Lies + Truths

What you get is not always what you see.  Or, as in the case of this blog, what you see is not always what you get. What do I mean by my Saturday morning cryptic words? Let me debunk this week of craziness by dispelling the lies and setting the truth straight…

LIE: I couldn’t taste the spinach in this smoothie in a bowl (a.k.a. SIAB) at all.

TRUTH: Let’s be real, I could definitely taste the spinach, but (a) I needed the veggies (after the previous night’s beer), and (b) the smoothie was still DEE-LISH-USS! By the way, I am totally hesitant of people who say you can’t taste the spinach at all.  I believe that’s kind of a lie – I swear I can always taste it!

1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1/4 cup orange juice
2 tbsp. vanilla brown rice protein powder
as much spinach as I could fit in my mini-blender
1/4 cup Raspberry Galaxy Granola

LIE: I finished my to-do list last night.

TRUTH: How much more of a blatant lie do you want?  Out of this list, I successfully completed three things: (1) picking up a baby book for a baby shower this weekend, (2) buy my friend Jamie her belated b-day present and (3) BOOK A FLIGHT TO BANFF!  Yeah, that’s right.

Susan and I have been planning a week of hiking, biking and camping in Banff, British Columbia, Canada for a couple months now, and I finally booked my plane ticket!  My bank account may hate me, but I love me.  And, if you are still interested in coming along for what will be a foodie-filled adventure, e-mail me at healthyeverythingtarian@gmail.com or Susan at thegreatbalancingact@gmail.com.

I take that back, I finished four things on the list. I went on a killer 6.5 mile run last night – it wasn’t yoga, but my Saturday morning is now far more relaxing now that I got that out of the way.

LIE: I love juice.

TRUTH: Juice and I are in a love-hate relationship.  Most of the time, I just want coffee or Diet Coke. True fact. However, every once in an everythingtarian while, juice is EXACTLY what I want.

LIE: Raw carrots make for an excellent lunch addition.

TRUTH: Sometimes raw carrots make me so incredibly nauseous, I feel like I want to hurl.  Does anybody else have this problem? I Googled it (naturally), but all the Web sites told me its either in my head or just a weird thang my body does.  By the way, this lunch also included a peanut butter blondie and leftover Bulgur, Spinach and Toasted Walnut Pancakes.  Yummo.

LIE: I’ve been taking a lot of time this week to just relax and do the things I want to do.

TRUTH: Hola! Clearly, that was another blatant lie.  The truth is this week has been insane. Between work (a sick co-worker and a co-worker going out of town next week = more chaos); attending an awesome lecture by Vandana Shiva, who advocates for non-GMO food and a return to “soil, not oil”; fitting in some workouts; attending to all the other little tasks (i.e. blogging, cooking, errands) and of course, salsa class, free time this week was non-existent.

LIE: I have no food left in my house.

TRUTH: Even when it may appear as though you have “no food in the house,” there is always a junk salad of love to be made out of random ingredients.

1 handful of spinach
1/2 sliced yellow pepper
1/2 cup sliced cucumber
1 crumbled bulgur pancake
handful of walnuts
generous sprinkle of nutritional yeast
balsamic + EVOO

LIE: After eating the lovely sunflower seed butter-topped peanut butter blondie, I set to work on finishing the rest of my to-do list last night.

TRUTH: I may or may not have checked off nada from the list and hung out with Mr. Lawyer instead :).

LIE: My appetite was raging when I woke up this morning.

TRUTH: After a week of inconsistent, odd eating patterns, I think my tumtum is a bit out of whack.  Quite frankly, I wanted coffee more than I wanted food.  Ummm…that ain’t right. So, I compromised.  I devoured a two-egg puff (sprinkled with salt + nutritional yeast) and am going to devote myself to eating less sugar (and ahem, alcohol), more balanced meals and lots of fruits/veggies the next week.

LIE: I have the rest of the day to do whatever I please.

TRUTH: My college roomies are in town, I have a baby shower in about 1.5 hours and this weekend is probably going to involve more food + drinking.  I won’t lie…the truth of it is: I think I’ve spoiled my upcoming week’s goal already.

