The 20-Mile Run

So, after The Cumin Situation of yore, yours truly made it safe and sound back to Minnesota without any further mishaps. When I arrived in the land of 10,000 lakes, I promptly hit the hay in preparation for The 20-Mile Run.

Before I start, I need to thank you ALL for ALL your well wishes and positive thoughts on the run – you seriously helped pull me through!

To fill you in on my marathon training, this was/is the longest run before the big marathon day (which is exactly 3 weeks from today! Eeek!). In preparation, I Map My Runned the route for the first 12 miles, then my girl Angharad mapped out the last 8 miles for us to run together. She is the best, seriously.

Soooo…how did it go you ask? Well, a little something like this…

I felt awesome and in the zone almost the whole time.  Even some hills near the end couldn’t get me down (mostly because Angharad picked me up.  I would not have made it through without her :)).

However, it was 1:30pm when we got back to her house. Something didn’t quite make sense…I left at 9:10am which would have calculated out to 4 hours and 20 minutes for the 20 miles, for about 12:00/mile.  Now, I’ve been training at a 10:00/mile pace and usually don’t go much above this.  I know Angharad and I walked a mile or so back to her house, which shaves off 20 minutes, but it still didn’t make sense…

But the wedding was at 2:30pm, so I really didn’t have time to think about it.  I raced back to my friend’s, showered and showed up 5 minutes late to the wedding looking like a drowned rat.

Conclusion of the story shall commence after the wedding photos below…

I am a sucker for a good first dance photo :).

The picture above was clearly the best picture I took all night. You will also have to excuse my tomato face, which is what you get when the sunscreen melts off your face from sweating buckets during your run.

The wedding was fun – Megan and I a.k.a. “The Two Grandmas” left the wedding at about 9:45pm.  I had the run, she had been up since 3am.  We left before all of our friend’s parents (awesome), and you know what?  We liked it that way.

Back at Meggy Moo’s casa, I had to go back on Map My Run and check this route out again.  Something was not right.

Final Route Mileage: 22.24 miles
Final Pace Time:
About 10:00/mile

Moral of this story? Listen to your gut!  I ran more than 22 miles, and you know what?  I am 10X LESS scared for the marathon! However, I wish I had known this because then I most definitely would have had a second slice of cake, haha!

This morning, Megan, Ashley and I grabbed brekkie then took a nice 5K (3.2 miles) walk around the lake…

Medium nonfat latte + Spinach Cheddar Omelet on a whole wheat bagel

Then, I visited my Grandpa and hit the road back to WI…

Car snackage – Newman’s Spelt Pretzels, KIND Walnut Date Bar, Naner + Braeburn Apple

A trip to the co-op was most def in order because my kitchen was barren.  These were my two best finds of the day…

One of these were morphed into this…

bed of organic spinach
1 chopped carrot
2 chopped Roma tomatoes
1/4 cup diced onion
1 crumbled Barbecue Sunshine patty
drizzle of Trader Joe’s BBQ sauce (spicayyyy!)
FSTG Potato Chive Chips

Sunshine BBQ Patties?  Goooood.  FSTG Potato Chive Chips?  Goooood.  This mess of a salad?  Goooood. Dessert?  Goooood.

Stonyfield Oikos Plain Greek yog
1/4 cup Dylan’s Sunflower Almond Chia granola
1 packet Justin’s Maple Almond Butter
drizzle of maple syrup

Excuse my language, but this was the shit.  The good kind of shit.  Okay, so that didn’t come out right…

Justin’s Maple Nut Butter?  Goooood.  Dylan’s Chia Granola?  Goooood.  Yog mess overall?  The shit.

Alright kiddos, that about wraps it up from Everythingtarianville.  This gal needs to go on a cleaning spree of the flat and then catch-up on her life (and with all you who have blogs!).  However, to help me along, I DEMAND (yes, demand!) you all answer me this really deep question:

If you had to choose one color to wear the rest of your life (and ONLY that color), what color would it be? Call me depressing, call me boring or call me classic – but I choose to wear black!

