Let’s Hear It For the Boy

by Holly on March 8, 2010

As promised from my last post…

Remember that baking extravaganza I was talking about?

It started with a batch of No Pudge Brownies (yes, made from a box).  All you have to do is add yogurt. GENIUS. They were totally super fudgy and moist, which is exactly how I like mine.

Then it progressed on to a batch of VeggieGirl-inspired Almond Joy Blondies!  Almost vegan (I only had plain yog on hand), these buggers had dark chocolate chips, coconut and almonds.  Amazing.

And both made for the perfect dessert to watch the Oscars!

Booyakasha.

That’s my new fave word, by the way.  I couldn’t have been happier to have seen all the people who DESERVED to win, actually win!  I swear that never happens.  Props to Kathryn Bigelow on being the first female to ever win best director, Ben Stiller for donning that hideous Avatar make-up and Doogie Howser Neil Patrick Harris for that stylish opening number.

My favorite, favorite part about the Oscars?

The fashion, obv.

My absolutely fave of the night was Maggie Gyllenhaal.  That woman is not afraid of pattern and color, and I love her for it.  My 2nd fave was Sandra Bullock, who I am convinced I would be friends with in real life.  She actually looked like an Oscar statue last night (in a good way).  And last, Rachel McAdams.  I want her dress. Now.

Anyways, in addition to the Oscar party, I also got a chance to meet up with reader Alison for some coffee yesterday afternoon, which was quite lovely.  She was incredibly sweet, and we happily chatted for almost an hour and a half.  She also brought me a lil’ present, which included this…

NUTTZO (!!!)  It’s a blend of peanuts, cashews, flax seeds, hazelnuts, almonds, brazil nuts, sunflower seeds and salt – not to mention it’s all organic.

But how did it taste?

So good. Alison said it tasted “flaxy,” which made me nervous.  But I loved it!  The only thing was it has actual chunks of nuts in it, so it wasn’t exactly the most spreadable.  However, I bet it will be delish on oatmeal!

Lunch + snacks weren’t too exciting today, and I was kind of crabby at work for a myriad of important and not-so-important reasons.  In other words, no pics, except for this…

That blondie definitely helped ease the crabbiness :).

After work however, I was determined to start day 1 of half-marathon training out on the right foot (no pun intended).  I ran two miles (with a 5-minute warm-up walk + cool down walk) on the treadmill, and then met my friend Steph at a 60-minute spin class, where I was reminded once again why exercise is my Rx.

I was in the zone.

Seriously, I didn’t even chat with Steph (which we normally do throughout class).  I sweated everything out, and by the time the 50-minute mark rolled around and Let’s Hear It For the Boy blasted from the stereo – my mood had completely turned around. I guess Footloose endorphin flows will do that to ya, eh?

Then, I walked home from the gym and chatted with my dear Thomas, who I taught with in Thailand.  I j’adore this boy, which improved my mood even more.

I protein-ed things up with a two-egg puff (sprinkled with garlic salt + nutritional yeast) when I got home…

Then proceeded to make up for the 800 calories+ I burned tonight with a massive pasta dinner…

Whole wheat penne, roasted garlic + herb tomato sauce, 1 handful of spinach and a sprinkle of nutritional yeast.  Dominated by yours truly.

Speaking of boys, let’s hear it for my M.F.H. (ahem, my future husband) at the Oscars last night…

It’s probably a good thing the chances of us ever meeting are zilch, otherwise I am pretty sure he would start singing, “Let’s Hear it For the Stalker.”

I was just checking in with you before bed. Did you know Maggie Gyllenhall is my breastfeeding hero? She NIP (nursed in public) her bigger baby right in front of papparazzi – gotta love that!

Your blondies look awesome! MMM MMM.

I’m glad you like the nutzo.

