Princess Helga

Meet my newest friend Princess Helga.

After a three-year-long, sometimes-I-want-a-bike-but-not-sure-if-I-want-to-spend-all-that-money search, I finally found the two-wheeled wonder that perfectly fits my Everythingtarian needs. With the lovely help of Madeline and Boots, I am now the proud owner of a single speed, purple + yellow, black-rimmed, bad a$$ hipster bike whom I’ve affectionately named Princess Helga.

Don’t mess with her.

Or Budget Bicycles in Madison.

Or me, for that matter. I actually have fingernails now, ya know.

For a seemingly endless amount of time, I debated. And debated. And debated.

{I am a drama queen, after all.}

Road bike?

Hybrid bike?

Single-speed bike?

Mountain bike?

One bike, two bike, red bike, blue bike?

Or perhaps a black bike, blue bike, old bike, new bike?

For the love of trying to be both environmentally-friendly + heart-healthy at the same time, which bike is a gal like myself to choose?!?

One with a yellow seat.

Purple frame.

Black-rimmed tires.

And a pair of pomegranate corduroy Toms shoes to boot, me thinks.

All Madeline-approved, of course.

And so, one 2010 SE single-speed bike, black helmet, u-lock bike lock + $400 later, I’ve officially become a bike commuter.

And a bike dancer.

Because really, those things go hand-in-Everythingtarian-hand.

My commute to work is 15 minutes shorter.

I feel 23x as hip{ster} riding my single speed on the mean streets of Madison.

And I am 100% sure I have finally found my one, true love. I even had separation anxiety leaving my poor Princess Helga all by her lonesome strapped to that harsh-looking  metal bike rack while I was at work today. Is this what parents feel like leaving their child for the first time? The obsessive need to check on their bike kid every hour?

If so, I am going to be in serious helicopter parent trouble if I ever find a guy foolish enough to (a) date me, (b) marry me and (c) procreate with me.

I mean, do you know what kind of family I come from?

Anyways, the point of this post was to tell you I bought a bike.

And celebrated with beer.

Let the good times roll.

Did you get what I did there?  Ya know…roll? Like how a bike’s tires roll?

I made a bike funny.

I blame the yellow seat. It’s making me seriously sassy.

YOUR turn friends – biking, yay or nay? As always, sharing is caring!

I say YAY! I finally broke down and bought a bike too, but I do it more for recreation and exercise. If I could figure out a way to keep my hair looking decent and how to ride a bike in a skirt, I would definitely ride my bike to work. :)
I LOVE your bike!!!! Mine is definitely not that cool! :)

hippierunner July 6, 2011 at 12:30 am

yay for bike commuting (from a fellow bike commuter)!!!!! I wouldn’t leave a purdy little bike like that out all alone though- I’ve heard you should cover the seat with a plastic bag, etc so people see it as less valuable. Or is that just what people do here on the mean streets of L.A.? lol. Either way, congrats on your new BFF. Cheers to many good times with Princess Helga! :)

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga July 6, 2011 at 3:51 am

I dont have a bike but when I lived in MN and IL, I biked EVERYWHERE! Ironic that I live in San Diego now where I could bike yearround and not freeze to death, but I dont own a bike.

Love that purple number!

Kristie July 6, 2011 at 4:27 am

You go girl! Bike communicating is the bee’s knees :). Also, Princess Helga is the bomb.

Lauren July 6, 2011 at 5:45 am

She’s a beauty! :) Love the yellow seat. You just need a matching basket.

Uncle Tommie Timbertoes July 6, 2011 at 6:00 am

Welcome to the wonderful world of “whisking”.

Amy B @ Second City Randomness July 6, 2011 at 6:01 am

Princess Helga looks like a winner!

However, I’m pretty much a “nay” on the biking thing. I’m a hazard to myself and everyone else. :(

Erica July 6, 2011 at 6:48 am

Love! Adorable! Josh and I want to get bikes post baby. Whoop

sarah (sarah learns) July 6, 2011 at 7:00 am

i want a bike soooooo badly especially in madison where you’re not cool unless you’re a bike-rider.but i’m also a major worrier. and riding so close to cars scares me. *sigh* i really need to get over that.

Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table July 6, 2011 at 7:09 am

A) Princess Helga is a rockin’ name
B) The yellow seat makes it
C) Careful riding home after those beers. Not that I have any experience in that area… (actually it was roller skates and I still have the scar to prove what I bad idea it was).

Madeline July 6, 2011 at 7:33 am

I’ve never been more proud. Also, I promise everyone that the fair maiden is even prettier in person. And sassier.

