Good to Be Home

After a week and a half of traveling around the rolling hills of America’s Dairyland for work and four days of no blog posts, I can happily share with y’all I am back in the comforts of my apartment in Madison.

It feels good to be home.

It also feels good to have a week full of routine ahead of me.

In case you missed it, my aging body likes routine.

My aging body also likes when I don’t drink alcohol, but somehow I chose to ignore that fact last night.

Anyways, yours truly is really excited and surprisingly content to get back to regular eating, regular workouts and a somewhat regular daily schedule (including blogging!). I will say however, getting out of the office and changing up the normal work pace was extremely beneficial because…

…I discovered Subway breakfast sandwiches!!!

Seriously, delicious.

My flatbread sandwich was topped with egg whites, pepperjack cheese and 2 slices of bacon then toasted to perfection. Topped with spinach, tomato, red onion and green pepper and guzzled down with a venti coffee, I can officially say I have discovered a new grab n’ go breakfast love.

That’s not to say I didn’t fully enjoy grocery shopping for the first time in two weeks.

Because I did.

A trip to a local farmer’s food stand + Trader Joe’s later…

  • baby red potatoes
  • garbanzo beans
  • baby carrots
  • green beans
  • 2 TJ’s Fiberful veggie + fruit leathers
  • cucumbers
  • tomatoes
  • TJ’s Triple Layer Hummus
  • TJ’s Mediterranean Hummus
  • baby spinach
  • yellow onion
  • TJ’s Vegetable Masala Burgers
  • bananas
  • multigrain pita chips
  • organic skim milk
  • Thai yellow curry sauce
  • dried apricots

Grand Total = $35.35

That, my friends, is why I love shopping at farmer’s markets + Trader Joe’s.

It’s good I kept to my $40 grocery budget this week, because last week, in the midst of driving around Cheese Country, I found a running shoe bargain I simply could not pass up.

Normally around $100, I scored these blue Saucony Pro-Grid Omni 8 running shoes for less than $70.

And I wonder why I’m in a constant state of poverty.

I just can’t pass up a good deal.

I blame Mama Everythingtarian.

In the spirit of getting back in the routine groove, I arrived home to my apartment and immediately set out to make a soul-soothing, easily-digestible Smoothie in a Bowl (a.k.a. SIAB)

1 cup organic skim milk
1 cup frozen mixed berries
1/2 banana
1 T vanilla brown rice protein powder
2 cups baby spinach
1 handful Quaker Cinnamon Oatmeal Squares, crushed
drizzle of sunflower seed butter

To the tune of “D!ick in a Box,” because a gal can never get enough of Justin Timberlake.

“It’s my smoothie in a bowl…”

Alright peeps, sorry to make it short – I MUST get outside and enjoy this sunny, 70 degree weather. And finish a freelance writing project. And clean my apartment. Not to mention laundry.

That, and I have a V.I.P. party to attend for the VMA’s tonight with my ladies.

I’m bringing the hummus + veg (see above) and hope that Kanye makes another diva move like he did last year. The VMA’s aren’t the VMA’s without a bit of drama.

It sure feels good to be home.

What is one thing exciting that’s happened to you in the last week? I am so behind on e-mails and blog reading, help an Everythingtarian catch-up!

Glad you had a nice trip. I haven’t tried subways bfast yet, but it looks pretty darn good! TJs…so jealous. We need one in Charleston super bad (just like the movie). Aren’t those Oatmeal Squares the jam? Love those things. One exciting thing that happened to me? I didn’t have weekend plans and it was wonderful!

Kittie September 12, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Heh. I bought a pair of those shoes in black and teal for $34 at TJ Maxx last month :x

Kittie September 12, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Whoa. wrong emoticon….disregard that

Alex @ IEatAsphalt September 12, 2010 at 4:51 pm

I about died last year when Kanye took the mic out of TSwift’s hand. That was a classic. Thanks for reminding me that its on tonight!

Mallory September 12, 2010 at 4:52 pm

Amber September 12, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Glad to hear that your trip went well! Word of caution about subway I read an article (it was a post on my blog awhile back) that an ingredient in their bread is the same ingredient in most fertilizers. I won’t eat there anymore and I wish that I could. I loved subway! Maybe they’ll change and I can eat there again. Love the farmer’s market btw!

