when work + food collide…

As I’ve mentioned, my Everythingtarian life has been a bit hectic lately.

You see, in my line of work, it is what one might call “busy season” right now. Like really, really busy season. I can’t really tell you more than that, because some things need to stay private. And as much as I would absolutely adore a cute, 20-something resembling Jake Gyllenhaal stalking me 24/7 at my place of employment, my stalker would probably end up looking more like this guy.

That means in addition to speaking in extremely vague terms in this post, I am also getting really good at multitasking. Last Thursday, you could have found me speedwalking to work while eating The Sandwich That Changed My Life, talking to Mama E on the phone and writing a to-do list all the same time.

Portable breakfasts have been key in ensuring I can multitask, eat the most important meal of the day and get the energy I need to last me throughout the day.

1 cup Fage 0% Greek yogurt
1 diced apple
drizzle of agave
cinnamon, nutmeg + ginger
handful Hint of Honey Galaxy Granola
spoonful of almond butter

The key to this Apple Crisp Yog Mess is the stewed apple compote: 1 diced apple, drizzle of agave, cinnamon, nutmeg + ginger microwaved for 1 1/2 minutes.

It’s hot; the yogurt’s cold; I say yes; and nobody says no.

Lunch has tended to be more difficult.

If I was a responsible Everythingtarian, I would cook meals on the weekend, and then store the leftovers in containers to grab n’ go during the week. Unfortunately, with the craziness of work + life right now, that has not been happening. Like, at all.

What makes it even worse is that I am traveling multiple days a week as of late across the great state of Wisconsin, and well, needless to say, sometimes I find myself in places I never knew existed at restaurants like this…

Local mom and pop diners.

Generally, these places aren’t known for having a plethora of healthy options. This place was no exception. However, Anne’s did redeem themselves by featuring over-the-top, gaudy decor to match the upcoming holiday commonly known as Halloween…

I don’t know about you, but I appreciate a side of skeleton alongside my Tabasco.

For several minutes, I deeply debated whether or not to order the Chubbie Delight…

That choice would have been made solely on the fact I may never have another chance in my life to order and devour a meal called “Chubbie Delight.” This thought was merely a passing one, however; I soon came to my senses and ordered this instead…

Turkey Rueben (although I am pretty sure it’s actually spelled “reuben”).

My salad came out, and I had to keep from laughing audibly at a pathetic bowl of greens.

But as Mama E would say, beggars can’t be choosers.

The “Rueben” was decent, and I devoured it with regular ol’ potato chips.

Luckily for me, this meal was the swift kick in the arse I needed to haul my own arse to the grocery store, buy fresh fruits & veggies, make some healthy, filling meals this weekend and pack them in Tupperware containers.

Done and done.

I also took some time this weekend to do something I’ve been looking forward to (and practicing lots of restraint to accomplish) for almost a month. It involved fingernails, fingernail polish and a whole host of Asian ladies who I assume were probably making fun of me behind my back for having such short nails.

Any guesses?

How about three clues?

Week #1

Week #2

Week #3

No matter if it’s busy season or not, I’ve decided my schedule will never EVER be too jam-packed for a manicure and a swipe of OPI nail polish in “Can You Tapas This?”

What is YOUR work schedule like? Sharing is caring!

My work schedule makes me want to both laugh and cry right now. I basically don’t get to breath until Thanksgiving! Heck, we better make that Christmas… First day with the new gig tomorrow!

VeggieGirl October 17, 2010 at 9:12 pm

Hang in there with work!

My “work” schedule consists of 2 hours of school/classes (3 days a week), and 2 hours of dance (4-5 days a week).

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) October 17, 2010 at 9:12 pm

your Apple Crisp Yog Mess = omg you wont believe this but today i made my own apple crisp 1 min “recipe” (if you can call it that) to be posted in a day or two when I have time to upload said photos of it. Mine doesnt involve yogurt though.

Anne’s and mom and pop diners…omg that is SUCH a scene from my childhood. The middle of nowhwere’s ville MN and WI. Places like that. Time stopped. Nothing changed. It’s still like 1982 in there. Possibly ’89. But 20-25 yrs standing still i think.

In CA if you called something a chubbie sammie i think their would be riots til the place was shut down :)

Your nails look amazing! CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matt October 17, 2010 at 9:14 pm

I totally would have ordered the chubbie delight ;)

Your nails look great! I have a hectic schedule of classes and babysitting. Throw public transportation in the mix and it is exhausting!

The nails look great Holly! Oh man, diners greens…ha.
My hours are usually 14-18 hour days when I am on a film but I have had the last few weeks off to detox a lil bit! Of course I am always looking for my next project as a freelancer…

Mama Pea October 17, 2010 at 11:28 pm

Nice nails!!! And I love that you are supporting the little diner. Go you.

Sorry that a phone chat wasn’t in the cards this weekend. I’m busssssy like you!

I feel your pain.

