things you may not know

I ran 9 miles this weekend.

It was my longest run in nearly 10 months.

And it certainly felt that way too.

I often eat popcorn with a spoon.

But not just any spoon.

A blue ceramic spoon I bought for about $0.10 in Thailand.

I spent just over $30 on groceries today at the co-op.

That doesn’t count the $4.89 apple carrot lemon cucumber juice I drank before taking this photo.

My friend Ilsa told me the juice tasted like a “blended garden.”

I thought it tasted magical.

3 oranges, green onion, fennel, spinach, eggs, red lentils, kombucha, tomato paste, parmesan cheese, coconut milk, baby carrots, 1 avocado, 3 apples + 1 sweet potato

I kinda feel like a hipster in my new red reading glasses.

All I need is a plaid shirt and a lop-sided, mullet-inspired haircut, and I could work here.

Savory oats have officially come back into my life.

As has teenage acne.

I welcome the former.

1/2 cup rolled oats + 1 cup water
hefty dash of garlic powder
pinch of salt
1 huge handful spinach
3 T nutritional yeast
1 sunny side-up egg
sprinkle of garlic gomasio

Today, I made my first raw dessert.

It turned out okay.

I think I made too many substitutions from this recipe for Raw Cookie Dough Tahini Bar.

I also think my real problem is that the smell and taste of coconut – especially in oil form – has started to make me uncontrollably gag. This unwelcome phenomenon started about 3 weeks ago.

So, I threw the rest of the raw dessert out.

I do a lot of really nice things for the safety of my nose and stomach.

And no, I’m not pregnant.

Tell me one thing I may not know about YOU! Sharing is caring after all…

I like the feeling of cutting into a mushroom and I wish I was brave enough to get my arm tattooed like I have wanted to for years :)

Jess March 6, 2011 at 4:40 pm

WHY haven’t I tried savory oats yet?! Yours look loverrrlyy!

Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks March 6, 2011 at 4:56 pm

My question is what are you going to do with the fennel? I got it in my CSA box this week…and I have no idea what I should do with it!!

Matt @ The Athlete's Plate March 6, 2011 at 5:06 pm

I still haven’t tried savory oats! Must get on that!

Erica March 6, 2011 at 5:23 pm

I want a coop! I get jealous every time you talk about yours :) Savory oats are amazing- I miss runny eggs. One thing you don’t know about me (yet)- I’m having a baby girl!

Adam March 6, 2011 at 5:44 pm

I seriously am in love with your new glasses. I want to get a pair for my sister so she can be as cool as you, but I don’t love her that much ;) How could you hate coconut? (shocked face)… It’s okay, the same thing happened to me last year with parsnips, blech! Something you don’t know about me? I have a 39 year old sister I have never met, and may have nieces and nephews that I have also never met. And my dad doesn’t know that I know about her… :)

sarah (sarah learns) March 6, 2011 at 5:58 pm

i love savory oats too! i mix in salsa, sometimes a little shredded cheese, and plop an egg on top! :)

i can’t lie, the first thing i thought when i read about the coconut aversion was, “oh no, is she pregnant?”….

Katie March 6, 2011 at 5:59 pm

So proud of you on the 9 miles girl!!

I think its SO cute you eat popcorn with a spoon! love !

Love your new glasses , super cute and classy!!!!!

Hope your sunday is wonderful! xoxo <3

I am a ICE CREAM monster ; ) Dont know if you knew that ; )

Courtney (Pancakes and Postcards) March 6, 2011 at 6:16 pm

Congrats on your run! That is seriously awesome.

Um, I’m scared of voicemails. I had been overseas for years with no voicemail, and now it freaks me out for some reason and I don’t listen to them. This has gotten me into trouble.

Lauren March 6, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Yay for a successful 9 mile!!!! You’ll be amazing in the race. :)

Hmmm, something you may not know….I NEVER eat the tips of bananas. They freak me out.

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey March 6, 2011 at 6:50 pm

I love how you always say sharing is caring.

You may not know that I am so sick of the TV shows Cops and boy movies such as Indiana Jones. Bring on House Hunters!!

Mary @ Bites and Bliss March 6, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Love the savory oats!! I always forget how amazing those are. :)

Gillian March 6, 2011 at 7:30 pm

I love the hipster glasses- you’ll need an arm sleeve to get there all the way too.

Those oats look frickin awesome. Egg yolks are the chocolate sauce of savory hey?

Weird about the coconut oil- maybe you’re allergic? I broke out in hives after drinking aloe vera juice the other day, it was almost as fun as teenage acne! ;)

kathleen March 6, 2011 at 7:42 pm

Oh man. I thought I was the only one who hated coconut oil in raw desserts. Blech. I can’t stand the smell. Substitue coconut butter… I promise it’s so much better.

And I like my savory oats with soy sauce, spinach and chives. But yours look good too =)

Andrea@WellnessNotes March 6, 2011 at 8:12 pm

Awesome that you got a long run in!

I have glasses the exact same color. Hubby says they make me look “intellectual.” I love them! :)

One thing you may not know about me: I used to seriously dislike (actually hate) chocolate until a few years ago. And then I fell in love with it. Right now we are trying to figure out a healthy relationship… :)

Have a great week, Holly!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) March 6, 2011 at 8:16 pm

coconut oil…MUST be used in moderation sometimes for me, too. Not always but sometimes i feel like it’s just too thick and like i am eating waxy hawaiian tropic tanning lotion :)

i eat popcorn w/ a spoon too! That way all the melted butter, nooch, cinnamon, and stevia that I put on it and falls off can be easily picked up with every.bite.

