I Finally Got a Dining Room Table

I forgot to tell you the best part about my weekend – I FINALLY GOT A DINING ROOM TABLE!

Each room in my house is themed, because I am a huge nerd like that.  My living room is Southeast Asian-inspired (filled with my souvenirs from Thailand + China + Laos); my bathroom is beachy with lots of washed out colors (think greens, pinks, yellows); and my dining room is going to be straight out of France!

Starting with an actual Provencal French tablecloth an exchange student gave my parents when he stayed with us…

With a side of an Henri Matisse print + Pumpkin Oats…naturally. ***Note: The theme of my kitchen + bedroom is TBD.

The theme of lunch was Morocco-revisited

Look at those beautious layers…

On a related note, Mama Pea challenged me to a Moroccan Stew ThrowdownBobby Flay-style.  Ya know what I say to that? Peas bring it on!

Afternoon snack was a cup of Ghirardelli Hot Chocolate.  I think I made the mistake of making it with water instead of milk.  And you thought my mistake was having it in a Green Bay Correctional Institution mug.  Oh how wrong you were.

After getting in late to work because of an eye appointment (more on that in a bit), I also left a wee bit early for my 2nd day at the new part-time gig.  Of course, I needed a dinner that was portable and delish:

Materne Apple Cinnamon + Apple Peach
1 slightly green banana (the best!)
Trail Mix (apricots, Kashi Heart2Heart + Cashew Granola Clusters)

Apple Cinnamon Go Go Squeez: All you cinnamon fiends out there, this IS the applesauce for you.
It is uber-cinnamony, and DELICIOUS.  I ate this one first, and it’s going to be hard to beat.

Apple Peach Go Go Squeez: Another good flavor.  However, I ate it after the cinnamon,
and although it was good, it stood no chance to be quite honest.  The peach flavor was perfect though –
identifiable without being overwhelming.

Speaking of applesauce…you have until Tuesday morning at 8am to enter my giveaway to win some of your own Go Go Squeez applesauce (5 boxes of 4 packets of each flavor).

After working for about 3 hours, I am now home, munching on carrots + PB and realizing I still have a bit left to accomplish before I can go to bed.  Before I go, I wanted to mention I went to the eye doctor this morning.  I have been suffering from really bad migraines for the past couple months (not good when you are a blogger – hello!), and I am getting new glasses!  So, sorry for lack of commenting/reading/responding to all your wonderful e-mails – the nighttime seems to especially aggravate my poor head (which it is doing right now).  Hopefully I shall be seeing clearer than ever by the end of the week!

Anybody out there have good tips for food photos when the lighting is crappy? The past week of rain + minimal sunlight at night and in the morning is killing me!

Jenn October 26, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Aside from investing in a photo studio with umbrellas, studio lighting and several assistants…you could try getting one of those twisty bedside lamps and put your food underneath it? Macgyver might use a flashlight off a white wall to brighten things up!

Lizzy October 26, 2009 at 9:41 pm

new glasses?? love this my fab girl! i can’t wait to see what they look like! your gonna look hot!

Allison (Eat Clean Live Green) October 26, 2009 at 9:45 pm

I love that table cloth! :)

I’ve been turning the flash off, and putting my camera on something flat (a mock tripod), for crappy lighting. It’s a pain though!

Madeline @ GreensAndJeans October 26, 2009 at 9:46 pm

yay for tables! I actually have no tables in my apartment, only tops of dressers and bookcases. Seeing as I usually eat lying on the floor, this hasn’t been an issue… Double yay for new glasses! My mom works at an eyewear boutique so thanks to her I have a major glasses/sunglasses obsession and I actually have a separate basket full of them.

Kristen October 26, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Oh, man. These short and overcast days are killing my photos!! I wish I had some tips for you!

I’m excited for you that you got a table!

Anne K. October 26, 2009 at 10:07 pm

Yay for the dining room table! And you have such delicious food to grace it with, too ;) Love those pumpkin oats

April October 26, 2009 at 10:09 pm

That’s so exciting about your table!

That salad looks so good! I need a filling salad recipe.. what all was in it?

And I’m sorry about your poor eyes! I hope they feel better!

Jenna October 26, 2009 at 10:34 pm

i think it is so cool how each of your rooms in your house are themed!

Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries October 26, 2009 at 10:56 pm

Your Moroccan creation looks divine! I miss Morocco–couscous with golden raisins galore!!!–and, uh, trekking through the dessert on donkeys. That was fun….

Mama Pea October 26, 2009 at 11:04 pm

My girlies love that applesauce, and its so convenient! I’m thinking we’ll have our stew mid-week…I’ve got to perfect my recipe!!!

