The Usual

My blogging style has changed a lot over the past two years.

It started out as a daily food journal. Breakfasts. Snacks. Lunches. Snacks. Dinners. Desserts. For a long time, I did my Everythingtarian darndest to meticulously photograph and write about the things I ate on a daily basis. After awhile, it got tiring and kind of annoying so I adapted my blog to fit ME. Now, it is more about an amalgamation of foodie-related things with touches of life, travel, fashion, music and whatever else is on my monkey mind.

While the majority of my eats escape the camera lens these days, that’s not to say I am always shoving things like reuben egg rolls and beer and macaroni + cheese pancakes into my mouth.

No siree.

On a typical weekday morning, you can usually find me scarfing down my very favorite breakfast ever. This past week however, I’ve been digging some seriously pimped out bowls of cereal.

1/2 apple, diced
1 small banana, sliced
2 T dried cherries
2 T raw almonds
1/2 T ground flaxseed + 1/2 T chia seeds
1/4 cup Life cereal
1 cup organic skim milk

Cool. Crunchy. Fruit-filled. Fibrous. And washed down with a vat of coffee.

Lunches are a bit different.

Honestly, I hate packing lunches. I never know quite what I am going to crave come the noon hour, which means that half the time, I end up eating a lunch I am in no mood for. C’est la vie, it happens. To quell my ever-changing, often odd cravings, I try to pack a bunch of things I can munch on throughout the day. And why yes, I am the most pregnant non-pregnant lady ever.

Kombucha. Salads. Yogurt + fruit. Fig Newmans (recent obsession). Granola and/or protein bars. Veggies + hummus. Peanut butter + jelly sandwiches. Cheese + crackers. Kashi frozen meals. Veggie burger sandwiches. Dry cereal. Homemade trail mix (raw almonds, dried cherries + dark chocolate chips is a recent fave). My lunch repertoire is honestly quite sad.

This often leads me to eat out for lunch.

At the end of the month, I get my monthly bank summary and without fail, I freak out and vow to limit my eating out. It usually works for a couple days, and then the glory that is Sunprint Cafe lures me right back in for their killer salad bar + Sun Buns.

Nine nights out of ten, dinner is simple.

When I get home from work {or Lord willing} working out, I want dinner in my mouth in less than five minutes. While I would really like to pretend I am Ina Garten or Mario Batali and spend hours preparing a multi-course dinner that’s nutritious and delicious as it is pleasing to the eye, I have not the patient or the motivation.

Like I said, five minutes or less.

This is why dinner often consists of avocado + eggs on toast, egg scrambles, salads, soups, pasta + marinara sauce and leftovers. They’re quick, easy, filling and oh so delicious to eat while watching Season 4 of Friday Night Lights on Netflix.

And that my friends is the Everythingtarian “usual.”

If I were to venture a guess, I would say I eat this way about 70% of the time or so. The food may not always get photographed or written about, but I can assure you I am an Everythingtarian whether people are reading this blog or not.

Holly, usual meals for me are a bunch of veggies, raw, cut up (or torn off, i.e. kale, romaine) and thrown in a big bowl with some homemade dressing that I whisked together…not fancy! I’d like to channel my inner Ina more, but ya know. I’m with you!

I just did a blogging tips post (first time in 2 yrs ive ever done one!) and when I read your opening lines it reminds me of how much ive changed in 2 yrs, too.

Suggestion: PLEASE SEND that 1st pic of yours to Tastespotting and Foodgawker. It WILL get in. It’s exactly what they are looking for and totally beautiful! Give it a fancy name like Chia Seed Sprinkled Fruit Parfait and it’ll get on!

I too love egg sandwiches for dinner. You can never go wrong with a big sweet potato and some black beans either.

I usually can’t spend much time preparing dinners either (because I’m STARVING!!), so I also do a lot of egg sandwiches. Soups, brown rice + chicken, leftovers = staples. I love making a bunch of leftovers on the weekend that I can heat up during the week. Sweet potato and cottage cheese is also pretty easy

Eggs and wine for dinner is a general staple for me. No bread anymore (newly diagnosed gluten allergy)…. and learning to eat my usuals w/o gluten is difficult but not impossible.

You’re lunches look pretty delicious to me, but I know what you mean about not knowing what you want. You pack your lunch, see what someone else has, and want to trade. It’s like being back in middle school all over again :)

I love having an egg-based dinner – always quick! I try to make something two or three nights of the week – and have leftovers or lunch. I also try and invite people over for dinner when I do this – it makes my hard work more enjoyable!

I kid you not… if I was a daily food blogger I would simply be re-posting the same day over and over… ‘Groundhog Day’ anyone?

Especially in Spain I eat the.same.things. day in and day out. It makes traipsing all over the city much more bearable.

I’m the same way with lunches…by the time I take a lunch break, what I packed doesn’t sound good but I end up eating it anyway since I’m so hungry.

Usual lunches for me: baked potato, cheese and crackers, pbj, turkey sandwich, or soup. Rotated throughout the week.

My meals are usually oats for breakfast, this week its been protein smoothies for lunch, and massive salads for dinner!

I’m glad that your blog has changed more to reflect YOU! I like it better, to tell you the truth. You’re too funny and great to hide behind 24-hour food photos. :)

Eggs and avocado represent!!! That’s one of my regular meals, too, just add salsa and it’s a feast.

