this month i…*

by Holly on June 26, 2011

in blog stuff,friends,life,rambling,silliness

(1) Spent way less time writing this blog and way more time celebrating happy things with the people in my life.

Weddings. Birthdays. Engagements. You name it, I celebrated it in June.

With a New Glarus Spotted Cow Beer in hand, naturally.

(2) Gained seven pounds.

And just to make sure we are all on the same proverbial page, it’s most definitely not seven pounds of lean, fat-burning muscle. I blame the mandatory cake I simply had to eat while in attendance at all the aforementioned celebrations.

(3) Ate a lot of eggs + asparagus. Like, a lot. I’m guesstimating at least 2x per week.

In fact, I even wrote a guest post about it. In a surprising twist of events, it’s a recipe concoction I whipped up especially for the single girl. You can safely assume from this guest post that yes, I am still single. Apparently, runny eggs + smelly pee are not the way to a guy’s heart?

I don’t get it.

(4) Was totally embarrassed when I realized Mama Everythingtarian posted this vintage family gem on her Facebook wall. Yes, she is a “cool mom” and is on Facebook. So is my Grandpa. I don’t know what that says about my family.

Regardless, now I am posting this picture on the World Wide Web.

So apparently I can’t be that embarrassed.

*funny story: my older sister Katie was really mean to me growing up (understatement of the year). She was supposed to be the one wearing the glasses + holding the book in this picture, but she thought it was “so dorky” so she gave it to me, because “Holly has no friends and likes to read.” Rue.

(5) Devoured two absolutely delectable dishes at Cafe Latté, the cutest lil’ eatery on Grand Avenue in St. Paul. One was a Chicken Caesar Pasta while the other was a delightful Mexican-inspired array of tortilla chips, black bean dip, guacamole, pico de gallo + sour cream.

I have plans to recreate both.

Stay tuned.

(6) Analyzed, self-analyzed, thought, thought over, daydreamed and started writing down ideas + possibilities for what I want to do with this blog but more so, my immediate as well as future life plans. Have you seriously not learned yet that I am a total drama queen?

Anyways, despite my penchant for the dramatic, I decided a couple things:

  • First, I am going back to my tried + true Everythingtarian habits to drop those 7 pounds of fun chub: lots of veggies + fruit, yoga, running, barre3 (love!) and minimal alcohol + sugar.
  • Second, my blog is going to be this: I post when I want. I post what I want. I post how I want. The only difference is going to be that I am going to focus on continuing to improve my photography as well as my cooking + recipe writing skills. Take that for what you will.
  • Third, if all goes according to plan, I am going to start a really exciting program in January. Once it’s finalized, I will obvs let you know about it.
  • Fourth, how is it July on Friday?!?

(7) Oh yeah, and I booked a flight to here and here. Eeep! My cup of excitement runneth over.

Finish this sentence: This month, I… _______________.

Sounds like your summery is off to an awesome start! Man…I miss runny eggs. That Chicken Caesar Pasta looks freaking ridiculous good. This month I ….hopefully got really ready to have a baby haha

Sana June 26, 2011 at 6:43 pm

This month I ate my weight in mac and cheese :)

Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing June 26, 2011 at 6:43 pm

This month I sucked as a blogger, but loved every moment I stole away from the laptop. Friends. Camping. Hobo experiences. Hikes. Husbands. Kidding — just one husband. (…For now.) Kayaking. Reading a real book. Laughter. Wine. Sleep.

Umm….so, about this whole traveling thing. Yes, I would like to go. I knew you were too shy to ask, but. I’d love to. <3

Meister @ The Nervous Cook June 26, 2011 at 6:58 pm

It sounds like you’re having an awesome summer: Don’t sweat the blog stuff, and definitely don’t sweat the 7 pounds! You’re doing great, living large, and hopefully loving every minute of it — keep that up!

This month I: read 5 books, hosted the first potluck picnic of the season, started picking up my first-ever CSA share, took a pottery class, went on tons of walks with my dog, and set a new PR in a 5-mile race this past Saturday! It was a pretty world-class June, I have to say.

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga June 26, 2011 at 6:58 pm

I USED TO HANG OUT AT CAFE LATTE ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!

Went to Univ of S.T. on Grand and hung out there….all.the.time. A decade+ ago. wow, memories.

Thank you for that. I needed to remember those days :)

The eggs and asparagus tips and cake are making me hungry!

grace b June 26, 2011 at 6:58 pm

…went on a fabulous first day (hopefully a second one will actually come about), vacationed with my family, got a job and then lost it, lost my uncle to cancer, and oh yea, totally ate my weight in cupcakes and ice cream.

So I definitely hear ya on the being more careful of what you eat bandwagon.

Uh, just after I go eat some more kettlecorn.

Jenny June 26, 2011 at 6:59 pm

This month I….didn’t do nearly as many fun things as Holly Bear. Girl, teach me how to live life! I’m in awe of you..really!

Jessica Entingh June 26, 2011 at 7:01 pm

So good to see you yesterday!! Love the pics above :) See you in August – really looking forward to your NoLa food/drink posts ;)

Hillary June 26, 2011 at 7:08 pm

1. My brother and I have that exact same picture. I remember the photographer telling us not to smile, but my brother smirked anyways. At four years old, I remember feeling superior for being the more stoic looking one.

