She's Like the Wind

Or rather, time is like the wind because this day absolutely positivefrickinlutely flew by.  But I do still love a good “Dirty Dancing” reference.  Nobody puts Baby in the corner :).

Breakfast started out fantastically, thanks to the lovely Sarah from Running to Slow Things Down.  You see, this genius of a gal took the standard breakfast cookie recipe and turned it into Breakfast Drops!  (BTW – I can totally see why she didn’t call them Breakfast Balls – there is just something inherently wrong with that ;)).  Mine were of the ol’ strawberry + coconut variety, and I loved every last drop!

Like I said, the morning flew by and before I knew it – bam! – 11:30am and my tummy was rumbling!  Good thing for another killer sammie (same as yesterday) – 2 sliced toasted Ezek, 1/2 smashed avocado, cherry tomatoes, spinach + yellow mustard.  Along with two clementines, it was a good, satisfying lunch.

Work was supa busy today!  I would look at the clock and suddenly two hours had flown by.  That like never happens.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get out on a lunch walk today but instead worked on a freelance writing project.  Sometimes a girl has got to make sacrifices!

Luckily, my snack made up for the missed walk.  You know how I haven’t exactly been diggin’ the Zoe bars?  Well, I take that back because this Chocolate Delight bar was well – delightful!  It didn’t have any of the funny after tastes the peanut butter and peanut butter chocolate ones did and was perfectly chocolatey.  Nice work Zoe!

CIMG4144

Since my 9 mile run was planned for after work, I had snacky #2 around 3:30pm as pre-run fuel.  The standard combo: Stonyfield vanilla + blueberries + Zoe’s Cranberry Currant granola.  I think my favorite way to eat Zoe granola is as a topper in yogurt – it gives the whole thing the perfect sweet crunch!

After work, I’m not going to lie – I was dreading the 9 mile run.  However, I tried not to think about it.  Instead, I got dressed, laced up the tennies and headed out the door (before I could rationalize not going, because if you give me long enough – I can rationalize ANYTHING).  The first mile was a lil’ rough but I fell into a groove after that.  However, it got raging hot out, my yogurt combo wasn’t sitting too well, and in the end, I had to stop at just over 5 miles.  I walked for another 1/2 mile or so, then guzzled this baby:

CIMG4148

The Vitamin Water 10 was good – I am still a bit skeptical just how “naturally sweetened” it is.  They use rebiana (stevia extract) along with some others I am not sure about.  Anybody heard of erythritol or crystalline fructose?

I came home a sweaty beast and made this colorful concoction:

CIMG4152

Tempeh Thai Red Curry!  Totally delish!  I made dinner for myself, my sissy and her boyfriend and it got rave reviews all around.  My sister – who FYI has a sensitive stomach, doesn’t like anything “weird” or “organic” and is not a spice monster – even ate it.  You don’t know how big of a day this is for me!  The mix included:

brown rice
TJ’s Thai Red Curry Sauce
bean sprouts
onion
tomato
carrots
spinach
1 pkg. three grain organic tempeh

And what’s dinner without somethin’ sweet?

CIMG4154

That would be 1/2 Monster Cookie to be exact.

Soooo…this gal will be running her 9 miles on Sunday instead.  Ugh, lil’ upset over the run, but I think I might have the ultimate pancake concoction tomorrow morning that is going to blow Miss Chocolate-Covered Katie’s pancake contest out of the water!  Stay tuned tomorrow for all the monster (hint, hint!) goodness ;).

Shower, recipe research, grocery store, freelance writing, possible SYTYCD results show and off to bed.  Woowoo for the weekend – tomorrow is Friday!

Whatcha all up to this weekend?  I’m heading off to my friend’s cabin – holllllaaaa!

Haha…I came close to calling them breakfast balls and then decided otherwise. ;)

That’s still a great job on the run! Especially when it’s hot out..ick! Its always better to listen to your body when it’s feeling just so-so on a run, I think. :)

Can’t wait to see the breakfast pancakes you have planned for tomorrow! Happy Early Friday! :D

I so can’t wait to see that pancake concoction!

I think erythritol or crystalline fructose are naturally occurring sugars in fruit that don’t have calories because they aren’t digested properly.

Anne K. July 9, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Those breafast drops look so yummy!

I like Vitamin Water 10. I’ve def. heard of Erythritol–it’s a sugar alcohol made from fruit (here’s a link: http://altmedicine.about.com/od/herbsupplementguide/a/erythritol.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erythritol). They use it in Zevia and you can also buy it as a sweetener. I’ve had it, but it’s only 70% as sweet as sugar and has a weird cooling feeling on your tongue. I prefer good quality stevia.

I hadn’t heard of crystalline fructose, but I looked it up. Apparently there’s some debate about it, cause it’s a sweetener processed from corn but enriched with fructose– kinda like HFCS. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystalline_fructose and http://articles.latimes.com/2009/feb/02/health/he-nutrition2) So that’s a little sketch.

Can’t wait to see the pancakes!

Try running first thing in the morning before it gets hot. There is no way I could run in the afternoon. I would melt on the pavement!