Your exercise sounds fabulous! I had a great treadmill workout while watching last week’s biggest loser which was sort of a downer (in a lame way) but somehow I rocked out 600cal which is more than my norm. I totally agree that exercise is the rx. In fact I didn’t mention it but Exercise (and eating healthy) is truly what keeps my brain healthy :)

Matt March 8, 2010 at 9:16 pm

I LOVE Nuttzo! They sent me a free sample and I finished it in a few days! I would totally buy more, but it is PRICEY!

rebecca lustig March 8, 2010 at 9:18 pm

1. i actually like no pudge brownies– who woulda thought!
2. LOVED all of their dresses. And I swear, Sandra gets better looking with age! ha

Amy B @ Second City Randomness March 8, 2010 at 9:22 pm

I need to acquire some Nuttzo. Like- right now.

And I am such a sucker for blondies- I’ve usually gone with a reeses/snickers combo, but an almond joy inspired blondie? It’s next on my list to try!!!

Maggie @ Fit.Fun.Food March 8, 2010 at 9:30 pm

I’m really enjoying your blog, girl! Congrats on the intense workout! It always feels so good to wear your body out and then refuel.

Also, I love Maggie Gyllenhaal! She always has that adorable sarcastic smile on her face. The kind of actress you can imagine being best friends with! Have you seen her in The Secretary?

Lizzy March 8, 2010 at 9:37 pm

omg no pudge brownies are my favorite! they are amazing and i love that fact that all you add is yogurt and it makes them soooooooo fudgy! yummm

katie March 8, 2010 at 9:42 pm

i LOVE THOSE BROWNIES! seriously, i cannot believe they are so healthy and so moist!

Susan March 8, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Those blondies look AMAZING. I’ve been meaning to try a Veggie Girl recipe for ages but I’m afraid of my lack of self-control…

What a bossy girl you are, workin’ it out like that at the gym! Jake likes to work out too I hear. When you guys meet; you’ll have something to talk about ; )

And I 100% agree on your Oscar fashion picks.

LindsayRuns March 8, 2010 at 10:57 pm

No pudge fudge are my favorites! And with eyes like that I get the stalking, I’m married to a pair of eyes like that and I love them! And the hubby they are attached to, also. ;)

Tay March 8, 2010 at 11:15 pm

I most definitely have his pic on my blog post today as well :-) Best dressed there for sure!! And I’ve been waiting to buy that Nutzo for a special day. It’s pricy – but I want to try it out so badly!!

Killian March 8, 2010 at 11:16 pm

I loved the Oscar clothes too! Did you see Tom Ford’s suit? *WOW* Nuttzo looks amazing I want to order some!

Love the blog :)
Killian

PS. Just to let you know, I heard Booyakasha means ‘Kill the white man’ in like swahili or some African language. Just thought you should know :)

Madeline - Greens and Jeans March 8, 2010 at 11:17 pm

I think I would wear Rachel McAdams’ dress to the grocery store if I could.

susan (stepping off the coaster) March 9, 2010 at 12:41 am

oh my geez… go look at the title of my most recent post. clearly we were on the same page!!!

i am severely baking impaired… will you come do it for me????

i’m gonna email you about the job dilemma… i need advice from my favorite everythingtarian!!

ellie March 9, 2010 at 12:49 am

Aww, he would be lucky to be stalked by you. Especially if you left brownies around for him. Those look awesome :D

Booyakasha = best.word.ever. Are you an Ali G fan? He says that all the time. Amongst other stuff ;) Hehe. I *heart* Ali G.

Glad your run went well!

Erica March 9, 2010 at 5:08 am

baking & exercise- two things that MAJORLY de-stress me! So sweet of your reader to bring you the nuttzo- I’ve really been wanting to try that goodness. I didn’t watch any of the Oscars! I was so exhausted from our trip that I literally passed out Sunday night :) The dresses were quite fab though. Hope your week goes well

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is March 9, 2010 at 5:42 am

I LOVE no pudge brownies – I make the single serving ones all the time!

Katie @ Health for the Whole Self March 9, 2010 at 5:58 am

Exercise is definitely the best medicine! I actually know someone who is working on getting over an addiction by replacing substances with exercise…I really think it’s going to work for her!

