Spice Up Your Life

in breakfast,dinner,eating out,lunch,positivity

“When you’re feeling sad and low, we will take you where you gotta go.  Smiling, dancing, everything is free – all you need is positivity [and preferably a Diet Coke].”

Who knew the Spice Girls could be so deep?

Yes, I said Spice Girls. And yes, their 1996 debut album “Spice” was the very first CD I bought with my own money. That and Hanson’s “mmmBop.” Thankfully, my musical tastes have evolved since 6th grade.

Anyways, all the positivity going on my last post got me singing this song this morning, and I couldn’t make the infectious beats stop. I mean, “Spice Up Your Life” has been in my head ALL. DAY. LONG. But can I tell you a secret? I’m totally kind of loving it.

In the spirit of the May of Positivity Challenge, I woke up at 4:30am and instead of getting uber-angry at the fact I couldn’t fall back asleep, I got work done. With the help of AB+J toast, a banana and a cuppa apple cider tea at 5:15am, I barreled through some e-mails, cleaned my kitchen and attended to other tasks neglected by the fact I was out of town this past weekend.

Mind you, this meant that by 10:30am, I was ready to gnaw my left arm off in hunger (I need to preserve my right hand to write and lift my coffee cup to my lips).

In an unusual twist of events, I actually worked outside the office today delivering newsletters to houses. This meant I spent the day walking in the gorgeous sunlight and had a built in workout. It also meant I devoured this Holy Guacamole bagel sandwich (totally unoriginal name) + Garden Salsa Sun Chips ridiculously fast…

Naturally, I was still hungry after eating.  Enter in an array of snacks eaten throughout the afternoon:

A $0.49 cent vanilla cone from McDonalds after walking for three hours?  Don’t mind if I do…

My goal for dinner was to make something that could be ready to eat and devour ASAP.  Yes, somedays we must lower our standards in the name of hunger + convenience.  Today, it was a bowl of simple savory oats alongside carrots + salsa

1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup water + 1/2 cup organic skim milk
hearty pinch of salt
2 T shredded Raspberry Bellavitano cheese
2 overeasy eggs

Since we are committing ourselves to positivity this month, I have decided at the end of each post to spice up my life by writing down at least one positive thing about my day. If you can, I encourage you to do the same – whether here or just on a scrap piece of paper at home.

Today’s Nugget of Positivity: ALL OF YOU READERS! Because when I get down, all I have to do is read your lovely comments and extremely gracious + kind compliments to bring myself up again.  Excuse the mayjuh cheese factor on this one, because it’s true!

In honor of my homegirls (especially Sporty because she was my fave)…

What is your favorite spice? Cinnamon. Hands down.

If you were to become the 6th member of the Spice Girls, what would your spice name be? This is really tough, but I think I am going to go with Funky Spice.  Not because I smell weird, but because if I was a Spice Girl, I would be gettin’ my dance on and bringin’ the funk onstage.

Coco @ Opera Girl Cooks May 10, 2010 at 9:35 pm

Umm, I loved mmmBop. I may or may not play it on guitar sometimes to cheer myself up. I also may or may not have screamed all the lyrics while hiking in the pouring rain a few months ago. That album is the best! No shame, girl, no shame.

Amy B @ Second City Randomness May 10, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Hello… my name is Sassy Spice.

And someone else quoted a Spice Girls song a few weeks ago… making me even more upset I sold my Spice Girls cd forever ago… :( dang…

Jennifer May 10, 2010 at 9:56 pm

Spunky Spice for sure, because I just seem to say what I think and I don’t really care if people do a double take! :
Favorite spice would have to be cinnamon! I dump it on errrething!

Maggie @ Fit.Fun.Food May 10, 2010 at 9:57 pm

I’m gonna be unoriginal and pick Ginger Spice, because I’m a redhead. I love, love, love your dinner recipe! I gotta try that!

Ilana May 10, 2010 at 10:00 pm

Hell. Yes. Spice Girls! Definitely loading them onto the playlist for tomorrow…thanks for the inspiration :)
I’d call myself Scary Spice but she already exists. What about… um… Hottie Spice. Yes. Since Posh is Posh now, instead of Sexy. I’ll take it.

(Seriously I watch Spice World more than once a year. Guilty pleasure doesn’t begin to describe it)

amanda May 10, 2010 at 10:02 pm

love overeasy eggs. they are so yummy.

spice girls speak volumes. their jams never get old.
i would be feisty spice. i’d keep the girls on their toes.

