Ready to Run

This weekend = oodles of foodie deliciousness.

And the best part? All of it was healthy!  It just goes to show that eating healthy doesn’t have the be bland, tasteless or boring.  That’s one of the main reasons I blog – to hopefully show people that is in fact true.  And to remind others, you don’t have to be healthy all the time (wink, wink).

So, shall we get down to business?

At first, when I read about savory oats on another food blog (don’t remember which one, however), I was quite frankly grossed out by the idea.  Cheesy oats?  With eggs? Mixed with stuff that isn’t sweet?  Oh how times change…

1/3 cup oats
1/3 cup water + 1/3 cup organic skim milk
1 egg (whisked in)
pinch of salt
1 small handful baby spinach
1 tbsp. grated gruyere cheese
1 Sunshine Breakfast patty

It was incredibly satisfying and tasty. Seriously, just a little cheese goes a LONG way in making an uber-creamy, filling breakfast.

Then, to my surprise, the lovely Amie over at The Healthy Apple sent me a lil’ package of goodies!

Thanks lady! I promptly devoured the lemon bar + cashew cookie as pre-run fuel.

Then, I headed out into the glorious 40 degree (yes, 40 degrees IS glorious when you live in Wisconsin in March) weather for a 5-mile run/walk. Ran 1 mile, walked 1 mile, ran 1/2 mile, walked 1 mile, ran 1 mile then finished er’ off with 1/2 mile walk.

When I got home, I was STARVIN’ MARVIN!  Umm, did anybody else use that phrase growing up, or am I the only weird one here?

Enter in more childhood nostalgia…English Muffin Pizzas!

Easy peasy. I took an Ezekiel sprouted grain English muffin and toasted that bad boy up.  Then, I scooped on some spaghetti sauce, garlic salt and sauteed spinach (in EVOO + garlic) before topping it with 1 tablespoon or so grated gruyere cheese and a sprinkle of nutritional yeast.  Served with two more mini Laras…lunch was served!

Yesterday, I also took a homeopathic hint from Angela and embarked on a lil’ afternoon project…

What do all those ingredients make, you ask?

HOMEMADE DEODORANT, of course!

Verdict? AMAZING!  I seriously never would have guessed this would do such a good job at combating the B.O.  I used it before my run and came back smelling just as fresh.  I cleaned the house while baking like a mad woman…the stuff worked better than Degree (which is what I was using before)!  I think I might take Angela’s advice next time and add a drop or two of essential oil to make it smell even yummier.

Dinner consisted of my last Gardein product to review…BBQ Pulled Shreds!

Verdict? Also, AMAZING!  Although my #1 vote still goes to the seven grain crispy tenders, these were flavorful, delicious and the texture was almost spot-on.  In my first review, I mentioned these products were a bit pricey.  However, after eating them and seeing their awesome nutritional stats, I will be purchasing these with my own dough in the future.  Thanks Gardein!

After dinner, I embarked on some baking…

Isn’t that the most lickable thing you’ve ever seen? Don’t worry, I took care of that for y’all ;).

Then, it was off to socialize with some ladies (and gents, for good measure)!

Please ignore my lovely cross-eyed look…I’m just special.

I do have to give a shoutout to my new friend Sama (the gorgeous gal on the right), who I just met last night. She’s a friend of a friend’s girlfriend and is totally an Everythingtarian blog reader!  Oh universe, you are a funny, funny thing.

An appropriate shoutout should also be given to this guy…

Two of them and a glass of wine…to be exact. I guess I should probably throw some love to the hummus + pita as well as the brie + apple pizza consumed at 1:30am last night.  Definitely the classiest late night food I’ve ever had.

With that, I have to make one last announcement…

MY OFFICIAL DECLARATION OF PARTICIPATION IN THE 2010 MADISON 1/2 MARATHON!!!

Okay, that was slightly dramatic.  Deal.

Anyways, in order to shoot for that sub-1:50 pace and make one of my 2010 goals, here is my training schedule (which starts tomorrow!)…

Miss L.V.P. herself introduced me to the wonder that is being a member of Runner’s World.  Registration is free, and their SmartCoach tool will help you customize a plan. Booyakasha. I am SO ready to run.

