Oh summer.

You hate Wisconsin.

And I get it.

I do.

It’s bitterly cold here for more than half the year. Our football team’s colors are a horrendous mishmash of forest green and marigold. Our Miss USA contestant had to resign her crown due to a felony for misappropriating identity information. It snows in April.

And that’s not an uncommon phenomenon.

But I think sometimes you forget how much more appreciative we are for you and your sunny rays of light. And how we make the world’s best cheese. And how we’re home to the National Mustard Museum. Don’t underestimate us. Behind our business-in-the-front-party-in-the-back mullets, snowmobile raching jackets and penchant for saying “bayg” and “boaat,” we are merely gosh darn nice Midwesterners looking for a much-needed tan.

So I am going to forgive you.

I am going to forgive you for the 40-degree temperatures, torrential downpours of rain, whippingly cold winds and fall-like weather we’ve experienced as of late.

Because this weekend, I went to the farmer’s market for the first time this year. I gazed at vibrant flowers. I smelled spicy radishes. I could almost taste the thick, syrupy honey extracted straight from the comb earlier that morning.

Best of all, I wore flip-flops.

Then, as if you cosmically knew that my apartment lacks air conditioning, you cranked mother nature’s dial to a swelteringly muggy 90 degrees on Memorial Day.

{Warning: be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.}

I woke up sweating to an already 82 degree apartment, eschewed any form of work and instead, spent the day boating with friends.

Eating. Dance partying. Swimming (to retrieve a runaway visor). Drinking. Peeing. Laughing. Tanning. Singing. All on the lake. For eight hours. And it was the best eight hours I can think of in recent memory, although as it turns out, almost anything is better than being called horse face a la Sarah Jessica Parker.

The point is summer, you may hate Wisconsin.

But please stay.

Don’t go.

Pull up a chair and sit awhile.

You’ll learn to like it here – Packer jerseys, mullets, cheese, felons, mustard and all – and I’ll promise to never complain about my 82-degree apartment again.

Oh winter.

That is the best cup ever.

“Packer jerseys, mullets, cheese, felons, mustard and all – and I’ll promise to never complain about my 82-degree apartment again.”

Seasons in MN or WI: frigidity, humidity, road construction.
That’s it.

But the people are good. That’s all that matters :)

the asparagus shot. I would buy that. Stunning!!!!!!

Hey Holly,
I visited Madison for the first time this past weekend and went to the farmers market too! I also went to the mustard museum… and bratfest. And I ate tons of cheese. It was glorious- what a nice place. I was half hoping I would spy you wandering around the city somewhere so I could freak out since I’ve been reading your blog for 1.5 years :P

Lauren May 31, 2011 at 8:01 pm

When the weather gets like this, I too seem to forget all those terribly cold months. LOVE summer!!!

Amy B @ Second City Randomness May 31, 2011 at 8:02 pm

We are for real on the same wavelength – I just wrote about Chicago’s crazy weather tonight!

Katie May 31, 2011 at 8:33 pm

I also have a love affair with summer, and completely forgive the 8 months of snow and ick in Colorado. Also, I want to go boating.

Erica May 31, 2011 at 8:46 pm

I hope summer hangs around for you!!! The picture of the flowers is beautiful. And those boating pictures are so cool. I want your camera and picture taking abilities :)

Danielle May 31, 2011 at 9:20 pm

You’re awesome. Hope you get to enjoy all that summer has to offer for at least the next two and a half months :).

I went to high school with Aaron Rodgers so I can’t really hate Wisconsin, even though I have my doubts about loving it. I’m very jealous of your weather… I’m in Northern California and it’s raining right now! It plans to rain all week and is threatening thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow.

Dear Mother Nature, go suck a d*#k :)

Jessica May 31, 2011 at 10:05 pm

Drinking in beer on boats! That’s what Wisconsin does! (said in my best frat bro voice)

I have to plan a roadtrip to wisconsin, It’s not too far from Toronto, apparently there is more to it than cheese. Thanks for sharing your adventures, I’m waiting for our farmers markets to bloom soon.

becca June 1, 2011 at 10:48 am

I’m from Wisconsin and I love it! Everyday is a surprise when it comes to weather :) I like surprises!

Megan (Braise the Roof) June 1, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Ah boating. I was literally just talking about wanting to get on a boat this summer- it’s tricky in Chicago! This weather is amazing- I am a happy girl. Finally the Midwest gets a break. :) Happy times.

Emily June 1, 2011 at 2:42 pm

I love that dandelion puff picture. And I love summer. Utah has multiple season disorder and can’t get it together. Hail on Monday and 80 degrees yesterday. Whateverrrrr. xoxo

Adam Deane June 1, 2011 at 2:50 pm

I loved this entire post. You make Wisconsin sound so appealing, and I think it is one of the only states I haven’t visited… So happy you enjoyed your weekend! Looks like a blast. :)

Alyssa June 2, 2011 at 11:50 am

I was in Wisconsin in March and I really liked it!! (I went to Eau Claire and than La Crosse to visit the university)… its coldness is nothing compared to North Dakota!!!

Natalie @ Adventures in Jackson June 2, 2011 at 1:13 pm

I was nursing a hangover on Memorial Day from the party we had the night before. It was grand but I think I had too many shots! haha I definately have a love/hate relationship with Wisconsin as well! :)

Mo June 8, 2011 at 3:45 pm

I promise you, as you get older – so will the poopy weather around here! I curse under my breath (ok, I really curse out loud) – when it takes so long for summer to arrive and then, bam – with a vengeance! Got my garden planted tho – so I’m ready for that first warm tomato – I absolutely love Madison’s farmers’ market. Hoping to make a weekend of it this summer and wander around the capitol. Take care – and enjoy. Pretty soon we’ll have Summerfest over here – and that should be a party!