Lindsay @ Pinch of Yum September 12, 2010 at 5:20 pm

Your SIAB looks great. And i love those little oatmeal squares!

Jenna September 12, 2010 at 5:40 pm

I love shopping at TJ’s too. They have such great food, but not the huge selection like at the grocery store, so I’m never tempted to go crazy!

I went to Chicago last weekend, so that was fun!

Angharad September 12, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Glad you’re back safe and sound and enjoying the home life – feels so good after a week like that! I have just finished cooking and eating the most decadent, glorious green bean casserole of all time and now I’m going to take a long walk to a coffee shop to digest and sip something yum on this gorge night.

Email me tomorrow! xx

Heather (Perspective Is Everything) September 12, 2010 at 5:59 pm

LOVE J.T on SNL….moreso on the Barry Gibb talk show and as the storefront rep-like in omelette-ville or homeless-ville :D
Ooooh-I’m not even hungry and i want one of those SIABs now :)

excitement from the past week-found out we’re moving to Seattle! Yikes!!

Hilary September 12, 2010 at 6:13 pm

Hi!! Long time reader, first time commenting! First of all, thanks for reminding me about the VMA’s and second of all my mom is the SAME WAY when it comes to buying stuff. Whenever I say “I really want _______” her response is “buy it!”. Which would be fine if I had an unlimited amount of money. Mother’s are such bad influences ;). Hope you enjoy resuming a routine schedule!

Adam September 12, 2010 at 6:27 pm

Kanye will out-do himself, believe me! I am counting on it. And once you calculate out the amount of ice cream one can safely eat after the Wisconsin Ironman; let me know, i am thinking about running/swimming/biking it next year ;) It must be pretty inspiring to stand at the finish… ” Girl You Know I’ve Wanted Breakfast For A Long, Long Time… Now I’m Ready To Blend Up Some Fruit Real Fine… You Know I’m Hungry And A Glass Just Won’t Do…. Gonna Make Myself Somethin’ To Satisfy My Hunger Qssss… It’s My Smoothie In A Bowl!

Crunchy Granola Gal September 12, 2010 at 6:47 pm

oof, do i hear you! i was away all weekend, ate like a champ and did lotsa fun things but am very pleased to be home. routine is good after you’ve strayed from it for awhile, that is for sure. hope the rest of your sunday is restful :)

hmm, one exciting thing? a random radio interview i had the opportunity to do as a result of something i wrote. neat eh?

Tay September 12, 2010 at 7:39 pm

Did you get the shoes from running warehouse? Because I definitely got them for $59 + tax from there this past week!

BroccoliHut September 12, 2010 at 7:55 pm

I am seriously incapable of passing up a good bargain too…and I also blame it on Mama Broc.

Kristie September 12, 2010 at 8:20 pm

IRONMAN WISCONSIN! Seriously, watching it made me tear up. The people who do it are amazing. And incredibly good looking haha.

I am glad you are home. That means we can hang out sometime, right? :)

Virginia September 12, 2010 at 8:34 pm

grocery shopping is the bestt! each bag is a future promise of having a happy, well-fed tums :D and yah, even though the farmer’s market in my area is pretty expensive and snobby (well, as snobby as carrots, flowers and mr.random hobo-lookin’ guitar guy that kind of looks like a lost cowboy on a wooden stool can be…) , trader joe’s is always and forever gonna be wass happenin’ AND wassup in my book :D

Maya September 12, 2010 at 9:44 pm

I cannot pass up a good deal either, nor can I pass up a visit to the grocery store, even if I don’t need anything. There could be worse compulsions!

Madeline - Greens and Jeans September 12, 2010 at 11:03 pm

Can I be preemptively excited to see you in a few weeks? You KNOW I can’t pass up a good deal! I’ve spent too much money in the past few days on things that were just “too good to be true.” Ugh. Not the best way to be saving for magical adventures…

Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches September 12, 2010 at 11:06 pm

One exciting thing in the life and times of yours truly: I had my first medical school interview in DC, and it went way better than I thought it would! Wootwoot! No complaints. :) September 12, 2010 at 11:34 pm

saucony is a great shoe! i need new running shoes and ive been thinking about going for a saucony instead of new balance hmm.

oh those multigrain pita chips look like theyre major yummy!! <3 home sweet home <3 welcome back home girl!