BroccoliHut October 26, 2009 at 11:33 pm

LOL Holly you ARE me. When my parents decided to purchase a beach house while I was in middle school, I seized the opportunity to come up with a decorating plan for each room. You guessed it–each one had a “theme.” LOVE IT.
Also love your lunch–major yums there!

Kate October 26, 2009 at 11:51 pm

i feel your pain on the crappily lit photos. freaking winter in the upper midwest. and to think it will only get worse in a week with the big daylight savings switch. booooo! aside from jumping ship to a warmer climate, i don’t know what to do either,

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) October 26, 2009 at 11:56 pm

You’re post about a dining room table is reminiscent of one of mine from about 4 weeks ago. Yes, for the last FIVE years my husband and child and I had been eating on our laps on our couch. Moved into new house over labor day and finally got a table. And I love it too :) I hope you love yours! Cant wait to see pics!

Morroccan salad looks awesommmmmme! Totally my speed!

Cindy October 27, 2009 at 12:23 am

OH, easy…when the light is crappy…this is what I do.

wait for the light to be NOT crappy.
cuz when the light is crappy…it just IS.

i wish i had better tip. I have NO idea. I have the same “night photos” problems.

YEAH for dining room tables….

Whole Body Love October 27, 2009 at 12:52 am

I am so ready to witness the throwdown!

Lynn @ The Actors Diet October 27, 2009 at 1:08 am

i can understand the excitement of a dining room table. my apt. is such that there is no place for one; there is a little table in our kitchen, but it’s too depressing to actually sit and eat at.

Maya October 27, 2009 at 2:48 am

I had Materne applesauce in Belgium! I didn’t know their products were available in the U.S., I love the fruit combos.

Nicole October 27, 2009 at 4:23 am

I get migraines too, and they suck!!! I’m so sorry, and I hope that you are feeling better by the end of the week! As for bad lighting, I have no clue. Sometimes, I have to hold my food up to one of our track lights. Or I have to use the dreaded flash. It depends on the lighting. No tips!

Did you get that Moroccan stew recipe from Clean Eating Magazine? It looks so familiar!!

Diana October 27, 2009 at 5:06 am

Yay dining room table :)
Sorry you’ve been having headaches.. it does suck especially when you HAVE to spend a lot of time in front of the computer.

That lunch looks so good!

Also, when I don’t have light I just basically try to use the light sources I do have available. Artificial light is not awesome but sometimes it’s the only thing available. :)

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is October 27, 2009 at 5:43 am

I love that each room in your house is themed. I do the same. I can’t really help with the camera question…my photos aren’t the best either!

Lauren October 27, 2009 at 6:12 am

Ah, okay now I understand where my random craving for veggie stew came from. I knew I saw this on someone’s page ealier and I have been looking for the recipe ever since! Yay, so happy it was you!! :) I am totally making this next week.

Enjoy your week darling.

Abby October 27, 2009 at 6:27 am

I have themes in my house too: kitchen=make food, living room=couch where I eat food, bedroom=place I sleep until I wake up to make and eat food. But I do feel super fancy when I eat at my dining room table :) It’s super nice and came with the house, but if it didn’t, I’m pretty sure I still wouldn’t have one!

katherine October 27, 2009 at 6:49 am

Congrats on the new table and that moroccan dish looks divine!!!

Jason Sandeman October 27, 2009 at 6:53 am

Congrats on the new table! I am looking forward to your Morrocan throwdown. Let the best one win! (You of course!)

As for lighting, all I can suggest are mirrors. I take my photos with my blackberry, so I am not sure what to tell you exactly!

Susan October 27, 2009 at 7:12 am

Yay for dining room table! I <3 Matisse and a couple of his prints up in my place too :)

I hear ya on the crappy lighting! It's both dark now at breakfast and dinner for me, and the lights in my apartment suck. In my old place, I always took photos under my oven light, but I don't have that here.

Kailey (SnackFace) October 27, 2009 at 7:23 am

Congrats for having a grown-up dinner table! Woohoo! I don’t have one, I have a bistro-style little set-up. That I never use.

Oooh can we see new glasses? Please? OK, so maybe I just miss your face.

I hope you have a FANTASTIC Tuesday, my love!

Ruthie October 27, 2009 at 7:34 am

Where the heck is the picture of the table?

I made bulgar and quinoa last night. Ewww dry and nasty! Needed water to choke a bite down! What did I do wrong?

Lara (Thinspired) October 27, 2009 at 7:37 am

Ooooh..do we get a photo of the new table?! I’m in the market for one myself! And LOVE that tablecloth…what a cool story :)

Justine October 27, 2009 at 7:42 am

Man I hope you get your eye/head problem figured out :).