Katie May 10, 2010 at 10:12 pm

I performed a Spice Girl’s song for my 6th grade talent show. I still get embarrassed when I hear “All that she wants” …I was Posh Spice, which just DOES NOT fit my personality at all. I think my best friend made me do it. I can’t remember.

I love cinnamon the most as well, but cumin is a close second.

Now, I think I’d be Frumpy Spice…maybe I could just wear flip flops, sweat pants, and my hair up on a pony tail?

lo May 10, 2010 at 10:25 pm

oh my love. You deserve ice cream every day…not just for walking 3 hours ;) I loved lvoed loved Spice Girls. I was a wee 4th/5th grader when they were at their prime and I knew every lyric, song, dance and ate those amazing SPice GIrl Lollipops like it was my job. I also had my 11th bday to the spice girls movie and I remember eating Chinese food prior to spicing up my life….whoa memories. So, to go along with spices, my favorite has to be cinnamon or something spicy, like cayenne, or something. Now if i were a spice girl, Id totally be Clumsy Spice, Nutty Spice or Chatty Spice….

love u lots holly bear.

Erica May 10, 2010 at 10:29 pm

So wonderful that you got to enjoy some of the beautius weather today! 4:30 is my crazy normal wake up time. Tomorrow I get to sleep in a bit an I’m super excited (hooray for 6 AM). You’re making me crave eggs for din din tomorrow. Over easy rocks. Oh and I <3 the spice girls. Have that album…can't decide on a favorite song…they're all too good :) Favorite spice: red pepper, Spice girl name: Pint Sized Spice :)

Jenna May 10, 2010 at 10:42 pm

I was obsessed with spice girls! I loved their movie spice world!!

Madeline - Greens and Jeans May 10, 2010 at 10:54 pm

My friend Rudy and I used to joke about how if the Spice Girls ever did a reunion tour we would have to go. And then they did. So we did. And it was awesome.

Molly May 10, 2010 at 11:08 pm

Please don’t judge the fact that I still have Hanson on my ipod…and Vitamin C. I need some updates. Please also be aware that I return to my humble abode tomorrow. And the post office. I’ve been carrying a little somethin’ somethin’ for you sistah for exactly 19 days in hopes of mailing it, along with 3 birthday cards, a mother’s days note, and another package. Talk about ridic. I would be sassy spice. I tend to have an attitude at times. No judgments. Love you girl! Love this month of poz. vibes!

Run Sarah May 10, 2010 at 11:23 pm

Productive at 4:30am?! Impressive! I would be Shorty Spice…but my fav spice is also cinnamon. Goes with everything!

Laura May 10, 2010 at 11:40 pm

Sporty was my fave too! Even though I was not at all sporty back then and would not have admitted to owning their cd’s.

My favourite spice would have to be Cumin, I go through a packet a week I think, I adore Indian & Mexican food. Cinnamon would be a close second though.

As for a Spice Girl name, maybe Sweary Spice? I tend to swear at the most inappropriate moments.

Special K May 11, 2010 at 12:06 am

I totally woke up at 4 am yesterday and the whole day, felt off kilter, and somewhat upset withmyself for being off kilter. I know I didn’t fuel myself properly. But I did buy myself some really cute shoes, and orderd a cute summer bag (I have to admit…miss Target living overseas).
Holly, if you read my blog, you know about my recent “trauma” and after reading yours, am committed to stay positive.
My Spice girl name?
Go-Go Spice (cuz I am always moving…hopefully ahead!)

Kailey (SnackFace) May 11, 2010 at 12:07 am

Ohhhh how I love thee! I want that bagel so badly right now. My hunger is off the chain. It’s 1am and I just had a potato roll with peanut butter. POSITIVE note, fa sho.

Oooh I’d totally be Fierce Spice. Snack Spice during the day, though. Fierce Spice is Posh times 90586895.

Fave spice really is cinnamon, too! It’s so amazing.

I’m off to put my never-ending hunger to bed. I don’t think anything will stop it tonight.

LOVE YOU!!!! Sorry my gchat died today :(

claire May 11, 2010 at 12:38 am

Oh the spice girls..I definitely was posh spice for halloween one year and then ginger spice the next…risque for such a youngster. I honestly can’t think of a good one for me…I will have to come back after more sleep!

I just bought bagels tonight and they were CINNAMON raisin, obviously my fave spice indeed!

Courtney (Pancakes & Postcards) May 11, 2010 at 2:43 am

That was my first CD too! I am not (completely) embarassed to admit I still listen to it when the mood strikes once in a while :) I always had to be Ginger Spice as a girl because I had red hair, and I was always REALLY bitter because I was such a tomboy and I wanted to be Sporty.

