The Good Life

by Holly on March 28, 2010

in breakfast,dinner,lunch,seriousness

As my lovely friends Kailey (yes, as in Ms. Snackface) + Kanye (yes, as in Mr. West) would put it, I’ve spent the past couple days enjoying the good life.  In the words of the latter: “Let’s go on a living spree, because they say the best things in life are free…”

Well said Kanye, well said.

The good life. A novel concept, huh?  In theory, we should all be living the good life everyday of our life – laughing, enjoying, tasting, doing, seeing, experiencing, talking, thinking, dancing, singing (okay, maybe those last two are just me).

But what exactly does “the good life” mean?

In case you’re unsure of where this is all going, I’m asking you a totally rhetorical question of which I will attempt to answer for you in an intelligent, philosophical and humorous way in this post.  However, I make no guarantees so don’t go asking for your money time spent reading this back.

T.H.E.’s 10 Essential Components of “The Good Life”

  • FRIENDS: One of the major cornerstones of my life, I am a true believer, “A good friend is cheaper than therapy.” Seriously. They are there for ya when you need it, make you laugh when you’re feeling blue and of course, you do the same for them in return. The crazy part? We grow up, and now my college roommate Amy is going to be a MOM!  That means on Saturday, I attended my very first friend baby shower…scary, I know.

  • SHOPPING: Do I even need to explain this one?  I mean, nothing quite compares to the joy of finding the perfect purple ballet flat for Spring or the exact navy blue + white nautical cardigan to match my new, slightly-distressed jean shorts.  Even better…how’s about scoring a pink shirt for $5 in a “Buy One, Get One 1/2 Off” deal?  Or perhaps, a new serving platter to be used as a bedroom accessory? Ahhhh…pure bliss.

  • FRESH PINEAPPLE: Random?  Perhaps. But I am pretty convinced if we could all start out our day with fresh pineapple, the world would be a much better, scurvy-less place.

  • BRUNCH: Completely and utterly underrated.  If I could eat a big brunch everyday for the rest of my everythingtarian life surrounded by my family + friends (and perhaps, some bloggers + readers as well?), I would be the happiest of campers.  And I worked at a day camp for two summers, so I know what a happy camper looks like, FYI.

  • GROCERY SHOPPING: I have a confession to make: grocery shopping is my favorite part of the week. I LOVE meandering up and down the aisles thinking up new foodie concoctions, humming and hawing over what I want to purchase and then finally getting it all home and put away neatly.  Yes, I walk up and down EVERY aisle. Yes, I am a nerd. And yes, I clearly have a food blog for a reason.

(from left to right)

  • strawberries ($1.49 each!!!)
  • organic, free-range eggs
  • spaghetti sauce
  • organic skim milk
  • 32 oz. tub of Plain Chobani Greek Yogurt
  • carrots
  • onion
  • baby spinach
  • orange pepper
  • bananas
  • ACCOMPLISHMENT: Life would be nothing if we didn’t strive for something.  That statement may be pretty vague, but it’s true.  We could sit around like big blobs all day or we can go out and just do it, Nike-style.  Blob time is necessary once in awhile, but it’s accomplishing things that really makes me happy.  Even if it just my mondo to-do list, checking things off before devouring the last of the Bulgur, Spinach and Toasted Walnut Pancakes is something to be proud of.

  • YOG MESSES: I mean, how can food NOT make the list?  Impossible, especially a good, well-balanced yog mess.  When you get a combination like this one – 3/4 cup Chobani Greek Yog + 3/4 cup strawberries + small handful Raspberry Galaxy Granola + drizzle of sunflower seed butter, consider perfection attained.

  • WEEKEND PHONE CONVERSATIONS: As you may have noticed, I pack a lot into my life.  And maybe a part of that stems from the fact I want to live a full, whole and happy life.  However, that also means weeks can fly by, and I haven’t talked to any of the people who matter to me most – my family + friends.  This is why weekend phone conversations rule. I have the time and energy to chat away, fully catch-up on all their lives and get some much needed love from the people I <3 most.

  • THE RETURN OF GLEE: Nuff’ said. Check out the new promo – I may have peed myself with joy.
  • SUNDAY NIGHTS: There is no better time to crawl in bed early, snuggle under the covers, think about all the fun you had over the weekend, read a book (or blogs) or listen to music and get ready to start a brand new week.  Especially one where the temps are supposed to hit 70 degrees.

What are your key components for living the good life? Sharing is caring!

Keys to my good life: RUNNING, food, friends, family, Lost. Haha.

Maggie @ Fit.Fun.Food March 28, 2010 at 9:50 pm

I completely agree with you! Especially on weekend conversations! There’s nothing like an hour on the phone with my best friends, my dad or my sister! I’d add oatmeal, dancing, running and singing like there’s no tomorrow!

Jenna March 28, 2010 at 10:03 pm

Love your list!!

Mama Pea March 28, 2010 at 10:26 pm

Good list…I’d add music, hugs and dress up clothes to mine. Hope your week starts out right!!!

