The Little Things

by Holly on October 18, 2009

in breakfast,dinner,giveaway,lunch

It’s really the little things that make me happy.

Especially during a weekend spent at home, evidenced by a simple lunch of a sandwich and apples with a side of the new issue of both Women’s Health and SELF.

But not just any sandwich…a turkey + hummus + cheese + mustard + toasted Ezekiel bread sandwich.  And not just any apple…an apple sprinkled with Apple Pie Spice (see below).

Shopping. It’s simplicity at its finest.  Hand over the cash, and you shall receive your items.

The clothing items were purchased with moi money – a pair of brown calf-length boots, black and white pencil skirt (with an elastic waistband – PERFECT for Thanksgiving!) and a Helly Hansen winter jacket – at my and this girl’s fave store, TJMaxx. The food items were graciously purchased by Mama & Papa Everythingtarian at the local grocery store.

Hearty, delicious and easy…it was Homemade Vegan Chili for dinner!

Garnished oh-so-simply with crushed saltine crackers, of course.  Then my sister and I watched He’s Just Not That Into You (thought it was cute!) and Earth (loved it!).

This morning, it was some Honey Banana Graham Oatmeal.

1/3 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup skim milk + 1/3 cup water
1 small smooshed naner
pumpkin pie spice + cinnamon
drizzle of cinnamon maple syrup
crushed Annie’s Honey Bunnies
1 hearty spoonful Bee’s Knees PB

How can you not love a rando simple bowl of oatmeal?

After a relaxing weekend at home full of couch potatoing, movie + America’s Next Top Model marathon watching (one of the true little things I j’adore), cooking and sleeping, it was unfortunately time to hit the road back home.

A large apple flanked by bug splatters on the journey home.

When I arrived back at my flat (yes, I hope that if I say it enough I will turn British one day), I unpacked, organized and then hit the lake path for a 4 mile run.  Besides the motherf&#^!*@ wind, it felt good to get the lungs going again.

And return home to this…

A POM Nectarine spritzer with a lovely lime garnish.

Have I mentioned how much I love POM?  Because I do.  I think I may like the POM Kiwi blend better, but I literally have not met a POM juice I did not like.  Again, it’s the little things.

Dinner was inspired by the very first blog I ever readGood Things Catered! Katie is an AMAZING cook with fun recipes and festive parties too (secretly, I obv want to be her).  One of my favorites is her Sweet Potato Black Bean Burritos

They are amazingly delicious and cheap to make – which is muy importante since I def spent a good chunk o’ change shopping this weekend (*cough* look above).

Now I am sipping some Pumpkin Spice Tea and contemplating a bowl of homemade pumpkin yogurt, perhaps topped with some more nut butter.  Simple, no?

Three more things before I let you off the hook from this post…

  • In case you are wondering, my mom and sister weren’t exactly eager to have their pics taken for yesterday’s pancake review, but they were champs for the sake of the blog!  Love them.
  • I dyed my hair this morning!  Check back tomorrow for a pic of the new color…trust, it’s new!
  • You have approximately an hour or two to enter my Xagave giveaway before I announce the winner tomorrow morning.

What was the highlight of your weekend? I think mine was just relaxing/wrestling with my sister – you are never too old to pick a fight with your siblings!

Madeline @ GreensAndJeans October 18, 2009 at 8:12 pm

my highlight is that I am currently stuck in the phoenix airport headed to colorado. so it is the low point and high point. yay colorado, boo delayed flight.

L.O.V.E. those boots!

Matt October 18, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Evan Thomas October 18, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Highlight of the weekend? You mean it’s already over? Gah! How did that happen?! I think the highlight was a clean and simple lunch with the fam today :-) Grocery shopping with parents is always fun. And this color thing has me intrigued. Hot pink with streaks of purple? Let’s hope not.

Katie October 18, 2009 at 8:48 pm

yummy weekend! Will you go shopping FOR me?! I HATE, hate, hate shopping – but I love new clothes (who doesn’t?).

The highlight of my weekend is that it isn’t over for another 7 daysssss. Yes for fall break. Yes for being a teacher. :-)

Susan October 18, 2009 at 8:49 pm

I love your new clothing items! I dyed my hair today too!!! Can’t wait to see what you did…I’m still scrubbing dye spots off my bathroom floor :P

Hmm… my highlight was Chris’ surprise visit home this weekend :) (he works out of town)

April October 18, 2009 at 8:55 pm

That skirt is adorable! And I can’t wait to see your hair.. I wonder what color it is???

Does the 1/3 cup portion of oats hold you over as well as 1/2 cup?

Andrea@WellnessNotes October 18, 2009 at 8:56 pm

I love weekends that include a successful shopping trip… ;) And I can’t wait to see the new hair color… Oh, the suspense! :)

Favorite part of my weekend: Being silly with the toddler and “not having to be” anywhere…

Have a great week!

Emily October 18, 2009 at 9:20 pm

sounds like a great weekend! sometimes I wish my fam wasn’t on the other side of the country…

weekend highlight – spending an entire day being domestic with the hubcap! except for the part when I realized I put my ipod through the washing machine. clearly I am not the domestic diva I fancy myself to be.

Da oats be killin me in this post! And what the apple pie spice? I didn’t even know that existed, and I feel as though it may be better than pumpkin pie spice. Maybe?

Your weekend with the fam looks like so much fun! (And I love your cute boots!) My weekend highlight was yesterday when I went pumpkin-shopping with my sis, mom, and 6 year-old niece. There was actually a camera crew there from one of the local news stations who was doing a bit on local festive activities…so…we got to the on the news! Actually, my mom, sis, and niece did because I was on the other end of the store, oblivious to what was going on (wrapped up in my own little world of pumpkins I guess!). Still, it was pretty cool to see them on the news!

Lizzy October 19, 2009 at 10:17 am

Karena October 29, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Burrito sounds great! ANTM marathon + couch on a weekend afternoon = awesome. Wow, had to think real hard about what we did that weekend! Pretty sure that means it may have involved going out and having an indoor/veg out sunday ;)