Hillary July 6, 2011 at 7:33 am

1. Yellow seat? Corduroy TOMS? Too good, my friend. Just too good.
2. I say yay for others, but nay for myself. I don’t know when it happened, but somewhere between the age of ten and, well, now I became deathly afraid of riding a bike. Out of nowhere. For no reason. I so badly want to cycle (because I do enjoy it!), but the thought of being tossed to the pavement terrifies me!

Alex @ IEatAsphalt July 6, 2011 at 7:46 am

Love the new wheels! Definitely a smart purchase. Just wait until you start to want to a road bike, then you know you’re in trouble.

Jessica @ Stylish Stealthy and Healthy July 6, 2011 at 7:51 am

Best name ever.
And purple with a yellow seat? I can’t even “handle” it.

Haha- get it?? Handle?? Oh, bike humor.

Evan Thomas July 6, 2011 at 7:54 am

Your bike is dope. I love the color scheme. It will match your mustard pants.

Liz July 6, 2011 at 7:57 am

Girl – love your bike! I feel your pain on deciding what kind to get. I’ve had a road bike forever but it’s not comfy to use it as a commuter. I recently got a used commuter bike with a fancy basket and bell to ride to our local farmers market. LOVE IT! The fact that you are getting exercise and being environmentally cautious is awesome! Plus I have a little one so I just hook his trailer to it and off we go. I put a link to my blog above – I hope to do a post about riding to the farmers market soon! Congrats on the Purple Princess Helga – you go girl!

sofia July 6, 2011 at 8:10 am

okay. this post is flippin’ hilarious. princess helga is a sexy beast. i sense a little competition now.. i mean, blog readers may want to see more pictures of her these days. watch out.

to answer your question: i am anti-nyc bike riding. it’s damn scary around here, people die and stuff. i had a bad accident two years ago (fractured a couple ribs, gouged open my elbow and bled everywhere) and since then i’m scarred (literally). but countryside road biking? i’m all about it!

Mellissa July 6, 2011 at 8:12 am

Yeah for a bike, I have one on my list but it has been at least 10 years since I owned one and I am a bit scared about it!

dana @ my little celebration July 6, 2011 at 8:31 am

YES to the bike. I’ll have to take an equally fantastic photo of me riding mine and send it to you to prove it.

Sarah B. July 6, 2011 at 8:37 am

Princess Helga is an awesome looking bike! I love the combination of purple and yellow. it is very hip looking!

I want to bike to work/school but I am terrified of biking on the road. In grade eight I was biking home from a friends house, it was one o’clock and I hadn’t had lunch so I was STARVING! I was biking along, thinking about what to have for lunch (I had decided to have left over mac and cheese) when I looked up, saw a parked car, hit the parked car and broke my arm. I had to spend two days in the hospital because they had to straighten my arm out. It was pretty awful at the time, but I can laugh about it now. Oh and I never got to eat the the mac and cheese because my dad ate while I was in the hospital :)

Aine @ Something to Chew Over July 6, 2011 at 8:49 am

I love the colour, what a cute bike! Congrats on your new friend :)

Claire July 6, 2011 at 9:13 am

Love Princess Helga! My mom and I share a bike, which is cost-effective and eco-friendly…except when we want to ride together or when I move out and then have to buy my own. I’m thinking a trip to Madison will be in order then!

Margaret July 6, 2011 at 9:22 am

Sweet ride! My bike’s name is El Fantastico Relampago Azul (The fantastic blue lightning). I think he would be best friends with Princess Helga. Hey, maybe they could even love eachother and be novios.

When are you and Madeline getting your hipster asses down to Bsas?

I promise bike rides, hot argentinos, and wild adventures!

Mackenzie @ Whatever, Gatsby July 6, 2011 at 11:00 am

OMG. SHE IS A BEAUT! as are you my dear. girl, you and your bike are equally as vibrant. you make me want to get my hipster on and get me a single speed! i mean, i’m already wearing high waisted shorts, so i might as well go big or go home. xo

Angharad July 6, 2011 at 11:24 am

Biking FTW. Bring it to Minneapolis and we will adventure.

Cait's Plate July 6, 2011 at 11:28 am

Aw LOVE your bike!! And how happy you look on it :) I just recently got a bike too and it’s like the best thing since sliced bread in my eyes!

