white girl problems

in breakfast,recipes,silliness

If you’ve been reading this blog for any amount of time, you will know I am massively (and borderline stalker-ishly) obsessed with three distinct yet equally delicious things:

(1) Jake Gyllenhaal (remember this creepy pic?)

(2) Anthropologie

(3) PB+B toast for breakfast

These three things instantly bring a smile to my Everythingtarian face. The thought of M.F.H (ahem, my future husband) Jakey. The mere possibility of owning this pair of earrings or these retro culotte shorts. The first lick of melty peanut butter on toasted Ezekiel bread.

Just imagine if I was married to Jake, wearing those amazing shorts and eating PB+B toast all at the same time! Le sigh. I can see our hipster Williamsburg apartment in Brooklyn now.

But alas, I can’t have Jake. I can’t possibly step foot in Anthropologie for fear of maxing out my once paid-off credit card. And I can’t make my old reliable PB+B toast for breakfast because I am plump out of ingredients (and leaving for Minnesota tomorrow for a long wedding weekend). This my friends, is what we call a tried and true white girl problem.

What is a privileged Caucasian female like me ever to do?

Pull up my Ann Taylor skirt and improvise, that’s what.

I’ve realized that while Jake + Anthropologie purchases may be out of the Everythingtarian question, there are still delicious, equally satisfying breakfast options to choose from other than PB+B toast (which I literally ate almost every day in the month of May). Like raw oatmeal + fruit cereal. That’s 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1 T chia seeds, 1/2 sliced banana, 1/3 cup frozen berries, one hefty drizzle of almond butter + a generous pour of organic skim milk.

I’ve had this three times in the past week, and it’s almost made me forget how cute those coral earrings are. Almost.

Two days ago, I tried something I saw on Lauren’s blog: Banana Chia Pudding.

Greek yogurt. Banana. Milk. Stevia. Chia seeds.

Tied up in my ruffled Anthropologie apron (yes, I own two one), I blended this delightful mixture, let it sit overnight and thoroughly enjoyed the bowl topped with almond butter + sliced bananas the next morning. My only problem was that my perfectly manicured hands added too much stevia, which left my high-brow tastebuds with a seriously funky aftertaste.

Don’t laugh – that is a serious problem!

While I enjoyed both of the above breakfast concoctions, I must admit my new favorite might just be a wholesome bowl of fruit + nut cereal.

Mix 1/2 diced apple + 1/2 sliced banana in 1 T chia seeds + 1 T ground flax. Add 1/4 cup of raw almonds + 1/4 cup Life cereal (or cereal of your choice). Douse in organic skim milk.

It’s crunchy. It’s slightly sweet. It’s refreshing. It’s perfect washed down with a cup of coffee. Really, it’s everything you could want in a breakfast cereal – no high fructose corn syrup, red 40 dye or rat poison (also known as TBHQ), included.

Well, it’s everything you could want minus the fact there’s no mini Jake Gyllenhaal figurine or 50% of Anthropologie coupon hiding in the cereal box.

Frilly Anthropologie aprons are seriously the bomb. Love mine so much :)

Twitter hashtags have helped me realize what are actually problems in my life and what I just think are problems but are really me being privileged. Thank you, Twitter, I owe you.

Erica June 7, 2011 at 8:08 pm

heheh. Does sound like some SERIOUS problems ;) I hope you have so much fun at the wedding. The last bowl looks best to me. Josh and I are huge Life cereal fans. Deliciousness

Madeline - Greens and Jeans June 7, 2011 at 8:16 pm

If you find 50% off for Anthro in your cereal box I am flying to Wisco early to steal it from you. #whitegirlobsessions

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga June 7, 2011 at 8:18 pm

I think that Anthro should have an everything free for bloggers sale once a quarter :) It would sure solve lots of my problems! :)

Amanda June 7, 2011 at 8:19 pm

I would faint if a 50% off coupon for Anthropologie showed up in my cereal box. Then I’d buy 50 more boxes of cereal. I am Anthro-obsessed!

Jess June 7, 2011 at 8:33 pm

I loveeee anthropologie! My mom had no idea what that was when I mentioned it today–i was BEYOND flabbergasted!! Delicious looking eats, despite the lack of bread + pb ;)

Amanda (Eating Up) June 7, 2011 at 8:39 pm

Let’s be honest. Would a mini JG really be okay?

Tori (Fresh Fruition) June 7, 2011 at 8:44 pm

That last photo made me crack up. I thought you had cheese cubes in your cereal at first! False alarm :) Inspiration, maybe? I don’t think that’d be good. Or would it? AHH!

I love Anthropologie. Sadly, it’s out of my teenage jobless budget :)

Pure2Raw Twins June 7, 2011 at 8:53 pm

haha you can always bring a smile to my face ;)

Laura @ LauraLikesDesign June 7, 2011 at 9:15 pm

I am loving your photography…especially that last shot. Nice work! What kind of camera do you use?

Amy B @ Second City Randomness June 7, 2011 at 9:30 pm

I will never give up on Vince Vaughn. Ever. And you should not give up on Jake!!! :p

Allison @ Allison's Delicious Life June 7, 2011 at 9:37 pm

haha, you’re so witty. i love it!

my little celebration June 7, 2011 at 10:24 pm

I love you, white girl. And I just had a thought.

If your blog gets big enough (which it will) and you become yet even more well known than you already are (which you will), jake will surely catch word of your borderline obsession with him and you two will be destined to meet. Like maybe on the Tonight Show or Conan when you show up as a surprise guest on Jake’s evening spot.