Give me one lie + one truth of your own…

Lie: There’s nothing more satisfying than going out for a long run on a Saturday morning.

Truth: There’s actually a lot of things more satisfying than schlepping outside and sweating out my life on Saturday monrings, including but not limited to drinking endless cups of coffee, reading the latest issue of Time, and taking my “time” to get around to working out.

Oh, how I wish I could join you lovely ladies in Banff! If I wasn’t uprooting my life as I know it that month (it’s the date of the big coast to coast move), than I’d totally figure out a way to swing this trip!

PS: Kudos on the leftover junk salad, looks phenom!

Mara @ What's For Dinner? March 27, 2010 at 10:17 am

Lie: You’re alone in this carrot thing
Truth: Sometimes i love carrots. Sometimes though, they taste bitter and turn my stomach! It’s not just you!!

and p.s. you have the coolest handwriting!

Erica March 27, 2010 at 10:27 am

Whattt?? I lurve carrots, but we all have those foods that sometimes make us a little ill in the belly. Glad you got some time in with the lawyer friend ;) Have fun with your friends this weekend. You deserve it after such a hectic week.

Lie: I loved teaching Body Pump this morning
Truth: My muscles were wayyy too tired after a heavy teaching load this week, but I faked it through ;)

Julie @SavvyEats March 27, 2010 at 10:28 am

A) I want your handwriting. Seriously, I do.

B) The carrots thing is NOT just you. I packed a bag of them to eat at the airport yesterday, and just couldn’t stomach them.

Sarah (Finding My Balance) March 27, 2010 at 10:31 am

(um, pretend that was cooler than i think it was. okay. great.)

Whitney @ Lettuce Love March 27, 2010 at 10:34 am

Lie: Banff is lame.
Truth: No it’s not! I wish I could join you all but since i just maxed out my vacation with two trips to Colorado this year, I guess I am finished with trips for a while. Banff is totally on my bucket list and I would love to visit.

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is March 27, 2010 at 10:34 am

I can ALWAYS taste the spinach, too!!! UGH, it drives me crazy. Maybe its because I hate veggies, or maybe it’s because I don’t have a vitamix, but not only can I TASTE the spinach, I still get tiny spinach chunks after blending for 5-7 minutes!!!

Leah March 27, 2010 at 10:44 am

I thought I was the only one who got nauseous sometimes from carrots!! I loveee carrots, but I always know when I have too many, because I want to puke…maybe its because they are so high sugar?? I’ve never really researched it haha

Jenna March 27, 2010 at 10:56 am

have fun at the baby shower!! i love going to them :)
Jenna

Ariffa @ Belly Love March 27, 2010 at 10:57 am

lie: I will not be reading blogs instead of studying today
truth: the carrot thing happens to me too! drat

janetha March 27, 2010 at 11:34 am

lie: im coming to canada with you guys!

truth: your hand writing makes me happy, i have about 7 of your recipes on my to make list, and i really want to hear about the steamy details of you and mister L!

Mama Pea March 27, 2010 at 12:01 pm

Lie: green smoothies make me feel warm and fuzzy all over!

Truth: I am frickin’ freezing and on my second cup of coffee, thereby canceling out any health benefits with caffeine and dehydration. Yay me!

Happy weekend!!!

Madeline - Greens and Jeans March 27, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Lie: I am so stoked to go to work on a Saturday!
Truth: I want nothing more than to crawl back into bed and laze the day away

Evan Thomas March 27, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Lie: I hated this post and you’re the most boring blogger(which I spelled blooger) out there

Truth: I think you’re a bit nuts for thinking there’s something about raw carrots, but to each their own :-)

Susan March 27, 2010 at 12:51 pm

Lie: I’m currently polished off my 12 page paper for research methods in psychology.

Truth: I’m reading your fab blog!

I seriously love your posts. The Madison newspapar should give you your own column or something. Like sex and the city but with food. Way more interesting than some of the crap they publish right now! I don’t need to know what to do with the lint in my dryer, thank you very much.

Matt March 27, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Lol I think people say they can’t taste the spinach as an excuse…

Tamara March 27, 2010 at 3:38 pm

I could taste the spinach in Green Monsters the first few times, but now I think I’ve adapted and all I taste are the soy milk and other fruits I put in it. I also hate raw carrots. Not even hummus can save them. Celery too; how on earth can people stand the stuff?

