May or May Not

Ello loves!

It’s me again…and I may or may not have just drunk (drank?  drinken?) two pints of beer.  And I may or may not be slightly tipsy as I am writing this. No shame people. A lil’ beer never hurt nobody, especially on a thirsty Thursday night.  Because clearly, I am still in college.

This morning started out with a lovely breakfast of sunflower seed butter + banana toast. The best part? I discovered the sunflower seed butter I bought this past weekend has FLAXSEEDS in it.  Short-chain omega-3s, here I come!

P.S. Mondo shout-out to Jess for turning me on to sunflower seed butter – it’s so gooooodddd!

Work was especially crazy today, especially since one of my co-workers was out sick.  Feel better Chris! However, I still managed to find the time to donate blood today.  The American Red Cross comes to our workplace several times a year, and when they do, I make sure to donate.  I’m eligible; I don’t suffer any ill side effects; and SO MANY people need blood transfusions every day…we can’t not help!

Plus, you get some killer snacks after you donate…

Pretzels + juice = every little kid’s dream snack.

Apparently, you do need to eat more after giving blood because 1 pint of blood = 650 calories.  Holla! I always love a good excuse to eat more food.  And not work out.  This giving blood thing really has its advantages…

After my post-donation snack, I was still hungry so I noshed on an orange

Then, I worked like a madwoman until I realized it was 2pm, and I still had not eaten lunch. Tsk tsk. Waiting too many hours between meals is never good.  Since I was too lazy didn’t have time this morning to make a lunch, I may or may not have snuck out of work to grab a Subway veggie sammie + Naked Green Machine juice.

Then I worked away the day and came home STARVING.  I immediately set to work on a recipe I have had my eye on for awhile…Bulgur, Spinach and Toasted Walnut Pancakes!

I don’t even know where to start.  These may or may not have been one of the best recipes I have made in a long time.

There were amazing. Spinach, toasted walnuts, bulgur, orange juice, soy sauce, onion, egg…they all make for one kick arse vegetarian meal.  I was searching for recipes that used bulgur wheat earlier this week, since I had about 1 cup to use up.  Low and behold, this recipe popped up, and I am so glad it did.

I ate three pancakes, then headed off for dranks with Mr. Lawyer.  We had two beers (plus some buttery, salty bar popcorn) each.  Twas’ a lovely evening.

Now, it’s 9:31pm. I have some dishes to do, an apartment to clean, and I am most likely to do none of it. Tomorrow is Friday, and I am PUMPED.

Have you ever donated blood? Yes, see above.

What are you up to this weekend? I have a baby shower for a college roommate, then lots of quality time with my college roomies who are all coming in town for the weekend!!!

Ah, what bulgar bliss! I’ve yet to try the stuff, your recipe has fueled my anticipation to do so.

Glad to hear you had a nice drink sesh with Mr.Lawyer. While I don’t drink anymore, I definitely know how nice it is to enjoy both a good drink and date buzz.

My plans for this weekend involve some outdoor running, movie-going (whaddup, “Greenberg”), and Farmer’s marketing. Have a wonderful weekend lady!

Maggie @ Fit.Fun.Food March 25, 2010 at 10:12 pm

Ooh! Could you make those pancakes with quinoa? I think I’ll try!
Have a great night, girl!

Madeline - Greens and Jeans March 25, 2010 at 10:16 pm

I will choose to read between the lines and throw you a long distance high five.

Nora@LiveLifeEatRight March 25, 2010 at 10:24 pm

I love the idea of bulgar pancakes!

Jessica @ Healthy Exposures March 25, 2010 at 10:38 pm

Those pancakes look KILLER! Must give that recipe a shot.
I’ve never donated blood before, but good for you! I feel bad that I never have :\ Serious needle fear. Not a fan…

Carbzilla March 25, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Hmmmm, I, too, am intrigued and looking forward to hearing how this played out. Good for you for keeping some secrets. :)

katie March 25, 2010 at 10:58 pm

no i never have-but i do hear they give you ballin snacks!! LOVE the looks of those pancakes! yumm!

Julie @SavvyEats March 25, 2010 at 11:33 pm

I haven’t given blood, but I should probably work on getting through blood tests first… I’ve passed out at my last 3 blood tests, so I imagine that giving blood (more volume) would not end well for me!

