When the going gets tough…

…the tough get going.

Don’t believe me? Just listen to Mr. Billy Ocean in all his 1980s glory tell it like it is:

This video makes me happy.

Anyways…pardon the usage of such a cliche, but it’s true. When we’re faced with things that seem so hard and insurmountable, we really need to take it one thing at a time and just get going with it.

I believe the tough peeps in the world do this with the help of two things: to-do lists and schedules.

And if you are a regular reader of my blog, you will know I am horribly bad at both. I’ve ruminated on both topics several times before. Honestly, I LOVE the idea of both to-do lists + schedules, which is probably why I make them on a daily basis.  When it comes to following through with them however, my right-brained, don’t-tell-me-what-to-do free spirit self rebels and well…they just don’t happen.

For example, yesterday morning, I meant to wake up at 5:30am, get some much-needed things done, arrive at work early and have a very productive Friday (if that even exists?). Instead, I woke up at 7am, cursed the world, tripped over the large pile of laundry in my bedroom and threw together a bunch of ingredients to hopefully make something sort of resembling a large strawberry pancake

1/3 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 T protein powder
1 egg
splash of vanilla extract
splash of milk
splash of canola oil
cinnamon
baking powder
vanilla NuNaturals stevia drops
1/2 cup strawberries + 1/2 mushed banana
peanut butter

Even though I got to work more than an hour late with a frizzy halo of flyaways crowning my egg-shaped head, this breakfast surprisingly turned out quite well.

If I had scheduled myself appropriately, I would have packed a lunch in order to save some desperate $$$. But I didn’t. Instead, I went out to lunch for the 5th time this week…

(clockwise from top left)

  • two vegetable samosas
  • chana masala
  • lots of naan
  • aloo baigain
  • chicken tikka masala
  • salad

Since it was a buffet, I naturally went back for a second plate. There is no to-do list or schedule that needs to remind me to do that. Plate #2 included more naan, aloo baigain + one veg samosa. Don’t know what any of this food I speak of is? Check out my Reader’s Request: Indian Food post!

If I really wanted to get tough on the going, I probably wouldn’t have purchased this overpriced, homemade candy bar after eating my body weight in Indian.

Zang…

Zing…

Zingermans!

Two words: FOOD COMA.

Two more words: CAUSES UNPRODUCTIVITY.

By the time I had shuffled my Indian food child back to the office, my hour-long lunch was more than up and the clock read 1:00pm. I would be much more inclined to schedule myself more efficiently if my hours didn’t feel more like minutes. I digress.  There are never going to be enough hours in the day.

I left work at 4:00pm and headed home with a major to-do list in hand.

First on the list: stop being lazy and make something for dinner.

Okay, okay…so maybe black beans + rice isn’t exactly the most posh dinner, but it did require me to cook up a batch of brown rice. Throw in a can of black beans and some spices – you’ve got yourself a fine PROJECT CLEANOUT dinner.

The key ingredient? This lovely spice I received oh-so-long ago

The rest of the night was spent getting things done that I hadn’t intended to get done on Friday. Confused by my cryptic words? I think this shall help everything make sense…

I told you I like to-do lists + schedules. I do. I really, really, really do. Without them, I would never remember anything or remember to get anything done.

So, in the midst of my A.M. tardiness yesterday, I somehow found the time to make this comprehensive, day-by-day list of things I need to get done. Complete with colored highlighting, a necessity. You see, this weekend is the last free weekend in the next *cringe* month and a half I have to be somewhat productive. Therefore, I NEED to make this weekend count.

No ifs, ands or excuses.

As you can see from the above checklist, I was productive. Just on all the “wrong” days. Screw it. Its Saturday morning, and I have everything done for the day. Thank you Friday!

This meant extra time this morning for an extra large, extra delicious pancake.

1/3 cup whole wheat flour
1 egg
splash of vanilla
splash of milk
splash of canola oil
cinnamon
baking soda
vanilla NuNaturals stevia drops
1/2 mashed banana

Topped with more cinnamon, PB and a NEW jelly find, it was amazing! No offense to the popular protein pancake in blogland, but I firmly believe pancakes taste much better sans the powder.

Per Caroline’s advice, I bought the low sugar jam and it was DELICIOUS! In fact, I think I like it better than my true love, the high fructose corn syrup-laden Smucker’s Red Raspberry preserves (with seeds!).

To return Friday’s favor, I suppose if I want to be tough, I better get going on that 8-mile run.