As for my own, let’s see…

Lie: I look forward to weekend dinners because I have the time to make a real three-course sit-down meal.

Truth: After running around all day to the mall, the pet store, the pharmacy, the recycling center and the grocery store, cleaning up a week’s worth of apartment mess and eating pizza for lunch mid-afternoon, the last thing I want to do is start a major culinary endeavor. I see canned soup and rolls in the near future.

Jess March 27, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Lie: Smoothie’s are perfect on a cold day.

Truth: Eat smoothie’s INSIDE!

Loved this post!

Kailey (SnackFace) March 27, 2010 at 5:36 pm

Lie: I’ve been dedicated to working out every day, taking away time that could be spent with my family.

Truth: I’ve been glued to my mom’s side like I’ll never be home again. And MamaJ does not workout.

Lie: I’ve been eating red meat every night.

Truth: I LOVE YOU!

KathyR March 27, 2010 at 8:01 pm

Lie: I am your youngest reader!

Truth: I turned 49 today!

I can taste the spinach in the spinach smoothies, but I like it.

Lauren @ Eater Not a Runner March 27, 2010 at 8:29 pm

I hate raw carrots, so I’m with you on that one.

Molly March 27, 2010 at 8:46 pm

Lie: I love that it’s March 28th in Japan and I’m buried in 5 inches of recently fallen snow and temps dipping down into the 30’s.

Truth: I am extremely envious of MN’s near-70 degree weather and I miss my family, friends, and my desire to work out on a regular basis. Hmmmph.

Can’t wait to hear more about Mr. Lawyer! You go girl!!!

Andrea@WellnessNotes March 27, 2010 at 10:54 pm

Lie: I am totally prepared for spring quarter and get to enjoy spring break.
Truth: I’m sort of freaking out about how much I’ll have to accomplish in a week…

Brilliant post as always! :) Sounds to me things with Mr. Lawyer are moving along… My imagination is going wild! ;)

Happy Sunday!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) March 28, 2010 at 12:09 am

I feel great. Lie. I am coming down with a cold I think.

I changed the layout on my blog today by myself AND started a give away for a French Press!!!! Truth!!!!!

Mimi (Damn the Freshman 15) March 28, 2010 at 1:22 am

Lie: I love my classes! I’m gonna study hard and kick ass on my finals!

Truth: ME WANTZ SUMMER! I do a lot of freelance, which actually PAYS, so I feel more motivated to pursue that. I love my school, but its true usefulness to me is the vast vats of knowledge and resources at my fingertips, more so than the physical classes. But I’ll still work for decent grades…I just don’t really care about a 4.0 anymore.

Totally random, but I LOVE your handwriting! It’s so cute and unique!

Special K March 28, 2010 at 10:18 am

Carrot Recipe:
Shredded half apple, shredded carrot, 2 tablespoon raisins, 2 tablespoons toasted chopped walnuts, in a dressing of 2 tablespoons vinegar, 3 tsp maple/agave syrup, and a drizzle of oil. SUPERB!

Low March 28, 2010 at 10:20 am

Lie: I’m so well rested and zen right now.

Truth: I’m a hot mess! But it’s all good. Such is the life of us fabulous 20 somethings, am I right?!

Yay for another night with Mr. Lawyer. I’d appreciate some deets at some point, Missy :)

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) March 28, 2010 at 12:38 pm

It’s funny…the first time I ate spinach in a smoothie, I totally tasted it. Now I don’t. And that’s not even a lie.

Junk salads are my favorite! Yours looks awesome! :D

Jamie @ Tearaveler March 28, 2010 at 12:52 pm

I may have burnt my tongue one to many times on hot soups to be able to taste spinach in anything… hah

Lie: I love going to Sal’s every weekend with my roommates (it’s the only bar in my little college town).
Truth: I’d much rather have a fun night of drinks and games at home where I don’t have to scream at the top of my lungs to say ‘how are you!’ when I run into a friend. And I have personal bubble issues… drunks rubbing up against me and accidentally splashing their drink on my jeans as I’m minding my own business at the bar just isn’t my idea of fun..