That being said, I got the most amazing once in a lifetime experience EVER in december of 2007 when I got to go see the Spice Girls Reunion Tour at Staples Center in LA. It was basically thousands of 20-something girls (and a few boyfriends dragged along) singing every single word. Kind of amazing.

And… cinnamon all the way. I have four different varieties in my kitchen right now.

Little Bookworm May 11, 2010 at 3:12 am

I don’t think I’ve ever commented before but I love this post and the idea of positive notes at the end. :)

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is May 11, 2010 at 5:39 am

Cinnamon and nutmeg! Oh and I love smoked paprika. I’m so indecisive.

sophia May 11, 2010 at 6:01 am

Wait…WHAT?! 49 cents for a cone? It costs me $1.29 here! A rip off! I’m flabbergasted!

I never got into the Spice Girls…I think they drew my curiosity for a few seconds, and then I turned back to my Sailor Moon. lol.

Lauren May 11, 2010 at 6:01 am

Okay…this is SO WERID!!!!!!! I have never had savory oats but for some reason I have been thinking of them for days now. I want to make them for dinner one night this week, so I kid you not, RIGHT BEFORE I read this post of yours, I googled, Savory Oats and have been looking for ideas. A moment later, I read your post and BAM! Savory oats! What is that? That happens to me all the time!!! Its like my blog friends can read my mind. I love that! :)

Hope you are having the best week Holly.

The Fit Collegiate May 11, 2010 at 7:01 am

I love McDonald’s Soft Serve! The other night we were out to a nice restaurant in Milwaukee, and perusing the dessert menu, I was thoroughly uninspired. Creme brulee and flourless chocolate cake just don’t appeal to me. Reflecting on my favorite desserts, I realized none of them are particularly fancy: DQ Blizzards, McDonald’s McFlurries, Sara Lee cookie cakes, and Funfetti Cake. Hahahaha…so classy.

And yum! Your bagel sandwich looks delicious!

Julia @ www.britbride.com May 11, 2010 at 7:18 am

Just found your blog – I think its GREAT!

My fave spice – Coriander – does that count (I know its a herb)… OR VARIETY (the spice of life!!)
My spice girl name would be Blonde Spice.

Loved also ypur positivity post below. I am going to try turning negatives into positives too.

Maya May 11, 2010 at 7:30 am

I LOVED the spice girls! Remember their movie? How ridiculous was that? They had frickin aliens in that silly movie! I loved it, of course.

Jenna May 11, 2010 at 8:20 am

Seriously, how freakin’ good are McD’s cones? I find myself craving them often times. :)

Cinnamon is my favorite spice, too. Sweet or savory, all the way.

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) May 11, 2010 at 8:29 am

Can I just say how much I love your positivity?? :D

Favorite spice is definitely cinnamon for me too. Although ginger and cloves are up on that list too. :D

Katharina May 11, 2010 at 8:53 am

WHAT?! I did not know that they have .49 cent cones at McD’s. Perfect for hot stand still weather. Oof! Anywho, I’ve missed you. It’s been weird keeping up with my friends lives but things are starting to wind down. Phew!

1. I love cinnamon as well!

2. Oh man… I would have to be Cutie Spice lol. Somehow whatever I do people always say “you’re SOOO cute!” I don’t see it but it’s not a bad thing, right??

Kacy May 11, 2010 at 9:12 am

Aww, my first CD was Myriah Carey Fantasy. But Spice Girls were GOOD. I miss those days.

Positive nugget for yesterday: All my peeps survived the storms.
Positive nugget for today: My green monster was delicious.

Crunchy Granola Gal May 11, 2010 at 10:02 am

dude, now i have “say you’ll be there” in my head – i had to watch it on youtube… twice. sigh. also, in other spicy news, i was reading an old journal of mine from the age of eleven. i wrote: “today I got the spice girls CD and listened to wannabe fifty times.” PRICELESS!! anywho, i always wake up at the ass-crack of dawn and can’t get back to sleep. and i secretly love mcdonald’s ice cream cones. twins, obvi.

samantha May 11, 2010 at 10:12 am

i loved hanson and the spice girls so much that i borrowed my friend liz’s cassette tapes and didn’t give them back for THREE MONTHS! my mom wised up and bought me my own… i also listen to hanson’s
“penny and me” on a pretty regular basis.

my spice girl name would totally be freaky spice, not because i’m freaky, but because i dance like a FREAKZOID.

Lisa May 11, 2010 at 10:13 am

every boy and every girl spice up your life, people of the world spice up your life!!

My first CD was probably Backstreet Boys. Loved them. I was Nick’s girl for sure.