I wonder is Mr. Ocean would care to change the name of the song to “When the going gets tough, the tough get eating?” It would make my life so much easier.

That song brings me back to my childhood…oh, the memories. There’s also a sushi place around my hood that has themed rolls and one of them is the Billy Ocean (when the going gets tough, the tough eat tuna.) Plus, I may or may not be in a long term relationship with a variety of No-Salt Mrs. Dash’s seasonings.

Love, love, love Indian food!

Alas, my son does not. So, no channa masala for me until he’s weaned (at least another year.)

Eat a plate for me next time!

Your – food – looks – AMAZING! I mean, I’m serious, you just throw it together and I’m not just saying it but you get it so right. The indian food, samosas = deep fried packages of luuurrrve. The Zingmans bar, looks epic. The Rice and black beans. I don’t know why that looks good but it really does. Also, I have kind of a ‘thing’ for your handwriting, it just makes a page more fun and interesting :)

The tough get eating! Love ITTT!

I love writing nice fonts and colors for to do lists. I agree on the protein powder in pancakes thing. If I want more protein, I’ll make protein cookie dough thinned out as a topping, in which I can’t taste the chalkiness so much. Hope the rest of your weekend is productive enough and fun!

Apparently all the cool kids have You Tube 80s Music Videos in their posts today. But mine has PEAbo Bryson. Get it PEA-bo? That is the new name of my favorite appliance. :)

Beautius pancake. The drizzling on top makes me want to grab it off the screen :) I just tried that Mrs. Dash for the first time and I love it! I can’t wait to try all the varieties. Hope the run went well and that you have a fantastic weekend.

A list is not a list without colored highlighting action. That is just the rule…

Erica D May 15, 2010 at 1:55 pm

Hells yeah! You tough, girl.

claire May 15, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Pancakes are definitely better sans added protein in my opinion…you gotta do it. Love the indian posts always….delicious. Hope you tackle that list lady!

highonhealthy May 15, 2010 at 3:58 pm

I love making to-do lists! Except I never accomplish much on them.. I like to pretend that when I’m making them, I’ll definitely do every single thing I write down. Then the day ends, I’ve done nothing, and I pretend that tomorrow I’ll be more productive. :)

I’ve yet to try protein pancakes but I’ve tried the protein breakfast cookie.. and ended up feeding it to my garbage can.

I have a little trick I use concerning to-do lists. Calling it a “to-do” list implies that something must get done and if it doesn’t get done then there can be some kind of failure pall that clings to you. I don’t go for that, cuz I just want to feel unencumbered (like the feeling for a guy of wearing boxers instead of briefs). So I call them “check lists”. Which serves the purpose of reminding me what I have to do without all the preoccupation of whether I get it done or not.

luv yer hair

I love that Smucker’s Low Sugar Strawberry Jam. My roommate just bought a jar and I snuck a few tastes :-) Need to get some of my own ASAP.

My to-do lists are ever growing. Yesterday instead of going to FedEx in the Bronx to pick-up a package, I bought a $4 frappuccino and read a book. Whoops. Sometimes to-do lists need to be ignored :-)

Enjoy your Sunday lady friend!

Katie May 16, 2010 at 10:18 am

Haha, “the tough get eating” – I’m all for that lyrical switch

Also, I think I’m going to make an extra large pancake for breakfast this morning. You have inspired me. Hope you’re having a lovely Saturday, my friend. :-)

Jess May 16, 2010 at 7:50 pm

I love to-do lists! I’ve tried to do them online, but I just love the feeling of crossing stuff off!

Stressful one, eh? As if this is your last free weekend for 6 weeks! Holy hell woman. I had a crazy weekend and all I can think of now is sleep and ignoring to-do lists forever.
Rock on with that jam lady. That stuff is like crack.

Lynn @ The Actors Diet May 16, 2010 at 9:02 pm

oh my god I LOVED THAT SONG AND VIDEO. i was a big “jewel of the nile” watcher, though “romancing the stone” is the tops.

Kacy May 17, 2010 at 9:13 am

That candy bar looks off the hizz. I want it.

When the tough gets going, I defniitely get eating. It’s my own personal cliche.

Hope the weekend was productive and FUN!

ZINGERMANS. i went to michigan, and my best friends and i spent many a sunday, hungover, with sandwiches to the FACE. we always felt better afterward. in fact, zingerman’s catered our graduation party! love them.

i am WITH you on the to do lists – mine don’t look fancy like youre anymore (jealous), but if i didn’t have a list, i might die. a slow, anxious death.
