Pickles, Nails + Valentines

Wanna know the best thing ever?

Not ONE person said they didn’t like pickles on yesterday’s post.  I could not be happier that my readers share my absolute adoration for this brined cucumber delicacy.  I mean, just say the word out loud: PICKLES! Such a fun, happy word.

Anyways, this morning, I woke up wanting one thing: MORE SLEEP.

But I pushed through with the help of two cups of coffee (S.M.A.: standard morning amount) and a lovely bowl of oats, which was inspired by one of my favorite candy bars…

1/2 cup oats
1 cup water
1 egg (whisked in)
drizzle of maple syrup + cinnamon
1 tbsp. shredded coconut
1 square truffle dark chocolate
PB

That would be Almond Joy…oatmeal-style.

Which reminds me…growing up, I would always give up candy for Lent.  It rarely ever worked out.  Let’s be real, I came up with about 1 million excuses for why I COULD eat candy.  For example, (a) Sundays didn’t count, (b) I couldn’t turn down candy given to me by my friend’s mom, (c) if candy was perhaps in baked form (ahem, M&M cookie?), that didn’t count and (d) see all of the above.

This year, I am determined to STOP BITING MY NAILS. I did this successfully two years ago.  However, when I started my new job, I think I was a bit stressed so I resorted to biting again and have continued since.  If I did it once, I can do it again. Once they grow out a bit, I will show you pics of my nails.  I am way too embarrassed to post them right now :).

Lunch went unphotographed, because it was a work lunch meeting.  However, I devoured a ginormous salad, and it was glorious.

After work, I came home looking for the fastest dinner I could put together.

Friends, enter in: THE PLATE OF SNACKAGE.

In corner 1, we have the dippers: carrots, cauliflower, Mary’s Gone Crackers Curry Sticks & Twigs and 4 Gardein Crispy Tenders (a.k.a. chicken-less, chicken nuggets).

In corner 2, we have the dips: peanut butter and artichoke spinach dip.

And in corner 3, we have a mini-dessert: Mini Clif Blueberry Crisp Bar.

Where did I get such a cute n’ tiny thang?

(Oops…looked like I showed you my ugly nail-bitten hands anyways!)

From my sweet secret bloggy valentine Casey!!!

Look at this AMAZING stash of goods she so graciously graced me with…

“Graciously graced me with…” My grammar is suriously going downhill.

Seriously, how cute is this cup + bowl combo though?

THANK YOU CASEY! Seriously, this was a fabulous gift, and I hope you know how happy it made me!

Now, it is almost 7:30pm, and I have a very important date.

With whom you ask?

I guess you will just have to wait until tomorrow… :)

Until then…

What is your favorite candy bar? I heart Almond Joy, Baby Ruth and Caramello.  Yum.

What is your worst bad habit? Look above.  I’ve been biting my nails almost ALL my life, and it needs to stop.  My nervous energy can be put to something much more useful!

I believe in you! You can do it!
And I looooved Fast Break by Reeses.
I let myself get overwhelmed by things :-( I was thinking of fixing that for lent but I thought that might be a bit overwhelming

Katie @ Health for the Whole Self February 17, 2010 at 7:47 pm

My favorite candy bar would have to be Three Musketeers…fluffy nougat-y wonderfulness! Yum! :)

I bit my nails for YEARS!!! Then I stopped…and then started again. (Sounds like we have a similar story!) But I’m happy to say that last year I quit again, so I think that’s a sign that you’ll be successful this time around.

Mellissa February 17, 2010 at 7:54 pm

I love Take 5, sweet and salty! The perfect combo.

Leah Z February 17, 2010 at 7:56 pm

I loveeee almond joy and mounds!!! anything with coconut…anddd you can’t beat any flavor of M&Ms
i’m also a perpetually bad nail biter…don’t really know when i started but its pretty gross, but i never stop haha

Lauren @ Eater Not a Runner February 17, 2010 at 7:57 pm

Favorite candy bar? Reese’s cups for sure (if those count).

Worst habit? My ice cream addiction!

Jenny February 17, 2010 at 7:58 pm

oh my god I used to be an avid nail-biter. All ya gotta do is dab on some clear nail polish and I swear, next time you go to bite your nails and catch a taste of the polish you’ll be warded off forevz!

sophia February 17, 2010 at 8:04 pm

I love pickles too, but not so much on their own. It has to be incorporated into something.