Raw desserts…the best kind! I love all raw doughs, balls, bites!

Rachel @ Grateful Girl Goes Gluten Free March 6, 2011 at 9:14 pm

I still can’t get into the whole savory oats thing. Awesome 9 miler! One thing you don’t know about me….I hate coconut oil. I never understood the trend

Mimi (Gingersnaps) March 6, 2011 at 9:27 pm

Agree with the coconut oil–sometimes it’s like suntan lotion.

Your glasses are super cute!

I also like savory oats. I’ve done them up like a pizza before (pasta sauce/parm/bacon bits). Came out yummy!

Jessica March 6, 2011 at 10:55 pm

I looooove savory oats! Oh and I have a sweet plaid shirt you can borrow if you want to complete your hipster look.

sofia March 6, 2011 at 10:57 pm

those glasses make you totally ready for a trip (or permanent move) to hipsterland AKA williamsburg, brooklyn. when shall i expect you?

Mama Pea March 6, 2011 at 11:15 pm

You are an animal. And those red frames and a flannel would go awesome in Portland. You don’t have a tribal tattoo do you? :)

Fleur March 7, 2011 at 1:20 am

I really really like shoving my hands into big bags of lentils and grains like Amelie does in the movie. Feels amazingly nice!

Lindsay @ Pinch of Yum March 7, 2011 at 7:00 am

Love the glasses! And I’m surprised that the raw dessert didn’t work out… it looks really good!

Madeline - Greens and Jeans March 7, 2011 at 7:30 am

I have a closet full of pseudo hipster clothes that you can borrow any time you want. You may not know that I only need to wear glasses for reading, but I love my glasses collections, so I wear them more often than I actually need to.

Kacy March 7, 2011 at 7:32 am

I ran 9 miles this weekend too. It was tough.
Love the glasses!

my little celebration March 7, 2011 at 8:37 am

You are so hilarious.

One thing you may not know about me is that when I was little I used to think I was going to be a boy when I grew up. At one point I even asked my dad when I was going to get my…..you know.

AWKWARD.

Susan March 7, 2011 at 9:15 am

Holly my dear, I thought you’d already learned your lesson about raw desserts!

Ashey @ 365 things March 7, 2011 at 9:52 am

Cute glasses and cute little saucer doohickey for your raw dessert.

Popcorn with a spoon? hmmm I only eat one kernal at a time…so guess I’m a little strange with it too.

One thing you don’t know about me…well I’m sure everything since you dont’ really know me :D…but anyway, one thing about me you don’t know is that I like to suck on peanut m&m’s as slow as I can until I get to the peanut, but only after I’ve arranged the m&m’s by color then size.

Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete March 7, 2011 at 11:22 am

I started getting acne a few years ago, and it was really annoying because I didn’t have it at all before even when I was in h.s. We are getting older, and our hormones change. Have you thought about changing your birth control? I changed mine a month ago, and my face has just about cleared up!

Katie March 7, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Good work on that run!! 9 miles might as well be 13.1 – you’ll kill that half marathon.

Something you may not know about me…I wear my hair up in a pony tail almost every day. I start with it down and blow-dried, but an hour into my day, I get sick of it and pull it back.

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather March 7, 2011 at 1:46 pm

I like to mash a banana with a blob of PB and some chocolate chips sprinkled ontop. It’s one of my favorite snacks that’s nice dessert at the same time.

Sami March 7, 2011 at 2:42 pm

love your red framed glasses! annnnd your savory oats.

i’m definitely a sweets girl, but a runny yolk ontop of my oats is sounding pretty phenom right now!

you may not know this about me, but I have a HUGE fear of needles.

xo.

Emily March 7, 2011 at 5:40 pm

I think eating popcorn with a spoon is a genius idea. I prefer to eat most things with a spoon, actually. BTW, I will happily take care of any partially eaten coconut butters you happen to be gagging about. Things you may not know: I love your blog. I have two tattoos. I am boring. But you probably knew that last one ;) xoxo

Diana @ frontyardfoodie March 7, 2011 at 6:40 pm

Mmmm! I gotta be honest, that raw dessert looks super duper tasty. I know what you mean about the coconut oil. I used it to cook a stir fry once and it took me forever to recover. Like two months, before I could use it. I really only put it on my body but I like using it in dessert recipes.

You may not know that I went 100% raw for four months. Best four months of my life. I’m not joking. I wish I had the motivation to do it again. Maybe this summer when my garden gives me yumminess in the form of fresh veggies.

Eloise March 7, 2011 at 10:47 pm

You, my dear, are hysterical. Way to go on your detox… I would never be able to give up my wine and beer either!
Cute glasses, too!
x,
Eloise

Kate (What Kate is Cooking) March 7, 2011 at 11:15 pm

I love your glasses! I have always wanted red frames :)

Teri [a foodie stays fit] March 8, 2011 at 11:09 am

hahaha! you eat popcorn with a spoon?? what the?! I love you. And still love your glasses a ridiculous amount.

something you don’t know about me – I am VERY picky about eating with small spoons. Not like tiny spoons, but the smaller of the two in a cutlery set. I HATE eating with big spoons – it’s so uncomfortable in the mouth!

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) March 8, 2011 at 11:31 am

Nice job on the run!

Hmm, something you don’t know about me….I hate, hate, hate sushi. Yes, I know. It’s strange. It’s a textural thing. Too squishy!

janetha @ meals and moves March 8, 2011 at 4:37 pm

OMG THAT ITTY BITTY TEAPOT PLATE?! AHHHHHHH i love it.