Alright, pats on the back go out to any of you who have made it this far in this monstrous post.  We’ll see y’all tomorrow with my review of Oscar fashion, some new playlist workout jams, the results of my baking last night and more rambling, per usual.

What is one weird phrase you/your family used growing up? Starvin’ Marvin is just one of about a zillion in my family.

How are YOUR 2010 goals going? Sharing is caring!

Is it bad that i still say starvin marvin? hahahaha. and how well does that home made deodorant work with sweating?

Lynn @ The Actors Diet March 7, 2010 at 11:03 am

thanks for the gardein review! i was wondering what i should get next…

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is March 7, 2010 at 11:06 am

That is awesome girl! Good for you!! :)

I still haven’t tried savory oats. Too scared…

Greg March 7, 2010 at 11:06 am

Two questions about the homemade deodorant. Does it work for guys? Will it make me smell like a lady? Because I’ve had some allergy issues with store bought stuff and this might be a good solution for that, but the gentleman on the TV with the horse led me to believe that I won’t be sexually desirable if I use lady-smelling deodorant.

Susan March 7, 2010 at 11:07 am

Woo! I know you will rock that half mary girl! And way to eat fabulously and healthfully (word?) yesterday.

Thanks for reminding me that I have sunshine burgs in my freezer…

PS – J’adore your red scarf. Wants it.

susan (stepping off the coaster) March 7, 2010 at 11:38 am

oh savory morning oats are YUMMY!! i’m a big fan… i’m much more of a savory than sweet eater, so when i learned about spicy oats at Green Dog Wine, the heavens parted and a new light shone down on my breakfast world!

haha that was pretty dramatic!!

i bought some bagel thins yesterday and i’m thinking bagel pizza is in order… great idea!!

happy oscar watching… and i totally agree with you on “single man”!!! i’m totally pulling for colin firth, but i just think they’re going to give it to jeff daniels, but like a critic said this morning… not really for crazy heart, but for big lebowski (genius performance)… b/c they couldn’t actually give it to him when he made big lebowski b/c it was a comedy!

we shall see…

susan (stepping off the coaster) March 7, 2010 at 11:40 am

jeff daniels??? hahahahaha

BRIDGES, jeff bridges! crimeny… OOPS

Graze With Me March 7, 2010 at 12:03 pm

Suvvy (noun or verb) Means something that is both soft & fuzzy. “Go put on your suvvies before the movie.”

Congrats on the half – I’m always in awe of runners, somehow I doubt I will ever make an announcement similar to this one though.

Have a good Sunday!

Kailey (SnackFace) March 7, 2010 at 12:08 pm

I am currently waiting for my turn to shower in the H-Unit household, so what better way to pass the time than to catch up on YOUR weekend! Love.

OMG HUGE congrats on committing yourself to a half mary. I just ran for 10 minutes and thought I was going to spew. Takes time, takes time.

About the Gardein shredded pork-ish stuff— do I need to try this? Of all the meat dishes I used to eat, pulled pork and BBQ ribs are the only things I occasionally miss. I’m Southern at heart, I suppose. I’m stoked you liked it, though!

I LOVE that special picture of you. I think you looks gorge. And special. Both are good.

OMG weird phrase? OK, how about the things commonly known as hair ties/elastics? Hair hoochies in mi casa. With mamaj around, there are a billion of ridiculous sayings, most of which are rated PG-13 to R. Maybe some NC-17 in there, too.
AH! I just got called for my turn! I’m off!! LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU AND WE NEED MAYJ CATCHING UP!!! xoxoxoxo

Maya March 7, 2010 at 12:12 pm

You sound much more positive! It sounds like this weekend treated you well.

I was born cross eyed. True story. 1/2 my baby photos look ridiculous, and even more cute because of it, if I do say so myself.

When I saw that natural deodorant I thought it would be perfect, too! Glad to see it got a second seal of approval.

And that white plate with the flowers is pretty!

Matt March 7, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I so need to try savory oats!

Evan Thomas March 7, 2010 at 12:30 pm

My grandfather always says “Holy Hannah!” When he’s surprised. I love it

Yes, that all looks delicious AND healthy. Can’t fueling be fun?