2. If I could photograph food (or anything) half as good as you, I’d be thrilled. Teach me, please.

3. This month I turned 26, completed my fourth year of teaching, started my third semester of my master’s program, and also did some serious contemplating re: my immediate/future life plans. Quarter life crisis, anyone?

4. I also baked more in the last four weeks than I probably have in the last six months. I’ve gone through more butter and sugar than I’d like to admit, and I’ve loved every second of it.

dana @ my little celebration June 26, 2011 at 7:19 pm

Wonderful post, as always. Seriously.

This month I: got a new camera, experimented in the kitchen, took up tennis, daydreamed about getting a kitten, and finally signed up on Twitter.

GOSH, I’m adventurous.

Marci June 26, 2011 at 7:20 pm

I love that story about your sister. I would have said that about my little sister. Sounds like a great June to me!
This month I…found the place I want to retire and went sledding in June! (both Aspen, CO).

Lauren June 26, 2011 at 7:22 pm

What??? You are going to London and Paris?!?!?! That is incredible girl. And please don’t worry about any little measly 7 pounds. I actually thought you were looking amazing these days so it must be working for you. Go with it. :)

Alex @ IEatAsphalt June 26, 2011 at 7:22 pm

This month I: rocked a black and blue eye for 2 weeks, learned to live day by day, not to sweat the small stuff and to enjoy the every day moments with the people I love.

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey June 26, 2011 at 7:24 pm

This month I settled into a teacher’s summer :)

And I’m glad you’re one of “those” people whose pee smells from asparagus – me too.

Low June 26, 2011 at 7:27 pm

… learned so much about myself and my strength.
… met lots of amazing new people.
… missed my family like crazy
… didn’t sleep enough

I heart you. So excited for you for your European excursion!

Karlee June 26, 2011 at 7:27 pm

this month i graduated from grad school, went to Lake Gaston in NC, Asheville NC, and Charleston SC, and started my new job as a speech-language pathologist!

Katie June 26, 2011 at 7:34 pm

…missed your frequent posts but totally understand. Celebrating life > blogging.

…wore a bikin despite my post-baby-gooey stomach.

Evan Thomas June 26, 2011 at 7:49 pm

Would it be wrong to make that vintage photo my desktop background? Because I will.

Pure2raw twins June 26, 2011 at 8:12 pm

this month I finally got my life a little more organized and finding ways to reduce stress.

amanda June 26, 2011 at 8:29 pm

wooo to june and the start of summer! {even though i not-so-secretly crave fall already}

this month i…became very jealous of YOU for booking a flight to london and paris.

Sissy #1 June 26, 2011 at 8:36 pm

I def want the recipe for that salad! And FYI EVERYONE- I never said “You don’t have friends and you like to read”, I said “Your friends are books.” Total difference. :)
PS- 7 lbs of fun chub is totally worth it in your 20s. Just sayin as I approach a wise 30 years of age.

BroccoliHut June 26, 2011 at 9:17 pm

Ha! My grandparents, aunts, and uncles are all on FB. Gotta watch myself!

lora June 26, 2011 at 10:05 pm

Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table June 26, 2011 at 10:56 pm

I am in the same boat with the eggs and the asparagus. And I’m perpetually single. One day I’ll find my smelly-pee mate.

When are you going to Europe?! Pop on over to Italy in October and go wine tasting with me! Tuscany wouldn’t know WTF hit them. ;)

sofia June 26, 2011 at 11:15 pm

so glad you were living life this month, but also that you’re back-ish. love the drinking shot of the three of you, and the vintage family portrait. classic holly, indeed. and why isn’t nyc on your travel list? :( boo!

this month i… spent a lot of time wallowing in unemployment pity. as of tomorrow, that attitude is over. done and done!

Jessica June 26, 2011 at 11:16 pm

I am totes going to copycat you and write a post like this. I loooove it.

Seriously, I’ve gained weight from weddings too! I blame the wedding cake and beer. It was well worth it though. If you are going to gain “fun chub” it should be from dessert and beer. Fact.

Brenna [fabuleuxdestin] June 27, 2011 at 1:29 am

You’re coming to PARIS!? When!

Kristen - Anywhere There's An Airport June 27, 2011 at 3:16 am

This month I hosted visitors, went to Venice, and got engaged. I’d say we both had pretty good months :) Love yours!

So London is booked! :) When should I look into flights!?

Madeline - Greens and Jeans June 27, 2011 at 6:30 am

All the more reason to buy a fascinator my dear! This month I worked a lot, got more sunburns, spent lots of time with my boo, and very little time with my blog. Next month I GET TO SPEND LOTS OF TIME WITH YOU!

Jess June 27, 2011 at 8:56 am

This month I…let myself unwind and relax, guilt-free!!

