one beauteous year

by Holly on April 23, 2010

in seriousness

365 days. 346 posts. 12,041 comments. Limitless amounts of love.

That’s what I have received in the past year through this blog.

It all started on April 22, 2009 – exactly one year ago – with a lil’ post entitled Welcome to the Healthy Everythingtarian.  One short day later, I followed it up with my very first food post

salads + Greek yog messes...apparently not much changes in a year

The very first Holly Investigates… segment also debuted with a look into the hard-to-pronounce grain quinoa (keen-wah, for the record). After several of these posts, I abandoned this.  And I admit, it was mostly due to laziness.  So sue me.

May came quickly, and with it, my first friend wedding + 2nd ever half-marathon!

happy (almost) 1st anniversary to mr. and mrs. sander!

1:53.40 (8:40/mile pace)...booyah.

To celebrate my 1-month blogiversary (and in shameless hope of upping my readership), I hosted my very first giveaway. Clearly, a big milestone in a blogger’s life.

June began with the news that Michael Jackson died.  R.I.P.: You will forever be my man in the mirror. And my one and only Billie Jean.  Not to mention you rock my world. Have I told you lately the way you make me feel? Because you are truly a thriller.

The first official month of summer saw the first of several rhyming posts as well as a pub on wheels. Because let’s be real, it doesn’t get any better than drinking beer while pedaling an oversize pub through the streets of Minneapolis.

watch out, we've got a sassy bride on our hands.

One of my bestest college roomies also got married in June (and I was in the wedding!)…

one insanely gorgeous bride

After several months of blogging, I finally started getting into the groove and becoming more creative with posts. Not to mention, I went through a stage of total obsessiveness with overnight oat bran…

1/3 cup oatbran, 6 oz. French vanilla yog, 1/3 cup skim milk, 2 spoonfuls shredded coconut, 1/2 mashed naner, 1/2 cup strawberries + 1 spoonful raw AB = L.O.V.E.

Must recreate that soon.

My 100th post came (trust me, it’s a good one) and went before I moved onto more serious matters – including a somewhat introspective reflection on food blogging.

August was a CRAZY month.  Seriously. I didn’t even need my blog to remind me of that. In one of my most popular posts ever, I revealed How I Became an Everythingtarian

hint: it started much younger than I realized (and I'm the one in the yellow bow)

I also scored my own domain name.  No wait, I definitely paid money for my own domain.  It all started at this WordPress address before moving over to www.thehealthyeverythingtarian.com, where you are currently reading my daily ramblings.

In a Janetha-inspired flashback moment, I revealed my life’s bucket list as well as giving myself credit for all the things I’ve already crossed off my list…

skydiving in Australia = one of the BEST things I've ever done

skydiving in Australia = one of the BEST things I've ever done

Oh yeah! I got a completely new job and moved to Madison!

cheese curds + beer...the top two reasons I love Wisconsin

Apparently, August was BUSY month.

Beginning in September, my pre-marathon nerves really began.  Seeing Michael Pollan speak live in Madison definitely helped quell the nerves a bit, as did coming up with another favorite post of mine, A Blogger’s ABCs.

There’s only one thing to say about OctoberI ran my mother-effin’ first marathon.

running with your sister for 4 hours, 12 minutes? that's love.

The Everythingtarian Family out in full support...sans Daddio

What, what?!?!

Looking back, I forgot how awesome of a month October was.  I even got nominated for a Foodbuzz blog award! I seriously do not know how that happened. In another one of my all-time most popular posts, Nellie taught us all how to make our own homemade Greek yog!  I need to stop being lazy and start doing this again.  So easy!

November marked the beginning of the crazy holiday season.  To avoid getting wrapped up in the insanity, I decided to raise money to build a clean water drinking well in Cambodia instead of receiving presents.  To this day, I cannot thank everyone enough for their donations, support, linkbacks and what not.  Doing this made me TRULY see just how many good people there are in the world. There are lots of them – trust me.

I mulled over some thoughts on perfection in December as well as celebrated my 25th birthday. Eeek!  In Jessica Simpson terms, that makes me halfway to 30.  In real terms, that makes me halfway to 50.  Quite frankly, both equally scare me.

How did I celebrate?

Chuck.

E.

Cheese.

Naturally.

I also made some 2010 resolutions (although I prefer to call them “things I will do in 2010”), which I am currently hard at work on.

In January, I totaled all of our well donations up and realized we raised $1,145 for the construction of a clean water drinking well in Cambodia.  My heart still warms thinking about it.

I fell in love with Anthony Bourdain. I had my first Madison bloggy meet-up. I flashbacked to my time teaching English in Thailand.  All were wonderful posts…trust me.

Thai food...how I love thee.

February! What happened in February? Hmmmm…

For one, I instituted my 12-Step No-tox, which quite frankly, I have used often since its inception. Hint: It’s so much better and more delicious than any crazy diet fad or trick out there.

I got a new boyfriend named iPhone

We started dating on Valentine's Day. So romantic, I know.

In March, I finally admitted to myself how much I enjoy writing, and as a result – the words really began to flow. Ironically, my readership also went down this month. However, I could care less because I really, really feel like this month was filled with some of my very best (and favorite!) blog posts ever.

First up? Mama Everythingtarian’s favorite post ever

How could Mama Everythingtarian not love a post where her daughter looks to be straight out of the trailer park of trashiness?

I shared my career goal of pursuing writing, and for the fun of it, became a French foodie for a post.

not necessarily a meal you'd find at a French bistro, but it was all made in love - complete with a Parisian mustache

I delved deeper into my neurotic psychosis and talked about overcoming criticism and rejection, which is something I struggle with every. single. day. Still. I may or may not have had an issue with this yesterday.

In one of my prouder moments, I showed you all just how much I can pack down.  Breakfast, Indian buffets, three-course dinners, beers + snacks all in one day. I also learned how to lead from my salsa man Doug and definitely kept living the good life…twice: The Good Life, Part OneThe Good Life, Part Two.

friends = a mondo part of living The Good Life

pretzels + Diet Coke...also a Good Life essential pairing

And that brings us to April.

Oh one year…how you can go so fast and yet so slow at the same time! Some days, I want time to speed up so I can get to experience all the fun things I have planned.  Other days (most days I would say), I just want time to well…take its time!  Days pass, weeks end and I never feel like I have enough time to appreciate each day for what it is. The present.

However, blogging has helped me reflect on each day, take the good and the bad, turn it into something I can laugh about and let me live the next day to the fullest.  And it is because of each of YOU that it keeps going, growing and progressing.

So, thank you.  Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.

If I wasn’t poor, I would host a fabulous giveaway.  If I had major hook-ups with Whole Foods, I would get you each a $1,000 gift card. If one of my parents worked for the airlines, I would send you somewhere exotic and full of good food.  If I knew Jake Gyllenhaal, I would keep him for myself and set you up with the celebrity crush of your dreams.

But alas, I don’t.

However, I do have love + thanks.  And I am giving you each a piece of that as I type this.

Aww Holly, what a beautiful post lady! Seriously. I felt like I was watching a “best of” series of a television show or something. and fyi- march was a bad month for blog reading for me, i failed to read allll blogs, but i went back and read your mama’s fav post ever, seriously, really well written and i loved the content. i love when people write well but still maintain their writer’s voice, and you my dear balance that very well.

some of my favorite “wordier” posts are also the least viewed too. c’est la vie! we’re a world that loves picture books!

I love your blog! I don’t comment enough (I take you for granted) but I really love reading it. WHY, you ask? Your fantastic sense of humor, with a splash of seriousness for life and all its life-ness.

Thank you for sharing it all!