You’re going to rock your half just like I hopefully will!

sama March 7, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Hey lady thanks for the shoutout, i’m pretty psyched i made it on the blog! so great meeting you last night, we will have to meet up for some bar scrabble and wine again soon!! ps. super jealous of your late night snacks

Chelsea @ (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) March 7, 2010 at 2:02 pm

The term “Starvin’ Marvin’ reminds me of a pervy 1980’s weatherman nick-named “Stormin’ Norman” in my hometown. Let’s just say, he was caught doing some un-kosher things in a public restroom. He actually worked at the same TV Station as my dad, so my brother and sister once met him at a company picnic before all the crazy stuff went down. Weird!

But I digress, my family has way too many phrases and terms to recount in one comment, so here are just a few prime examples:

Regarding food left out after a dinner/event: “Put it away, don’t let it fester!”
What my great Grandmother thought of hyperactive school children: “They’re viciously savage!”

Way to go on the half-marathon commitment! I know you can do it!

I was wary of savory oats, but I consider you a trustworthy foodie source, so I might just give them a whirl soon. Yours look pretty dope!

Carbzilla March 7, 2010 at 2:14 pm

For some reason, I extended it to “I’m Starvin’ Marvin and his gal pal Sal.”

Maybe I’m just dramatic like that, or I didn’t want Marvin to be starvin’ AND alone.

Congrats on committing to the half!

Mellissa March 7, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Yeah for deciding to run the Half! Go for you :)

Ally (Sweet & Savory) March 7, 2010 at 4:34 pm

In my family growing up we called the tv remote the “flipper”. I have no idea how that came about, and I have since left that phrase behind, b/c if I say it people look at me funny wondering what I’m talking about!

Katie March 7, 2010 at 4:39 pm

How exciting to have a training schedule! I love organized plans like that. I’m kind of a freak.

I always used the term “starvin’ marvin” growing up – and I had totally forgotten about english muffin pizzas – those were a staple in mi casa when I was young.

And a phrase we used “Bedtime for Bonzo” when one was really tired or grumpy. I still use it a lot. :-)

Gabriela (froyolover) March 7, 2010 at 5:29 pm

Holy YUM – amazing eats!
You just gave me some amazing ideas… :D
Have a terrific week, girl!
Brazilian XOXO´s,
Gabriela

Susan March 7, 2010 at 6:47 pm

The “sharing is caring” line just made me snort out loud. Now THAT is a phrase we need to bring back!!

Yay for a half marathon!!! Under 1:50 is such a rockstar goal, good thing you ARE a rockstar ;)

I also want to try that deodorant now. I bought aluminum free stuff once and it literally burned my armpits off. It was bruuuutal.

One last thing, stellar eats this weekend!

Okay. I’m done ;)

Alison March 7, 2010 at 7:32 pm

What a fun day you had! Can you find the Gardein products locally? I meant to ask you that today. I did not see them at the whole foods and forgot to look in the freezer section last time I was at the co-op.

THe deo looks great! Now I know how you’re getting through that big ole’ tub!

Best wishes getting ready for the half!!!

Jenny March 7, 2010 at 8:06 pm

girl you make healthy eating hot. I totes dipped my hand in savory oats in this weekend too! mine don’t look as ballin’ as yours but they were actually pretty legit.

luff you, muffin!

Emily (Healthy Fit Mama) March 7, 2010 at 8:27 pm

I love the Gardein BBQ Shreds! Trader Joe’s makes a pretty good version of those – Chicken-less Pulled Chicken. I haven’t tried the Gardein Tenders. I’ll have to look out for those.

Madeline - Greens and Jeans March 7, 2010 at 9:29 pm

My brother and I definitely still say starvin marvin. We’re cool like that. I am hoping to check off a sub 1:50 half off of my list in 6 weeks! I wish we could pace each other!

Shelley March 7, 2010 at 10:19 pm

ok i just read your last post and that bagel place looks amazing- i hAVE to try that!!! seriously. and those bbq things look really good too.. i love all your meals! you look beautiful in that picture :)

Katie March 8, 2010 at 6:15 am

Woohoo!!! Glad you had a good run, my lady! And mayjuh congrats are in order for signing up for the half. YOu’re gonna rock that bad boy!