Leanne September 13, 2010 at 8:28 am

Glad you are back! I noticed that we both purchased the same masala veg burgers this weekend. I don’t know if you’ve had them before but I tried one on Saturday and loved it! I haven’t tried out the jeggings yet (did I get it right this time?) but I’ll let you know. Happy Monday!

Garet September 13, 2010 at 8:36 am

I’m jealous that your Subway carries spinach! Our stopped after one of the recent salmonella scares.

Britannie September 13, 2010 at 10:17 am

I know almost every word to dick in a box.. jusssayin. That’s soo fricken awesome that you referenced that :D

Megan (Braise the Roof) September 13, 2010 at 10:40 am

Welcome home! I also have a special place in my heart for the ridiculous amount of items I can bring home from TJ’s with a ridiculously low price tag! And hey- we have almost the same running shoes! Mine were definitely $100…where did you find them for $70??

Kacy September 13, 2010 at 10:49 am

I still haven’t tried the Subway breakfast, but it sounds mighty tasty!

Great deal on the shoes, that was totally a wise purchase :)

Katie September 13, 2010 at 12:40 pm

I always loving getting back to a routine after traveling to! And I didn’t know subway had brekkie sammies either! How awesome is that. Also, Sauconys are my fave running shoes, I have 2 pairs and I need another. Yes, need.

The last 4 days have been pretty ho-hum for me…nothing to exciting. In fact, I fell asleep while watching a movie on my laptop in bed at 7pm last night. How’s that for grandmotherly? You’re not the only old soul… :-)

Christine September 13, 2010 at 12:47 pm

I moved to Manhattan yesterday, and the ONE thing lacking is a Trader Joe’s. There’s one in Chelsea, which is way too far, and one opening up about 30 blocks away, but that’s still pretty darn far. I was actually really surprised to find that out; Whole Foods and The Food Emporium are EVERYWHERE, and TJ’s seems like the perfect mix of the two. It’s such a city-appropriate store, too. Bummer…

emily (a nutritionist eats) September 13, 2010 at 1:14 pm

So glad you are back! I’ve missed you!!

Sami September 13, 2010 at 1:28 pm

I feel tottallly behind, too! I was at a conference from Friday to Saturday night and missed SO much in the blog world. Not only that, I had to do THREE posts just to catch up haha. LOVE the SIAB….I’ve got to try those Oatmeal Squares! I hear they’re delicious…do you like the ones with brown sugaar or are yours the original?

Kailey (SnackFace) September 13, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Lovaaaahh!!! I feel like we haven’t chatted in forevs. Fix soon? Oui oui.

Hmmmm this past week…err, chillin in Athens all weekend has been pretty bangin. I really want to move back, actually, lol. WHAT I’M ONLY 22…right? Thinking about maybe taking some business classes. But as you know, my plans change errday.

GCHAT ME NOWWWWW, please. Lub you!

kate September 13, 2010 at 2:54 pm

I always find good deals when Im broke. You just cant pass up stuff like that even when you only have pennies in your account!

janetha g. September 13, 2010 at 2:55 pm

welcome home! it looks like you had a grand ol’ time while frolicking at the TJs and local farm stand. great purchases. and i havent tried subways bfast, maybe i will have to give it a shot sometime?

Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) September 13, 2010 at 5:09 pm

Beautiful bounty of healthy groceries! Also, major score on the running shoe bargain. Hope you continue to enjoy settling back into your normal groove and are able to stop and take some deep breaths. Love you lady!

Faith September 13, 2010 at 6:00 pm

I’m all about the routine now too. (What can I say, it must be old age setting in? ;) ) I seriously need to discover Subway’s breakfast sammies — wow, do they look good!

Dani July 18, 2011 at 12:44 am

Liked the post. I’m gonna have to show this to my (future) bf heh. Hope you’re having a great Sunday. – Dani