Fave candy bar = kit kat and butterfingers!
Worst habit = staying up waaaaay past my (self-assigned) bed time.

Erica February 17, 2010 at 8:10 pm

HI chica! Today was def an extra coffee day!Yummy dinner- those gardein tenders are just so darn good! And I think I have at least a little nut butter every night with dinner :) I’m not a big chocolate person- my favorite candy is those little candies that look like raspberries and blackberries <3

daintyvegan February 17, 2010 at 8:17 pm

My favorite candy bar is Lindt Dark Swiss (or something like that). It. Is. So. Good.

My worst habit is.. overeating on foods that I like. Or don’t like. Overeating in general..haha.

The Brunette February 17, 2010 at 8:31 pm

Mini Clifs are SOOOO addictive! Seriously, I have a multi pack of chocolate chip, crunchy peanut butter, and chocolate brownie from Costco, and I’m going through them WAY too fast. I LOVE Mars bars, but they don’t sell them in this country anymore. BOO! Also, tell me what you think of the coconut M&Ms. I tried them and they were kind of bizarre. There’s no actual coconut in them.

I have a terrible habit of eating almond butter straight from the jar. I vowed yesterday to STOP, and 36 hours in I’m still going strong :)

Jess February 17, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Can I join you in your biting nails challenge? Because that’s something I REALLY need to do.

Pickles. Love em’

Amy B @ Second City Randomness February 17, 2010 at 8:56 pm

I love the combo of chocolate and peanut butter in my oatmeal- AND coconut! Deliciousness- I think you inspired my breakfast for tomorrow… mmm

And my fav candy bar is either 100 Grand or Reeses Peanut Butter Cups… or snickers… I might have to think a little more about that one…

Jenn February 17, 2010 at 9:02 pm

I used to LOVE Royale bars (minty chocolate truffle thing) but haven’t been able to find them for years.

I haven’t even heard of the chocolate bars you listed! Maybe they’re not in Canada, well, the Baby Ruth thing is but not the others! And I hear you guys don’t have Smarties, or Ketchup chips! Mmm

Matt February 17, 2010 at 9:03 pm

1. Snickers.

2. Procrastination!

How did you like those chicken tenders? I want to try that brand!

Leena February 17, 2010 at 9:15 pm

my favorite candy bar is either Take 5 or 3 Musketeers! i love the take 5 bar so much because it has my favorite combo ever – peanut butter and pretzel… yum.. :)
sadly, i bite my nails too… but i’d really love to stop… it’s so hard, but it’s such a bad habit!

katie February 17, 2010 at 9:37 pm

fav candy bar-REESES!!
your oats look FAB!
and great package! ahh my bad habit is burping in public..bahaha gross but true

Tiffany February 17, 2010 at 9:40 pm

Almond Joy Oats?? Diggin your style! And I think tapas style meals are great. I love putting them together when I have a few random things left in the freezer or fridge.

My fave candy bar is Rolos….Umm well, it’s not a bar but candy, yes.

And my worst habit would have to be not thinking before I speak. If I can make it to 4P without sticking my foot in my mouth-it’s a good day!

Gabriela (froyolover) February 17, 2010 at 9:42 pm

YUUUM, absolutely loved all your eats!
;)
My worst bad habit would probably be correcting people. I learned how to minimize my corrections, but sometimes it just jumps from my mouth :/
Have a great Thursday!
Brazilian XOXO´s,
Gabriela

ellen eats beets February 17, 2010 at 9:51 pm

I used to absolutely love Snickers, but I’m a huge almond joy fan these days.

Jenna February 17, 2010 at 9:54 pm

Havee fun!!

Allison R. February 17, 2010 at 10:54 pm

Candy bar…hmmm…probably Baby Ruth or Kit Kat!

Worst habit? Just one? Oh man…cracking my joints. It really grosses a lot of people out, but it feels oh so good :)

elise February 18, 2010 at 12:08 am

ok, a few things.
sadly, i used to adore pickles, but since kyle has an extreme sensitivity to them i have been trained to dislike them…which is why i didnt comment ayer. sorry to ruin your average.

that mini clif is SERIOUSLY the cutest thing ever. the only thing cuter is the number of times you used the word seriously in the last part of your post. i find i use that word a ridic amount too. i also am an exclamation whore. i use them all over the place!!!! (probz way more than apprope, but i dont care, im passionate about food yo!)

and finally, that bowl and cup are SERIOUSLY the cutest!! ever!! haha!!!!