9 miles?! damn sam – you’re awesome!

breakfast balls.. *insert immature 12 year old giggle here*

<3

Abby July 9, 2009 at 9:17 pm

You said balls…tee hee.

Anyway, when I was younger I thought “She’s Like the Wind” was “She Likes the Wind.” I have never claimed to have been a child genius…

I wouldn’t stress too much about the run. You know your body and have to listen to the warning signs. Better to stop before a problem than to run right into one.

Oh wow those breakfast drops sound like a fun way to eat breakfast :)

Clementines! I finished a bag of them yesterday. There’s this adorable consignment shop in Richmond called clementine.

Atleast you laced up your shoes and did what you could, girl! Its hard to be out in the heat too.

I had some tempeh thai stuff from whole foods today but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t compare to your recipe. Actually I’m positive because I didn’t like it.

Tonight I watched so you think you can dance for the first time ever! The guy they sent him was insanely talented.

This weekend I’m still gonna be at the resort. I took an actual nap today! I wasn’t even in the sun (the sun makes me sleepy whenever I layout).

Have an awesome Friday suga!

the breakfast drops look awesome! And so does the dinner…SO colorful! LOVE it!
And wow…9 miles? It’s always painful at the first mile, but afterwards you get into the rhythm and start really enjoying it! Remind yourself that next time you feel apprehensive about a run! :-)

Sylvia?! Yes, Micky…How do you call your loverboy?! Come here loverboy! And if he doesn’t answer?! Oh loverboy…And if he STILL doesn’t answer? I simply say…LOVE DIRTY DANCING!!

Breakfast balls is a better name – I mean drops sound okay but I like balls ;)

brandi July 10, 2009 at 8:52 am

uh oh….monster cookie pancakes? I guess I better get working on more recipes :) I can’t wait to see them!

i love the breakfast balls, and yes, I will call them balls.

Wowzers on the nine miles – don’t feel bad about not finishing it. Always best to listen to your body, right? You can make up for it on sunday. I HATE when you’re just not feeling it though – so frustrating isn’t it?! Grr.

The Tempeh Thai Red Curry looks simply divine love. Simply divine! I need to bust out the cook book my thai cooking instructor gave me and cook up a Thai frenzy…thanks for inspiring me!!

Happy Friday! Have an awesome time at the cabin! It’s Dan’s birthday tomorrow so we’ll be having a big crazy celebratory time! Woo!

Your run sounded fantastic! Anything over 1 mile is a major accomplishment to me! haha.

Your breakfast looks soo cute! I must try those!

buffmuffy July 10, 2009 at 9:55 am

Oh you have inspired me to do some research.
Here is a link and check out my site later for more info on crystalline fructose!

Haha. Here are my secrets to getting up early..

-I WANT to get up. Running is my favorite part of the day, so I usually leap of bed!
-I hate running in the heat.
-The coffee is on a timer so it is piping hot when I get up.
-I am a loser and go to bed at 10. LOL.

Kailey July 10, 2009 at 10:18 am

wow 9 miles thats awesome!!
and your curry just looks amazing :D

jenngirl July 10, 2009 at 10:25 am

Ugh hittin’ up a cabin this weekend?! Fun fun! I’ll be hanging around here, but going out and partying because well, it’s summer and the weekend! ;)

Angharad July 10, 2009 at 11:11 am

P.S. You can totally get digestives here!! They are spenny and hard-ish to find but we once found them in Rainbows!! Search and ye shall find.

Holly July 10, 2009 at 11:55 am

Thanks Matt – I am going to channel you next week when I need to get up early and go running!

Holly July 10, 2009 at 11:56 am

Thank you dear – I knew something was fishy!

Holly July 10, 2009 at 11:56 am

Babbbyy…ohhhh babbyyyy…my sweeettt babbbyyy…you’re the one (guitar rift)…

traci July 10, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Ahhh I felt the same way last night on my run Holly. 1st mile was horrible, I was so tired. I kicked in and felt OK and ended up with 5 miles too. During the last 1/2 mile a woman started to pass me running and being the super competive girl I am my adrenaline took over. There was no way I was going to be passed! Good way to finish up the run. So a neighbor saw me finishing up and asked “WHY do you run so much?” Ummm because I love it and its good for me? It’s funny…people who are not into fitness have no clue how good it feels.

Have a great weekend all. Weather is sunny & nice here in Boston and the Tall Ships are here so we’ll be heading out on the boat to catch a glimpse of them.

Tay July 10, 2009 at 2:34 pm

VERRRRRY interesting on the crystalline fructose. When I noticed that was in it, I too looked it up and came up with the conclusion that it was basically (if not worse than) HFCS. I was a little disappointed. So now I generally try to stay away from the drink, and may rarely have one.

Another pet peeve of mine? Sobe0 water! OK, they say 0 calories, but there are 15 grams of carbohydrates in every bottle (6 per serving). There are 4 calories per gram of carbohydrate. That means that each serving should have 24 calories, and each bottle should have 60 calories. Yet, they claim 0 per serving. I’m trying to figure that one out as well…

Lynn (The Actors Diet) July 10, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Breakfast drops! Brilliant! I never stop learning from blogs….
