently a stabbing (violent, I know!) at a local mall a couple weeks ago and so one of the news stations was doing a follow-up on mall security.

If you would like to see Jamie + I and hear my wise advice on how to stay safe at the mall, click here.

After my 15 minutes seconds of fame (hey, at least my cousin was watching the 9pm local news on a Friday night!), we headed out to dinner, ate LOTS of food and watched our all-important debut on the local Twin Cities news.

The next morning, Jamie and I headed out for a 4.5 mile run. Although slightly chilly, it felt so good to run outside with one of my all-time fave running partners again.  Then, I quickly showered, chugged some coffee and met my high school friend Jess out for lunch to meet her new boyfriend.  I told you this weekend was jam-packed.

After we ate, we had to stop by McDonalds to pee.  When one goes to McDonalds, one often comes out with one of these as well…

CARAMEL SUNDAE HEAVEN. And only $1.08.  Can’t beat it.

You also can’t beat a homeless man holding the door open for Jess + I to leave McD’s and saying, “Hey beautiful.  Let me open the door for you.  I’m not even drunk.”

Then we went shopping at Urban Outfitters, where I randomly ran into Brooke!  I can’t believe I didn’t know about her FABULOUS blog until now.  She is a tres chic fashionista and veggie, which I totally love. Her and her friend Hannah were so sweet, and we chatted for a couple minutes before parting ways.

Then, I met up with the lovely Emily for coffee chat!  We met once before when she was in Madison, and it was so much fun to catch up with her again.  She is adorable, fun and we have lots in common.  AND, she brought me these heavenly peanut butter chocolate cookies.  Gah, they were AMAZING!

Next up…dinner out with my ladies!

Beer? Check.

Sushi? Check.

Time spent with best friends? Check.

Twas’ a good night.

This morning, I met up with my very first bloggie friend and now real friend Angharad.  I heart this girl. We went on a 7-mile run outside and then out to brunch at Minneapolis’ infamous French Meadow.  Yes, they are the same people that make all the wonderful bread many of you eat.

Angharad got the southwestern hash with chicken sausage (amazing)…

I went for the zone omelet (egg whites, spinach, goat cheese + sundried tomatoes)…

And we both went for multiple cups of coffee.

I grabbed a cranberry white chocolate scone for the road…

…because you can’t NOT buy an organic cranberry white chocolate scone when you have the opportunity.

Insert 4 hours of driving followed by grocery shopping, eating, unloading groceries and laundry time.

I am pretty sure my laundry has been sitting in the dryer for about 20 minutes while I finish this post.  People are probably wondering why I am sitting on my computer when my clothes are obviously done.  LAYOFF FELLOW LAUNDROMAT USERS! When a girl’s gotta blog, a girl’s gotta blog!

With that, here is the winner of the breakfast giveaway…

That’s so cute you met up with your grandfather :-) And isn’t coconut milk in oats the best?!

Amy B @ Second City Randomness February 28, 2010 at 9:12 pm

Girls nights out are always best when they include sushi! It’s one of my fave traditions! :)

Matt February 28, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Sounds like a great weekend!

My laundry totally sits in my dryer for DAYS after is done. No shame ;)

Katie February 28, 2010 at 9:20 pm

Girl, you look GORGEOUS in your TV appearance! Love that hat and scarf combo! I am sure that if I was ever asked to be on TV it would undoubtedly be when I looked like a scrub. You’re awesome…and wise about the violent mall, too. :-)

Glad you had such a good weekend! The highlight of mine was throwing a successful baby shower and having ice cream for dinner tonight. I am also looking forward to seeing my bestie (hopefully) this week!

katie February 28, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Jenna February 28, 2010 at 9:33 pm

Great weekend!!

Angharad (Eating for England) February 28, 2010 at 9:41 pm

Highlight of my weekend was HANGING OUT WITH YOU!! Loved your post (probably because I had pre-heard about most of it and just nodded my head along as I read). Comments:
1. You look absolutely BEAUTIFUL in the still shot from Fox9.
2. That newsclip is the funniest/best thing I have seen in months and you are it’s star! Hilarious! Dan and I peed our pants.
3. Brunch and running and generally hanging out this morning was so fun and so overdue.
4. Move back here.
5. I hope that scone was as good as it looked.

