My Ultimate Pet Peeve

by Holly on August 3, 2010

I have a lot of pet peeves.

Mama Everythingtarian likes to say it’s because I always think I am right. So when people disagree with what I believe, I immediately and subconsciously get pissed off, hence the large amount of “peeves.” Personally, I think she’s being a bit of a drama queen, but apparently I am not one to talk.

One of my BIGGEST pet peeves is when I see a good lookin’ bar like this ProBar

…then proceed to rip it open in utter blogger’s excitement before discovering this…

Seriously?!?! I don’t care if you are free from my parent’s house, organic, vegan, 70% raw and a good source of Omega 3 AND 6. You should never ever be 1/2 the size of the wrapper. Not only is that a total disgrace to our lovely Mother Earth, but it just really pisses me off.

Like, a lot.

And when I say “you,” I promise I mean the bar.

Because pet peeves aren’t deserving of my time and energy (much like rude boys, negativity and meanies), I am moving on. Tonight involved a special delivery sent from the lovely people over at Campbell’s Soup

In an effort to spice things up in the kitchen, Campbells Soup is encouraging peeps to experiment with their soup to find new ways of enjoying a warm bowl of goodness – which is why along with two of their Healthy Request soups, they sent along mashed potatoes and rice.

Soup over ‘taters? I’m in.

I decided there was one person I needed to share the love with: BRETT!

He makes such a darling Vanna White, no?

And he cooks!

Shake it like a garlic powder shaker…

Or polaroid picture.

Whatever you so choose.

I got the easy part.

Hold the pots and look cute.

Done and done.

When your apartment is 87 degrees and atrociously muggy, you can’t expect too much. If you take away the frizzy afro-puffed hair, layer of perma-sweat on my face and general hot weather disheveledness, I am lookin’ pretty cute. Plus, I am in love with my new chambray tunic.

Dinner started with a classy drink in the form of an uber-strong vodka + pineapple orange banana juice made by Brett himself…

…continued on with the beef vegetable stew over mashed potatoes alongside a cheese quesadilla

…and ended with a side of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.

While Ms. Griffin might be a pet peeve to some, I kinda love her over-the-top, shameless obnoxiousness. In fact, when filling out our Amazing Race applications, one of my BFFs, Megan, told me that the celebrity I am most like is Kathy Griffin. At first, I am not going to lie, I was kind of offended.

But deep down, I love her crazy.

Probably because I relate.

And dinner, you ask? Brett + I both gave it 4 out of 5 stars. It was good but definitely not great. Surprisingly, the mashed potatoes were my favorite part (I think the secret was the crushed red pepper flakes Brett added).

And now, here I am sitting at a cute coffee shop, blogging and GChatting (even though I am supposed to be “freelance writing”) because my aforementioned apartment is indeed 87 degrees and retaining every ounce of mugginess from this horrendously gross Wisconsin weather.

Ummm…can you say ultimate pet peeve?

Stay tuned tomorrow for a Reader’s Request post AND a giveaway!

I’m watching D-List finale right now; I think she’s fricking hysterical.
Lately, my pet peeve has been people who enter a room and perform some sort of bodily function, like burping or worse. Loudly. I don’t care that we’re related; you can take your nastiness to the room over.

Amber August 3, 2010 at 8:42 pm

I have that same pet peeve! I hate packaging. It’s such a rip off to only give you 1/2 a bar. I feel that chips are a rip off too! Who really needs a 1/2 a bag of air?!?

Heather (Perspective Is Everything) August 3, 2010 at 8:45 pm

I’m lovin’ your tunic, too!! Tres cute and sassy.
I love how real Kathy Griffin is and how she rips the layers of facade off the Hollywood image!
She shows how it’s all just a machine.
Luv it :)

Autumn @ Good Eats Girl August 3, 2010 at 8:49 pm

I love Kathy. I want to be her assistant….just for a few days. I think it’d be such fun!

Also…try chicken noodle soup over mashed potatoes…it’s tasty!

Run Sarah August 3, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Not a fan of packaging like that either! Absolutely loving the chambray tunic – have been looking for a similar one myself!

katie August 3, 2010 at 8:51 pm

hahah i know i say this all the time. BUT YOU CRACK ME UP
i freaking love your outfit too!!
and the probars.. seriously.. its SUCH a freakin letdown

Matt August 3, 2010 at 8:53 pm

Packaging like that is a total rip off!

Send that meal over here! It looks so good!

