Let’s have a toast!

Kanye West-style.

Yeah, that’s right.

Did you catch his epic performance at the VMA’s? If not, no worries. Just know that instead of toasting to the douchebags, jerkoffs and scumbags like my homeboy Mr. West, I am going to toast to a few things that deserve a lil’ recognition in my Everythingtarian life.

Side note: While conducting research for this post (yes, research!), I discovered the site Hot Chicks with Douchebags, and it’s awesomely hilarious.

Let’s have a toast to…Three Sisters Cereal!

Several weeks ago, I received three generous bags of their natural, sustainable and environmentally-friendly cereals to review for the blog. Needless to say, I was even more excited when I found out they are based in my homeland of Minnesota.

The first bag I ripped open was the Marshmallow Oaties

For the sake of honesty, let’s just call these “healthified” Lucky Charms, kapeesh?

Anyways, I’ve scarfed the entire bag faster than I ate the Great Harvest chocolate chip cookie post-dinner tonight (which was indeed more calories than my actual meal – priorities, people) because in fact, Lucky Charms was one of my favorite cereals growing up. If you must know, my absolute favorite was Froot Loops, followed by Lucky Charms and rounded out by Kix.

But I digress.

I ate my first bowl and immediately refilled it twice.

Crunchy, marshmallowy and addicting.

Then, I experimented with them atop a deliciously fruity smoothie this morning…

1/2 cup pineapple juice
1/2 cup organic skim milk
1 cup frozen mixed berries
1/2 small banana
Three Sisters Marshmallow Oaties cereal
drizzle of sunflower seed butter

Most often, I’ve been popping handfuls of these oaties at my work desk.

I don’t think I would buy them on the regular (not as filling or nutritionally-packed as I would like in my morning cereal), but for a reminiscent treat of my childhood every once in awhile, I love them.

Let’s give our second toast to…Dr. Zevia!

As I mentioned yesterday, lovely Lauren sent me a six-pack in the mail, and the only flavor I had yet to try was the Dr. Zevia (a.k.a. Dr. Pepper). Dare I say that it’s now my favorite flavor?

Let’s also give a toast to…my new collection of Ball jars!

I love how simple and classic they are.

Plus, they are perfect for holding bulk items for oneĀ (from l to r): red lentils, brown rice, wheat bran, walnuts, stevia, quinoa, almond meal, nooch, wheatberries, sunflower seeds, oats and shredded unsweetened coconut.

Most importantly, they make me happy.

Let’s give our last, and most important, toast to…my Uncle Tommie Timbertoes!

It’s his birthday today.

Aside from Daddy E and Mama E (pictured above), he is one of the best people I know.

In commemoration of his entering this world 50-some years ago, I leave you with this droplet of inspiration from Uncle Tommie Timbertoes himself…

It’s not what you have, it’s what YOU is. If you have a big house and lose it, isn’t YOU still there? If you have a good job and lose it, isn’t YOU still there? If you have a child and lose it, isn’t YOU still there? If you lose a finger or an arm or an eye, isn’t YOU still there? Find the YOU that’s still there, and there is where YOU is.

How’s that for a transition between starting with douchebags and ending with deep self-reflection?

That’s just YOU.

I mean me?

My host mom in France use Ball jars, as does my dad… when I got my first apartment in college, they were my first purchase. Sadly they had to stay behind, but now I reuse every single jar (mostly pickle and nut butters) to stuff my bulk goods in. I love it.

I always had such an internal dilemma about Fruit Loops vs. Lucky Charms. Usually we had both on hand though, so I’d have a bowl of each.

Mama Pea September 22, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Yes, let’s toast!

My pregame meal before every college basketball game was Lucky Charms and purple grape juice.

I think red wine is just an upgrade and now I need to get that cereal and make the cycle complete!

I’m about to reveal a secret that I feel may ruin our friendship- I HATE Lucky Charms. The marshmallows in them make me gag. On the plus side, your mom is so adorable it makes my teeth hurt.

Oh I used to love lucky charms too!! They were my fave! I used to actually pick all the marshmallows out alot too! My fave part! I need to try this cereal!

Love the ending on this post, well said girl, as always : )

Happy Birthday to your Uncle!!!!!!

I love the “Healthy” versions of these kids cereals. I haven’t ever seen 3 sisters though. But I do love lucky charms. Such memories. Did you use to pick out all the marshmallows and just eat a bowl of them? Haha, okay maybe that was just me. ;)

Glad you like the Zevia. :) <3 you miss holly!

I recently tried Annie’s bunnies cereal and it tasted straight up like Trix. Do they even make Trix cereal anymore? It was fruity and delicious and colored with purple carrot juice! I don’t think the Trix rabbit could say the same. I’ll have to try that cereal I do miss me some Lucky Charms.

Happy birthday to your uncle!

I loved Kanye’s performance, not gonna lie. And I loved this post! The faux lucky charms made me literally drool/go back to a simpler time when I didn’t even know what HFCS was and ate my cereal with innocent glee. I miss those days.

Happy Birthday to Uncle Tommie!

Sami September 23, 2010 at 9:28 am

lucky charms! i remember those days…i went from once picking out all the marshmallows to enjoying the sugary cereal part better. not sure what caused the change? still a little baffled. regardless, three sisters is pretty genius to bring back a childhood fave “healthified”! :) i’m lovin’ me some dr. zevia, too! the other dr. (pepper) has to be jealous ;)

Katie September 23, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Oh man, I want some Kix! My mom never let me have sugar cereal growing up, buy my grandma’s house was always stocked with Kix. I miss that. I don’t even think Kix are that sugary, are they?? Oh well…

Happy birthday Timbertos! (Side note: my father-in-law’s nickname is “Timmy” or “Timbertos” as well. What an odd coincidence, no??!)

emily (a nutritionist eats) September 23, 2010 at 1:34 pm

Loving those wise words!
I tried that cereal a while ago – can’t remember which variety I had, but it was GOOD!

Megan (Braise the Roof) September 23, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Haha, I love it. Full circle, man. :) Those are some wise words!

Virginia @YtotheUmmy September 23, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Aww, you look just like yo momma! :D I get told that all that time, and I’ve always wondered…does that mean that I’m going to kind of look like her when I’m older? Actually, people usually just say “you look like YOUR MOTHER” not “YO MOMMA.” that’s the sort of thing that’s really only aimed at me by my younger brother’s silly band loving friends…

Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) September 23, 2010 at 5:23 pm

I adore Ball jars. They make me 100% happy too. :D

glidingcalm September 23, 2010 at 6:20 pm

loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee marshmallow cereal!

FABBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB POST.

Rachael September 23, 2010 at 6:41 pm

Marshmellow oaties is fun to say :)
Also, chiming in late, but I hear you on the nail-biting. I’m a fiend – i often have to wear gloves to bed, as I will bite and pick in my sleep. Waking up to bloody stumps? Not so great.
My partner has threatened to leave me before over this issue – something about the pick, pick, pick noise I make at night should the gloves come off. Very sexy.

Lynn @ The Actors Diet September 26, 2010 at 12:20 pm

so weird – i’ve been craving lucky charms all week!

I had to check out Hot Chicks With Douchbags once you mentioned it. You’re spot on… it’s hilarious! Now there’s even a book :-)
