Ten Random Things

Original, huh?

Literally, this post is a list of ten things. My creativity is maxed out for the day, and I still have several hours of freelance writing ahead of me. I’m crossing my fingers my genius is in this dirty, clothes-strewn room of mine and something interesting comes to me while clacking away on this keyboard.

(1) Food for the soul. You know your day is going to be good when a fabulous blogger sends you an e-mail with the perfect inspiration to start your morning:

“That’s just your ego, trying to make sure it stays in charge. This is what your ego does. It keeps you feeling separate, keeps you with a sense of duality, tries to convince you that you’re flawed and broken and alone instead of whole. But how does that serve me? It doesn’t serve you. Your ego’s job isn’t to serve you. Its only job is to keep itself in power. And right now, your ego’s scared to death cuz it’s about to get downsized…Pretty soon your ego will be out of work, and your heart’ll be making all the decisions. So your ego’s fighting for its life, playing with your mind, trying to assert its authority, trying to keep you cornered off in a holding pen away from the rest of the universe. Don’t listen to it.”  Eat, Pray, Love (pg. 140)

We could all use more Liz Gilbert + Kailey H. in our lives :).

(2) Overnight Oats are the easiest, most delicious ready-on-the-go breakfast ever. Seriously. If you haven’t tried this cool, refreshing combo yet, please do.

1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup 2% plain Greek yog
1/2 cup organic skim milk
1 packet NuNaturals stevia

~ soaked overnight ~

3/4 cup strawberries
2 T Vanilla Almond Galaxy Granola
sprinkle of ground flax
almond buttah

(3) Did I mention how much I am loving overnight oats these days? Because I am. A lot.

(4) Thank you to Bob and everyone at Simply Bags for offering to send me a cute beach farmer’s market bag made of environmentally-friendly materials – including the cutest rope handle! I love the fact the bag is made from ‘green’ materials. Quite frankly, it astounds me how much we DON’T recycle + reuse in this world. Hmmm…I sense a future challenge coming on…

(5) Cheese is good, but cheese + dried fruit is even better. Seriously, this Sartori Raspberry Bellavitano is a slice of artisan cheese heaven.  Nutty and creamy, its a parmesan + cheddar hybrid that’s soaked in New Glarus Raspberry Tart Ale for a subtle sweetness. More like amazingness.

(6) This is perhaps the most random post I’ve ever written. Well, maybe besides this one.

(7) Why don’t salads ever fill me up? Even though this salad contained grilled chicken, gorgonzola, walnuts, basil, snap peas and other yummies from Marigold Kitchen, which are seemingly protein-filled foods that should in theory fill my belly up…

…I immediately got back to work and scarfed an AB+J sandwich I had conveniently packed because I forgot we had an office lunch outing today with some former interns. Everything happens for a reason, right?

(8) FYI: Madison Bloggers & Readers Dinner Meet-Up. May 28th @ Bluephies. 8pm. Be there or be square. Speaking of dinner, I ate pickles, more apricots & roasted broccoli + spaghetti sauce. No lie.

(9) PLEASE watch this 90-second video for my BFF’s fiancee! Maxx is a filmmaker (totally cool, I know), and he & his film amigos entered a MacGruber Video Contest.  If you don’t know, MacGruber is the uber-hilarious character made popular on SNL, so this video is definitely NOT one you want to watch at work.

Scroll down and watch “The Reptile Handler” by Eric Ornelas. The more views they get, the better chance they have to win $10,000! Plus, I swear the video is hilarious (and awesomely inappropriate).

(10) Today’s Nugget of Positivity: LOST. Jacob & The Man in Black. Two episodes left. Intensity.

Tell me one random thing from your day. Please humor me and make me feel better about my seemingly unending amount of randomness.

Chivalry is not yet dead; I went to coffee with a guy friend/ex-lover and he didn’t hesitate to pay for my chai :)

Matt May 11, 2010 at 9:32 pm

I like random :)

Molly May 11, 2010 at 9:37 pm

After a 19-day hiatus, I’ve returned to the office after arriving back to Hirosaki via night bus and came directly to work…without sleeping, b-fast, showering, or combing my hair. I should probably not be allowed to sit at work in these treacherous conditions, however, I don’t think I’m that lucky to be sent home. Thank God tomorrow will be a new day ;-) And thank God my travels were amazing and totally worth my current state. Love you girl! Love the randomness too!