Alison September 13, 2009 at 7:39 pm

OMG I’m first! (Back to write a real comment after I hit submit)

Alison September 13, 2009 at 7:42 pm

I cannot BELIEVE you ran 22 miles! I would definitely be less scared – considering if you are going to hit the wall it usually happens at mile 20! Kind of funny actually, especially the part about another piece of cake!

I am equally and both oppositely boring and I would choose to wear white. I am fair skinned (read: Albino) and white against my skin makes me look tan. At least that’s what I tell myself!

I’m already tearing up for your marathon. Someone get the kleenex – here come the tears!

Matt September 13, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Damn 22 miles!? That is AWESOME!

Matt September 13, 2009 at 7:46 pm

I think I would pick black too!

Or red for the Crimson Tide :)

Lizzy September 13, 2009 at 7:51 pm

22 miles. dang girl! so proud of you! :)

if i had to pick shoot i think i would pick black or blue! hahahah…i just noticed it sounded like i want to wear a black eye! ha!!!!!

night girl!

Katharina September 13, 2009 at 7:54 pm

I would wear… a light grey or perhaps a cream. I think those colors are so elegant :D

DANCE it up girl! and seriously, you are awesome and a total inspiration. You do all these amazing things and challenge yourself to new levels, but you also listen to yourself and respect your body. That’s something truly admirable. I know a lot of athletes that function like robots and never give themselves some R&R when they need it. It’s about respecting yourself now, so you can continue to do what you love when you get old and grey. Kudos to you chica!

p.s. those Sunshine burgers look like they’re the bomb!

Evan Thomas September 13, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Wow, 22 miles, the cumin totally works! Haha, way to go. I would have definitely left the wedding early, too. No matter how much fun I’m having, I’m just not a night person. Oh, and hells yeah with the maple almond butter. I just put some on toast 5 minutes ago

Jenny September 13, 2009 at 8:05 pm

wow- that’s incredible that you ran over 22 miles and didn’t even know it!! Congrats, and I know that you are going to ROCK that marathon…you’re my hero :)

Love me a good wedding reception, but I love me an early bedtime even more (sometimes)

OMG I’m so bad with this type of thing, it’s stressful…black is a good choice, but my favorite color is sage green, so maybe that? It would work for all the seasons…christmas, spring…right?

Sophia September 13, 2009 at 8:18 pm

I’ll wear white! I like to look “pure”….Hee hee!
And girl, I love you, but you’re CRAZY! Great job on the 20 miles though! woo-hoo!

Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats September 13, 2009 at 8:19 pm

wow wow WOW! 22 miles – you, my friend, are the woman!!! And still walking a 5k the next day?? You have legs of steal that I am jealous of :)

Color = black. Hands down.

Katie September 13, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Love the tomato face – I do that kind of thing all the time, then when I look back I am horrified that I thought I looked cute.

Also – way to GO! Just think, 4 more miles, and you are done with the marathon. What is 4 more measly miles when you just ran 22?! (For the record, 22 is my favorite number…)

April September 13, 2009 at 8:31 pm

22 miles?? Your insane!! haha.

I’ve never heard of Dylan’s granola.. what does the package look like?

And I’d definitely wear black! I don’t know what it is about it but I just love it!

Rosey Rebecca September 13, 2009 at 8:44 pm

22 miles is amazingggg! I have those Newman’s Own pretzels waiting for me to try! Can’t wait. Your salad looks awesome! I would probably wear blue.

Leianna September 13, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Green for sure!
Great job on the 20/22.4 miler! You’ll do great in the marathon. Love Dunn Bros. coffee!
Have a great and productive night!

Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries September 13, 2009 at 9:10 pm

With you on the black!