Mama Pea February 18, 2010 at 1:47 am

Guess who has that heart tumbler? Only the two cutest girls in the whole wide world…and I don’t mean the Mary Kate and Ashley!!!

Mama Pea February 18, 2010 at 1:48 am

Oh Lord, I was going to say the Olsen twins, but then thought I’d name them personally, you know, to help them get over that whole no separate identity complex that twins have, but forgot to delete “the.” I’m really not a moron, just tired. :)

Molly February 18, 2010 at 2:25 am

1.) O.M.G.- Reese’s may be the death of me. Or Snickers…I just love candy, yummy
2.) Worst habit- it’s a nervous habit of biting the skin on the side of my nails- how FREAKIN’ discusting is that…maybe I shouldn’t have shared that. Oh well, we all have flaws. I procrastinate too, but not always a bad thing ;-)

P.S. Watching American Idol right now and Simon just called Mike, this 7-ft tall like 300lb personal trainer ‘kiddo’, bahahahah, totally did not fit and was funny. Just thought I’d share that haha. Have a great rest of the week Holly!

Michal February 18, 2010 at 5:35 am

That was so sweet of casey, your one lucky ldy for your gift! One of my worst habits is that I like to do too much at once and then can get stressed out,

Lauren February 18, 2010 at 6:02 am

Haha, who in this world could NOT like pickles! That would be unheard of!!!!

Glad you pushed through your day. It was a rough one for me as well. All I wanted to do was sleep but unfortunately, a little thing called life got in the way of those plans. Oh well.

Mmmm, favorite candy bar….Milky Way! Love them but I haven’t had one in years. Why you ask? No idea. I guess I should relive this favorite childhood memory of mine soon.

Have a good day girl!

Tina February 18, 2010 at 6:13 am

I love Butterfinger. But my favorite candy is candy corn. Halloween is a bad season for me with hitting up too much sugar. LOL

And a bad habit? An old bad habit of mine was feeling the need to weigh myself every day. Now I don’t weigh myself at all. The best habit I ever broke!

Kailey (SnackFace) February 18, 2010 at 7:22 am

Snackplates are where it’s at!!! <—-Gross structure, but true.

Mmmm my fave candy is a tie between Reeses (anything reeses) and Snickers. Oh how I love thee.

I have no bad habits. KIDDING. I crack my knuckles, but I don't think that's bad. I have a stress/nervous tick of picking at/ around my nails. I have nail polish on only three nails right now. Gosh, I'm thinking about bad habits now…I frown when I'm thinking/watching tv. MamaJ always gets on me about that! She's fearful for my wrinkles! Lol. And does gas count? OK just wondering.

LOVE YOU!!!! xoxoxoxoxo

Ally (Sweet & Savory) February 18, 2010 at 7:48 am

My favorite candy bar is a Hershey’s w/Almonds. And worst bad habit? Not working out enough!

Katie February 18, 2010 at 8:35 am

Mmmm Almond Joy oats! I never used to like those as a kid, but now I can’t get enough! My all-time favorite is Reese’s PB cups, though, and now unfortunately thanks to Averie, I know how to make them myself!

This is a little gross, but I’m really bad about scratching my dry legs and picking scabs. TMI!

Graze With Me February 18, 2010 at 9:04 am

Cute little Clif bar! I love small versions of things…

Fav candy bar is either Twix or Snickers & I have a horrible habit of touching my hair a lot – it annoys everyone around me.

Chelsea @ (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) February 18, 2010 at 9:19 am

I actually hate Almond Joys. However, I’m loving the looks of your oatmeal alternative. My favorite candy bars are Baby Ruths, Snickers, and Twix.

Amazing Valentine gifts! Right down to the festive cup and bowl combo.

My worst habit is internet idling. I don’t even want to think about the books I could be reading, things I could be accomplishing in lieu of internet loitering.

Lindsay (Waking Up Hungry) February 18, 2010 at 9:56 am

I am a sucker with anything almonds and coconut. Together or seperate is fine so bring on the Almond Joy’s. Dark chocolate is a fav too.
I bit my nails until I got pregnant with my first daughter and the wonderful prenatal vitamins showed me why I should not bite my nails. They made my nails look sooo good! I stopped right then and there.