Kristie March 26, 2010 at 12:07 am

Bar popcorn is so freaking good!!! I don’t donate blood – serious issues with needles + blood + passing out + panic attacks. Hopefully someday I can work through it though! This weekend I am headed to MI to throw my friend a bridal shower (and run 12 miles – think of me on Saturday morning ;)) – must be the weekend of showers. Have fun with friends!!

sophia March 26, 2010 at 12:25 am

Ah, I feel like a leech…literally. I have never donated blood before, but I have sure taken my fair share of it when I was hospitalized. I’ll give back once I have enough blood in me!

Those “pancakes” look super fabulous. I’m seriously in awe!!!

Jamie @ Tearaveler March 26, 2010 at 1:00 am

I’ve never donated blood.. but have done Prac studies before (essentially you’re a lab rat – they give you a pill and take your blood a bagillion times in exchange for a lot of money… I’m in college too, and desperate times (bank account) call for desperate measures (human lab rat). Soooo I should probably do the right thing and donate blood too, thanks for the great moral obligation to help others talk Holly! hah =)

This weekend: Black & White Charity Ball benefiting the Boy’s & Girl’s Club! Whoot! It’s going to be a blast! Have fun at the baby shower – I went to my first one ever for a friend back in September… practice safe sex friends!

Mama Pea March 26, 2010 at 1:26 am

You obviously know kids well, because both of mine would pee their pants for juice and pretzels. Who am I kidding…they’d pee them either way. Ooh la la…Mr. Lawyer!!!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is March 26, 2010 at 5:40 am

Lovely evening? More details please!

Erica March 26, 2010 at 5:45 am

WOW! Those Bulgur, Spinach and Toasted Walnut Pancakes look freaking fabulous. I want to make some! Glad you had fun having drinks out with senior lawyer man. He best be calling more often now ;) Good for you for donating blood! I have donated three times but am too tiny now to do it (I was just over the marker before)- I guess thats what you get when you’re 5’1″ :). This weekend= teaching, having friends over for dinner Saturday night (Mexican night whoop whoop) and a blogger brunch meet up on Sunday

Lauren March 26, 2010 at 5:56 am

Still need to try Sunflower Nut Butter. I hear great things about it!

Good for you for donating blood. Such a wonderful thing to do. :)

Okay, those pancakes……WOW! Awesome creation girl.

Hope you have an outstanding day love! :)

Matt March 26, 2010 at 6:46 am

I don’t give blood because I am afraid of needles. I know it is a lame excuse, but I am sticking to it ;)

Jenny March 26, 2010 at 8:06 am

I’m jealous of your “thirsty Thursday” evening. If I didn’t have to be in the lab in like t-minus 30 minutes, I would totally have partaken(?) in it too!

Sounds like a fun weekend ahead!

Jessie March 26, 2010 at 8:15 am

This may sound hokey, but thank you for donating blood. I am a cancer survivor and had to have quite a few blood transfusions to keep going during treatment. Those donations are really important!

Sarah (Finding My Balance) March 26, 2010 at 8:20 am

Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete March 26, 2010 at 8:23 am

I’m glad you had a good time with your lawyer friend! I’m already planning on sending you a gift for your babies! Just… Kidding! Well, sort of. ;)

Jenna March 26, 2010 at 8:30 am

Nothing wrong with going back to your roots for Thirsty Thursday! Never killed anybody :)

brandi March 26, 2010 at 8:55 am

work weekend :(

samantha March 26, 2010 at 10:06 am

bulgur! i have a bag of it sitting in the pantry that i spontaneously picked up from the bulk bin one day – should probably look into doing something with it.

i used to give blood at school (go blue!) but haven’t had the opportunity to do it now that i live in a big city. should probably look into it.

Whit March 26, 2010 at 10:12 am

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) March 26, 2010 at 11:01 am

Hahaha, I also came home a little tipsy last night. Unfortunately I was NOT returning from a hot date. Rather, I met my BFF and her boy for beers. Le sigh, 3rd wheel much?

Anywayyyy, love your sunflower butter + banana combo, selfless blood donation (you rock!), and your subway lunch. Doesn’t the smell of subway bread baking smell so good? Hehe.