Amy (Up and Running!) March 28, 2010 at 2:02 pm

LIE: I like ‘easy workout’ days.
TRUTH: I HATE easy workout days…I feel lazy and unproductive. Boo.
TRUTH #2: Those PB blondies look so delicious I’m drooling.

J March 28, 2010 at 2:57 pm

I think maybe you can taste the spinach because you put so much into the smoothie….I just put a handful (1/2-1 cup?) and don’t really taste it.

Gabriela March 28, 2010 at 4:26 pm

YAY for everything-suy-the-kitchen-sink salads and PB blondies!
Amazing post, as always ;)
Have a great week, girl!
Brazilian XOXO´s,
Gabriela

Jenny March 28, 2010 at 4:39 pm

I think you may have the market cornered on “dichotomously themed” posts–you’ve really got a knack for them, and they are so clever and funny!

lie: I didn’t spend over $50 stocking up on wine and belgian beer yesterday

truth: i did in fact spend that much, but it was worth it, and made for one heck of a day trip :)

Christina March 28, 2010 at 5:53 pm

hey holly! hope things are going well!! i love the truth lie theme going on here haha….lie: i didnt spend way too much at the bar last night. truth: I had to open up a tab since i dind thave cash and ended up buying shots for all. yes. well not all- but for alot of people haha… oh well- at least we had fun! haha

Katharina March 28, 2010 at 6:26 pm

“My bank account may hate me, but I love me” I LOVE THIS! I think about that whenever I buy things that I didn’t plan for. Actually… for the most part I don’t give those things a second thought lol. ANYWAY, I totally feel ya on the sugar. I had been eating a lot of it and my skin did not agree. I’ve been toning it down. It actually hasn’t been hard to do :)

Let’s see… a lie + a truth… I read my assigned reading for Tuesday. Well okay.. so I started to but I have been putting it off. It’s such a good book though, I just get distracted!!! Hve you read In Cold Blood??

Faith March 28, 2010 at 6:49 pm

Your trip to BC sounds like so much fun! I’m in the process of trying to find a place for Mike and I to camp this summer but it’s kind-of limiting…he insists on “camping” in a house with a full kitchen and bathroom, lol!

I seriously need to make some of those blondies. :)

Molly March 28, 2010 at 7:53 pm

I need to add another truth:
I may be notorious for 1. sleeping in a completely still position on my back while resting my computer on my lap, falling asleep to Friends every night and 2. checking and READING blogs in my sleep, as well as emails and facebook messages. By morning I forget that I did that and have a tendency to lose many read emails in my inbox :-/ Oops.

katie March 28, 2010 at 9:24 pm

DELISH eats girl!!! those blondies look HEAVENLY! especially w. nut butter on top!

Susan March 29, 2010 at 10:56 am

Remember that post wayback when you talked about holding back from accomplishing things? I had a HUGE convo with my mom about the same thing last night. She related it to my anxiety disorder, and panicking at the thought of having to do things. Lists in themselves freak me out. Anyways, kind of off-topic, but your to-do list reminded me of that (and made me freak out a little! :P )

I think I may make those pancakes for my “easter dinner” ;)

Lie – I sent out the Banff e-mail. DRAT. My life is a mess, I’m writing it tonight, promise!!
Truth – We are going to have the time of our lives in Banff!!! Even though I’m stressed at the moment, Banff is totally keeping me going. It’s going to be JUST the vacay we need!! xoxo

Annie March 29, 2010 at 7:51 pm

I am ambivalent about juice. I’d much rather have a diet coke or a cup of tea. :)

Lie: I know what I’ll be doing work-wise in four months.

Truth: no idea. I’m in a fellowship that ends in two months and job prospects are not great. :(

Diana @ frontyardfoodie March 31, 2010 at 8:37 am

hahah, this post cracked me up.

I love love green smoothies and don’t mind if I can taste a difference when there are alot of greens in there. Makes me feel healthy. haha

Brittany April 9, 2010 at 11:57 am

Your Junk Salads crack me up! I need more JUNK in my TRUNK, salads are the bomb!