Jess August 3, 2010 at 9:02 pm

I hate small bars. UGHHHHH!

Erica D August 3, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Looove the tunic! I need more tunics. Bummer about the bar! Between you and Snackface, I’ve been sufficiently warned about those tricksters…

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is August 3, 2010 at 9:06 pm

I hate ProBars. That is one of the reasons too!

Pure2Raw Twins August 3, 2010 at 9:13 pm

Never had a ProBar and I guess I am not missing out :)

allijag August 3, 2010 at 9:14 pm

Um – for realz?! And let me guess – that is one of the ProBars that has – like – a trillion calories? UGH! (and I’m with you on the pet peeves AND my mom says the same thing – so you aren’t alone!) :)

Angharad August 3, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Nice shoes!! I wear them erryday. Yup.

Also, hi Brett!! (you should say hi for me) – sounds like a super fun night missy. I love midweek hang outs.
Also, the pro car thing? DISGUSTS me. Deceptive, wasteful and wrong. The end.

Katie August 3, 2010 at 10:11 pm

You are 100% cute in that picture with the pots! I love you too much.

Also, the 1/2 size probar would have made me RAGE!! I get SO angry with clif bars for the same thing. I swear they are shrinking.

Amy B @ Second City Randomness August 3, 2010 at 10:28 pm

Most people man-handle produce to see if it’s ripe.

I feel up nutrition bars so that I can avoid the exact thing that you discussed. Because seriously. That’s just not cool.

Madeline - Greens and Jeans August 3, 2010 at 11:23 pm

I too am in love with your chambray tunic

Adam August 3, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Dear Holly,
You are funny. That is all that needs to be said… Okay, maybe not all. You are the kind of funny that has me laughing to myself at my computer in front of work clients (it takes a lot to make me laugh)… The kind of funny that tempts me to bring your blog posts up at dinner even though i am the only one in my family that reads, actually, i did a couple of weeks ago which was, well, it took a lot of explanation to get the joke across! ;) As for my pet peeves: The biggest would be people who use unnecessary words in general conversation! Example: (Deane’s Friend Jackie) – I simply cannot wait to attend tomorrow nights incredible festivities, i will most definitely be present. (Deane) – Jackie, we can’t be friends anymore… :)

Mama Pea August 4, 2010 at 1:40 am

How do you look so sassy and cute when it is 87 degrees in your apt? And about to eat soup, nonetheless. Oh yes, you had Brett’s special cocktail. Well done.

Hope you are having a good week, my love!

Lauren August 4, 2010 at 6:04 am

I HATE when bars are the size of a thumb but claim to be a substantial meal replacement! Seriously, if I can eat you in 2 bites, you are most definitely NOT considered a meal!

Now that stew, that is a meal! ;)

Erica August 4, 2010 at 6:38 am

hahaha…oh blogging…why is it so easy to get lost in reading & writing you? I love the idea of using soup in new/different ways. I love adding rice to mine (couscous is even better). Fabulous pre din din drink. I feel the same way about Kathy…I both love and hate her.

Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) August 4, 2010 at 6:54 am

You are so rocking that outfit, Holly! Love it. :D

And I hate when granola bars are half the size of the wrapper….what a letdown. I hope it was at least tasty. ;)

Abby August 4, 2010 at 7:18 am

I’m with you on the crazy heat and suffocating humidity, as my air conditioned-less house is probably capable of heating up soup with any kitchen appliances.

And my dear, you are SO rocking the outfit. I would like to rock that drink, by the way…before it melts.

Katie August 4, 2010 at 7:20 am

Seriously you look so freaking cute in that pic, and I love your outfit too : )

Oh wonderful pet peeves, we all have those !

THat bar, what a rip off, I would of been mad too!

I feel the same way about some foods I buy, like cereal, why cant some cereals fill the bag ALL THE WAY to the top, especially when your buying Puffins PB cereal and it cost like 5 bux a box!

Have a great day love! xoxo

brandi August 4, 2010 at 7:40 am

I hate that, too! Stupid calorie dense bars.

LOVE the tunic. Super cute.

Maya August 4, 2010 at 8:03 am

On packaging: WORD. That’s what pisses me off about Larabars. Really I’m mad because it looks like I’m getting this nice sized bar, when I’m not, but now that you mention it, the waste of packaging sucks, too.

That is quite a nice tunic!