I need to get on the ball and fix me up some pumpkin gluten free cereal but I have a shizz load of squash to use up.

Tips for dark day?? Hold food under a light.

Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats October 27, 2009 at 7:48 am

Eek – sorry about the migraines! Those are one of the most frustrating and scary things…hate ’em. Hope the new glasses sit-u will make everything a little bit better for ya!

Hmmm – I recently stumbled on a “flourescent” light setting, on my manual setting on my digi cam. It’s seems to help when taking pictures under my bright kitchen light in the dark a.m.!

Emily (Healthy Fit Mama) October 27, 2009 at 7:54 am

I love that you have themes in your rooms! Such a great idea.

Can’t wait to check out the new glasses. I hope they help your migraines!

Katie October 27, 2009 at 8:12 am

Delicious looking layers!! Yumm.

Glad you are getting new glasses, I hope that helps! As far as the light goes, I am so with you. I’m just banking on daylight savings time ending the sun will actually be up for breakfast.

Andrea@WellnessNotes October 27, 2009 at 8:31 am

I love the tablecloth! And I love your lunch. It’s going on my “must make” list… :)

Matt October 27, 2009 at 8:31 am

New glasses? Nice. Are you getting a new perscription or new frames all together?

brandi October 27, 2009 at 8:32 am

i love all the themes, and yay for the new table! I can’t wait to see what your kitchen theme will be :)

I hope the new glasses help! Migraines are no fun.

Whit October 27, 2009 at 9:11 am

When the lighting is crappy I just up the blue in Picasa. It normally makes a crapola pic turn out ok. I love the themes in your house. CUTE.

Evan Thomas October 27, 2009 at 9:12 am

I dig the provencal theme. Provence is definitely one of my favorite places to visit(especially for the food!)
When I need to use flash, I back up and zoom as much as possible, and go in and play with it in Windows Pictures

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) October 27, 2009 at 11:04 am

hooray for grown-up furniture! and girl, i know ALL about headaches + computers + eye issues. i have to wear contacts + reading glasses at the ripe old age of 25, but they help! hope you feel better soon :-) Nothin’ worse than headaches and nausea when you’re trying to catch up on google reader.

Low October 27, 2009 at 11:12 am

Yay for your new table! LOVE that table cloth! Hope you’re enjoying the new PT gig.

Morgan @ Life After Bagels October 27, 2009 at 11:40 am

I eat off of tv trays, how do you like that! hahaha

Erin October 27, 2009 at 1:05 pm

congrats on getting a table! Big kid purchase! Layers of stew are a heart-warming sight.

devan geselle October 27, 2009 at 2:05 pm

yay! for dining tables :D haha.
awesome eats! love that moroccon lunch of yours! yummy :)

Hmm. lighting.. Definatly use an overhead light.. any kind of light.. just something that shines down ontop of whatever you are photographing!

Mellissa October 27, 2009 at 3:54 pm

I have a similar theme at my house, pieces from Africa, Peru, Thailand, Mexico, Laos, France, Amsterdam, Spain, Egypt, Nicaragua and the list goes on and on :)

emily (a nutritionist eats) October 27, 2009 at 4:01 pm

I love that you have themes – that is so great! I have been having major problems with pictures too recently, partly due to the fact it has been cloudy, partly it is always dark whenever I’m at home :( depressing.

Faith October 27, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Congrats on your new table! Your Moroccan Stew Throwdown sounds like so much fun! Hope you’re feeling better, migranes are horrible!

janetha October 27, 2009 at 4:29 pm

oh my gosh i love how your rooms are themed! that makes so much sense. you HAVE to do a vlog of you house. it is necessary now that you have revealed your themey nature. oh i do love me some cinnamon! i will have to be on the lookout for that stuff!!

ugh, my office has the worst lighting. florescent lights are no bueno for food blogging. no advice from me senorita.

i love you!

jessica October 27, 2009 at 5:42 pm

That is NOT nerdy at all!!! Invite me overrrr :) I wanna see this adorable place you’ve got!

I’m really into the france-themed dining room. That is so, so fun!

And I kInd of want you to make me a batch of your pumpkin oats….just sayin’

Peanut Butter Bliss October 27, 2009 at 5:51 pm

girlie your oats always make me so hungry, even though I just ate :D love ’em.

Chelsea @ (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) October 27, 2009 at 6:02 pm

Your comment regarding the coffee mug made me guffaw. I would love to hear the back story on how you came to be the owner of such an item.

Also, that tablecloth is pretty darn gorgeous. I’m getting a table this weekend too, I’m so excited! I’m sick of using my coffee table and its magazines as place mats.

Jenny October 28, 2009 at 4:18 pm

aw the new table will be so perf when I come over for our candelight dinner! :)