Chelsea @ (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) March 9, 2010 at 5:59 am

Those brownies look amazzzing! I’ll have to do first-hand investigative blog research on them (i.e, make them and eat them).

Way to go on the run/spin! Reading this has affirmed my decision to seriously kick things up a notch at the gym this morning.

Have a great week lady!

Jenna March 9, 2010 at 7:12 am

Mmm brownies look delish! i wanna try Nutzzo soo bad-glad ya liked it!
jenna

Heather March 9, 2010 at 8:04 am

OMG.

1. Did you see Charlize Theron’s dress? I think she normally looks super glam, but her dress was horrid. I’m kind of bummed Sandra Bullock won for Best Actress (was rooting for Gabourey Sidibe because Precious was AMAZING, and Sandra’s role has been time and time again but whatever) BUT her dress and her acceptance speech made me forget that.

2. RACHEL MCADAMS MIGHT BE DATING JAKE. I might be okay with this because I would gladly marry both of them.

3. BOOYAKASHA. I used to be obsessed with Da Ali G show and I would say that all the time…time to bring it back, I think.

Naomi(onefitfoodie) March 9, 2010 at 8:08 am

jake is SUPER cute and his sis look GEORGEOUS! I also though demi moore looked strikingly fabulous, it must be all that ashton goodness she has ;)

rachel mcadams, i think I would marry her if I could, she is so stunning and she looked amazing. I have to say ryan reynolds also looked so goodddd (he always does though!!)

those no pudge brownies look SO fudgy! I am such a moisty, fudgy person also! I hate the corners that are crispy and too well done! I think I need to pick up a box next time I hit up trader joes!

Kacy March 9, 2010 at 8:35 am

As soon as Lent concludes, I am officially making no pudge brownies. Holy yum!

I was obsessed with Vera Farmiga’s dress, it was so high fashion. And Sandy’s hair was to die for. Loved it.

I need to get my butt to some spin classes, I just fear the soreness that I get for days after..

The pasta looks uh-mazing! Have a good day girl!

Therese March 9, 2010 at 9:31 am

I’ve always wondered if no pudge brownies were good. Diet and brownie were two things I was convinced couldn’t be mixed.

I want to jump in your hand alongside that blondie. Although I am six feet tall, it could get a bit crowded :)

samantha March 9, 2010 at 10:04 am

rumor has it that……… jakeypoo and rachel mcadams are DATING. i die.

those blondies look out of control, me want. unfortunately i can’t bake because then i eat the whole pan! and also have to clean up the kitchen.

Emily (A Nutritionist Eats) March 9, 2010 at 10:46 am

I need those almond joy blondies in my life ASAP!!!!

Did you ever see Jake in Madtown a few years ago? My friend is also obsessed and has a picture with him :) (I can’t remember why he was there….)

Lauren @ Eater not a runner March 9, 2010 at 11:00 am

Nuttzo is SO amazing! I also love maggie gyllenhaal. Amazing.

Maya March 9, 2010 at 11:33 am

I loved Rachel’s dress, too! Seems there was a little Matisse motif going on. Diggin it.

I am TOTALLY planning on making Veggie Girl’s blondies soon! With the peanut butter filled pretzels I bought expressly for such a purpose over the weekend. I guess the great minds thing is true, right?

Maya March 9, 2010 at 11:34 am

I meant to also add that I totally laughed out loud when you said “let’s hear it for the stalker.” Truth.

Teri [a foodie stays fit] March 9, 2010 at 12:44 pm

I.100%.Love.Jake.G.

Katie March 9, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Ooh, I’m all over that baking action! I made No Pudge with walnuts & bananas once (Chunky Munky Pudgy Wudgy, if you will)… so good! I’ve had great success with all of Miss VG’s recipes, and those blondies look pretty fab.

SO JEALOUS OF THE NUTTZO, but so happy you had a good run and spin! I’m scheduled for a 2 miler this evening… for some reason late workouts just aren’t working for me anymore.