Mallory August 4, 2010 at 8:51 am

first things first: your outfit is muy muy adorable. i would like to borrow it. and by “borrow it” i of course mean “buy one for myself and/or acquire yours” (after you’ve grown sick of it, of course. so i guess that means in 13 years when it’s totally out of style)

and second: that is also one of my top 10 pet peeves! right up there with blinkers that blink too rapidly (i mean really, no need for them to be so overly excited) and people who overemphasize the “h” in “wh” words. wHere do these people come from? wHy must they so clearly enunciate the letter ‘h’?? oy vey.

ok, time to get coffee & forget about those.

Sami August 4, 2010 at 9:03 am

I HATE THAT TOO!! I find it to be true with almost alllll chips too. FSTG included. Such an unfortunate thing. Glad the taters were good!

Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) August 4, 2010 at 9:56 am

I have so many pet peeves it’s ridonkulous, some call it a short fuse… I call it intolerance for life’s little injustices. My biggest pet peeves are unsolicited visitors (I’m looking at you Jehovah’s Wittnesses knocking on the door at 9AM on a Saturday), drivers who don’t use their turn signals, breaking into a recently purchased loaf of bread only to discover it’s moldy, guys with soul patches, etc.

Red pepper flakes in mashed potatoes? That may be the best addition to mashed taters since chopped chives.

Megan (Braise the Roof) August 4, 2010 at 10:11 am

Yeah, that ProBar thing is whack. I don’t appreciate that at all.

I have a lot of pet peeves, too. I never thought of it from Mama E’s point of view, though. I always just thought I was high-strung. :)

I totally agree with you about Kathy- sometimes she’s too much and I “pretend” to be offended by her antics, but really she just cracks me up.

Carbzilla August 4, 2010 at 10:47 am

You look adorable!

And P to the S, those bars are EXPENSIVE $$$!

I love me some Kathy Griffin! I’ve been watching her for years way back when she had curly hair and was just doing stand up. I spoke to her once because I lived in Santa Monica and her parents did at the time. She could not have been nicer. I think her show is hilarious (although I made my mom watch once, and she was kinda appalled).

Uncle Tommie Timbertoes August 4, 2010 at 12:01 pm

I know yer Mamma E and she is the most wonderful, kind hearted, humble, unassuming, laid back, quiet, undemonstrative, crunch cone loving person I know, never-ever a drama queen. Drag queen yes, drama queen no. Cuz she got it from her mamma, who got it from her momma, who……

Emily (A Nutritionist Eats) August 4, 2010 at 12:39 pm

Well since you got me started on the whole bar thing ;) …it drives me crazy that it is that small, yet has 350 calories. Yes, for some it is a meal replacement but that would never be a meal in my world. :)

Tracey August 4, 2010 at 12:50 pm

I LOVE Kathy Griffin, she is too funny!

Ever since I was a little girl I’ve been eating Chunky Sirloin Burger over rice. It was my dad’s specialty:) I loved it back than and I love it today, YUM!!!

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) August 4, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Soup and mashed potatoes? Interesting combo! When the weather gets a little colder, I’ll have to try that :)

Laura August 4, 2010 at 2:57 pm

I love your tunic!!! I have one similar but it doesn’t sit right on my shoulders…rather annoying!!
Argh that is such a pet peeve of mine too!!!! You are lucky these days if the bar is even HALF the size of the wrapper..sometimes even THAT is the company being generous xx

amanda August 4, 2010 at 3:07 pm

i love your outfit!

cute coffee shops are the best.

Megan @ The Oatmeal Diaries August 4, 2010 at 6:09 pm

You are too cute! Also I swear I have the same mixing bowls that you are holding in your right hand… I think my mom got them as a wedding gift back in the day! Or at least they look very similar. Also I’m so glad you posted that bar review because I’ve always wanted to try those. Not anymore! I always assumed they were huge for some reason!

Jenny August 4, 2010 at 6:17 pm

I have a TON of crazy pet peeve’s, not because I think I am right, but mainly because I’m obsessed with details. But that’s another story for another comment…ha

LOVE LOVE kathy G. She is totally over the top, but she owns it and that’s what counts! I am not an ‘outspoken’ person myself, but I seriously appreciate those who are and those who are not afraid of what anyone else thinks!

Nancy August 4, 2010 at 7:53 pm

I love some Kathy Griffin too. I even got to meet her this week!

Faith August 5, 2010 at 6:46 pm

I love this post and I feel the same way about bars that look twice as big before you unwrap them! So annoying. And I love Kathy too. ;)