Julie @savvyeats May 11, 2010 at 9:39 pm

A. Just had some of that Raspberry Bellavitano cheese tonight.

B. Hooray for the Bluephies meetup!

The Fit Collegiate May 11, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Ahh, I love Bluephie’s! We always take my grandma there when we come in to Madison to visit her, because it’s just down the road from her house. Wish I could join ya’all!

Alice May 11, 2010 at 9:54 pm

A) I watched Glee

B) I shameless begged my diet coach to add Lara Bars to my food line ups.

Still waiting..

Erica May 11, 2010 at 9:54 pm

Lost was fabulous – as always! A very interesting episode for sure. That is the cutest reusable bag ever! SO perfect for the summer farmers market. Do you like overnight oats?? I’m confused ;)

amanda May 11, 2010 at 10:05 pm

random facts are fun…and fill up space.
that salad looks good, but i’m with you. they rarely fill me up.

my random fact…i could watch hours upon hours of svu episodes. which i am doing right now. but it scares me out the wahzoo and gives me the major willies.

Kelly May 11, 2010 at 10:15 pm

Random fact:
1) This is the first comment I have made on your blog, but I read it regularly.
2) I will be having yummy Bluphies with you at the Madison blogger meet-up :)

Jenna May 11, 2010 at 10:21 pm

Wish I could go to the blogger meet up!

claire May 11, 2010 at 11:20 pm

I wish I could humor you..but, I ended the night as a horrible girlfriend with a boyfriend who thinks “I don’t care” when really I fear I care too much. It is deep and upsetting and wish I could sleep. Your post may be random but it helps to read others thoughts. I too think almond butter and jelly would fill me up more than a salad but some greens are better than no greens!

Kendall May 11, 2010 at 11:31 pm

I got a hole in one at work.

But seriously. We played putt-putt for the company anniverary today and my teammates were pretty surprised of my golf short game.

How’s that for random?

Laura May 12, 2010 at 12:42 am

Random Fact #1
Today my little hometown of Hobart, Tasmania got its first sprinkling of snow for the winter.
Random Fact #2
Because of said snow, I rugged up in my John Deere Tractors Hoodie, I think my colleagues might now think I am a bit weird and possibly a Redneck, but I don’t care, its cute :)
Random Fact #3
I am having a chicken stir fry for tea so I can use up an ancient tin of bean sprouts that has been kicking around in my pantry for way too long.

Ilana May 12, 2010 at 1:04 am

First off, my lactose intolerance is drooling over that cheese. Cheddar and parm are my two favorite things. Ohh, food allergy, why?

Oh man I had the randomest day ever! I decided to go to yoga in a local park, it was freaking freezing cold out so the friend who was supposed to go with me flaked, but I went for it anyway. Afterwards, I wanted to sit to eat my lunch in the park but was rudely interrupted by some guy who felt like hitting on me (who I had watched creepily staring at me throughout yoga. Hate. That.) so I texted my best friend and made her call me with a fake “emergency” so I could get away. AS i was making my escape I ended up bumping into an old friend from high school who I haven’t seen in more than two years. The rest of my day, equally random.

And LOST! :):):) I can’t. I’m sad it’s ending but I’m so excited to find out everything.

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) May 12, 2010 at 2:05 am

Hi Holly! I had coffee with Madeline today and we talked about you. And I said I wished we could make it a trifecta and I could be there when you meet up. Gosh, how fun!
Til then, have a wonderful hump day, hottie :)

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is May 12, 2010 at 5:37 am

Every day of mine is random!