Er, when my dogs trips outside are a *success* in both ways, we call it a “total victory.” Gross but true.

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) March 8, 2010 at 6:37 am

Hooray for 1/2 marathon training! You will rock that sub-1:50, I just know it. If you need an East Coast running buddy…just give me a holla.

Andddd I love that you devoured all of the mini lara bars on Saturday. I’d totally do that too! I finished off a box of nature’s path pb-choco granola bars in 2 days, haha.

Katrina March 8, 2010 at 7:00 am

Starvin Marvin makes me think of the song Shake Ya Tail Feather!! lol.

Oh, I’m from Newfoundland and we have MANY funny sayings! A coworker of mine always says “Jeepers in the garden” when she has a problem at work. That cracks me up!! Some others are: “Slow as molasses.”, “How ya doin me old trout?”, “How’s ya getten on now?”, “I spose’ by!”, “O me nerves you got me drove” and many, many more. We’re a unique bunch of people :), haha.

My 2010 goals are ok so far :):):)!

Therese March 8, 2010 at 10:22 am

You have been missing out on the savory oats action! I am a firm believer!

Hello intense marathon training. Get it gurl.

Oh and I WOULD NOT be brave enough to try homemade deoderant so kudos to you my friend ;)

samantha March 8, 2010 at 10:25 am

woo half marathon! that running plan looks awesome, i totally wish i had been better about mine. also – brie and apple pizza? get. in. mah. belly.

Low March 8, 2010 at 12:41 pm

So glad you hopped on the savory oat train! Love them! Yay for the run and for completing your half mary goal!

Emily (A Nutritionist Eats) March 8, 2010 at 1:08 pm

I’m kind of tempted to try the deodorent…..I just have never really been happy with the “natural” deodorents so only use them in the winter. I trust you though!
:)

Allison (Eat Clean Live Green) March 8, 2010 at 3:40 pm

So much to say….

I love the phrase Starvin Marvin!

Good luck with the half! My goals are going good – I’m planning on running my first half this summer :)

And I’m very intrigued by the deodorant!

Michelle March 8, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Hooolllyy you tried the mcD’s shamrock shake!! you rebel you!!!! I LOVE seasonal stuff too but i haven’t yet tried that shake due to the neon green color. So half a cup of shake probably means it is pretty pretty tasty. Mmmm I might have to follow in your naughty footsteps. :P Hope your weekend ROCKED Hollypie!!! :)

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) March 8, 2010 at 5:24 pm

1) I’m so intrigued by the fact you made homemade deoderant! haha…how cool is that? I need to try this.

2) You are going to do amazing on the 1/2! And I love the plan you’re following too. Three days of running + cross training always seemed to work the best for me when I was running (i.e., no injuries or feeling overworked!)

3) You always do such a great job of showing healthy foods can taste amazing while still showing that other foods can fit into a healthy lifestyle too. Love it! :D

Hope you’re having an awesome Monday! :D

K March 8, 2010 at 5:59 pm

YAY for healthy, foodie deliciousness!! I need to get my hands on that Gardein product – I used to love pulled pork sandwiches in my meat eating days. Savory oats = DELISH! I’m impressed with the deodorant! Nicely done :)

Yahoo for your 1/2! Good luck training!

Jenna March 8, 2010 at 7:28 pm

yess i have heard of starvin marvin before!
glad you liked those oats!

Jenny March 8, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Totally jealous of all the Larabar lovin’ you guys are getting, I want miniature ones!!

Ah drinking+late night…My late night snack consisted of trail mix and cheerios saturday night. let’s just say I woke up with a Cheerio in my hair..oops ;)

CONGRATS on your marathon decision! You rock, can’t wait to support you along the way!

Maggie @ Fit.Fun.Food March 8, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Great post, girl! Your food amazing and inventive! I’ve been really impressed with meat substitutes lately, even though I’m not vegetarian. You should try Trader Joe’s veggie masala burgers! They taste so decadent but they’re full of veggies and other good stuffs!

elise March 10, 2010 at 12:40 pm

omg. where to begin. mini laras. gardein pulled pork. english muffin pizzas. homemade deodorant. you are a rock star. i am playing mega catch up on your posts now, but im constantly reminded why i adore you…with each and every post. gah. epic weekend.
