the snack drawer

Raise your hand if you look forward to eating snacks as a crucial way of helping make the work day go just a little faster! Raise ’em…yep…there ya go…just a wee bit higher my friends!

Whew…alright, I’m not the only one!

If you work a standard 9 to 5, “I-have-an-hour-for-lunch-and-no-more” desk job where you sit in a semi-comfortable chair and spend your days answering emails, graciously doing things your boss asks of you and sneaking on Facebook when no one’s looking, then you probably already know how important having a well-stocked snack drawer is.

When 10am rolls around and you don’t want to finish that press release, FRUIT + NUT KIND BAR!

When 1pm rolls around and dessert sounds better than sending that email you’ve procrastinated writing all week, LARABAR (and four candy cane Hershey kisses, because they are so delicious)!

When 4pm rolls around and you’re ready to run out of work like our homegirl Kim Kardashian away from a douchy, soon-to-be ex-husband, WHEAT THINS!

As you can see, snacks play an integral roll in maintaining a full-time, working girl’s sanity.

You may be able to imagine my excitement then when Lollihop contacted me and told me about their monthly subscription service delivering healthy, delicious and organic snacks. Did you say I can receive this monthly? And it’s healthy? And most importantly,I am receiving SNACKS?!?

Sold! I signed up and immediately started singing this song.

Suzanne and the folks over at Lollihop promptly sent me a sample box free to review for this blog and upon receiving said box, I immediately dumped its contents into my handy dandy snack drawer at work. Let me tell you how much of a lifesaver it’s been over the past two weeks:

(1) Last week, blue corn chips made the perfect lunch accompaniment to a bowl of Sweet Potato Corn Chowder.

(2) I thought I had left an extra container of Healthy Quinoa Fried Rice in the fridge for lunch earlier this week. Wrong. No quinoa fried rice meant a lunch of kettle chips, a Larabar and dried cherries. I didn’t hate it.

(3) Today, my coworker brought me a slice of her barley vegetable taco pie (delish!) but I needed just a lil’ extra something to go along with it. Solution? A Fruit + Nut Kind Bar.

While I would completely recommend you give Lollihop a try, I find the $22.75/single month just a bit too steep for my budget (although, I will note they include free shipping). Because if you’re like me, you’d rather put that money towards your happy hour beer fund.

Instead, I encourage you to keep healthy, delicious snacks on hand to munch on. Not only will you never go hungry, but trading in your chips, Hostess cupcakes and Big Gulps for Larabars, fresh fruit, veggies, trail mix, Somersault chips and tea WILL result in more energy and a lower cholesterol level. If I was a doctor, I’d just about guarantee it.

You may even find yourself with enough energy to send out that press release or email.

Although, let’s not push it.

We all know Facebook status updates need to be checked first.

What are some of YOUR favorite snacks for the work day? As always, sharing is caring!

Lollihop is literal magic. I eat larabars, all. freaking. day.

Brenna December 7, 2011 at 9:41 pm

That would be such a fun package to receive ! Today I snacked on vanilla chobani…love the chobs!

Katie December 7, 2011 at 10:34 pm

Aww, I kind of miss my snack drawer at work! But now I have a “snack kitchen” at my disposal 24 hours a day. That’s nice, too.

I like the idea of having healthy snacks on hand because more often than not, I’m starving and race towards the nearest packet of M&Ms (which aren’t even particularly filling, I don’t know why I go for them). Of course, there is always the possibility that I’d eat the whole box in a day which may not be quite so good for me…

caitlin December 8, 2011 at 7:51 am

Okay this is so great- because I do the SAME exact thing (sneaking on facebook when one one is looking) hehe. I cut up my work day by times I can eat. That is ridiculous and Im so glad Im not the only one! Thanks for this post, made me laugh.

Sarah@The Flying ONION December 8, 2011 at 7:59 am

Those are some of my favorite snacks!

Lara bars. Kind bars. That sort of thing.

But lately I’ve been leaning more on yogurt with homemade granola. Or Trader Joe’s cheese sticks with Triscuits. I love my snacks. :D

We got a few Lollihop treats in our FoodBuzz schwag bags – I loved it! Really want to check out popcorn chips. I like popcorn and and I chips. Seems like a fantastic marriage. :)

The two snacks that have been fueling my finals week studying are Baker’s unsweetened chocolate and apples. No prep, small, and cheap! I do need to get some more variety, but you know when you are obsessed with a food? Yeah I have that problem!