Lauren May 12, 2010 at 5:57 am

I have been loving Overnight Oats too! My favorite has been the ones you made a few weeks ago…strawberry banana split oats. OMG, I almost died! :)

Uncle Tommie Timbertoes May 12, 2010 at 6:14 am

1. A ducks got a bill but he can’t spend it.

2. Fish don’t perspire.

3. Can’t bounce a meatball.

4. If they call an orange orange why don’t they call a lemon yellow?

5. What’s the difference between saying “thank you” and “thank you so much”? If “thank you so much” is better than just “thank you” shouldn’t we just say that all the time? I’m confused on that & a few other things.

Katie @ Health for the Whole Self May 12, 2010 at 6:24 am

A few days ago a man I had met one time for about 5 minutes called me out of the blue and asked me if I wanted to interview for a job opening in his organization. Totally random, but awesome!

Nothing cheers me up or boosts my creativity quite like a little Liz Gilbert. Or a good dose of Kelly Corrigan or Lisa Kogan. :)

Maya May 12, 2010 at 6:39 am

Random: cashew butter is delicious. Try it!

Katrina May 12, 2010 at 6:52 am

Random facts…
1. I got a new couch and loveseat yesterday.
2. It was the first time that I ever bought a new couch and loveseat
3. Last night, my fiance tested out the couch and I tested out the loveseat. What a nap I had :)!

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) May 12, 2010 at 7:56 am

I had such a random day yesterday too.

Like doing yoga at 9:30 at night.

And having savory oats for dinner.

And ordering decaf coffee (which I never, ever do.)

Totally random. But in a good kind of way. :D

The Rabbit Runner May 12, 2010 at 8:04 am

Dear Holly,
you always have the best looking oats. Seriously, I look forward to seeing your creations every day :)
Rabbit Runner :)

Evan Thomas May 12, 2010 at 8:45 am

Random: They just set a new record for the worlds largest batch of hummus in Lebanon

brandi May 12, 2010 at 8:55 am

I’ll match your 10 :)

1. I want one of those bags! I have a strange obsession with purses with rope handles. So cute and makes me want to wear stripes and go sailing.

2. LOST…makes me feel lost. What is the brother’s name?!? he who shall not be named? Voldemort? I’m going with Esau, purely for Biblical reference. Plus, he was hairier than jacob, and that’s part of the history.

3. Why can’t I live in Madison? We need a meet up.

4. I ate dinner in my pajamas last night, which is one of my very favorite things to do. Good thing my husband loves me as-is.

5. I ordered 5 books a few weeks ago and still haven’t started any of them.

6. I had a biscuit for breakfast and already want another one.

7. Nick and I are STAYING POSITIVE for May even though we can’t find jobs.

8. Maggie likes to eat random stuff in the house. She tears up any dog bed we get her, eats her toys, and also loves ice cubes.

9. I’d love to just stay home and bake all day.

10. I’m visiting my mom and sister in 2 weekends and am so excited!!!!

Happy Humpday girl :)

Kacy May 12, 2010 at 9:18 am

I sang Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” to my iced coffee yesterday. No lie.

Nothing wrong with randomness!

Maura May 12, 2010 at 9:36 am

I realized yesterday that I like this guy….BUT I’ve already “pseudo-dated” his cousin already

…Whoops & a tad bit of fml all mixed in…. 0:)

Madeline - Greens and Jeans May 12, 2010 at 10:40 am

I sang The Boy is Mine in its entirety while making my oatmeal this morning

samantha May 12, 2010 at 10:51 am

a) i didn’t go to work today because i didn’t feel like it.

b) i have an insatiable urge to clean my kitchen, but not my room.

c) i need help?

Annie May 12, 2010 at 10:54 am

Random: I read Typhoid Mary by Bourdain over the past two days. For some reason, I thought Typhoid Mary referred to a ship. It does not. Whoops.

Lauren @ Health on the Run May 12, 2010 at 11:36 am

First of all, I’m not sure that only 2 episodes left of Lost is a POSITIVE thing. I’m already getting anxious thinking about my future withdraw.

Secondly, I’ll give you a random fact for my day today. It’s 12:30 and I’m still in my pajamas. Am I particularly proud of this fact? No. But sometimes you just need one of those days…

Lisa (I'm an Okie) May 12, 2010 at 11:41 am

1. I wish I could dig the whole oats thing, but ick. I’m much more of an egg and toast kind of breakfast girl.
2. Salads and cereal are two things that NEVER fill me up.

wendy @ ABCs and Garden Peas May 12, 2010 at 11:51 am

Overnight Oats are my boyfriend. Don’t tell my husband.