Thing I am most looking forward to this week. Hmmm, did I gabble on about it enough today?! GOING TO ENGLAND ON THURSDAY!

Love you xxx

Katharina February 28, 2010 at 9:42 pm

You bumped into Brooke?!!?! OH MY GOSHHHH. She is quite a fabulous young lady ;) Speaking of fabulous ladies.. you look so good in that candid shot of you in the news. No joke. You have awesome bone structure. Okay so it’s pretty much no secret now that I’ve got a crush on you mwahaha. ANYWAY, it sounds like you had such a fun weekend and with your number one ladies, no less! You’re right by the way about the coconut milk–I love adding it into my oats. So creamy and delicious. I had no idea that McDonald’s had a caramel sundae!! Next time I’m on a road trip I am snagging myself one. I alwys watch out for DQ’s but it seems that whenever I’m actually looking for a DQ along the 95.. they disappear. I’m serious. Ughhh so much good food in this post. That’s so cool that you went to the French Meadow Bakery! Take me there :D I love their bread. And I am with you on the scone hehe.

Highlight of my weekend?? Going to a house show my friends had to raise money for Haiti. Also… a much needed yoga sesh and detox bath.

My parents coming into town and the fashion show I’m going to be in on SATURDAY!!!!!!!

Mama Pea February 28, 2010 at 11:13 pm

Holy TV news, lady! You should have said, “Stay classy, Wisconsin.” :)

Um, when exactly did you eat that Larabar? I will not be able to board a plane in 36 hours not knowing. (Guess what I’m excited for…)

I LOVE your glasses. Love em, love em, love. THEM.

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is March 1, 2010 at 5:35 am

I put coconut milk in my oatmeal one morning when I had some leftover…it was so incredible!

Bekah March 1, 2010 at 7:19 am

You are very tvgenic my friend! You look hot! Just from that one picture..

Jenny March 1, 2010 at 8:03 am

What a fun weekend! And I love all the blogger meeting up you got to do, lucky duck!

I’m not gonna lie, I had a research assignment to do in lab yesterday that was prettttty darn cool, yea, I’m a nerd ;)

I’m looking forward to recharging this week, and beginning my official spring break countdown!!

Maya March 1, 2010 at 8:36 am

Awesome weekend! I totally watched the news piece. You definitely snazzed up the news story! Loved it. Jealous that you went to French Meadow Bakery! Their bread is the shiz.

brandi March 1, 2010 at 8:44 am

what a fabulous weekend :)

and this totally cracked me up: “Hey beautiful. Let me open the door for you. I’m not even drunk.” – seriously, a good laugh on a Monday morning is always welcome :)

Welcome home!!!

Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats March 1, 2010 at 8:51 am

DANG!! What a fun weekend!!!!

I heart Minneapolis and am so jealous you got to go, visit and RUN there! It’s my fave. :)

Madeline - Greens and Jeans March 1, 2010 at 8:52 am

“I’m not even drunk.” That is pure gold right there. Highlight of my weekend was going to the farmers market, highlight of the week is going to California to find an apartment!

Kailey (SnackFace) March 1, 2010 at 9:05 am

Oh, that’s just my gorgeous friend on the news there. No big deal…GAHH!!!! Of course I watched that clip. While you were fabulous, I think my favorite part was the mall manager saying that his customers are “good shoppers.” It’s very odd to me. OH! And your makeup looks gorge!

May I please have that scone? That really would be impossible to resist. Actually, I’d like a little bit of everything pictured, please.

Hmmm highlight of the weekend that’s safe for public…so many. Heading home after a fab night of dancing with my girls, chowing down on chips+crap food (AKA delicious food) and mayj girl talk. Or was it last night in the newsroom when Muffin introduced me to R.Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet. I died at least 35 times.

This week, I am looking forward to going home Friday!!! I miss my family and my fur babies!

OK!! We need to catch up. I may not be on Gchat until…Tuesday. I’m not sure. We’ll see how all my projects go.