Molly March 28, 2010 at 10:44 pm

I almost peed myself with this fabulous post to entertain me during the work day :D And thanks to YOU, I became a Gleek myself and couldn’t be more excited myself! I <3 grocery shopping too and every aisle is a MUST. I would add river runs in 70 degree weather to my list. Have a great week Holly!!!

Jamie @ Tearaveler March 28, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Can I just express how upset I am that you found an awesome pair of purple ballet flats?! I have been searching high and low for a good pair =(. Clearly you are master of the art of shopping!

I’m going to have to add sunshine to the list… not every day sunshine, but the ‘shows up after a long winter and you know it’s finally warming up and you can wear flip flops again’ sunshine. Also, hammocks and campfires. Even better: laying in a hammock NEXT to a campfire, that is lake side =).. ultimate ‘summer’ good life right there =)

Crunchy Granola Gal March 28, 2010 at 11:04 pm

i love this. i’d add cooking a fab meal to the list, following a super satisfying run/ workout of choice. or cooking a fab meal without the workout. both are wonderful. uhm what else… human contact in all the senses of the word “contact.” uhhh yeah. you get me, right? :)

oh and i paid 2.99 for my strawberries today at the wholiness (whole foods). totally cheated! arrrrrr.

Madeline - Greens and Jeans March 28, 2010 at 11:09 pm

Last summer I decided my whole wardrobe should be nautical themed. In other words, I love your sweater! I’d definitely add lazy mornings, long runs, car singalongs, and trashy tv to your list

Brent Sherwin March 28, 2010 at 11:47 pm

Great list… Would add Hot tubbing in the snow…. Drinking wine under the stars… and hanging with the sherwin family…. have a great week.

Erica March 29, 2010 at 12:16 am

Cute post. Love the pic of you and your friends. Your awesome shopping finds make me want to shop! Maybe I’ll hit up a few stores tomorrow ;). mmm to the pineapple and Sunday brunch out is my favorite meal!! What makes my “good life”- Frank & Josh, wonderful family and friends, teaching classes, fresh fruit & vegetables, a good bundle of nut butters and hummus, comfortable clothes, coffee!!

Andrea@WellnessNotes March 29, 2010 at 12:16 am

Love your good life list! I could borrow your list pretty much as is… ;) But I could also add to it: stealing kisses and hugs from the toddler (he is not a kisser and hugger), sunshine (not too hot, not too cold), a good glass of wine, and, a hike with a view.

Have a great week, Holly!

Lynn @ The Actors Diet March 29, 2010 at 12:17 am

i love grocery shopping too. in fact, i like it a lot more than clothes shopping!

Anna @oatsnboats March 29, 2010 at 1:40 am

Running around with my dogs – that’s definitely at the top of my list. Ohh, also making a meal out of my garden (or with a combo of garden and farmers market). Getting to see the water – river, pond, ocean. Taking time to breathe and notice life around you.

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is March 29, 2010 at 5:36 am

Grocery shopping is also one of the highlights of my weekend. I am easily amused. :)

Uncle Tommie Timbertoes March 29, 2010 at 6:01 am

OMG, 60 Minutes did a segment on Jihad Jane. She was wearing the exact same scarf as you have on in that pic with yer friends. I even told Gayle “How cute is that scarf”, she said “Super cute”, then I see you with it on, isn’t that unusual?

Lauren March 29, 2010 at 6:07 am

Life sounds amazing for you right now. So glad you are just soaking it all up and enjoying every moment for what it is worth.

Oh, and grocery shopping is most definitely the highlight of my week as well!!!! :)

Hope you are doing amazing love.

<3 you always!!!!!

Chelsea @ (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) March 29, 2010 at 6:31 am

Your blog never fails to help me feel lighter. I catch up with folks via the phone on the weekends as well, it’s one of the things I look forward to most about Saturday/Sunday. My life has changed for the better since I discovered both yogurt messes and sunflower butter.

I did all my grocery shopping online this week, but it was still a blast “clicking” on all the digital categories and hmmming and hawwwing at the crazy organic food selection. Haha, food nerds unite!

Glad you had a tremendous weekend, lady! Hope your week is even more stellar!

Whitney @ Lettuce Love March 29, 2010 at 7:01 am

I love this list! Friends, brunch, pets and grocery shopping totally top my list. I think my dream job is to be a professional grocery shopper! I could spend my life in a food store :)

Julie @SavvyEats March 29, 2010 at 7:13 am

I *heart* grocery shopping.

Madison blogger brunch soon?? Or a blogger meet up in general!!

Jessie March 29, 2010 at 7:50 am

Grocery shopping is my fave time of the week too, especially when my husband comes along!

Lauren @ Eater not a runner March 29, 2010 at 8:49 am

Totally agree on the grocery shopping….love it!

The Fit Collegiate March 29, 2010 at 9:01 am

Oh, I love this post! For me, the good life is: family, going out for dinner, Christmas, oatmeal, grocery shopping (haha), reading, and clothes!

Kacy March 29, 2010 at 9:25 am

Ahhh, love your list! I love grocery shopping as well. And regular shopping, although I need to cut back on that for awhile!