Sarah June 27, 2011 at 9:21 am

This month I…
-am finishing my last month of work.
-am finishing a grad class I dragged my feet on.
-felt my baby move.
-learned to accept (and be absolutely fine with) people’s (sometimes) ridiculous comments about my changing body, the (climbing) number on the scale, and what I can do physically.
-tried nutritional yeast and kale chips for the first time- and fell in love.

brandi June 27, 2011 at 9:34 am

This month, I have had some amazing opportunities come up and I did not let my fear keep me from saying yes.

Kate @ NaturaStride June 27, 2011 at 9:53 am

Haha nice. We all have months like these and its glad to hear you recognize the positives! Life is about enjoyment and celebrating.
This month I hope to lose 3 lbs in prep for my vacation in 3 weeks. I think it’s doable? Lots of running, veggies, and cutting back on the booze :) Except on the 4th!!

Cait's Plate June 27, 2011 at 9:56 am

I adored this post (most especially that picture of you dressed up and the subsequent link to Bon Qui Qui – my friends and I often use “rue!”).

I love your goals for this month (though I wouldn’t say last month was all that bad!). This month I hope to get back to doing yoga a little more and into more of a routine with exercise since my back injury. I think I should also see more friends…and drink more water :)

Shannon June 27, 2011 at 10:16 am

This month I went to Disneyland and ate entirely too much, I started my 2 week sugar/refined carbohydrate detox, and was entirely too lazy! Oh, and I got sick twice! Yay for me! :)

Carbzilla June 27, 2011 at 10:46 am

This month I gained 4.6 lbs and have lost 4 of it. I wish I could say it was from eating fabulous food around the world, but alas. Amazingly enough, when we sneak off to Portland to eat the good stuff, I end up losing weight. Just have to run away from home more often.

Big hugs!

Claire June 27, 2011 at 11:20 am

Got a new job! Quit my bad job, started taking yoga, listened to my body and stopped running for good and swimming every day, put highlights in my hair for the first time, made crab cakes and cherry cobbler for the first (and not the last) time, finished 3 books, and sent not one, but two birthday cards without addresses on them – just names. I apparently assumed my friends are so important that everyone knows their address. Obviously.

Megan (Braise The Roof) June 27, 2011 at 12:03 pm

I am SO jealous that you’re going to Europe!! Ok, make sure you talk to me before you go to Paris, I’ll point you toward all the cheap foodie must-hit’s. I hear ya about the fun chub- summer is just asking for it. Kinda worth it, though, dont’cha think? You betcha.

(PS, remember when we completely embarrassed Amy whilst walking through Madison speaking in our loudest Minnesota accents? Those were some good times.)

Susan June 27, 2011 at 3:51 pm

London and Paree!? It’s good to hear that you are going to be travelling more Holly. I know how much joy that brings you!

Love that you are just doing you. Je t’aime.

sarah (sarah learns) June 27, 2011 at 5:14 pm

girl, i hear ya on those 7 fun pounds! i think i have at least that too! geeeezzzz.

this month i….attended 2 weddings, 1 bachelorette party, 2 potlucks, and uncounted happy hours.

this month i…had a blast! :)

Jody Krieg June 27, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Oh, my gosh, just told our mutual friend, Brett, that I need to lose 7lbs this summer, so I guess that puts us on the same plan. xoxoxo

Special K June 27, 2011 at 11:18 pm

ANy guy that doesn’t like smelly pee and runny things isn’t worth your time!

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) June 28, 2011 at 9:56 am

confession – asparagus is my favorite vegetable and i sort of like that it makes my pee smell. haha, i’m a weirdo.

i def. gained some fun chub this winter (lots of baked goods, restaurant dinners, and wine) and while i’m trying to clean things up a little now, having fun is definitely worth it :)

so excited for your upcoming Europe trip – yayyyy!

Dorothy June 28, 2011 at 4:10 pm

You HAVE to go to Borough Market in London. Foodie’s Heaven!

Me June 28, 2011 at 6:09 pm

This week !I had
steamed asparagus with a 2 soft boiled eggs..
for breakfast!
Was a coincidence to see you like eggs and asparagus too
(I have heard some people do an eggs benny version even)

janetha @ meals & moves June 29, 2011 at 12:39 pm

You have to take me to Europe. I will fit in your pocket.

Danica June 29, 2011 at 2:36 pm

You are such a doll Holly in every picture you take – ever – seriously! I LOVE that you always remind me to back away from the computer, don’t feel guilty and enjoy life because really that is what it’s all about!

xoxo ~ Have fun in Paris and London even though I will miss you a gazillion times at Foodbuzz!

Katie July 1, 2011 at 9:09 am

I love you! U are so open and honest!

I think I gained 5 lbs on my honeymoon, but i could care less! Life is too short, I live it up!

SO lucky you are going to london and paris!!

Linda July 5, 2011 at 11:22 pm

SO excited for you!!!! I shall live vicariously through you until I can make my way over to that side of the world. I have traveled around Asia, but have not made it to Europe at all.
LOVE your post as always.

This month (JUNE) I…..went to Thailand, gained 3 pounds while there, took over 2,000 pictures, tried not to let the small things bother me (so hard sometimes though…), started eating cleaner (and I love it!), found your blog (and I love it!)…..’twas a great month!