Full time student + 2 jobs + House-sitting every weekend = Lifestyles of the poor and stressed.

My work schedule is so busy right now that I can’t even think about it without tearing up a little. I need a vacation.

I have ordered salads at little mom and pop diners in WI all over the place and the iceburg, cuke, and two slices of tomatoes with ranch dressing that inevitably comes never ceases to make me giggle.

Mimi (Gingersnaps) October 18, 2010 at 2:43 am

I HATE eating while walking, with a passion…but I totally envy people who can do that while doing other things at the same time. I am too poorly coordinated.

Hehe, Texas has SO many diners just like that. Places where “salad” is defined by a slosh or three of ranch dressing (Or eye-talian for the classy folks).

But yeah, I’ve been crazy busy too. I’m balancing school, work, and a new apartment. Whew! But surviving! We must be sisters in badass independent womandom!

Lauren October 18, 2010 at 5:40 am

Ugh, busy seasons are always so stressful but definitely worth it when they are all over. I just went through mine at work and now I’m going through a major one at home. It really does catch up with you but hang in there!

I love the manicure!!!! Now if I start to see fake nails on this girl, I’ll be floored! ;)

Erica October 18, 2010 at 6:36 am

Warm apple…mmm. The mess looks great. And hooray for getting your nails did! They look fabulous. My schedule is usually pretty hectic. I run from teaching to work or work to teaching. I try to pre-prep dinner somewhere in there and usually eat dinner around 7:30 or 8 (unless its a teach in the morning day).

Lindsay @ Pinch of Yum October 18, 2010 at 7:00 am

Glad you still have time for a lunch like that with your schedule being so hectic! That turkey reuben does look rather tasty… I love reubens!!

Nelly@CrazySexyFit October 18, 2010 at 10:26 am

Great job on the nails! I went through the same thing a while back and know how tough it can be, but you’ve gone over a month now – high five! :)

Nic October 18, 2010 at 10:56 am

Sharing IS caring! Work is a constant ebb and flow with me. One minute lax the next it’s nuts. At this point, I guess I’m just happy to have a job!

You’re nails look great!!!

Lindsey @ Eat, Read, Run October 18, 2010 at 11:59 am

I hear ya! My work schedule has been crazy as well. Plus my life schedule for October seems kind of insane too. What is it with this month? I thought Nov/Dec would be bad, now I’m terrified of what’s to come.

Kacy October 18, 2010 at 12:11 pm

It’s been busy at my work too, and we’ve been understaffed at my part-timer so it’s been more work than I care for but I gotta make that paper.

Love the nails! You’ve made a lot of progress lady.

Megan (Braise the Roof) October 18, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Haha, oh OPI with your clever names! Work hasn’t been too busy for the past month or so, but I have about a million other things happening right now so I’m with you on the whole “too busy to function properly” front. And as for weekend cooking for lunchtime consumption, I have three words for you: mac ‘n cheese. It bakes well in a casserole dish, you can add protein and veggies and you’ll never NOT want to bring it for lunch. :)

Jenna October 18, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Work is usually always a little nutty for me! I usually work a solid 50 hours a week. More towards the end of the year. Hang in there!

Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) October 18, 2010 at 1:38 pm

I know you will appreciate this – I had a dream last night involving a 36 year old Jake Gyllenhall look alike. <3 JG

My work sched is normally 9:30am-6pm with some occasional overtime (plus I have a work blackberry). Howeverrrr, we're entering our 2011 budget process so it looks like I'll be staying a bit later than usual. No travel for me though – although sometimes I think that would be a nice change of pace!

Your nails look lovely m'dear :)

Katie October 18, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Busy lady! When things get crazy, you just roll with it and do what you can. If you have to eat out more often than usual, skip a workout or slack on the social outings, it’ll pass. Love you lady!

elise October 18, 2010 at 2:39 pm

dude you have me soooo curious about your job.

as far as your sister is concerned, its rough starting out, but how long as she been in peds? is it the staff thats not supportive? or is it too stressful? does she think another unit may be better?
i think its hard no matter where you start, but if she keeps trying her best, thats all you can do. the learnign curve is different for everyone and theres ALWAYS more to learn. i dont think ive ever stopped. its ok to be inquisitive as long as shes safe in practice. hope that helps :) tell her to keep her head up. sometimes older nurses are not so kind to newbies…

NAILS LOOK GREAT!!!

Rachael October 18, 2010 at 8:49 pm

Work right now is rugrats for 8 hours a day. And fundraising non-profit stuff at night – writing grants plus two glasses of wine is my excitement of choice this fall. I’m praying and sacrificing small rodents to the gods in hopes that an anti-mountain top removal organizing job comes through this week. Mama needs to get her coal butt kicking on.
I’m jealous of people who have pretty nails to paint. I have stubs. Which, of course, I gnaw on voraciously.

Jen October 19, 2010 at 8:00 am

Your nails are looking great dear! Keep up the good work!