Susan February 18, 2010 at 10:17 am

I have never seen those tiny clif bars – I want one! I find the regular sized ones are just a tad too calorie and carb heavy for my usual snacks. I typically only ever eat them before strenuous exercise.

That is such an amazing bloggie valentine gift! Wow, seeing all these pop up on blogs make me feel crummy for the lame gift I sent.

Favourite candy bar is Reese’s. But Coffee Crisp gets an honourable mention ;)

My worst habit, by far, is chewing gum. I chew SO much. I have a lot of nervous energy too. It’s why I was a smoker, and then I started biting my cheeks, so I switched to gum. And now I can’t stop. Gah!

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) February 18, 2010 at 10:39 am

Mm, I love candy. Reese’s cups and Twix are my fav! Love your candy-inspired oatmeal. That’s how to start the day off right!

My bad habit?? Worrying wayyy too much.

Have a fab Thursday! xoxo

susan (stepping off the coaster) February 18, 2010 at 11:17 am

i too love caramello… really, anything with CARAMEL…. mmmmmmmm caramelllllll.
whoa… you get the idea!

from one nail biter to another… i have some thoughts! i stop from time to time, and actually i’m much less of a biter now, and more of a picker (going into detail is probably grossing everyone out)… but you know what actually helps me… getting manicures. i had to suck it up the first couple times and just get one, even though my nails looked pretty bad and it was kind of embarrassing, but a good manicure cleans them up and gets rid of everything i would normally mess with AND makes them look so good i’m more likely to leave them alone.

Maya February 18, 2010 at 11:30 am

LOVE peanut butter cups and toffee (Heath!) I love pickles, too, which I failed to mention yesterday. The other day I tried pickled okra and it was aMAZing. I’ve never had trouble with nail biting, but maybe a good trick is to get yourself a pretty bracelet or ring. Every time you see it you’ll think (hopefully) “don’t bite your nails!” Like I said, I don’t nail bite, but it seems like a sound psychological technique.

sam February 18, 2010 at 11:31 am

sigh, candy. why is it so good? call me old fashioned, but i LOVE reeses. oh and i also love ritter sport marzipan (dark chocolate with marzipan squeezed in between).

i still bite my nails occasionally, but i find when i keep them polished it helps me.

Angharad February 18, 2010 at 11:32 am

Lady friend, lady friend. I am also trying to stop biting my nails! But not for lent, just for kicks. I also grew mine out two years ago, whilst travelling and then proceded to bite them all off when I moved here. GAH. How about if (WHEN) we both succeed we treat ourselves to a little manicure action?? I think that would be stellar. It might take me a while though…mine are short and stubby and gross as can be. Nice.

My fave chocolate bar? EITHER dairy milk fruit and nut OR yorkie. mmmmmmm.

Jenny February 18, 2010 at 11:41 am

yay for pickles! they are such winners ;)

And I have NOT seen those mini blueberry clifs! Consider me on the hunt NOW.

Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers February 18, 2010 at 12:31 pm

i love almond joys so this oatmeal bowl is right up my alley! YUM!

Emily (A Nutritionist Eats) February 18, 2010 at 12:48 pm

I just found out YESTERDAY that there are little almond joys in m&m size/shape. I am all about that!

Ildie February 18, 2010 at 2:06 pm

I LOVE Mounds and Toblerone. Haven’t enjoyed either in ages. TRAGIC!

Uhm, this is a tad disgusting but I pick at the flesh around my nail bed. Have since I was little. I don’t even realize when I’m doing it. It gets pretty intense when I feel stressed. So uhm yeah, that was pretty disgusting. :)

BroccoliHut February 18, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Awesome snackage plate! Also a little jealous of your VDay goodies…
You have good taste in candy bars–I am all about Almond Joys and Baby Ruths.
Bad habit? Picking out all the raisins from the raisin bran box.

LindsayRuns February 18, 2010 at 9:30 pm

hahaha sorry to say, my food “hate” list is pickles, olives, and ranch dressing. :) Can I still be your friend?? That blueberry crisp bar is my favorite one…well, that and carrot cake.

Worst habit? hmmm I am bad about making decisons, I’ll wait till the very very last second!