Methinks if you white girl wish hard enough, this may just come true. Mayyyyybe…

Jessica June 7, 2011 at 10:30 pm

Oh girrrrl. I have some serious white girl problems…like why can’t I find Indian food or falafel in Beloit? And my cute new flat dress shoes give me wicken blisters. Womp.

That fruit and nut cereal is looking delish. If I ever get up on time, I’m making it!

Lauren @ WWoB June 7, 2011 at 11:24 pm

Oh no! Does my recipe call for too much stevia? If you think I should lower it a bit – please let me know! I am super flattered that you made it hun! :)

Lauren @ WWoB June 7, 2011 at 11:25 pm

PS – I fudgin love the title of this post.
A *badass* privileged white girl.

Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table June 7, 2011 at 11:29 pm

I want to eat breakfast for every meal. #stuffwhitepeoplelike

Mama Pea June 7, 2011 at 11:30 pm

I got a 25% off Anthro message in my inbox today, did you? I’m going to go dig it out now…

Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] June 8, 2011 at 1:23 am

That bowl of cereal looks bomb-digity!

Kristen - Anywhere There's An Airport June 8, 2011 at 4:37 am

And now my very Spanish dinner will be the largest bowl of cereal imaginable. And I will online window shop at Anthro to make the night complete. Spain has great shoes… but Anthro they do not!

Brenna [fabuleuxdestin] June 8, 2011 at 6:23 am

haha. I have an obsession with Romain Duris? So embarassing!

Hillary June 8, 2011 at 6:26 am

My BF is getting his PhD. in sociology, and every once in a while when I complain, he’ll (jokingly) refer to my complaints as my “First World Problems.” I like the “White Girl” spin on a very similar idea.

White Girl Problem of the week: my local supermarket was sold out of my favorite Kashi cereal, and I had to drive to Target to get some instead. The horror!

Gillian June 8, 2011 at 7:11 am

This is SO similar to the breakfasts I’ve been making! Giant fruit bowls with berries, apple, pear, nuts, chia, raw cacao goji berries and almond milk. + cinnamon.

My white girl problem right now is I need a new dress for the theatre Saturday night. And my fiance thinks it’s ridiculous that I could “need” a new dress. Some people just don’t understand.

Emily June 8, 2011 at 12:24 pm

If I had a million dollars, I would buy those earrings for you. And me too. They are gorgeous! I would say those breakfast ideas are worth a mil, though! xoxo

hippierunner June 8, 2011 at 12:47 pm

I have been having raw oatmeal+fruit cereal every morning but it has not occurred to me to add nuts! Thanks for the brilliant idea. I’m definitely having that next time.

emily (a nutritionist eats) June 8, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Love the fruit +nut + cereal + chia combo, must try!

If you are in Eagan at all Thurs/Friday and want to grab lunch let me know! :)

Megan (Braise the Roof) June 8, 2011 at 2:23 pm

Girl, I looked at the Anthropologie sale site yesterday and almost wept. So, so pretty. I love this post- thanks for knocking some sense (and sharing pictures of delicious, cold meals- this heat is nuts) into us!

Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans June 8, 2011 at 2:41 pm

Love it!

Katy @ fitinheels June 8, 2011 at 4:48 pm

Damn, I thought I was the only white girl with problems: I need to get my bangs cut.
I love Anthropologie. They opened a few in Canada and it is so amazing. There was a gorgeous poncho-style camel jacket that I was dying over. When I went back to get it, they told me “it went on MAJOR sale a month ago, totally sold out”. I weeped, and spent $200 anyway.
Sucks to be us.

Lauren http://theclimbingchef.blogspot.com/ June 8, 2011 at 5:01 pm

God, you crack me up!! I also believe that Anthropology and I were made for each other but my wallet/bank account/credit card do not feel the same way. I’m on some list of theirs and every year they send me a birthday present… to be honest, that the best part of the yearly event. Last year I got a birthday candle on a string, necklace and a coupon for 15% off my next purchase. Pretty sweet deal :)

You’re breakfasts always look really good! I must remember to check them BEFORE I make my breakfast.

Oh, and I’m pretty sure my apron collection trumps yours… just saying, be proud of your TWO anthro aprons :)

Emily June 11, 2011 at 9:27 am

goodness gracious my love, your photographs get better with every post.

Jessica @ Stylish Stealthy & Healthy June 12, 2011 at 6:57 pm

A girl after my own heart.
I too could shop at Anthro, stare into those gorgeous big blue puppy dog eyes of his and eat pb + ezekiel toast all day, every day.
However, I’m married and my wallet weeps when I walk into an Anthro so I guess it’s just me & the pb toast for now. Sigh.

Shannon June 13, 2011 at 12:23 pm

OMG I am freeking in love with Anthropologie! I changed all of the knobs on my dresser with knobs from there. All different but same colors. I also have a headband from there but as you said, their stuff isn’t exactly cheap! Plus, I have to lose a couple of sizes before having a prayer to fit into their clothes! Did you know Giada De Laurentiis’ husband works for them? Not quite sure what he does though.
That cereal looks really good. I used to do something similar with yogurt but for some reason I can stomach it anymore so I’ll have to try that with milk.

Mackenzie @ Whatever, Gatsby June 15, 2011 at 2:41 pm

buuuuut there is a THREE STORY ANTHROPOLOGIE here in boston for you to come frolic with me :) i mean, not that i’m implying anything…..like the fact that the top floor IS HALF SALE ITEMS?!??!?!

i rest my case. ;)

Amy July 10, 2011 at 8:59 pm

Hey there,

So I just stumbled on your blog and feel like I’ve found a kindred spirit :) Your food and boy taste is exactly me! haha, thanks for sharing and keep it up!