And i LOVE your dancing face haha

Tay September 13, 2009 at 9:20 pm

Oh girl – CONGRATS on the freakin long run!!! Amazing and now you are ready to rock & roll! Question for ya – I recently bought the falafel sunshine patties, but they were ehhh. I have 1 more coupon – which one do you recommend? I see you bought the breakfast & BBQ ones, are those your fave? I don’t want to waste my last coupon! Thanks girl!

Whit September 13, 2009 at 9:20 pm

22 miles! WAHOO! Way to rock that run girl. I am so, so inspired by you. Thanks for that. I need it, believe me.

janetha September 13, 2009 at 10:01 pm

ahh! that photo of you with the squishface made me so happy. kickass on the 22.. my fave number what what! you are a machine, i am so proud of you. dylan and justin know whats up! have a great monday my sweeeet. thanks for all the kind words as of late, i love you so damn much!

Kailey (SnackFace) September 13, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Ahhh!!! YOU DA BOSS! Holy shit, homes! 22 miles? You are absolutely incredible! Congratulations!

Also, I love that pic of you dancing. And I LOVE the dinna salad and yogurt mess. They both look out of this world.

This question is a goodie. I’m going to go with white or cream. It does wonderful things for my complexion. But then there’s the whole stain issue…and I can be clumsy…

Have a fabulous start to the week!

Andrea@WellnessNotes September 13, 2009 at 10:19 pm

You are awesome!!! Love the wedding pics, especially the dancing one… ;)

One color for the rest of my life: well, my initial response was pink. I love pink. But then I re-read your question, and it looks like I have to wear everything in this color (underwear, socks, pants, shirts, shoes, coats…). Pink may not be the best choice after all. (Plus hubby made a vague remark the other day that I was getting too old for so much pink???). Anyway, my next choice would be black, but everything black really is depressing… Unless I get to wear lots of outrageous and colorful jewelry!

Mia {runs and rests} September 13, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Way to go grandma! :D 22+ miles – you are awesome! It’s not too late to get another slice of cake. ;) I want to go and run 22 right now!

I’m going with black, too. Classic!
Oh, that shit looks good! ;) And oh, love that picture of you at the wedding!

BroccoliHut September 13, 2009 at 10:29 pm

Considering my recent obsession with all things BBW, that Sunshine burger is calling my name!
If I could choose one color to wear, it would be coral. Not too specific am I?

Brooke September 13, 2009 at 11:29 pm

OMG YOU ARE SUCH A BOSS!!! You will rock da shit outa that marathon… it’s gonna be even BETTA than that shit of a dessert you made! Sounds weird but I totally know you know what I’m sayin’.

I WANT THAT SALAD!!!!!!!!!! It looks!!
Sunshine burgers have such a good rep. I need to rep them. After all, my name IS homegirl.

I would totally wear black too. I am a capricorn and that is the main color of our wardrobe (ie: Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Homegirl).

Lynn @ The Actors Diet September 13, 2009 at 11:57 pm

i love sunshine burgers!!! i’ve only had them once, on salad, but i already have a special place in my heart for them.

i would wear navy blue. heart heart heart navy blue.

Whole Body Love September 14, 2009 at 12:39 am

I love black because it always looks put-together to me. For some reason I see it as classy and elegant.

Kate September 14, 2009 at 2:09 am

LEGEND! That is a great pace for a 22-miler!!

insideiamdancing September 14, 2009 at 6:49 am

I am floored that you ran 22 miles then had the energy to party! Glad it went well- so exciting that the marathon is only 3 weeks away! That’s the same weekend I land in NY so if you feel like celebrating and running just a wee bit further (k, a lot further- am talking New York!) come over :D

Janetha just sent me some Justin’s butter- looks awesome!

Pam (Highway to Health) September 14, 2009 at 7:21 am

22.24 miles!?! That’s amazing! Congrats! You definitely deserve a second piece of cake!

K September 14, 2009 at 7:58 am

Wow – that’s a blessing in disguise that you unknowingly ran 22 miles! Way to go!! Sounds like a confidence booster :)

HAH love the dancing picture! Glad you had a great time!