Jessica @ Healthy Dairyland December 8, 2011 at 10:32 am

My snack drawer is actually a snack cupboard…and it’s full of Luna and Mojo bars, rice cakes, oatmeal packets, and applesauce cups.

hahaha my snack drawer at work looks a LOT like yours–love it!

and can we get that barley taco pie recipe? that sounds pretty awesome!

Megan (Braise the Roof) December 8, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Yum, those Lollihop boxes always look incredible! I agree, though- the monthly subscription is a bit steep for my budget these days. Maybe someday!

My snack drawer just so happens to be in my purse! I’m always on the go in SF so I make sure i’m always prepared with health little snacks.

Hillary December 8, 2011 at 6:29 pm

My snack drawer at work is a hot, random mess right now. Three kinds of tea, instant Sbux coffee, granola, chocolate, etc. This looks a bit more varied and delicious!

Maren December 8, 2011 at 7:40 pm

haha I have no snacks at work (gasp!!) I usually just bring something after lunch if my lunch is light….otherwise I just eat the snacks when I’m not even hungry. I’ve heard of lollihop and agree it’s too expensive for my budget, but a great idea!

Katie @ Peace Love & Oats December 8, 2011 at 9:59 pm

I’m in the middle of finals, so snacking is my life. haha, Im big on veggies dipped in hummus, greek yogurt with just about anything mixed in, and… don’t make fun, but canned pumpkin mixed with cinnamon, stevia and almond millk. so good…

Meghan@travelwinedine December 9, 2011 at 7:01 am

I work from home now, but when I worked in an office, I had a drawer full of food and about 10 boxes of herbal tea. I loved having almonds, dried fruit, and some sort of good cookie like a lemon ginger tea biscuit for an afternoon pick me up! If people in the office were hungry, they knew where to go.

Adrianne Franco December 9, 2011 at 9:28 am

I remember my snack drawer in the office long time ago…. when my office mates discovered it they literally stole the major portion of it. :(

Lauren @ The Climbing Chef December 9, 2011 at 2:16 pm

Sadly, as a cook… I barely have enough time during the day to go to the bathroom let alone have a snack break. Stupid Holiday parties! But, I do have an emergency stash of gluten free protein powder for the days I don’t even have time to eat solid food…. and there may be a jar of creamy peanut butter and chocolate chips hiding in my employe box… just maybe :) During the Holidays, and especially when you work for a catering company…. the little things will keep you sanity :)

Yolie @ Practising Wellness December 10, 2011 at 5:55 am

This post is awesome, dude – you’re so funny, I love how you write just like you are talking, it’s super enjoyable to read! :-) Lollihop sounds amazing – I’m a cheap too though (you may callme a frugalista) and live in the UK, so unfortunately I can’t sign up! I love snack bars (mojo bars, larabars, clif bars), fresh or dried fruit, a handful of nuts, or rice crackers (like chips really) for snacks during the work day. Little and often works for me, I like to eat…a lot, lol! :-) xyx

Matt @ The Athlete's Plate December 10, 2011 at 6:45 pm

This post is spot on. Snacks save me!

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather December 11, 2011 at 10:29 am

Snacks are life savers! I can’t even imagine a day I could or would want to go without them. Usually mine are fruit, nuts, crackers and maybe some bean spread of some sort.

Parita @ myinnershakti December 11, 2011 at 5:37 pm

I’m an 8-5er and a huge believer in snacking because of it. My snack “drawer” if you will usually consists of Greek yogurt, apples, and Cliff Mojo bars. I don’t think I could make it through the day without these types of snacks!

Chelsea December 12, 2011 at 12:09 pm

Now that I’ve joined the ranks of the 8-5 minions, this post was especially engaging. Though the cleaning lady always brings in calorie-rich desserts for our staff to munch on, I always avoid the temptation by bringing a couple of pieces of fresh fruit to work. Fortunately, my apartment and office are on the same property so if I’m starving our SOL on snacks, I can quickly dart up to my apartment to grab a healthy nosh.

Stacy @ Say It With Sprinkles December 13, 2011 at 10:49 pm

Lollihop sounds aaaaaamazing!