Not too long ago I got lost on the way to work. That’s pretty random!

By the way, I turned an N into a P yesterday and blogged about it! Thanks for the inspiration!

Heather May 12, 2010 at 12:20 pm

Hooray for our Bluephies meet up! So excited :)

also- um…that cheese sounds AMAZING! as in, i plan on hunting it down when i get to Madtown.

since i am reading this Wednesday, you are now lucky enough to be read TWO random things. One from Tuesday, when you asked for a random thing and one from today, as when i am commenting. I know you are UBER excited about this. I can just tell. all the way from upstate NY ;)

Tuesday – random super encouraging fellow runner, whom ive seen on the trail before, cheered me on as I passed by her in both directions (we were clearly both starting at opposite ends and then turning around to come back) – “keep going! you’re doing great!” It wasnt a race, she doesnt know me, I wasnt wearing an “i need encouragement, please help” sandwich board – she was just KIND and ENCOURAGING and AWESOME. (i am now going to encourage other runners on the trail. if everyone she cheers on, cheers on other runners as they go, wont the trail be a lovely place to be?)

Today – today i learned that i’ve been saying “occasionally” incorrectly for- um- EVER. i said OH-cassionally, and my coworker was all “you mean AH-cassionally?” then i tried to prove him wrong with the pronunciation found at dictionary.com. Yeah. that didnt happen. I was clearly wrong. oops.

April May 12, 2010 at 1:11 pm

I have not had overnight oats in forever.. thanks for the reminder!!

Dorothy May 12, 2010 at 1:39 pm

I had commented previously about my mom giving me permission to marry my boyfriend, and I wanted to update you with the news that we’re now officially engaged! (As of April 17th). We’re even looking into having the wedding in Door County, WI!

Rachael May 12, 2010 at 2:09 pm

Judging by most people’s inner thought processes, randomness is probably the natural way of things…I vaguely recall some lesson in middle school science about all things in the universe migrating towards entropy – different concepts, for sure, but I’m convinced they’re related. Rock on, random people :)
My own random action today – I fed strawberries to my chickens, and I’m terrified they’re going to have diarrhea. Last year’s blackberry experiment didn’t go so well in terms of animal husbandry, and I’m currently looking online at modifying the BRAT diet for the hens….just in case.

Kristie May 12, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Sometimes random days and randomness is the best way to be. Or you know, just all the time.
Sadly there just wasn’t enough random in my day for my liking. I need to get out more. I made zucchini muffins for the first time in a million years. That was kind of random. I also put crazy scream metal music on my ipod just for the hell of it. That was very random (and will be quite the startle when it comes on shuffle during my runs I have no doubt).
And I’m gonna have to try your overnight oat proportions. It’s been too long since I’ve made overnighters and those bowls of yours look deathly amazing. Death by oats? I think it could happen.

Katie May 12, 2010 at 5:16 pm

I had a little boy come into class this today and announce that he had a water bottle full of beer. He (obviously) did not, but it was really random, and I had to slap my hand over my mouth to prevent laughter, and then discipline him accordingly.

runnerforever May 12, 2010 at 5:32 pm

I am doing a night run, that is random!
That bag is adorable!!!

BroccoliHut May 12, 2010 at 5:33 pm

Random thing: in packing my stuff today, I discovered that I have FOUR bathing suits here at school. How did that happen? Did I plan on beach-combing on campus?

Kate May 12, 2010 at 8:16 pm

eat, pray, love = the best book ever!

i think i am making overnight oats for breakfast now. i have been on a huge smoothie kick but yours always look so good. perhaps it is time for a change.

Susan May 13, 2010 at 8:57 am

Okay, okay. May 11 was Tuesday. One random thing from Tuesday is that I totally flirted with a guy at the gym. So sue me! :P

Lost gives me headaches. I feel like I need Cliff notes to get me through it.