Lauren @ Health on the Run May 11, 2010 at 10:31 am

I’m totally with you on the positive May challenge!! I need a little more positivity in my life :)

Also, I have to jump on the cinnamon bandwagon. It’s by far my favorite spice and I add it to (almost) everything.

And my Spice Girl name would have to be Spazzy Spice…because I’m sadly uncoordinated and my “dancing” is often more spastic than graceful (though I like to pretend otherwise!)

elise May 11, 2010 at 10:34 am

can i be hummus spice? haha. that cd was pretty epic. my first cd was dookie by greenday.
im all about the positivity :) and savory oats. mmmmm

Susan May 11, 2010 at 10:42 am

I love your Month of Positivity – I’m all in! There’s so much to be happy about right now: the change in weather, summer movies coming out, hockey playoffs, fresh produce, cute old ladies in pastel-colored pants walking their dogs…okay I’m done.

BESIDES cinnamon of course, I’d have to go with curry. Although I go through spice “phases”.

I wouldn’t be “Curry Spice” though.

kalli@fitandfortysomething May 11, 2010 at 11:28 am

fun blog! i found you from Madeline over at greens and jeans………i think i would be called sensitive spice :)

janetha May 11, 2010 at 12:18 pm

yep. that song is going to be in my head all day now. thanks for that! but wow, who knew the lyrics were so profound? anywho, that bagel sandwich is glorious and i cannot believe you woke up at 4:30. give me your early morning genes.

mcdonalds soft serve is the shit. there, i said it.

i love it when you get cheesy. goudalicious holly.

1. cinnamon for sweet, cumin for savory.
2. cereal spice.

Angharad May 11, 2010 at 12:39 pm

Cheeky Spice.
Cheeky face. Cheeky sense of humour? Is that cheesy enough for you?!

Ummm spices. I loooove spices! Let’s see. Cumin.

Love you! xx

Naomi(www.onefitfoodie.com) May 11, 2010 at 12:43 pm

ohh what a good question

i think I will go with foodie spice!!!! obvious reasons!

Dawn (HealthySDLiving) May 11, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Cinnamon for SURE!
Oh my goooooodness…I used to perform concerts in my living room to the Spice Girls! Oh YEAAAAAA!
Hmmm I’d be Sweet Spice….for lack of a more creative name!

Sami May 11, 2010 at 1:27 pm

yesssss, cinnamon. a girl after my own heart. i could put that on anyyyything. and for that matter, pretty much DO. :)

Kate May 11, 2010 at 2:10 pm

so i may or may not have entered a lip sync contest at my county fair with some girlfriends and we may or may not have performed spice up your life. your truly may or may not have dressed as sporty spice. and if we indeed did enter said contest we may or may not have won $100.00 as first place champs which we may or may not have spent the following evening at the stock car races. oh the joys of rural minnesota life!

Andrea@WellnessNotes May 11, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Glad you were so productive early in the morning! I got up at 5:00 a.m today as well and got some work done; it felt good! :) And now I know that I should pick up an ice cream cone soon… ;)

Erica D May 11, 2010 at 2:53 pm

My positive:
I braved the unreasonable cold of a Colorado morning in May (only 30 F at 7 AM? really?) to do an intense sprint/jog/stairs workout, which always leaves me feeling powerful and ready for the day. And before I showered, I made a peanut butter/banana/cinnamon smoothie for my roomate (for only 3 more days, waaah!)

Favorite spice:
Cinnamon! My supply is depleting…uh oh.

I was always designated Sporty spice was I was younger because I was the most athletic, but secretly I wanted to be Posh. Now I AM Posh, hair and all, haha! I therefore introduce myself as….NICE SPICE :)

runnerforever May 11, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Is salt a spice? If so, then I think that it is my favorite! Otherwise, I am with you on cinnamon.

Mellissa May 11, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Thanks, now that darn song is in my head. I think I would be Strong Spice :)

BroccoliHut May 11, 2010 at 5:28 pm

Ah man, you’re making me crave soft serve now. YUM.
Favorite spice is probably chili powder–I put it in pretty much anything.

Adj (Tattoos & Champagne) May 12, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Oh, ginger – hands down. It’s earthy and spicy; you can use it in baked goods (like pumpkin pie cookies) or to kick up a soup broth. Hells bells – it even helps cure a cold! What’s NOT to love?

Susan May 13, 2010 at 8:54 am

I LOVED the Spice Girls when I was in the sixth grade. I just woke up – so nothing negative has happened in my day yet, which is a good thing I suppose!

My favourite spice is cumin. I put it in everrrything. And I think I’d be Awkward Spice haha :P