Congrats on the date! Woo!

Crunchy Granola Gal March 26, 2010 at 12:04 pm

Anna @ Oats N Boats March 26, 2010 at 12:40 pm

You rock for donating blood! Such a small percentage of people donate and there is such a big need.
I used to say “I can’t donate because my fear of needles is so great I’ll be more of a problem for them than a help.” But you know what, blood doesn’t grow on trees… it’s in people, and you need people to donate to save lives. So one day I sucked it up and went into the drive at my workplace. I’ve been donating ever since. I’ve learned all these tricks to making it go faster. I’m upfront with them about my fear of needles and make sure I have them cover up the needle with an extra towel so I never see it. I almost faint because my anxiety goes up as my blood goes out… so I just spend a lot of time in the recovery area sipping juice, munching on snacks, and working on the sudoku puzzles they always have there. :-)
I’m so excited when I hear about people donating because there’s such a need, and heck we never know when we might need blood one day.

Evan Thomas March 26, 2010 at 1:03 pm

I tried donating blood last year and got rejected :-( I’m just a skinny runner with not enough blood to go around. Oh well, needles scare me so god only knows what I was thinking

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) March 26, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I’ve never donated blood! I don’t know why—I know I should, I just never have. Shame on me! You’ve inspired me to change this fact though, for real. You never know when you’ll need someone to donate their blood, and it’s such an important thing. Imagine if we *all* gave blood!

Your pancakes look awesome! I made lentil walnut pancakes that looked like those one time and they were so yummy. Walnuts add such a fun crunch and flavor! :D

Susan March 26, 2010 at 5:18 pm

Baaahahaha, no wonder you got drunk! It’s sooo easy to do when you give blood :P Happy to hear you had a blast with Mr. Lawyer ;)

I’m not allowed to give blood because I pass out. They told me to stop going!

I’m finishing up personal training classes this weekend! I’m terrified, we’re doing fitness and VO2 max tests :\

Pancake recipe also bookmarked! Jeez, I’ve got a week’s worth of meals after these last two posts.

Heart you Hollyyyyyy!!!!

BroccoliHut March 26, 2010 at 5:38 pm

Haha, glad you had a good evening last night:)
I’ve never given blood, but now that I know it means I get to eat more, I might just have to change that!

Graze With Me March 26, 2010 at 5:50 pm

You may or may not have inadvertently convinced a lot of people to give blood. If not only for the 650 calorie loss. <– is that really true? I had no idea.

Oh and I love savory pancakes!! They need to be featured more in blogland.

Drogger!! :) Love ya!

Susan March 27, 2010 at 8:21 am

I am eating peanut butter and banana toast as I type this (okay it’s not sunflower seed buttz but I still think it’s cool haha)!

Haha Subway is sooo tasty with all their salty condiments but it never fills me up for long either! I am a ravenous beast a couple hours later. There should be a name for that. Like the “Subway monster” or “Six-inch savage” or something.

I’ve rarely been eligible to donate since I’ve always teetered along the line of the bmi charts (I wish they’d stop using these as an indicator of health!) but I think it’s a GREAT cause and I totally support it!

Have a happy weekend Holly!

Bekah March 27, 2010 at 1:30 pm

Yepp.. making me laugh, again. Hah. And I’m actually in college, and I think you’re crazier than me! Although the times I have drank here have been completely legitimate and classy. :) A glass or two of wine.. yuuupp. It’s been a good time!

And ahhh total props on giving blood. 650 cals?! Wowzas. That’s one way to burn some calories. Although.. I pass out at such random things, I do not think I’d be a good blood donor!

Subway is completely okay at any time of day. Sometimes it is exactly what I am craving!

Jessica March 28, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Katie March 29, 2010 at 6:49 pm

Sunbutter and bananas are a killer combo that I can NEVER get enough of. Nom.

I have never donated blood…I’m kind of scared! Last time they came to our school, I worked up the courage to do it, and then they told me I couldn’t because had gotten a tattoo in the last year. Ah well, maybe next time…

sara February 23, 2011 at 2:50 pm

I just stumbled on your website after googling images of Cossetas Mostacoli (total craving for carbs at the moment). I’m drooling. I’ll bookmark you and check back, would love to make some of your recipes. Thanks!
