Vegan If I Want To

There are lots of things I like about being an everythingtarian, but I have to admit: I have a favorite.

Yes, parents aren’t supposed to pick favorite kids, teachers aren’t supposed to pick favorite students, and Heidi Montag isn’t supposed to pick her favorite inflated body part – but hey, it happens anyways. And so I am selfishly and proudly picking MY favorite thing about my eating style.

What is it, you ask?

I can eat whatever the hell I want.

If I so choose, I can down a monster burger + beers on Friday, bag of popcorn + Push-Up Pop for dinner on Saturday and then change it up on Sunday by eating 24 hours of straight-up, delicious vegan eats.  It’s my party blog, and I’ll cry if eat what I want to.

Upon waking at 8am this morning, I wasn’t super hungry so I munched on some Total Cinnamon Crunch mixed with Vanilla Almond Galaxy Granola.

Along with a large cuppa joe, I cleaned my apartment until my tummy was ready to eat.  Then, I brought out the big guns…

I totally blew my grocery budget this week and bought this large container of Nutribiotic Vanilla Brown Rice Protein Powder. The $20 I paid for this definitely stung.  However, when the weather gets nice, I crave smoothies.  And without protein powder, they last me about an hour before I need about five more of them to fill me up.

***Side Note: Ironic that I will spend $20 on protein powder and $120 on running shoes but still have yet to buy a couch for my living room?  Hmmm…

Using my new splurge, I took Kristie’s advice and made a Chocolate Cherry Bomb Shake.  I am not going to lie – at first, I was very hesitant.  Cherry and chocolate? How could that possibly go together?

1 cup almond milk
3/4 cup frozen cherries
1/2 banana
1 tbsp. cocoa powder
2 tbsp. vanilla brown rice protein powder
splash of vanilla

Oh how wrong I was…it was fantastic! I used slightly less cocoa powder than the original recipe called for, and perfection ensued. I probably drank about 1/4 of it straight out of the blender before realizing I needed take a picture quick or it would be all gone.

Almost 30 grams of vegan protein goodness right up in herre.

After spending all morning cleaning, I was ready for some sustenance.  It’s a good thing lunch was a satisfying spread of eats…

carrots + Spicy Black Bean Hummus
1/2 sliced banana + drizzle of sunflower seed butter
vegan peanut butter blondie + smidge of Nuttzo

After letting the digestive system do its thang, I went out for a 4-mile run/walk.  I walked the first two miles, then hoofed it the last two miles at about a 9:30/mile pace back home.

My “Workout Jams” playlist (and yes, that IS what it’s called on my IPod):

  • Bad Romance Lady Gaga
  • Quicksand La Roux (thanks Heather!)
  • Ojos Así Shakira
  • Horchata Vampire Weekend
  • Paris, Tokyo Lupe Fiasco
  • The New Workout Plan Kanye West
  • Friday I’m In Love The Cure
  • The Preacher Brother Ali

That’s about 1/3 of my current playlist for ya.  Let me know if you want the rest.

Guzzled water, stretched, showered and ate cheetahs + BBQ sauce…

Then, I crawled in bed to work on some travel stories + articles before realizing I forgot Greek yogurt at the grocery store. Travesty, I know. So I hightailed it back to the co-op, where I also happened to purchase this juice beauty…

The Apple Jack: apple, beet, lime + ginger.

It’s a good thing I don’t own a juicer, otherwise my produce bills would be OUT OF CONTROL due to the fact I would have to drink this concoction everyday.  Seriously.

And finally for dinner…

That would be 1 cup cinnamon-infused brown rice, tempeh (sauteed in coconut oil + sprinkled with coconut) and 1/4 cup red wine blackberry sauce.

Okay, okay…so the sauce isn’t exactly vegan (butter?  what?), but I am ruling this one close enough to call it a day of vegan eats.  Because it’s my body blog, and I’ll inflate the truth if I want to.

And the winner of the Rachael Ray grill pan? That would be comment #10 from KathyR, who said,

That is my all time favorite protein powder! I always have a big canister of it in my pantry.

That shake sounds soooo delicious! I will definitely have to try that.

Holly, I think it’s great that you can eat whatever you want to! I think it’s such a good thing, emotionally, to be able to do that– many people have a hard time with this. It’s so great to see someone who is working for their health while having fun and living life! :)

I want a juicer so badly! I never considered the toll it would take on my wallet…makes me feel better that I DON’T have one. :-)

I’ve been reading your blog for awhile, as well as many others in the food blog world. i love reading your blog and seeing all your eats, like your burger from the weary traveler a couple days back. i’m a senior at uw so i love seeing all the great madison eats, since i’ve been to a lot of the places…and i’m thinking i need to buy some protein powder too, my smoothies last about a hour till i need more grub.

“Ironic that I will spend $20 on protein powder and $120 on running shoes but still have yet to buy a couch for my living room? Hmmm…”

Story of my LIFE!! I basically wear rags to work everyday because I can’t justify spending $20 on a nice pair of pants, but I have no problem throwing down $30-40 on a ginormous tub of protein powder.

Sorry, but burgers and cheese still trump vegan – I’m a carnivore at heart!! xoxo

You have now reached genius status in my book for your cinnamon brown rice, coconut infused tempeh, and blackberry sauce bowl! fooodgasm.

I love your drinks today! That chocolate/cherry shake looks decadent and amazing! And I think I need to try an Apple Jack also. ;)

I absolutely love your food philosophy. Its one I have developed over time, makes life easier, less guilt-full, and a lot more fun!