I would add taking risks, watching The Ellen Show and dancing with her, and chocolate to my list. But yours pretty much covers it!

Angharad (Eating for England) March 29, 2010 at 9:36 am

Hey lovely girl! I miss thee too (saw your g-chat about 1.5 hours after I’d walked away from my computer last night)!

Good things in life are:
> friends also, duh
> travel. to anywhere. the UP, the west coast, home to england or far away to somewhere exotic – it keeps my blood pumping and heart happy
> food. don’t really need to explain that one here, do i?
> long bike rides and picnics

Have an AWESOME week! xx

Evan Thomas March 29, 2010 at 10:01 am

This post is such a mood booster! So is baking; that’s my key to the good life. I haven’t until today for 4 weeks =-O

Jenna March 29, 2010 at 10:42 am

Grocery shopping is high on my list as well. Hanging out w/ my puppster is also high on the list. :)

samantha March 29, 2010 at 10:51 am

i walk up and down every aisle too! it calms me down, and i always take my time…. except for the fact that the dc whole foods is always SO PACKED!

one of my favorite things in the world is a sunday morning spent with the new york times and a cup of tea. added points if it’s sunny outside, mmm.

Tamara March 29, 2010 at 11:21 am

For me, shopping is both a high and a downer; I spent $50 this morning on an awesome knit dress and blazer, which makes me feel giddy, but now I’m weathering the effects of sticker shock!

Therese March 29, 2010 at 11:22 am

I totally agree on just living it up! I managed to do the things I enjoy this weekend (plus a few things I needed to get done) and not feel guilty at all.

I am obsessed with that demin short/grey top combo! So cute and springy :)

Susan March 29, 2010 at 12:44 pm

Yay! Another wonderful post from you – I especially love the Kailey/Kanye line you started with. ALL my friends are having babies!! It’s crazy. I never thought I’d get baby fever, but now that I’m surrounded by all the happy moms and cute infants, it’s hard!!

Damn, food in the U.S. is cheap. That haul would so not cost me under $30 here. The strawberries alone would be $10 :\ My Sunday grocery store trips are my fave part of the week too!!! I spend almost two hours wandering up and down every aisle picking things up and reading labels. I even hum along if a good song comes on the satellite radio they play. Good times for sure :)

One of my key components is BELLY LAUGHS. A good ole’ guffaw straight from the gut makes for an awesome day :D

adrienmelaine March 29, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Tribes is by Seth Godin- And I too went on a living spree this weekend- love wandering home when the birds are chirping and the sun is rising. haha

Michelle March 29, 2010 at 1:10 pm

YUP, grocery shopping is also the highlight of my week, especially if i go to a NEW grocery store that has lots of my favorite goodies Cheap. Sales also help. hehehe

This weekend, my highlight was getting 50% off a mani/pedi with my best friend – AND getting my nails painted in blue (OPI Hong Kong in Suzy says Feng Shui! Woot woot) and… buying a pair of red Nike running shorts. Is that dorky?

Kailey (SnackFace) March 29, 2010 at 2:18 pm

There are some things I’d add to this list that aren’t PG. Or PG-13, for that matter. BUT dancing on elevated surfaces is a must. And loads of Weezy, Young Money and Kanye.

Speaking of grocery shopping, I’m off to do that!

Also, what is in that last bowl? It looks lovely.

We need a MAYJ catch-up. Love you!

Susan March 29, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Amen! I’m not sure if you know my feelings on brunch, but it’s by far my favorite meal of all time as well as my favorite food to dine out for. I mean, when else can you get eggs, pastries, salad, dessert, a sandwich, cereal, etc etc at one meal?

This is gonna be obvy and quite cheezalicious, but my mama is an integral part of my “good life”. I don’t know what I’d do without her. Nuff said there.

Have a good Monday girlie!

Maura March 29, 2010 at 2:36 pm

Wine, dark chocolate, & romantic comedies to that list. yes, romantic comedies..i’m a sucker for all things that involve matthew mcconaughey…

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) March 29, 2010 at 3:05 pm

Oh girl, I love this list! :D And you are not alone in singing and dancing as part of living the good life. I can often be found breaking into impromput dancing and singing too. Sometimes it just feels *right*, ya know? :D

Part of living the good life for me is a slow-moving-morning. I realized this while vacationing last year, sitting out on a sunny deck with my shades and a fun magazine. Why did it have to only happen on vacation? Why couldn’t I plan more slow-moving-mornings more often? So I do. Coffee + magazines + fun breakfast + lots of time. It makes me happy. :D

Shelley March 29, 2010 at 3:09 pm

Katie March 29, 2010 at 6:53 pm

I heart grocery shopping to the max, yogurt –and cottage cheese– messes (THAT YOG MESS ABOVE LOOKS DIVINEEE, gah! Sunflower seed butter makes everything better), friends, fam, accomplishments and fresh pina fo sho! My soror house usually has it stalked with breakfast so i lurrrve it in my oats! Makes my days that much better :)