Katie March 9, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Ahh so many good things! I’ve gotta try nutzo…I like my nut butter CHUNKY. And I love the taste of flax – so, win, win. Also Jake G. is so dang gorgeous – I hope you DO meet him and he falls in love with you, and then you can introduce me to him. Also, blondies + kick butt exercise – you just typified my favorite kind of day. :-)

Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers March 9, 2010 at 1:40 pm

holy guacamole those brownies look phenomenal. & i agree – i LOVE rachel mcadams! so classy.

Evan Thomas March 9, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Yes! I love NuttZo. It’s so sweet but has NO SUGAR

April March 9, 2010 at 3:55 pm

That peanut butter sounds delicious! Is it worth buying?

And I love the sound of your egg puff. The name in general sounds adorable!

Susan March 9, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Gaaah, your comment totally reminded me that you wanted to chat last night! Will you be around Wednesday evening?

Doctors should really start prescribing spin class in depressed patients. Best mood enhancer there is!!! :D Now I have Let’s Hear it For the Boy stuck in my head, as well as images of Kevin Bacon in tight jeans…

Heart ya Holly! Have fun at salsssa tonight! (it’s tonight, right?)

Jenny March 9, 2010 at 5:10 pm

did you notice Jakie-boy was flying el solo at the awards? you better strike while the iron’s hot, lady!

Gabriela (froyolover) March 9, 2010 at 7:17 pm

Holy YUM – amazing pics!
I´m sure Nuttzo tastes AWESOME! It´s such a famous product all over blog-world… :)
Beautiful creations, by the way! You´re talented, girl ;)
Have an amazing Wednesday!
Brazilian XOXO´s,

Anne March 9, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Ooh, the blondies look fabulous! I definitely need to try that Nutzo. It sounds so yummy!

Gracie @ Girl Meets Health March 9, 2010 at 8:22 pm

Ahhh I totally know what you mean about being in “the zone” with exercise. I haven’t been there in a while, though :X That’s why I so badly want to start taking classes! Oh, and your baked goods + pasta look BALLIN!

Jess March 9, 2010 at 8:33 pm

You have been eating some pretty darn delish foods. Those blondies look especially amaze.

<3 jess

Whole Body Love March 9, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Is the Nutzo comparable to Naturally More? I am a Nt More fanatic but I think Nutzo may be cheaper.

Kristie March 9, 2010 at 10:40 pm

You just MADE my night with that retro music classic. If it weren’t almost midnight and everyone else in my household weren’t sleeping I would be turning this up fullblast and having my own mad dance party RIGHT now. I guess it’ll have to wait for tomorrow ;)

That blondie would sure perk ME up a bit. But nothing, NOTHING beats a good sweat sesh for a complete mood lifter. I can be in the most blah mood ever but if I can force myself to get off my butt and get some good exercise I can’t help but be in a better mood no matter what. Love it.

And seriously, love that song. It’s going on my Ipod ASAP.

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) March 10, 2010 at 6:07 am

I’ve always thought Sandra Bullock and I would get along in real life too. She seems so down to earth and great. And I love that she’s not afraid to make fun of herself. That shows great character, in my opinion. :D

Totally love No Fudge Pudge brownies! Yum!

Cindy March 10, 2010 at 9:58 am

that title has me singing the entire Footloose album….cuz I had that Cassette tape too….jeez.

I’m old.

loved your entire post. the food…the glam…that word…all of it.

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) March 10, 2010 at 6:45 pm

Nice workout, lady! You are going to ROCK that 1/2 marathon.

Also, I love nutzo! I have eaten like half a jar (no joke) today.

Jessica March 10, 2010 at 10:25 pm

GET IT GIRL!!!!! That’s what I wanna see!!

After reading that you did a run AND spin, I was like nahh homegirl better eat up after all that….and i’m glad to see that you did :)

That pasta…and the breakfast look amaze!!! I wanna try nutzo so badly but it was 12 bucks at the last place i found it! That’s just WRONG!!!!

Hope the crabbiness is gone, and I lurrrrve Sandra B, and Rachel McAdams (and their dresses)! So much.