That bagel sandwich?! Loves. I’d pick brown probably just because I feel I look better in earthy tones.

Low September 14, 2009 at 8:23 am

You are seriously my hero! What an awesome run! I can’t wait to follow you through the rest of your (first) marathon journey. You’re just so damn inspiring!!

The wedding looks fun. How many wedding have you attended this summer?! Haha.

That’s a tough question! It would either be red (team colors) or brown. I have olive skin and it looks pretty in brown and neutral colors.

Have a good Monday!

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) September 14, 2009 at 8:25 am

You are amazing. 22+ miles?? Not to mention the fact that you felt great at 10 min/mile pace. That’s exciting. :D

Okay, love your questions as always. :D I’d have to say I would always wear black too! It goes with everything and I could dress it up with colored scarves or necklaces or what have you. Very versatile. :D

Faith September 14, 2009 at 9:07 am

Wow, excellent job on your 22+ mile run!

I would wear black too! After all, it goes with everything and it’s slimming (a girl has to have a few tricks up her sleeve, right?). ;)

brandi September 14, 2009 at 10:49 am

congrats on the run!!! that is awesome that you did so good and feel good about the upcoming race!

i would like your salad + yogurt mess, please :) I cannot find those sunshine burgers anywhere here!

Enjoy your Monday!!

Sarah (Finding My Balance) September 14, 2009 at 10:59 am

Oh, my gawd, what an incredible run! Way to go, girl!!!
It looks like a good weekend, overall. Your burger creation looks amaze, and I feel so sorry that the Russkies haven’t caught on to the whole veggie burger thing….

Sarah (Finding My Balance) September 14, 2009 at 11:04 am

Oh, yeah! I think I would pick black, too. Or maybe grey. I wear a ton of both these colors already, so it could work out fine…

(Although recently my “purple trousers” (hee hee Brits are so cute) have gotten a lot of positive attention. Maybe purple is my thing???)

Angharad (Eating for England) September 14, 2009 at 11:17 am

I love you!! You effing rocked out at that run! I constantly was just amazed that you were still going and still holding full conversations with me 20 miles in!! You just rocked it, plain and simple and you are an inspiration. I am so happy that I could help make it okay for you! Those hills were killah! But we made it!
Oooops-a-diddles on running 2.24 miles more than planned…some of that was my fault for sure but like you said (ok implied), now you KNOW you can kick that marathon’s butt!

Alright enough arse-kissing. That salad looks re-donk. As does the bowl of yogurt love AND that bagel….and m’lady of course the cookies were baked post-Holly. You think I’d have kept those from you?! Love you x 34,98702.

Christina September 14, 2009 at 11:42 am

i chose black too! and awesome job with the run!!! even more awesome that you actually ran 22 point something rather than 20! AWESOME!!!! you must have been quite nervous when you thought u were running 12 minute splits haha

Emily (Healthy Fit Mama) September 14, 2009 at 12:28 pm

22 miles?! You are gonna rock that marathon! You go girl!

Karena September 14, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Holy crap! I’ve been reading too many of your posts just in Google Reader. LOVE the new layout (though, it might not be that new? shame on me)!

Such a pretty wedding venue :) You totally rocked those 22 miles!! Awesome!! I’m with you on the black…and it’s classic ;)

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) September 14, 2009 at 1:46 pm

Hot dang girl. 22 miles! And then you went to a wedding afterwards! You are a machine. Love those sunshine burgers – I need to find them again.

p.s. just nominated you for some FoodBuzz blog awards :-)

Cindy September 14, 2009 at 1:57 pm

after a run like that ( yeah, who’m I kidding)
I would have skipped cake and had 2 entrees!

and a nap

favorite color…I have to pick one? that doesn’t account for moods, season, moods, some days are sunny bright orange, and white…. is always crisp and clean (for a while) and black of course rocks…

this stinks.

so there

healthy ashley September 14, 2009 at 2:08 pm