Lauren http://theclimbingchef.blogspot.com/ July 6, 2011 at 12:55 pm

I love your new bike, and Toms (I have the red ones)! I have a fleet of bikes…. Not to play favorites but I really love my vintage red Schwinn bike. I got it from a family I used to work for, it has a great history and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I used to ride it all over San Francisco even though it is not exactly light :)

lora July 6, 2011 at 1:45 pm

yay you crossed over!!! I ride my bike everywhere!!! 13 miles round trip to yoga, 4 miles to work, 1 mile to the store…i now can say walking is overrated :) lets go on a bike trip togeths.

xoxo
Lolo

Courtney July 6, 2011 at 2:16 pm

U really are too funny holly! love it & your bike & being hipster. Socal.

Nichole July 6, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Love that bike!!! So awesome. I biked more when I lived in the city and even though there are bike paths around my new home, I really haven’t biked much this summer at all :(

Charlotte July 6, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Congrats on Princess Helga! I am actually looking at buying a bike right now…we are so N’SYNC. However, I must point out that I am having some issues with your choice of color combo. Do you not realize that you have yourself a Vikings bicycle? I simply cannot approve. ;-)

Megan (Braise the Roof) July 6, 2011 at 3:37 pm

That is a seriously awesome bike. It’s SO you! I love biking, but haven’t owned one in a while- I have no where to store one! Not to mention I’d probably get mangled trying to negotiate the streets of Chicago. I need all my limbs for beaching, you know. :)

Shelley July 6, 2011 at 7:24 pm

hahah- i love your bike!!!! I want to get a bike at budget bicycle but i’m secretly afraid of riding a bike around campus (lame I know).

ps, have i told you i love your header? it looks great!

Sarah@The Flying ONION July 6, 2011 at 7:27 pm

An absolute, without a doubt, 100% YAY!

LOVE your new bike. Oh my gosh, the colors! They’re so perfect. :D

Stacy @ Say It With Sprinkles July 6, 2011 at 8:04 pm

Yay! I live in a major bike town, so I bike to campus every day & around town as necessary. Loves it! <3

Katie July 6, 2011 at 9:43 pm

That’s the best color bike I’ve ever seen. I love riding my bike (I have the mountain varity), but the chain is broken and I am too lazy to go get it fixed.

Also, I loved your Dr. Seuss reference. I read that book to Babycakes before bedtime tonight.

Sissy #1 July 7, 2011 at 11:11 am

I heart the bike seat- but from awful past experience I recommend getting a bike seat that is purposefully for the womanly ass. Otherwise…ouch. Maybe its just me, but throwin it out there! That or get those biker shorts that have ass padding. :)

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather July 7, 2011 at 11:39 am

Yay how exciting! I just started biking to work this week after a vacation filled with almost 100 miles of biking. Makes me smile. Your new bike rocks… Especially the yellow seat :)

Kristen - Anywhere There's An Airport July 7, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Biking = YAY! But I am petrified to bike in Madrid. I nearly get run over on foot. Biking would add a completely new level of danger that I am simply not ready for. But as soon as I am Stateside I hope to find a hipster as cool as yours. I know, I know… not possible :)

Mammaeverythingtarian July 8, 2011 at 7:53 am

That 400 dolla coulda bought yo momma a nice little frock in London!!!

EmilyK July 8, 2011 at 10:47 pm

I WANT to LOVE biking. Reality = I don’t! Seattle is a great biking town (people seriously think less of you if you don’t like to bike…so I’m care who I admit my anti-biking opinions to…) but I sorta like the bus more. I own a bike but hardly use it [bad emily] I hope you LOVE your bike!

Adam Deane July 9, 2011 at 3:17 am

It has come down to this… I have to stay up until 1:16am to catch up on HealthyE posts… I am okay with this, but I am upset I missed out on the bike purchase!! and in my favorite color! I wish we could co riding together, we would be the coolest work-commuting hipsters in Tom’s shoes ever :) Glad to hear your summer is going swimmingly… < I like that word. I am jealous of all of the concerts, please come to Seattle, come to my workplace and drag me out the door to go hiking… we can eat some raw food first :D

Susan July 10, 2011 at 9:12 am

I’m like totally behind and catching up on everythingtarian posts… But the Portlandia in me could not go past this post without a comment!!! We bike to work here in Pprtland with serious hipster pride… You are amazing and so is your Princess!!

elise July 11, 2011 at 12:19 pm

I AM IN LOVE with princess helga. her purple and yellow are a bit too lakers-esque for my liking, but i can get over it. girl, you so hipster. i heart it muchoooo.

ps random Q, how do you do that font that lets you write on your photos? in your summer lovin’ posts, im very impressed with the cuteness of the picnic break-down.