My usuals in terms of lunch/dinner usually involve eggs, scrambled in butter. It’s the perfect food. Sauteed spinach + scrambled eggs (both in butter) is probably the meal I make for lunch/dinner most often.

For breakfast? I’m all about the overnight oats. Unless there’s a fresh, still-warm bagel lying around. Then, it’s a bagel with…scrambled eggs. Geez, I’m so versatile!

I’m the same when it comes to dinner. When it comes time to make it, there’s a 10-15 minute maximum of when it comes to prep time. And it’s usually one of three things every single time.

Don’t fix it if it isn’t broken…

About 75% of my breakfasts are overnight oats or regular hot oats, always with tons of cinnamon and usually with a nut butter mixed in and/or topped with some kind of dried fruit. Definitely far from fancy. I’d say 85% of my lunches I do pack for work (I don’t like the offerings at my work cafeteria and I’m pinching pennies these days, so eating out for lunch is rare) and more often than not it’s leftovers from dinner the night before. In a pinch, I put some almond butter between two slices of high-fiber bread and toss it in a ziploc bag on the way out the door.

I do put effort in my dinner most nights, but I do have leftovers or soup or a huge egg white omelet (the latter is my back-up dinner and I’ve definitely eaten as many as 5 in a week!).

It’s refreshing to see a food blogger talk about this kind of… normalcy! A+!

I love making pimped out cereal bowls!!! I think more people would fall in love with cereal for breakfast if they ate it like that. :)

I love to pack lunches when I have time… which is rare. Usually it turns into a stress-filled race to get out the door. :(

My favorite go-to is a green protein smoothie filled with odd things like sweet potatoes, avocados, or butternut squash.

Try Barbara’s shredded spoonfuls multigrain. Just like Life but with less sugar. I’m obsessed with it right now. For a long time I was eating turkey sandwiches + apple + yogurt at lunch. Now its much more random but still usually involves yogurt.

I’m a big fan of smashed avocado and egg on toast, too!
Other current “usuals” are more like components of meals that I mix and match to my liking- hummus, Sunshine veggie burgers, Ezekiel products and organic feta are among my favorites.

my boring meal is chicken with jarred tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese on top. with veggies and some sort of carbohydrate. easy peasy delicious.

It’s interesting to see a blog develop as the blogger goes through life. When it changes to adapt to the blogger’s life, then I think the readers get a much better sense of who the blogger is. And that’s much more interesting to read :-)

A usual meal for me these days is greek yogurt, Kashi GoLean, and fresh blueberries. I’m so glad it’s berry season again. I can’t get enough!

My blog has definitely changed over time too! I was never a full journal gal, but I did post my nightly dinners pretty much daily. Now, I post pretty much every other day and I post the meals I want to share or life stuff! Your daily breakfast looks awesome. I’ll be over tomorrow. And really, is there anything better than breakfast for dinner? My go to eats? In the summer- I love protein smoothies and fruit for breakfast. Lunch can really vary- sometimes I want a massive salad, sometimes breakfast for lunch (usually eggs/toast or egg roll ups), sometimes huge yogurt messes, etc. Dinner is totally variable- this is when I really like to try out new recipes.

love this :) this is exactly how I feel! I do cook and bake a lot, but my daily meals are usually repeats.

Lately, it’s some type of smoothie for breakfast. Grain salad or leftovers for lunch. Something super easy for dinner so I don’t have to heat up the oven :)

Oh my god… everything looks so amazing, and your comment about being the most pregnant non-pregnant person made me spit out my smoothie (that I prepared begrudgingly last night so I didn’t have to make it this morning). Haha – I’m totally the same way when I have meals at home by myself – “me-time” dinners usually consist of steamed veggies (broccoli, carrots, zucchini), edamame, garbanzo beans, with a veggie burger patty, hummus, and a big handful of whole grain crackets. And a fro yo for dessert. So simple, but I love it.
Toast + avocado + egg looks amazing!! I want that now!!

I like that your blog has evolved this way. And yes, it is DARN-tootin hard to take a picture of everything you eat. Gee whiz.
My go-tos: Salads with random stuff, LEAN POCKETS, cheese and crackers or Quiznos. The BF and I will also make pizza from scratch alot. And by “we” I mean “he”. Haha.

First of all, I love how your blog has evolved- it’s so true to you now! My usual: flaxseed PB on Ezekial bread at LEAST 5/7 days for breakfast and dinner is usually something roasted (either veggies, chickpeas, black bean burgers or something along those lines) or stir fried pasta/rice. I hear ya with the lunch conundrum- I’ve been eating salad bar salads a LOT lately. Sandwiches just never sound that good at lunch!

I LOVE throwing a bunch of roasted veggies in the oven and then having that + grilled chicken. Simple but so good!!

I think I have a new usual dinner now…but I often go with a grilled egg and cheese sandwich or stir fry (and by stir fry, I mean Trader Joe’s stir fried vegetables + tofu + sesame oil = lazy and good).

I way prefer the style of your blog now: beautiful photos, funny anecdotes, insightful comments, etc. Much more varied and interesting than another sandwich or bowl of cereal. Evolution is a good thing—it means you’re experiencing life and changing along the way. Who wants to remain static forever? Keep it up!
