Did everyone have a good 4th of July? And by good 4th of July, I mean are you or are you not alive after this massive heatwave consumed the entire United States this week? Because I am barely hanging in there. The ice-cold Grainbelt beer, gazpacho and sprinkler helped me survive the holiday along with a Lentil Israeli Couscous Salad that might be the best salad I’ve ever made. Iced coffee, air conditioning, Netfilx and cold showers have been helping with the rest.
Are you ready for the weekend even though we already had a mini-weekend this week? Consider it a second weekend. I’m off to a fish fry tonight then Chicago for a mini getaway tomorrow.
Here’s some links to keep you entertained until my return…all hail summer!
Breakfast nachos. Get ‘em while they’re hot…or before I eat them all.
These carrot chickpea burgers will be made in my kitchen next week. That’s only if the temperature dips below 100 however. If not, the oven stays off.
I am a genius: Strawberry Nectarine Milkshakes.
My homegirl Sarah has the most refreshing recipe for a cold brew iced tea PIMM’S CUP. Only one of my favorite British beverages ever (besides beer and English cider, obvs).
The newest addition to my Google Reader? Jeremy and Kathleen. Her creativity and insane design skills and amazing freelance advice is a total inspiration these days.
Yep, this article was written about me…and millions of other Americans. Take a break and read it.
Stay tuned Milwaukee! I am coming at ya on the Fox 6 Wake-Up Morning Show at 8:40am on Monday with easy ideas for cool summer cooking. Heaven knows we all need it.

Girl, you’d better share that lentil salad recipe before I drown in this Arkansas heat, or before I eat my body weight in Popsicles. Whichever happens first.
Breakfast. nachos. YES. I want that for dinner tonight. Also, if you have any spare time while you’re in town this weekend, give me a call!
Happy weekend to you too my friend! Stay cool and enjoy every moment. :)
Happppy weekend… Love that NYT article! So very true…I love the line where the writer calls himself the laziest ambitious person. ;) And D.C. (where I live) epitomizes that busy trap I think.
Loving the mid week holiday. Breakfast nachos? I’m so in. I kind of love the crazy heat…I guess thats why I live in SC haha
Yup, I’m justtttt barely alive in this heat. Yet for some reason I had the genius (not at all genius) idea to bake today. Then I proceeded to mess up the recipe, yet post it on my blog anyway. So I’d say this heat is getting to me :P
Hi Holly – poor you, that heatwave sounds absolutely heinous! Luckily the West Coast has been spared, thus far…
Btw, I’ve been reading your posts about launching out into the world of freelancing, and just wanted to say congratulations! It’s such a hard but brave choice, and I’m sure living your life according to your own dictates is liberating in its own way :) Thanks for the inspiration!
I think the heat is subsiding this week horray!! I liked that article you included in your post about being busy. It’s a great reminder that there is more to life than work and “busyness”
strawberry nectarine milkshake?! i’ll take four, please.
Breakfast nachos is totally genius – love it!
I somehow knew before clicking the link about The Busy Trap that that’s what article it was! I included it in my weekend reading post recently too :)