LOVE YOU!!! xoxoxoxxoo

Kacy March 1, 2010 at 9:35 am

Portobella melt AND CC?! That’s perfection plated. Look at you, local celebrity!! Kind of scary about the stabbing though! Micky D’s soft serve is just rediculous, isn’t it? It’s too good to be from a fast food joint! Sounds like you had a great weekend :)

Lindsay (Waking Up Hungry) March 1, 2010 at 10:29 am

OK, so now I need a portabella mushroom melt like right now!! Sounds awesome. What a great fun filled weekend!

samantha March 1, 2010 at 10:42 am

Oh goodness! So many good things to comment on :-) Love all the outside runnin’ AND the brunch at French Meadow Bakery. Their products are AMAZING. Hemp bagels = so good. Highlight of my weekend? A successful long run on Saturday and then being a lazzzzzzyyyyy bum and sleeping for 9.5 hours on Saturday night. Mmm.

Glad your weekend was a success! xoxo

Katie March 1, 2010 at 11:24 am

WHOA, where do I even start? Road trip! Oatmeal bar! I used to add coconut milk to my oats in college when I had an open can in the frizzle… don’t know why I stopped! STABBING AT THE MALL? I can’t wait to watch the vid when I get home! I’m glad you’re giving the press you good ‘pinions :-) Great weekend all around.

Enjoy your week, Holly!

Chelsea @ (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) March 1, 2010 at 11:40 am

I love Grandparents. While I only have one living, she’s the best and our conversations could last until I turned 85.

Ummmm, that news bit is the best. Hahaha. Thank you for sharing.

Oatmeal bars? I may not drink anymore, but that’s one bar where I would show some fiercely addictive behavior. Glad you had a fun, busy, and friend-filled weekend!

Emily (A Nutritionist Eats) March 1, 2010 at 12:23 pm

So fun (as always) to see you! I’m headed over to Fox9 news to check out your TV debut!
PS. The zone omlette from French Meadow is my FAVORITE!

Adj (Tattoos & Champagne) March 1, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Weekend highlights in the following order of awesomeness:
(1) Came across troop of Girl Scouts selling boxes of Tagalongs
(2) Afternoon BBQ with group of pals for Olympics (I got to make Shrimp and Sausage Kebabs)
(3) The men’s hockey game. Although it pained me to see the US lose, I am originally from Pittsburgh and hence love Sid the Kid.

This weekend? My older sis and her hubby are going to come for a visit! We’re going to check out the Spy Museum for her birthday – yay!!

rebecca lustig March 1, 2010 at 1:33 pm

what a pick up line!! ha
Hope you are able to have a mindful Monday! (Yes, I’m loving alliterations)
bec xo

Whit March 1, 2010 at 2:44 pm

You celebrity! I’m going to watch that news segment RIGHT NOW, because it has been too long since we met and I miss your midwestern accent.

Got moved this weekend, so that was the most exciting thing to happen to me. I’d say you can come visit, but my couch is SUPER uncomfortable, so I will hold off all invites until i invest in a blow up mattress.

Catherine March 1, 2010 at 5:44 pm

The highlight of my weekend was cleaning my house!! I love a clean house.

It are my birthday this week as well. On Thursday :)

Susan March 1, 2010 at 8:22 pm

Holly! You looks so wonderful under the glow of mall lights! How do you DO that!?? :P American news is so different than Canadian news… your clips are like 3 seconds a piece, whereas here they let people ramble on foreverrrr. Jealous you got to spend time with Angharad, and I’m impressed that restaurant offered cottage cheese as a side! Favourite part of the weekend was the amazing hockey game yesterday (well, amazing on this side of the border anyways ;) ) and I’m looking forward to going home on Friday the most for this week!

Jessica Lee March 1, 2010 at 10:36 pm

I dont discriminate against McDonald’s mainly because their sundaes are delish! PLUS it’s lowfat ice cream :) I get the strawberry one and sometimes, I really just want a cone :)

Annabel @ March 2, 2010 at 9:42 am

Love your t.v. debut! you’re so purdy!

Faith March 2, 2010 at 7:40 pm

This looks like so much fun! Very exciting about your news debut! I had to laugh at that story about the guy holding the door for you at McDonald’s! :)

Allison March 8, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Say WHAT?!?!! I’ve been a member @ Willy St for almost a year and haven’t discovered the oatmeal bar… unbelievable!
